Abstract:

ABSTRACT Little has been written about the work of women in Canadian science and technology, particularly for the period prior to the First World War. In this study, drawing largely on data in Science and Technology in Canadian History: A Bibliography of Primary Sources to 1914, we present a picture of the activity of almost 150 women authors. Representing 1.4% of all known authors of the period, these women wrote on a variety of scientific and technological topics and sometimes with a particular woman's viewpoint. The analysis highlights a number of changes which occurred throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

First World War shell shock in British poetry of soldier-poets and modernist prose of women writers The purpose of the following article is to compare and contrast the literary modes of representation of the First World War shell shock in the poetry of soldier-poets and in the prose of women writers. The war trauma called “shell shock” had a profound impact on British literature and the common memory of the Great World. At the time, the poets who were soldiers expressed their traumatic experiences in their works. Abstract:

Although the most popular Hungarian historical novels were written in the nineteenth century by the famous romantic writer, Mór Jókai, a revival of the genre occurred in the period following the First World War. Most of the authors, each influenced by a different worldview, were scouring the symbolic space of history for an explanation as to why Hungary had lost the war. “Our knowledge of the past, our cultural heritage is also a symbolic space that is the site of struggle for the self-representation of social groups, a space that is shaped according to the degrees to which certain groups have access to it” – states Györgyi Horváth in her work on the constitutive role of the historical narrative; this, of course, is also true of authors in the Post World War I Era. They represented their own social groups, which happened to be white, middle class, Hungarian men. Although the period between the two World Wars saw the rise of female authorship, and dozens of historical novels were published by women each year, almost all women writers conceived their novels from a dominant masculine perspective. In this paper, I examine one of the few exceptions, a tetralogy of historical novels by Lola Kosáryné Réz, written from the perspective of oppressed women, and I discuss her stance on the relationship between different ethnicities in discourses of war and responsibility.

Abstract:

The article presents the problem of the empathy felt by the author or authors of the Iliad and Odyssey towards women depicted as victims of war. Understanding of the world in the Homeric poems may be misinterpreted today. Since Homer’s works are a product of oral culture, in order to determine his intentions, it is necessary to look at them from the perspective of the tradition from which they derive. Furthermore, the author of an oral work can be deemed as creative because s/he shapes his/her story through interaction with the listening audience. The different aspects of the relationship of women as victims of war with their oppressors are, therefore, interpreted according to the use of traditional techniques adopted to evoke specific emotions in the audience.

Abstract:

Immediately before and shortly after the collapse of socialism in 1989, a large number of private publishing houses were founded in Hungary. Some of them began their career by republishing the novels of selected popular Hungarian women writers of the preWorld War II era that had been banned following the Soviet occupation of the country in 1945. The lack of comprehensive literary criticism on the works of women authors drove the new publishers to rely on the so-called “oral canon” of collective memory, which had saved some of their names from oblivion. To grab the attention of prospective readers, the books selected for publication were provided with modern book cover designs, reflecting new, but still patriarchal values. After a brief overview of how prewar literature was censored after 1945, focusing on the editors’ inevitable reinterpretation of the writings of Renée Erdős, Mrs. Kosáry Lola Réz, and Anna Tutsek through book cover designs, Kádár aims in this paper to survey in what ways and how successfully the re-editions of the novels by women writers have contributed to their inclusion in the literary canon since 1989.

Abstract:

The article reviews the concepts of the multi-author book Society. National Strategy. War: Political and Strategic Lessons of the First World War. This collective research is notable for rich original scientific apparatus and methodological proficiency. Thus, the analysis of participating countries is conducted according to a single template, which includes: the state of pre-war society in all participating countries (including the assessment of the level of credibility and efficiency of the ruling elites, crises of political regimes, attempts to save regimes by means of war, accumulated internal socio-economic and political problems); goals of engaging in war and expectations of the powerful and financial elites for the war (or lack of goals); assessment of how did different strata of society find the war; the evolution of the morale of the people during the war; problems that arose during the war (diseases, food, military resources, losses, discontent, etc.); the evolution of women’s position in society during the war, the development of a broad segment of women-workers, the extension of emancipation as one of the positive results of the war; the outcome of the war for the country (losses and gains). Special attention is drawn to the pacifist nature of the ideology of the reviewed research, demonstration of deprivation and suffering of people in all countries. The book’s authors identify the main causes of the First World War: ambitions and inefficiency of the world’s elites, the lack of a coherent strategy. As the result, the USA, thanks to their strategy, received the maximum dividends with minimal participation. At the same time, it is noted that the context of research on the nature of war should be expanded to take into account the general competition of countries and civilizations. The authors comprehensively analyze the informational and propaganda activities of the participating countries and conclude that England’s activities in this field were the most effective. Based on the methodology of this collective research, the nature of a future world war, its potential participants and their goals can be considered.

Abstract:

The article is focuses on the study of the issues of participation of women of Ukraine in military formations in the First World War by modern Ukrainian historiography (1991-2016). Based on the topic, the author tried to solve the following research tasks: to identify which aspects of women's military history are within the interest of historians, to analyze the scale, character and level of research of the topic. The author found that the study of women's military history is gaining momentum. Historians are actively searching women's stories in the sources of those times; they are in the process of gathering information. They call military history “personal” because research on the subject is partially based on reports of the press about women volunteers and mainly on participants' personal documents, memoirs and letters. In the letters, women wrote about the way to the front, military life, a little about participation in battles, relations with soldiers; they also left information about each other. At the same time, each of the women had personal experience of war, own motives and results. Therefore, historians concluded that "this experience is quite difficult to summarize ". Modern researchers approach the study of women's stories not only in terms of heroism but trying to understand the causes and consequences of women's actions. The authors mention such main reasons as boredom of everyday life, escape from duties and national impulse. Inspired by the new fashionable views on life, the girls tried to escape from their everyday duties; they wanted to overcome social barriers and to prove that women were capable to cope with any work. The escape to the front was an attempt to change the way of life. Women who came to the front and participated in hostilities had to adapt quickly to difficult conditions and trials; they had to fight and to protect their own lives. The authors also analyze how society perceived the phenomenon of women in the war. Military commanders heroized their actions with the reason to raise the fighting spirit. However, the views of military men varied: the village guys welcomed and supported the girls; on the contrary, the men from the intelligent circle condemned women regarding them as competitors. Civil women believed that the girls had forgotten their traditional duty, they could have been more helpful in hospitals and doing charity. The author of the article also found that the participation of women in the military unit of the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen was better studied. The researchers concluded that the Ukrainian women who lived in the Russian Empire supported the call in 1917 of the Provisional Government and Maria Bochkareva to form women's combat battalions. Women were motivated to go to the front by the same reasons as women in the ranks of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen: failures in love, the desire to escape from violence and humiliation in the family, domestic problems, the desire to avenge the dead relatives and loved ones. In big cities such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa, Poltava, the Ukrainian women willingly enrolled in the army. Anyway, the inclusion of women in the combat units of the army of the Russian Empire was found out fragmentary, there are almost no names and characteristics of the activity of the women's battalions. Only a few researchers pay attention to the messages in the then newspapers about escapes and the heroic deeds of girls in the war. These issues require the search of information and detailed study. The author came to the conclusion that most of the questions remain scientifically open requiring the search for information about women in the ranks of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen and the army of the Russian Empire for the generalization of information and creation of a coherent picture of the military service of women at the front of the First World War.

Abstract:

The present paper deals with the analysis of the Soviet ideological approaches, related with ethnology development, therefore the research covers two following directions: 1. The research of the importance of ethnological film-making, covering religious and ethnolocultural values of Georgia and its neighboring countries. The first scientific-research expedition to the mountainous Georgia, supported with film-making equipment in Georgia, was implemented in 1960. Different films, featuring historical monuments or episodes or displaying material and spiritual lifestyle, which had already been filmed in Georgia before, were characterized with the total lack of the main features of ethnographical films. For example, the authors had been never applied preliminarily planned and staged scenes. Accordingly, a special attention shall be paid on Mirian Khutsishvili’s activity, who acted as the ethnologist and an effective a camera man at the same time. 2. The analysis of activity of two key women scientists, involved in ethnographical research - Vera Bardavelidze, whose scientific work was related with the study of everyday lifestyle of Georgian people and Nino Brailashvili, who made a great contribution in creation of ethnographical sketches.

Abstract:

On the basis of lyric and epic works, the authors of the article investigate the specific features of the gender picture of the world of the classic of Kabardian literature Fousat Balkarova. The structuring of the holistic material into 5 interrelated sections allows the authors to consistently, close-up consider the thematic, personal, linguistic, chronological and conflict-prone aspects of the poetess' ethnogender consciousness. The historically conditioned process of transformation of social constructs «masculine» and «feminine» of the Adyghe patriarchal society under the pressure of factors of civilization and modernization is shown. The analysis made it possible to reveal in the poetry of F. Balkarova and identify the ontological metacode «woman-dzhigit», marking the dominance of masculine traits in the image of a new, self-sufficient woman of the post-war years. The article also examines a complex of issues related to the accelerated pace of life, the «double repertoire» of women, gender asymmetry, the conflict of two generations, artistic ethnography.

Abstract:

This thesis is a broadly chronological study of representations of Japan and the Japanese in Australian novels, stories and memoirs from the late nineteenth century to the twenty-first century. Adopting Edward Said???s Orientalist notion of the `Other???, it attempts to elaborate patterns in which Australian authors describe and evaluate the Japanese. As well as examining these patterns of representation, this thesis outlines the course of their development and change over the years, how they relate to the context in which they occur, and how they contribute to the formation of wider Australian views on Japan and the Japanese. The thesis considers the role of certain Australian authors in formulating images and ideas of the Japanese ???Other???. These authors, ranging from fiction writers to journalists, scholars and war memoirists, act as observers, interpreters, translators, and sometimes ???traitors??? in their cross-cultural interactions. The thesis includes work from within and outside ???mainstream??? writings, thus expanding the contexts of Australian literary history. The major ???periods??? of Australian literature discussed in this thesis include: the 1880s to World War II; the Pacific War; the post-war period; and the multicultural period (1980s to 2000). While a comprehensive examination of available literature reveals the powerful and continuing influence of the Pacific War, images of ???the stranger???, ???the enemy??? and later ???the ally??? or ???partner??? are shown to vary according to authors, situations and wider international relations. This thesis also examines gender issues, which are often brought into sharp relief in cross-cultural representations. While typical East-West power-relationships are reflected in gender relations, more complex approaches are also taken by some authors. This thesis argues that, while certain patterns recur, such as versions of the ???Cho-Cho-San??? or ???Madame Butterfly??? story, Japan-related works have given some Australian authors, especially women, opportunities to reveal more ???liberated??? viewpoints than seemed possible in their own cultural context. As the first extensive study of Japan in Australian literary consciousness, this thesis brings to the surface many neglected texts. It shows a pattern of changing interests and interactions between two nations whose economic interactions have usually been explored more deeply than their literary and cultural relations.

Abstract:

This thesis is a study of the Korean woman poet Ho Kyongbon (1563-1589) and her poetry. In it, I investigate Ho's two brothers' active involvement in her literary life, particularly her younger brother Ho Kyun's publication of her poetry collection, the Nansorhon chip and promotion of her literary works to Chinese scholars. I also examine late Ming and Qing anthologies which include Ho's poetry to disclose how late Ming and Qing scholars evaluated her poetry and represented her life. I argue that the attention these critics paid to Ho's literary works and talent reflected a blossoming of women's literary culture and a rapid growth in the anthologizing of women's poetry. I also undertake an analysis of Ho's poetry, with particular emphasis on the influence of Tang poetry on her poetic practice. This analysis is accompanied by a discussion of Ho's relationship to the "Tang revival movement" in which her two brothers were fervently engaged. This relationship provides a context through which to better understand not only Ho's particular interest in emulating Tang poetry, but also the very textual qualities of her poetry.

Abstract:

The Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps numbered among its members some of the most important American writers of World War I, Including E. E. Cummings and John Dos Passos. What is less well-known is that the ambulance corps had strong tIes to a pre-war generation of American expatriates, whose participation first created the elite aura of the unit known as the "gentlemen volunteers." Henry James served as chairman until his final illness, and the family of the late Charles Eliot Norton operated the organization in France and America. This study, making use of unpublished archival material, outlines the history of the Norton-Harjes during the war, from its beginnings in Paris and London, to its activities on the Western Front, and its dissolution in late 1917. Around this historical context, the foundations of the unit are traced to Harvard University and an ideal of humanitarian service and social duty drawing from the late nineteenth-century concept of the gentleman. The war writings of the Norton-Harjes authors are examined in view of this historical and cultural evidence. Affirmation of the artist's role in society and criticism of American industrial-commercialism feature in the work of the authors connected with the unit, themes which gained new impetus from the war. A discussion of Charles Eliot Norton's moral aestheticism, expatriation, teaching at Harvard, and attitudes towards war, along with an outline of the Harvard careers of Norton's sons Eliot and Richard and of the future Norton-Harjes writers Cummings, Dos Passos, and Robert Hillyer, make up the chapter following the Introduction, which establishes the background of early American involvement in the war. Henry James' work for the ambulance corps and his move from intense observer to direct participant in war-time is explored in the third chapter. The fourth chapter presents the bulk of the historical information about the unit's war activities while examining the career and writings of Richard Norton, founder and leader of the corps. The succeeding three chapters are devoted to the ambulance volunteers who studied together at Harvard. E. E. Cummings' The Enormous Room is interpreted in light of the author's whole experience with the Norton-Harjes, emphasizing his use of primitivism in support of aesthetic individualism. Robert Hillyer's traditionalism stands opposed to Cummings' Modernist experimentation, but the Harvard professor-poet was equally critical of American industrialism. John Dos Passos' war novels attack the commercial basis of American culture and present as alternatives the rural culture of Spain and the ideal of the gentlemen volunteers as represented by Richard Norton. A brief Epilogue describes the last stage of Norton's war career and the post-war attempts to organize former volunteers into an association and to produce a history of the ambulance service.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the entry of women, during World War I, into industrial employment that men had previously dominated. It attempts to determine if women's wartime activities significantly changed the roles women played in industry and society. Major sources consulted include microfilm of the British Cabinet Minutes and British Cabinet Papers; Parliamentary Debates; memoirs of contemporaries like David Lloyd George, Beatrice Webb, Sylvia Pankhurst, and Monica Cosens; and contemporary newspapers. The examination begins with the early debates concerning the pressing need for labor in war industries, women's recruitment into industry, women's work and plans, the government's arrangements for demobilization, and women's roles in postwar industry. The thesis concludes that women were treated as a transient commodity by the government and the trade unions.

Abstract:

The article covers the issue of the personal psychological safety of police officers. A theoretical analysis of the scientific literature was conducted, which resulted in a definition of the psychological safety of the individual police officer. PhIlosophical interpretations of the term ‘Safety’, in the ancient World, New Age, and the contemporary world have been considered (Platon, T. Gobbs, J.J. Russo, G.V. Gegel, N.A. Berdyaev). The psychological definitions of the term ‘Psychological Safety’ have been analysed (A. Maslow, A. Adler, Sullivan, M.A. Kotik, T. S. Kabachenko, I.A. Baeva, O.Y. Zotova, E.E. Pronina). The article describes specific traits of the professional activity of police officers, e.g., the operational environment, sudden job changes, permanent interaction with criminals, physical and psychological fatigue, high-level responsibility, the lack of sleep and recreation, etc. The study of the specificity of the personal psychological safety of police officers was divided into several phases. The first phase consisted in enquiring, upon which 47% of respondents were found out to feel psychologically unsafe, which proves the relevancy of studying this phenomenon. Furthermore, the technique ‘Motivation Diagnostics’ suggested by A.A. Akindinova was used, which has allowed the dominant needs of police officers to be determined: the need for safety, and the need for self-fulfillment. At the final phase, the authors employed the ‘Free Association Technique’, and have thereby found that 69% of respondents associate their safety with serenity, 62% - with protectiveness, 31% - with confidence, and 23% - with comfort/reliability. Moreover, here are differences in the subjective perception of safety in women (protectiveness), and in men (serenity).

Abstract:

Cervical cancer is the most common gynaecological malignancy worldwide. The most common type of cervical carcinoma is squamous cell carcinoma followed by adenocarcinoma of cervix, which constitutes only 15% of cases. Adenocarcinoma of cervix can be categorized histologically into clear cell, mucinous, endometrioid, serous and mesonephric subtypes. Clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA) most commonly occurs in the ovary, followed by endometrium, vagina, and cervix. Primary CCA of cervix is a rare neoplastic entity, which occurs in young women exposed to diethylstilbestrol (DES) in utero. It is extremely rare in women without in utero DES exposure and in such cases it concerns mostly postmenopausal women. Here, we present a case of 30 year old woman who presented with primary infertility. There was no history of in-utero exposure to diethyl stilbestrol. She was diagnosed a case of cervical fibroid on ultrasonography. Diagnostic hysteroscopy was done and she was found to have friable, vascular growth in endocervix, which was extending to uterine cavity. Biopsy was taken. On histopathology, moderately differentiated clear cell adenocarcinoma of cervix was reported. Through this case, authors would like to highlight the probability of rare occurrence and how to manage challenges posed by cervical cancer in young girl wishing to conceive, stressing on the role of hysteroscopy in diagnosis.

The metal-impregnated carbon fiber-reinforced carbon composite (C/C composite) is expected to be a candidate material for pantograph contact strips of high-speed electric railway vehicles, because its mechanical strength for flexure and impact is much higher than that of the conventional metal-impregnated carbon. The authors have investigated the wear properties of copper-titanium-alloy impregnated C/C composite sliding against a copper disk under an electric current and frequent arc discharges. The tested C/C composite was prepared by press molding and baking of laminated carbon fiber woven sheets. There exists anisotropy in the physical properties originated from the orientation of carbon fiber woven sheets lamination. The C/C composite was slid in two directions, in parallel with or perpendicular to the sheet layer. The test results show that the wear rate in sliding in the parallel direction exceeds that in the perpendicular direction, especially in the cases where the material is subjected to higher current density and more frequent arc discharges.

Abstract:

During World War II, Allied bombing of German-controlled petroleum refineries in Ploesti, Romania, diminished Axis fuel production but cost the Allies hundreds of planes and thousands of lives. Crews of many damaged planes flew partway back to Italy but were forced to crash-land their craft or bail out over Yugoslavia, where many landed on territory controlled by Partisans or Chetniks. Local Yugoslavs (mainly peasants), as well as both Chetniks and Partisans, welcomed them and gave them shelter. They were then evacuated by Allied transport aircraft (principally C-47s) that landed on makeshift airstrips maintained by Partisans or Chetniks. The historiography of these rescues may be divided into document-based studies, prepared principally by US military personnel based on official records; and memory-based studies by pro-Mihailović authors based principally on participant memoirs. Whereas memory-based studies uniformly adopted a Serb nationalist viewpoint, document-based studies showed no favoritism and portrayed various factions working in parallel to rescue Allied airmen. After Milošević fell in 2000, the Foreign Minister of Serbia and Montenegro, Vuk Drašković, in cooperation with the US Embassy, united the movement to valorize downed airmen and local efforts to rehabilitate Mihailović. Whether deliberately or not, US officials thereby undercut human rights activists in Serbia, and non-Serbs throughout the former Yugoslavia, who saw Mihailović as a war criminal, collaborator, and inspiration for war crimes and genocide in the wars of the 1990s.

Abstract:

"Gamete donation is a procedure that includes the “reproductive others” in the process of conception. There are numerous dilemmas related to donation while various European countries have different ways of solving them. In the Republic of Serbia, only voluntary gamete donation is allowed, and donors can only be women and men from the general population, or women included in the In vitro fertilization process. The donors remain anonymous to the child which was conceived with their help. Overcoming infertility in this way usually includes building public awareness, especially when it is not a common practice in that society, and work should be done on forming positive attitudes towards the donation. Experience from other countries indicates that sperm donation usually does not represent a problem, but there is greater demand for egg cells than the existing supply, which is an additional reason for studying attitudes and planning appropriate campaigns. In this study, the attitudes of university students (N = 503; 206 young men, 297 young women) towards gamete donation were analyzed, as were the differences in the extent of basic values about acceptance of the donation. We used several questions to determine the attitudes towards donations, including those specially designed for this research and the Schwartz Personal Values Questionnaire (Schwartz, 2002). University students are young people who represent not only potential donors but also the everyday environment of couples who require a donation. As highly educated individuals, they have the potential to be attitude holders. The results have shown generally positive attitudes of the students towards donation. The differences in certain basic values among the participants who support donation were obtained only for the sub-sample of young men: a more pronounced Openness to change and Self-transcendence. The authors present some specific ideas regarding the promotion of gamete donation in general – for example, we believe that in the supporting campaign for donation it would be more appropriate to use Self-transcendence than Openness to change."

Abstract:

Exile is one of the central motifs of the 20th century European culture and literature; it is closely related to the historical events throughout this century and especially those related to World War II. In the culture of East Central Europe, the phenomenon of exile has been greatly determined by the context of socialism and post-socialist transformations that caused several waves of emigration from this part of Europe to the West or other parts of the world. It is interesting to compare cultures of East Central Europe, the historical situations of which both during World War II and after the collapse of socialism were different, e.g. Latvian and ex-Yugoslavian ones. In Latvia, exile is basically related to the emigration of a great part of the population in the 1940s and the issue of their possible return to the renewed Republic of Latvia in the early 1990s, whereas the countries of the former Yugoslavia experienced a new wave of emigration as a result of the Balkan War in the 1990s. Exile has been regarded by a great number of the 20th century philosophers, theorists, and scholars of diverse branches of studies. An important aspect of this complex phenomenon has been studied by psychoanalytical theorists. According to the French poststructuralist feminist theorist Julia Kristeva, the state of exile as a socio-cultural phenomenon reflects the inner schisms of subjectivity, particularly those of a feminine subject. Hence, exile/stranger/foreigner is an essential model of the contemporary subject and exile turns from a particular geographical and political phenomenon into a major symbol of modern European culture. The present article regards the sense of exile as a part of the narrator’s subjective world experience in the works by the Yugoslav writer Dubravka Ugrešič (“The Museum of Unconditional Surrender”, in Croatian and English, 1996) and Latvian émigré author Margita Gūtmane (“Letters to Mother”, in Latvian, 1998). Both authors relate the sense of exile to identity problems, personal and culture memory as well as loss. The article focuses on the issues of loss and memory as essential elements of the narrative of exile revealed by the metaphors of photograph and museum. Notwithstanding the differences of their historical situations, exile as the subjective experience reveals similar features in both authors’ works. However, different artistic means are used in both authors’ texts to depict it. Hence, Dubravka Ugrešič uses irony, whereas Margita Gūtmane provides a melancholic narrative of confession; both authors use photographs to depict various aspects of memory dynamic, but Gūtmane primarily deals with private memory, while Ugrešič regards also issues of cultural memory. The sense of exile in both authors’ works appears to mark specific aspects of feminine subjectivity.

Poverty is a persisting problem in the world. Therefore an examination of the women poverty is a very important field. Women living in poverty are increased as a following reason: 1) a growth of female-headed households, 2) intra-household inequalities and bias against women. For this reason the alleviation of poverty requires determining the women poverty levels. The data used in this study is obtained from the project on Household Income, Consumption, Saving Behavior and Poverty Level in Adana Province conducted the authors of this study and financed by Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. Probit model is used for determining the women poverty in Turkey. The results of this study are described the women poverty levels in Turkey based on the determinants of poverty on some socio- demographic characteristics of female-headed households. In the light of findings some policy prescriptions will be determined for reducing deprivation and vulnerability of women poverty and intra-household inequalities in Turkey.

Abstract:

Abstract A configuration of a plain (sliding) bearing system is the use of a reinforced fabric comprising a woven structure of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and other fibers integrated with a phenolic resin system used to both encapsulate the fibrous materials and provide adhesion to metallic and other substrates. This construction promotes dimensional stability and improves thermal conductivity. These PTFE linings offer exceptionally low coefficient friction. The bushing is recommended for high loads when combined with low surface speeds. These fully self-lubricating bushings offer good contamination resistance, no stick-slip and excellent cold flow resistance. This technique has shown longer life of 7 to 10 times that of standard steel-backed, bronze-sintered and PTFE overlay. Proprietary self-lubricating PTFE fibers are applied directly to the steel. This polytetrafluoroethylene is woven onsite and applied directly to the steel. The woven liner is compressible and able to absorb distortions in mating surfaces. PTFE fabrics processed with phenolic resins can entrap air within the cured fabric liner. The entrapped air has the potential to affect bearing performance by reduction of bonding area and reduction in load carrying capabilities. Air release agents can be used to limit the amount of air entrapment within the liner system. The intent of this research is to determine what, if any, affect the addition of commercially available air release agents would have on PTFE bearing performance. Experimental wear testing at various static and dynamic bearing conditions with and without contamination (de-ice fluid), including at high temperature (325°F) were conducted on eighteen specimens. Peel strength test were also conducted. All these tests were conducted based on prevalent industry standards. Parameters of static load resistance (deflection and permanent set) and loaded torque were found to be unaffected by the use of an air release agent when compared to baseline articles manufactured without such air releasing agents. Results showed that by integration of a commercially available air release agent into the processing of a PTFE based, phenolic resin bearing liner system, one can reduce variability and help stabilize wear performance. Specimens prepared with air release agent showed improved oscillation (fatigue) test results. Further, air release agent also resulted in a 35% increase in peel strength performance when tested per industry standard methods. Contamination with de-ice fluid showed no negative performance results. While the investigations here used only one ratio of additive among all tested bearings, but other concentrations are possible. Authors would like to pursue additional studies in future to determine the amount of air release agent that can reliably be added to remove the maximum air release without affecting the overall bearing performance. By finding this, a threshold of additive can also be determined.

Abstract How can a business develop sustainable societal relationships in a world that is often described as volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous? While public expectations of companies are complicated and continuously changing, there are clear underlying trends in modern society that shape this relationship. Understanding these trends allows a company to develop the capability of proactively managing societal relationships. The findings of the study are especially relevant for industries that visibly operate in the public space and should anticipate societal resistance. This paper first describes the societal trends that shaped the way people and organizations have interacted since the Second World War. In this period increasing environmental and social awareness and assertiveness developed along three evolutionary paths: –active public discourse that continuously pushes the boundaries of what is deemed acceptable and desirable, with increasing focus on human values and space for the individual;–industry sectors and international organizations that try to preempt new societal expectations with voluntary guidelines and self-regulation; and–governments that formalize important and matured parts of the public discourse and voluntary guidelines in laws and regulations. Secondly, the authors adopt a practical model to describe how companies have struggled to keep up with this continuously evolving and dynamic societal landscape due to lack of adaptation. An increasingly defensive and reactive business approach to societal pressure has led to a low point in trust from stakeholders. To regain trust and their social license to operate companies need to take a more proactive approach to societal relationships, which require both organizational and cultural change. Finally, the authors take the example from the safety journey, where the oil and gas industry has been very successful in demonstrating that excellence in safety is both a moral obligation and good for the bottom line. The same applies to excellence in societal relationships. Using the evolutionary model of safety culture with its maturity ladder as analogue, the authors provide a practical and value-driven framework to guide companies on their organizational and cultural change journey towards effective societal relationship management.
