Abstract:
Background:There is limited evidence regarding the impact of the Mediterranean Diet (Med Diet) on autoimmune diseases although it has been proposed that adherence to the Med Diet may decrease the risk of certain autoimmune diseases. However, the potential usefulness of the Med Diet as a high-quality dietary pattern for other autoimmune diseases such as SLE has not yet been investigated. Objectives:The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential association between the adherence to the Med Diet and disease activity, damage accrual and SLE-related clinical markers in a large cohort of women with SLE.Methods:In this cross-sectional study, we assessed Med Diet adherence through a 14-item questionnaire in 253 women with SLE (mean age 46.74 ± 12.70 years). The SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI-2K) and the SDI Damage Index were used to asses disease activity and disease-related damage, respectively. Levels of C-reactive protein (CRP; mg/dL), homocysteine (Hcy; mol/L), anti-double stranded DNA antibodies (anti-dsDNA) (IU/mL), complement C3 (mg/dL), and complement C4 (mg/dL) were determined. Results:The Med Diet adherence score was classified as follows: low adherence (≤ 5 points); medium adherence (6–9 points) and good adherence (≥ 10 points). Only 50.2% of the SLE women had good adherence to the Med Diet. The ANCOVA models showed significant differences between patients with good adherence to the Med Diet and those with medium and low adherence in SLEDAI (p ≤ 0.001) and SDI (p ≤ 0.001). Age, medical treatment (immunosuppressors, corticoids, or antimalarials), smoking status, and body mass index (BMI) were included as confounding factors. The odds ratio (OR) for having active SLE (SLEDAI ≥ 5) or the presence of damage (SDI ≥ 1) was lower among patients whose Med Diet score was higher (p ≤ 0.001).Conclusion:Adherence to the Med Diet influences disease activity and damage accrual in SLE women. Thus, these patients would benefit from nutritional counselling and education on modification, to help adapt their lifestyles towards the Med Diet pattern. This would help slow the progression of SLE and the damage it causes.References:[1]Sedaghat F, Jessri M, Behrooz M, Mirghotbi M, Rashidkhani B. Abstract:
Herbal medicine and their preparations from plants, herbs, and animals both in parts and whole forms have been used since the early days of humankind and are still used throughout the world for health promotion and treatment of disease. The study identified the usefulness of Entrepreneurial Women Indigenous Herb Sellers (EWIHSs) in health care delivery system in Nigeria. It also identified the nature, classification and categorization of EWIHSs at Bode/Ibuko Market, Oyo State, Nigeria and it consequently, examined the groups that have knowledge of treatment of human illnesses and diseases. The study was conducted using both primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected through observation and oral interview of 18 EWIHSs at the Bode/Ibuko herbal market in Ibadan, Oyo state. The study utilized thematic analysis for the qualitative data collected. The study identified two major classifications of EWIHSs (Herbs and roots sellers’ category and those that deal with sales of animals in whole form and parts such as Lion heads, Chameleon, bats, monkeys, owls, vulture and so on) which was noted to be sub-divided into five categories of EWIHSs as follows: (i) Those that sell both plants and animals parts and in whole form whether dead or alive; (ii) those that sell purely plants parts or in whole form, (iii) those that sell purely animal parts or in whole form and (iv) those that sell mineral materials dug from the ground such as camphor, kafura (Naphthalene), Kanafuru (Clove) and so forth and finally (v) those that sell the combinations of one to four (i to iv) above. Others that were attached to EWIHSs in terms of providing herbal materials for the public sales are being called different names such as: Iya Oko (Village women); Oni Taba Juku (snuff sellers or powdered tobacco); Oni Iyere (Black pepper sellers), and Alubosa Ayu (Allium sativum - Garlic); Oni Poroporo (Solanum aviculare sellers), Bara (Bitter melon); Isude; Baka, Epa ikun (belongs to the family Solanaceae) and finally Oni Yari (indigenous comb sellers - the women in this category sell indigenous combs, mirrors and so on). All of them together with EWIHSs are being called different names such as Lekuleja, Alagbo Omo, Oniwosiwosi, Alate, Elewe Omo and so forth. It was observed from the study that not all these categories of EWIHSs have the knowledge of treatment in terms of combination of materials for treatment of human illnesses and diseases, as a result public need to be cautious as regards receiving prescription and treatment from them. This is a dangerous development that may have adverse consequences on the unsuspecting customers who may not be able to distinguish between sellers or healers. The study recommended that public need to be cautious on who is to approach when they go for indigenous herbal treatment. It is suggested that the intending customers of EWIHSs must first see guidance from officers of the herbal sellers especially the secretary or the president in the herbal market. Finally, Policy implications include the need for government to improve the knowledge of the sellers in health care and also encourage the sellers through improved access to loan so as to enable the sellers contribute positively to the broader health objectives of Nigerian society.

Abstract:
Most of Moslem societies define the role of woman in the purely domestic sector. Some people consider that Islam stands against women’s role in public sectors believing that it has roots in the context of the prophet’s time. This work shows that there is no prohibitation for woman to take parts in the public and social affairs including in the area of political role. It was the case that some women companions of the prophet participated in the political role including Aisyah the wife of Nabi Saw, Asma binti Abu Bakar, Ummu Athiyah, Ummu Hani’ and Rubayyi’ bint Mu’awidz. In this paper, the writer focuses on woman companion hadith transmitters who are directly wrapped up in the missionary work with the prophet. In addition, this paper also shows the relation between woman companion transmitter activities and their hadith transmission, under assumption that the role of woman would influence the texts of the transmitted hadiths. It is because, as a text, hadith was transmitted in the certain context and condition. Accordingly, every transmitter had different hadith transmission based on her context, status, profession, and even gender construction. Therefore, this paper discusses the woman companion transmitters who play their role in the field of politics and also their influence in their transmitted hadiths

Abstract:
Background. A pregnancy is described unintended if it is either unwanted or mistimed. The former occurs when no child or no more children are desired, and the latter is when the conception occurs earlier than the desired time, but wanted later. Unwanted pregnancy causes a serious health, economic, and social problem to the woman and her family. In the study area, there is limited data on unintended pregnancy. Therefore, this study fills this gap by studying the magnitude of unintended pregnancy and its associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care in the study area. Methods. A facility-based cross-sectional study was done from 1 March to 1 April 2019, among 612 randomly selected pregnant women attending antenatal care at Bako Tibe district public health facility. The data were collected via interview using a structured and pretested questionnaire. They were entered into EpiData Version 3.1 and SPSS Version 23 for cleaning and analyses. The variables, which were significant at P≤0.2 in the bivariate logistic regression, were included in the multivariable analysis. The direction and strength of statistical association were measured by an odds ratio with 95% CI. A variable with a P value < 0.05 was considered a significantly associated factor with the outcome one. Results. In this study, the prevalence of unintended pregnancy was 33.3%, at 95% CI (29.8, 37.3). The factors that had significant association with unintended pregnancy were family size≥6 (AOR=8.0, 95% CI: 1.38–46.66), women who did not communicate about family planning with their husbands (AOR=2.8, 95% CI: 1.50–5.20), and parity≥5 (AOR=3.0, 95% CI: 1.34–6.8). Conclusion. About one-third of the pregnant women reported that their pregnancy was unintended. Parity, family size, and lack of spousal communication showed a significant association with the problem. To decrease the current level of unintended pregnancy in the area, the Bako Tibe District Health Bureau and the health workers should work harder to scale up spousal communication on family planning.

Abstract:
Subject area Social Entrepreneurship. Study level/applicability This case study can be used on the module on introduction to social entrepreneurship for postgraduate students specializing in Social Entrepreneurship or Social Work. Case overview This case explores the difference between social entrepreneurship and idealism. It captures the journey of Charlene Vaz and Kavita Gonsalves, two passionate young women, who formed “The Bake Collective” (TBC). Kavita and Charlene are both full-time employees, who spend their weekends and evenings running TBC and through bake sells raise funds for supporting social causes. The women have been able to get a teacher hired for differently abled children, provide water purifiers to victims of the Nepal earthquake, furnish a classroom in a school for less privileged children and provide teaching material for schools in over 400 villages in the State of Maharashtra in India. The case highlights the power of volunteering for a cause that can result in developing a social enterprise. It helps to unfold the steps undertaken to kick-start the cause as well as the risks involved in the start-up stage. It also discusses the measures that can be taken to mitigate the risks in the start-up phase and the ways by which social entrepreneurs can scale and grow their programme. Expected learning outcomes From this case, students will learn about the factors that lead to the germination of a social enterprise and identify characteristics of social entrepreneurs. They will be able to understand critical factors required to sustain start-up enterprises. The case will also enable students to explore systems and processes that need to be designed to sustain the start-up phase. Further, the case will help students to brainstorm on growth strategies for social enterprises. Supplementary materials Teaching Notes are available for educators only. Abstract:
In this study we have analysed from an intersectional perspective two textbooks Historia 1b and Progress Gold A which are purposed to be used as teaching material in Swedish schools in the subjects of History and English. Our question and reason for doing the analysis is to emphasise and make the variety of women in the books visible in order to compare that variety to the one that is demanded by the Swedish curriculum. The analysis is made from an ideology critical perspective and contains quantitative elements. Our conclusion is that the material contains both excluding and including features. Some intersectional categories are well represented while others, like functionality and religion, are not. This has a direct effect on the possibility to discover variation amongst the women represented in the material. Previous research states that it is not enough to leave the descriptions without problematizing them, which we found incoherent with the analysed books.

Bayingana, Claude. "The prevalence of members of the "red complex" in pregnant women as revealed by PCR and BANA hydrolysis." Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2005. http://etd.uwc.ac.za/index.php?module=etd&amp.

Full text
Abstract:
Increased levels of oestrogen and progesterone during pregnancy may lead to periodontal disease. The anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria called red complex (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythensis and Treponema denticola) are frequently associated with periodontal disease. Periodontopathogens produce toxins and enzymes which can enter the bloodstream and cross the placenta to harm the foetus. The response of the mother&rsquo<br>s immune system to infection by these periodontopathogens, brings about the release of inflammatory mediators which may trigger preterm labour or result in low birth-weight infants. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of red complex, using BANA and PCR in subginginval plaque samples from pregnant women. Subgingival plaque samples were obtained from pregnant women between the ages of 17 to 45 years attending a Mitchells Plain ante-natal clinic. Plaque samples were analyzed by the enzymatic BANA-test for detection of the presence of red complex and DNA was extracted and analyzed using 16 rDNA-Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).<br /> <br /> Seventy-nine percent of pregnant women showed gingival index scores of &ge<br>1 of which 74.24% harboured by at least one of the members of the red complex. P.gingivalis was the most prevalent of the three members of the red complex. Findings of this study confirmed a need for dental preventive measures in pregnant women and microbial monitoring of suspected periodontopathogenes. This could be achieved by joint cooperation between Maternity Obstetric Units (MOU), Dentistry and oral microbiology departments. The results of this study revealed that although PCR is more sensitive than BANA in detecting members of the red complex, BANA showed a better association with the indices used to diagnose periodontal disease.

Full text
Abstract:
The main form of treatment is done through surgery called a mastectomy, which means that the entire breast surgically removed. Another common surgical procedure is performing a mastectomy where the entire breast is removed. Women's breasts symbolize femininity and most women who have undergone a mastectomy affected in different ways by physical, psychological and social changes. Aim: To highlight women's experience after undergoing a mastectomy due to breast cancer. Method: A general literature study based on twelve scientific articles. Data were collected through searches of scientific articles in the databases CINAHL and MEDLINE. Results: Based on the compilation of articles results revealed five subcategories. Based on these then created a main category, not just the loss of a breast. It appeared that women experienced a change in their body image, their femininity and a sense of not feeling normal. The women described an absence of sufficient information in connection with undergoing a mastectomy. Conclusion: The study explains that women who have undergone a mastectomy due to breast cancer experience stresses due to bodily changes. With good information and support from family and friends its easier for the women to deal with the situation after the surgery. Clinical significance: The study results can provide healthcare information valuable for understanding women's experiences after undergoing a mastectomy and how they see themselves after having surgery to remove a breast associated with breast cancer.

Abstract:
Åtta kvinnor intervjuades, samtliga bosatta i Stockholmsområdet.

Abstract:
Cervical cancer, caused by oncogenic (high risk [hr]) human papillomavirus (HPV) subtypes, is the most common cancer in women in Guatemala and the most common cause of cancer mortality in women aged 15-44 years. Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) with onsite cryotherapy “test-and-treat” is recommended for underserved Guatemalan indigenous rural women. This research assessed: 1) hrHPV infection prevalence in women screened by VIA; 2) Sensitivity and specificity of VIA in detecting hrHPV infection and cytologically identified precancerous and cancerous lesions; and 3) Factors associated with hrHPV infection. Analysis of anonymous data collected during VIA clinics in 2013 (N = 205) and 2017 (N = 234) for indigenous women aged 21-65 years in six villages showed 22.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]=18.7%-27.2%) had hrHPV cervical infection. VIA results were abnormal in 5.9% (95%CI=3.8%-8.8%). Only nine VIA exams in 89 women with hrHPV were abnormal (Sensitivity=10.1%, 95%CI=4.7%-18.3%), although abnormal VIA was associated with hrHPV (Prevalence Ratio [PR])=1.8; 95%CI=1.1-3.1; P=.05). Of 221 women who had VIA, hrHPV nucleic acid testing and liquid preparation cytology (equivalent to Papanicolaou or “Pap”) testing, 10 (4.7% [95%CI=2.3%-8.5%]) had abnormal cytological results, including one cancer, four high- and five low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. VIA sensitivity and specificity for detection of precancerous cytological abnormalities and cancerous lesions were 20.0% (95%CI=2.5%-55.6%) and 96.0% (95%CI=92.3%-98.3%) respectively. In contrast, hrHPV sensitivity and specificity were 100% (95%CI=71.7%-100%) and 88.7% (95%CI: 83.9%-92.7%). In both years combined, women aged fewer than 29 years or reporting fewer than four pregnancies were more likely to have hrHPV cervical infection (36.8%, 27.3%, respectively) than those who were older or reported more pregnancies (18.7; P=.025, respectively); 60.0% reported some form of modern contraception. Progesterone injections or implant users were more likely to have hrHPV infection (31.9%) than women using other or no contraceptives (19.5%); PR=1.6; 95%CI=1.1-2.4; P=.01). These data suggest that VIA may not be sufficiently sensitive for use in cervical cancer screening. “Test-and-treat” screening using hrHPV real-time testing, as recommended by the World Health Organization may be preferable to VIA, and may be acceptable using self-collected specimens.

Ndiyah, Y. Florence. "The emotional well-being of the polygynous women in Lola Shoneyin’s novel 'The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives'." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/78710.

Full text
Abstract:
Set against the backdrop of the “Anglophone crisis” ravaging parts of Cameroon, my novel, The Things We Don’t Talk About, centres on two young women who, through monogamous and polygamous marriages as well as extra-marital affairs, seek the identities of “wife” acceptable to their society, even as separatists in their home region battle for an autonomous political identity from the government in a country where they are the minority. Polygamy and patriarchal oppression are themes covered in Nigerian writer Lola Shoneyin’s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, originally published in 2010. Other relevant novels to this thesis are those by Nigerian authors, mainly Buchi Emecheta’s work 1979 The Joys Of Motherhood (2008) and Chinua Achebe’s 1958 masterpiece Things Fall Apart (2008). Reference will be made to Senegalese writer Mariama Bâ's novel Une Si Longue Lettre (So Long A Letter) (1981) originally published in French in 1980. Polygamy is still relevant in contemporary African society, especially among underprivileged women. This fact is reflected by Shoneyin who, at the end of her novel, keeps the three uneducated Alao co-wives in the oppressive polygamous marriage she has depicted, even though their husband permits them to leave. Bolanle, the educated, fourth wife, decides to divorce. While the man’s domination comes naturally in a patriarchal culture, the women’s freedom and emotional well-being are subject to conditions laid down by her society, but ones which she can control through her response to her predicament. This thesis uses Antonovsky’s theory of salotugenesis and its principles of the Generalised Resistance Resources (GRRs), as well as the theory of Africana Womanism, which is linked to feminist empathy, to demonstrate how these female protagonists adapt to and cope with the adverse circumstances of their lives, and hence work towards an identity they are comfortable with. Emphasis will be laid on the seven GRRs of Ego strength, co-wife bonding, co-wife rank, “joy in children”, education and skills, economic freedom, and spiritual intervention and their use by Baba Segi’s wives constructively to control their responses to subjugation in polygamy; only, at times the outcome is short-lived or counter-productive. “Talking” and “silence” as means of gaining emotional relief are also explored, as these characters seek to mitigate the adverse effects of being part of a polygamous household, for fulfilment in their polygamous marriages.<br>Thesis (PhD) - University of Pretoria, 2020.<br>Unit for Creative Writing<br>PhD<br>Restricted

Through an ethnographic approach this doctoral dissertation analyzes the practices and discourses of the Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project - QWOCMAP, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) based in San Francisco Bay Area, United States. This NGO carries filmic training and creates films, organizing an annual film festival for the viewing of this audiovisual production. Said organization seeks to bring together and be part of collectivities that identify themselves with feminist social movements in that region, promoting direct actions to organize lesbians, women, queer and trans people of color. Inspired by ?feminism of difference? political proposals, the organization nurtures local conceptions around what they call 'artivism', a neologism and a practice that brings together art and activism. The group encourages different modes of subjectivation and performative ways to build QTWPOC (queer, trans, women and people of color) "communities", in a manner to occupy urban public spaces and gain visibility. Their initiatives and creations seek to develop alternative ways of representing these "marginalized" subjects, while envisioning possible futures and at the same time nurturing ways to promote social justice through art and activism. This research was based on a one-year fieldwork experience with this NGO, acting as part of its internal team throughout its daily activities, during its film festival and in one of its audiovisual training workshops, held in the City of Richmond, California, in 2014. In the proposed analyzes in this work, I have described: the activist scene and the sociocultural context in the San Francisco Bay Area in the contemporary struggles against gentrification; the process involved in the production of their film festival and on its realization; the film production environment through a workshop of filmic training; the dynamics and processes of identity and subjectivation catalyzed through film production and by the festival; and the local perspectives concerning QWOCMAP's ?artivism?, nurtured around notions of transformation and social justice and through the occupation of public spaces to build QTWPOC "communities".

Suzuki, Saeko. "Popular educational books for women as cultural commodities in early modern Japan : a case study of Takara-bako and Oshie-gusa." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/58228.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examines joshiyō ōrai-mono (popular educational publications for women in early modern Japan) as cultural commodities in the transmission of knowledge in relation to three areas: texts/illustrations, commercial publishers, and readers as clients. It also seeks to understand that woodblock prints have the characteristics of repeatable commodities. The project focuses on two encyclopaedia-type joshiyō ōrai-mono books: the 1814 edition of Onna daigaku takara-bako or The Treasure Box of the Women’s Greater Learning, and the second edition of Onna daigaku oshie-gusa or The Elementary Textbook of the Women’s Greater Learning, published in the mid-1840s. Comparing the two books reveals some notable issues. First, the commonality of the contents and physical characteristics of the two books shows that their publisher, Izumiya Ichibē, reused the texts, and copied the design of Takara-bako, a best-selling ōrai-mono, to produce his new book Oshie-gusa. Second, previous scholarship that has developed the literary genre framework for early modern print books cannot always explain the encyclopaedia type of popular educational materials because of their cross-genre characteristics. Third, Takara-bako emphasizes knowledge of waka poetry for female readers as well as providing the list of major female occupation catalogue in that period. Fourth, Oshie-gusa increased the practical contents such as Yin-yang divination and male-female compatibility as a handbook of marriage and family. Fifth, both books stress clothing-related matters, advocating not only household responsibilities but also female virtue based on neo-Confucianist ideology. The comparative analysis of Takara-bako and Oshie-gusa as cultural commodities has demonstrated the commercialization of knowledge in the Tokugawa period (1603-1868). Understanding the mechanisms of commercialization of printed knowledge can help us understand knowledge transmission that is de-commercialized or commercialized in different ways in electronic environments.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>Asian Studies, Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
This chapter tells the story of how migration and intermarriage changed Baja California's social and racial landscape at the turn of the century. It draws heavily from census records and company reports written by managers and administrators who kept a close eye on the workers' health and productivity and, to a greater extent, their personal lives. The Compagnie du Boleo kept detailed records of European managerial workers who married Mexican women. Baja Californian historian Pablo Martínez published birth, marriage, and census records of different municipalities in Baja California that allowed me to trace marriages and families into the twentieth century.

Abstract:
While the legal defenses of martyrdom-seeking operations of al-Qaʿida jurists and their sympathizers emphasize individual acts of self-renunciation, the state-building project of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s self-declared caliphate of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) instrumentalized martyrdom-seeking operations as fundamental to its political objectives. Alongside the arguments of Abu Bakr al-Naji and Abu ʿAbdullah al-Muhajir, the authors and jurists of ISIS—foremost among them Turki al-Binʿali, a former student of Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi and grand mufti of ISIS—maintained Jihadi-Salafi narratives of theodicy and self-renunciation but identified specific gender roles for men and women in the state-building project. Women were to practice self-renunciation away from the battlefield and within the household, where they were to prepare the next generation of fighters. Men, on the other hand, were expected to go forth and fight in God’s cause, seeking martyrdom if necessary.

Abstract:
Exploring the artistic paths of the two Algerian Berberi women artists under French colonisation, this chapter aims to demonstrate how art could be transformed into a powerful expression of anticolonial and feminist thought. Baya Mahieddine (1931–98) distinguished herself in painting while Taos Amrouche (1913–76) was a singer of lyrical Berber songs (chants). In 1947, Surrealist André Breton came across both of their work and fascinated by their authentic artistic style, described them as the ‘beginning of an age of concord and radical break’ with the artistic thought of the era. The social and personal trajectory of the two women gave their art a dimension of the gendered imagination nourished by their ethnic origins. A quest for identity guided their work towards self–understanding, constituting a path to an exploration of the ‘other’. In order to show the impact of their personal experiences on their work, as well as the feminist thinking that emerges along the way, this chapter delves into the social and historical conditions of their artistic practices.

Abstract:
This chapter highlights diverse influences that resulted in the film Blood and Black Lace (6 donne per l'assassino). It explains how Mario Bava and his co-scriptwriters expunged all traces of humour from the story, eliminating the annoying comic interludes that plagued the film La ragazza che sapeva troppo. It also investigates how the makers of Blood and Black Lace drew from other sources and enhanced the Gothic mood that characterised the Edgar Wallace Krimis cycle. The chapter describes the ways in which violence in films is directed towards the female body, such as the opening sequence of the film La maschera del demonio where the character Asa is tortured with the titular spiked mask and burned at the stake. It discusses how horror underlined a radical change in the erotic imagery of the average Italian.

Abstract:
Japan is a group-oriented, communitarian society but those women who succeed will often be quite individualistic. The first three role models interviewed are three strikingly individualistic characters who have nevertheless sought a strong community role, aiming in two of the cases to convert the community to their cause. They are: Baba Kanako, who started a school-uniform recycling business on Shikoku Island and now advises other mothers all over Japan; Ishizaka Noriko who took over her family waste-processing business in order to turn it environmentalist; and Oikawa Hideko, who took her family denim business upmarket after her husband died and then found herself running an evacuation centre during the devastating 2011 tsunami.

Abstract:
This chapter explores feminist engagements with religion in works by Nawal Sa’dawi and Salwa Bakr. It reads Sa’dawi’s Suqut al-Imam (1987) and Jannat wa Iblis (1992) as feminist dystopias which employ unconventional narrative techniques to augment the dystopic effect and take issue with the founding texts of monotheism as historic vehicles for female oppression. It discusses Salwa Bakr’s rehabilitation of Zulaykha in Wasf al-Bulbul (1993) and explores Al-ʿAraba al-Dhahibiyya la Tasʿad ila al-Samaʾ (1991) by the same author as a critique of religion via the trope of madness, paying attention to how religion, as belief, custom, institution and law, is implicated in the plight of women in the text. The discussion also takes in the Alifa Rifʿat’s stories as a rare example of Islamic literature admitted to the canon. Each of these four chapters begins with a contextual introduction.
