Abstract:
This essay describes the evolution of the garment known as a blusa, worn by urban women in north-western Algeria. It incorporates locally meaningful traditions as well as fashion styles in conjunction with different cultures. Its transformation illustrates how Algerian women resisted cultural assimilation through dress while creatively appropriating western European textiles, techniques and aesthetics in their clothing, during the French colonial period (1830–1962) and its aftermat

Abstract:
This issue contains a symposium on Jonathan Webber's recent Rethinking Existentialism, bookended by two articles. The first of those two articles is a translation (by the author herself and John Gillespie) of Annie Cohen-Solal's highly significant article in Le Monde, ‘Who's Still Afraid of Sartre?’, which gives us a flavour of her much more extensive keynote, with the same title, at last year's meeting of the UK Sartre Society. It is an exploration, by the woman who not only wrote (among many other things) the first biography of Sartre, but has been able to observe French politics and society

Abstract:
Introduction While individuals from marginalised and vulnerable communities have long been confronted with the task of developing coping strategies, COVID-19 lockdowns intensified the conditions under which resilience and wellbeing were/are negotiated, not only for marginalised communities but for people from all walks of life. In particular, the pandemic has highlighted in simple terms the stark divide between the “haves” and “have nots”, and how pre-existing physical conditions and material resources (or lack thereof), including adequate income, living circumstances, and access to digital an

Abstract:
Samuel Beckett excused himself from his affair with Pamela Mitchell with a syntactically evocative phrase: ‘It is I the hurter of the two’. The definite article is telling: How it is (1964 [1961]) universalises one cruel, asymmetric, pseudo-amorous relationship, deducing from it ‘billions’ of similarly helpless, prostrate, mud-bound ‘creatures’, exchanging roles as torturers and victims in a leniently egalitarian distribution of suffering. Titled ‘Pim’ from 1958 until its publication, Beckett’s last, long, prose-like work happened to coincide with the Algerian War of Independence, during which
