Abstract:
From the early 1940s Gusiiland (Kenya) underwent a series of transformations that pushed bridewealth to unheralded levels. As a result, many young couples could not afford a proper marriage and eloped. Some fathers forced their daughters into marriages with men wealthy enough to give cattle; many of these women ran off instead with more desirable men. In the hundreds of resulting court cases, Gusii debated the relative weight to be given to bridewealth, parental approval and female consent in marriage. Young people did not reject marriage, but fought against senior men who would ignore women's wishes. Gusii court elders usually agreed with fathers and husbands but also believed that female consent did carry some significance.

Abstract:
Transition rituals are prominent practices among African traditional communities. Among the Gusii community of western Kenya the ritual is performed for both boys and girls. The boys are taken through circumcision while girls go through clitoridectomy. The ritual for girls is widely criticized and opposed by among others the Christian Church. The ritual for girls is resisted on several grounds, but it still persists. The question which many have asked is, why this persistence? This paper raises a number of arguments among them being that; in Africa, gender and human sexuality are celebrated through painful rituals. Men and women are made rather than born. In this discussion, I argue that opposition to clitoridectomy is ill informed, because it is the element of the pain that accompanies the ritual that is the reason why the ritual persists. The paper draws equivalents between the Gusii traditional transition ritual with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, namely that from a theological perspective, the rituals should be perceived constructively as preparatory for Christian evangelization as they point to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is suggested that the Church should view the rituals constructively instead of opposing them. This situation, among other factors, has over the years rendered ineffective the Church’s efforts at evangelization not only in Gusii community but also in other African communities where this ritual is upheld

Abstract:
Abstract:This article examines the history of rape prosecutions in the African courts of Gusiiland, Kenya, from the 1940s through the first years of independence. Drawing on transcripts from African courts, it demonstrates that Gusii court elders were quite sympathetic to women who lodged rape claims. Elders handed down stiff punishments to rapists, were willing to entertain a wide definition of “indecent assault,” and did not require the extensive evidence of rape so commonly demanded by judges in Western courts (and in British courts in Kenya). Perhaps most surprisingly, men who admitted to having had sex but claimed it had been consensual were forced to prove their claims. This article advances both the historical study of rape in Africa and suggests that we reassess—or at least reserve judgment—on the nature of sexual violence in the non—West.

Abstract:
This reserarch is part of the thesis conducted by I Gusti Ayu Putri Devy Rosiana. This study was conducted to obtain an overview of the effect of individual counseling to improve self-efficacy belief in second trimester primigravid pregnant women at “X” clinic in Bandung city in order to decrease anxiety related to delivery. According to Beck et al (1985, 2005) high anxiety is due to low assessment of individual coping ability in overcoming a threatening situation. According to Bandura (2002) the degree of self-efficacy belief can be enhanced through its sources. Therefore, to improve self-efficacy belief will be done through the acquisition of new understanding of self-efficacy sources. The sample involves 2 primigravid pregnant women in second trimester. The results is individual counseling can improve the degree of self-efficacy belief and decrease anxiety related to delivery. Practical advice is, counselors can provide individual counseling to improve self-efficacy belief in facing delivery for primigravid pregnant women.

Abstract:
Abstract Street vendors (PKL) are included in the activities of the informal sector. Street vendors have the characteristic of buying and selling goods on the roadside or sidewalks. The presence of street vendors in the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Corridor is due to the low number of job opportunities, resulting in competition in finding work. Through this phenomenon, this study aims to study the activities of street vendors in the use of space. This research uses the Univariate (Proportion) analysis method. The results of the research related to the characteristics of street vendors in the corridor were 53% with >15-30 years, dominated by women; high school education level; 87% came from Palu City; 26% trading experience > 5 years and type of family-owned business and 36% income > 500,000-1 million. The activity of street vendors in this corridor is 60% dominated by consumer goods with a linear distribution pattern; 56% Static trading facility type; 50% of trading facilities in the form of containers/kiosks and semi-static service characteristics; 88% of street vendors occupy trading locations on the street and 52% on average 5-8 hours of trading time. The main factor in choosing a street vendor business location is close to consumers.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Gingivectomy Using Scalpel and Electrocautery in Gingival Enlargement Treatment of Puberty Female. Puberty Gingivitis is a gum inflamation due to certain conditions that are classified by etiologic factors and pathological changes. The increase in gingival size is a sign of gingival disorder. Gingivectomy is cutting the gingival tissue by removing the lateral wall of the pocket which aims to eliminate pockets and gingival inflammation thus obtaining physiologically, functionally and aesthetically good gingiva. In this case, 16-year old woman complained of the state of the upper and lower gums which were swollen since the last one year, easily bleeding and no pain. The handling of this case was designed to use the technique of gingivecto by using periodontal knives and gingivoplasty by gradually using electrocautery. Gingivectomy technique with a combination of scalpel and electrocautery in puberty gingivitis treatment gives satisfactory results in aesthetic and functional state in patients.

Onsongo, Francis Omweri. "Fertility decline among Abagusii women : the application of an adapted proximate determinants model." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1019924.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary objective of this thesis is to account for the fertility decline among Abagusii women in South-western Kenya. The motivation behind the study was based on the fact that the fertility trends associated with this group of people had not been studied before. This is surprising because the Abagusii recorded one of the world's highest total fertility rates of 10.4 in 1979 (Omosa 1994; Osiemo 1986; Oucho 1990), but has also experienced significant fertility decline. The total fertility rate in 2004 stood at 4.7, (Anyara 2009). The analytical framework that is adopted is Stover's (1998) adaptation of the Bongaarts et. al. (1984) Proximate Determinants Model. These determinants such as contraceptive use, post-partum insusceptibility, sexual activity, abortion and sterility represent behavioural and biological variables that affect fertility directly. The manner in which they are employed involves using the index which indicates the extent to which each proximate determinant reduces the fertility of the group in question.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the roles of women of faith in peacebuilding in the conflict between the Gusii and Maasai of South-western Kenya. While religion has at times legitimated women’s exclusion and predominantly created male religious elite figures in peacebuilding, I demonstrate how women of faith deploy religious resources for peace. Acting within complex unequal gendered socio-cultural conditions and positions, the women of faith deploy religious faith as an identity, motivation, and legitimating moral authority and voice in peacebuilding. Gendered barriers hinder them from finding status and a place in formal peacebuilding mechanisms alongside males, but still the women of faith struggle and develop an attitude and disposition of moral influence, and faith power that facilitates them to act as agents in peacebuilding. The women of faith deploy religious resources in mourning and burial rituals of healing and reconciliation, in everyday spiritual practices of sharing lives, and through services that provide security and protection especially for children, the elderly, the injured and the infirm. Religion enables women to establish protective infrastructure through women of faith networks and organizations that provide services to the community, mobilize human capital, and conduct outreach and community engagement. I show that even as the women of faith deploy these religious resources for peacebuilding, they recognize the gendered barriers they are faced with and the public peacebuilding mechanisms that they are excluded from. Deployment of religious resources for peacebuilding intersects with gender identities and relations, and in some instances religious faith transcends established gender norms and gendered barriers or even removes them.

Obwoge, Beatrice Kemunto Charity. "A lexico-semantic analysis of EkeGusii circumcision social varieties." Diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/14485.

Full text
Abstract:
The study is based on the lexical choices in the social context of EkeGusii circumcision and the meaning of the various lexical items used in the social context of circumcision and gender differentiation in the choice of the lexicon of EkeGusii circumcision. This special variety is also used within EkeGusii standard variety but when used in the context of circumcision, the meaning of the lexical items is understood based on context. It is believed that language embodies traditional values and that these values are socially conditioned. This study considers the social conditioning of the circumcision social varieties. Linguistic traditional values of EkeGusii language are reflected in, among others, gender differentiation in the choice of the lexicon in the social context of circumcision. The study was based on two theories; the social theory and contrastive lexico-semantic theory. Social theory was useful in analyzing language in society and what language means to its users while contrastive lexico-semantic theory was useful in analyzing EkeGusii culture-specific meaning which does not translate readily to English. Participatory observation, interview schedules, informers, questionnaires and introspection were used to collect data. Data was analyzed qualitatively in view of the choice of the lexicon within language variation. Findings showed that the sound plays an important role in postulating meaning of EkeGusii Circumcision Social Varieties (ECSV) through vowel lengthening. The lexicon of ECSV comprises nouns and verbs and that this lexicon is a style as well as register of EkeGusii. Gender differentiation in the language is a case of socialization rather than biological. Finally, meaning relations established by the lexicon of ECSV include synonymy, hyponymy, polysemy as well as antonymy. It is recommended in this study that teachers should be trained on Sociolinguistics, carry out classroom research to identify the learners’ sociolinguistic culture and integrate an individual learner with others in the same level especially since the school has taken the role of socialization of an individual.
