Abstract:
The two papers in this thesis are aimed at solving problems in Integrated Pest Management project, practice, and program evaluations. In the first paper, an evaluation design is constructed for the Onion ipmPIPE website, an onion pest information website. The Bayesian decision theoretic approach may not accurately model onion growers' pest management decisions throughout the season. Randomization of the treatment is possible, but an incomplete grower list proved to be a problem. The analysis shows that an instrumental variables approach may be the most appropriate method for estimating the imp

Entrepreneurial activity can promote economic development on a national level. Women are the most underdeveloped workforce globally. The amount of entrepreneurs is higher in developing countries, where lack of equality, education and resources most detain them from engaging economically. It is crucial to understand what motivates these entrepreneurs, more specifically women entrepreneurs, since they are so important for the development. Few studies have been done about women entrepreneurs’ motivation compared to those done about men and even more scarce are the studies done in developing count

Abstract:
Costs and benefits associated with erosion reduction and adoption of soil conservation practices for a representative farm in a watershed in Honduras are examined in a linear programming framework. Special attention is paid to income-soil loss tradeoffs, income-risk tradeoffs, and on the effect of different farmers' planning horizons on net farm income. A representative farm model for the area was constructed to achieve the objectives of the study. Twelve farmers in the region were surveyed, crop budgets were prepared, and soil loss values were calculated to provide the information required

This dissertation documents a Garifuna community in transition as it seeks to attain international protection as an indigenous community. The Garifuna, an Afro-Indigenous group, have farmed and fished along the Caribbean Coast of Honduras for more than two hundred years, and they are attempting to protect access to natural resources that have been privatized and limited by development programs. Local Garifuna activists have mobilized community members to safeguard local resources by ensuring that community-held land titles are honored and that the community is preserved as culturally Garifuna.
