Abstract:
Since the Civil Rights Act of 1964, United States prisons have begun hiring women to work as guards in male prisons. In recent years, this policy has been challenged in the courts on two grounds: first, that women guards are a security risk, and second, that they invade prisoners' privacy. Research cited in this article questions the validity of both of these claims. Women guards appear to reduce tensions in male prisons and to be in less danger than the male guards. Three criteria are suggested for evaluating privacy invasion in particular cases, and using these criteria it appears that most

Abstract In the years immediately following World War II, cities and townships across the United States implemented public safety programs to oversee road crossing for children outside schools. The crossing guards assigned to coordinate safe passage at busy intersections were primarily women and, as part-time workers, were a distinct sector of an expanding public sector workforce. This article highlights the origins of these public safety initiatives and how crossing guards formed associations in the 1950s and 1960s to secure economic improvements. Drawing from qualitative interviews, I suggest that some ‘mixed race’ women put into play racialized performances, demonstrating a desire to create new meanings out of imposed hierarchical and dualistic racial orders. They effectively take advantage of multiple, dynamic, and ambiguous racialized spaces. I begin by critiquing recent examinations of performativity in geography, pointing out

According to Nazi statistics, in 1945, approximately 10% of concentration and death camp guards were women. And yet, the Aufseherin, or female camp guard, is barely there in both Holocaust historiography and literature. This is due to their relatively low numbers, gendered readings of the Holocaust, including the post-war categorisation of all women as victims of National Socialism, as well as reluctance to examine female perpetration. This reluctance extends into fiction, which has tended to focus on Holocaust victims not perpetrators due to a long-held belief that it’s unseemly at best, unet
