This chapter provides a detailed look at women's rights in Afghanistan. The basic definition of women's rights has varied in Afghanistan according to region, social stratum, time, and educational levels, and it has rarely if ever been consistent across the country at any given moment. In the past few decades at least, many educated urban women (and some men) have understood the concept of women's rights according to two major referents.
