Este estudo foi realizado entre abril e setembro de 2008 e relata a ocorrência de miíases humanas causadas por Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) em São Gonçalo no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Para a coleta das larvas, foi utilizada vaselina líquida ou sólida para sufocar as larvas, que foram então preservadas em etanol 70% e enviadas para o Instituto Oswaldo Cruz para identificação. Chapter 3 examines how white spouses understand their own whiteness in these relationships as well as how their black partners see them as white. In Rio de Janeiro, white spouses redrew, pushed against, and bridged over ethnoracial boundaries through emphasizing race mixture in their ancestry. In Los Angeles, whites had less flexibility in navigating ethnoracial boundaries, yet bridged over class differences. They also completely changed the meaning of the boundary by converting it from a racial one to an ethnic one full of many “ethnic options.” In both sites, there were whites with an affiliative ethnicity for blackness, but this was more prevalent among white Carioca wives who understood themselves as negra frustradas or frustrated black women-frustrated because of their whiteness. Black partners in both research sites largely considered their white spouses unquestionably white. As a consequence, this chapter reveals that ethnoracial boundaries were more flexible and permeable for white spouses than black spouses in both societies.

This book explores the stigmatizing or discriminatory experiences of ordinary people and how they respond to such experiences, along with the factors that affected their courses of action. Drawing on more than 400 in-depth interviews with African Americans in New York suburbs, Black Brazilians in and around Rio de Janeiro, and Arab Palestinians, Ethiopian Jews, and Mizrahi Jews in Israel, the book investigates how national configurations of cultural repertoires and group boundaries influence experiences of and responses to stigmatization and discrimination. To this end, the book describes the incidents where respondents—middle- and working-class men and women—were treated unfairly and the interactions where they felt underestimated, overscrutinized, misunderstood, feared, overlooked, shunned, or discriminated against. This introduction explains the book's approach for analyzing how groupness is organized around race, ethnicity, phenotype, nationality, or religion, as well as the challenges and questions it addresses, and how the study was undertaken.
