This study is essentially a descriptive account of the images of women labeled as prostitutes in the newspapers of Muncie, Indiana, at the turn of the century. In addition, attention was also given to how women as a group were presented. It was suspected that there would be a correlation between the images of women stigmatized by arrest and the images of those other women whose status or behavior was thought to merit inclusion in the newspapers.This paper includes: 1. a brief overview of the social, economic and political dynamics of the town in 1895, 1905 and 1914, 2. a section on images of the prostitute as portrayed by the newspapers during these years as well as an attempt to evaluate the actual, as opposed to symbolic, position of women identified as prostitutes and 3. a review of the activities and images of other women as presented in newspaper accounts.The main findings are: 1. In 1895, prostitutes were presented as stigmatized but integral members of the community who were routinely regulated by law enforcers while women as a group were newsworthy primarily when involved with the legal system in cases involving, marriage, divorce and suicide. 2. In 1905, the prostitute had become a symbol of individual and communal decay while women in general were portrayed within the context of romantic love whereby passion led to elopements, divorce, suicide and interpersonal violence. 3. By 1915, the image of women labeled as prostitutes had shifted again to that of a youthful victim of socioeconomic processes. This new image was linked with the much publicized ascendancy of middle-class women into the public sphere as professionals, club members and active reformers in the town. 4. Women labeled as prostitutes suffered a loss of status and legal protection between 1895and 1915 while women actively involved in public life experienced increased visibility and affirmation in the newspapers.

Muslim women are misrepresented through frames and stereotypes that the media uses to further an established narrative. Through a Critical Discourse Analysis, the study analyzes three liberal-nonpartisan Italian newspapers and their approach towards two themes, which are the burkini debate that occurred in late August 2016 and the analysis of three different Muslim women within the Italian society. The study concludes that Muslim women are negatively framed through the usage of a discourse that stereotypes them and constructively misrepresents their reality.

quo, have historically received little attention from the press. This thesis discusses how women were described in three of Oregon's frontier newspapers from 1846 to 1859, and also explores their contributions to the newspapers as writers, poets, editors, and
businesswomen. Information from established American media clipped for the frontier
papers described popular, mainstream ideas of womanhood, as well as provided news on
the emerging women's rights struggle. Information generated locally on women
encompassed a variety of themes, including marriage, education, and temperance. This
study shows that even though content about women and women's roles as contributors
were constrained by contemporary ideas of propriety and women's place in society,

This thesis analysed the representation of women as voters, politicians and relatives of politicians in the newspaper coverage of every elections from 1918 until 2010; in order to offer historical context to the existing literature about women, media and politics. Content analysis and feminist critical discourse analysis were employed to track the changes and continuities in their mediated representations across the twenty five elections studied. The study shows that across time, the representation of voters changed the least. Voters tended to be constructed as mothers and thrifty housewives whose political views stemmed from their familial roles and domestic responsibilities. The extent to which they were depicted as politically engaged and were quoted did increase over time however they continued to be predominantly written about rather than allowed to speak for themselves. Contrary to the results of previous studies, politicians were not associated with stereotypically feminine policy areas, but were instead gendered through their construction as important representatives for women voters and their campaign styles. Over time the proportion of items offering negative evaluations increased. The proportion which made personalised references to their appearance or age, and included their voices peaked during the 1960s and 1970s and then declined so that contemporary politicians are as likely to experience both as their interwar forebears. The results from 2010 however suggested that personalisation may once again be increasing. The role of relatives in electoral coverage changed the most of the three groups. During the interwar years they were depicted as active political campaigners whose contribution was largely welcomed, after war their role became more focused on their personal lives. The coverage also became increasingly focused on the wives of party leaders. By the late 1980s, leaders wives were once again constructed taking an active role in the campaign but these interventions were portrayed as illegitimate and threatening to democracy. The coverage of relatives became increasingly personalised over time focusing on their appearance and its appeal to the electorate. The newspaper coverage of women in electoral campaigns has always been, and continues to be gendered in specific ways. Women have consistently had their level of political activity trivialised and their voices marginalised. They were domesticated through the construction of their political priorities and campaign styles and they received personalised coverage which was undeniably gendered. In effect women were routinely linked to the private sphere, rendering their political participation in the public domain problematic.

This thesis discusses the reactions of American newspapers and elite individuals to French women in violence as perpetrators and victims during the French Revolution. Canvassing the years between 1789 and 1799, it includes papers, especially politically aligned ones, from across the states of America and attempts to assess the prescriptive nature of various reports. In includes case studies of common/working-class women, aristocratic revolutionaries (Charlotte Corday and Madame Roland), and Queen Marie Antoinette. Using newspapers with and without political affiliations, to either the Federalist or Democratic-Republican Party, it argues that the dividing ideological lines between these factions were not as steadfast and rigid as previously believed during this period. Though papers and individuals did adhere to party lines, their opinions toward women in violence were affected by other factors, such as their ideologies about violence. Building on historiographies of colonial and revolutionary American attitudes toward women in violence, gender ideology in the early Republic, and political parties in the 1790s, it seeks to illuminate American views toward women in violence during the years of the early Republic.<br>Master of Arts

This study examines U.S. newspaper representation of Muslim-Arab women post 9/11 with an aim of better understanding how women are portrayed in relation to religion, society, politics and the economy. Through a discourse analysis, I examined local articles from across the nation, in addition to international articles, that examine various aspects of Muslim-Arab women’s lives between 9/11/2001 and 9/11/2005. With the increasing focus on the Muslim world in general, and Muslim women in particular, it is necessary to determine how women are portrayed. Muslim-Arab women have increasingly been on the face covers of magazines and front pages of newspapers since 9/11 and all the events that followed; among the major topics covered were the war in Afghanistan, the U.S.-led Iraqi invasion, as well as the elections in both countries. This project aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the diverse stereotypes used by Western reporters to describe Muslim-Arab women, their appearance, status, roles, obligations,responsibilities and aspirations. The analysis also examines the journalistic practices that contribute to distortion and stereotyping.

Previous research on framing has proved its strong effects on the social perception and political preferences of individuals. Therefore, the aim of this research is to explore how Saudi women's issues have been framed in a sample of United States and Saudi newspapers. Saudi Vision 2030 is the post-oil plan for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that was announced on April 25, 2016. The sample of this thesis was 300 news stories from eight newspapers. The U.S. newspapers were the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times. The Saudi newspapers were Al Riyadh, Okaz, Al Jazirah, and Al Watan. This thesis explores how these issues have been covered before and after Saudi Vision 2030 by answering five basic questions.
Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to analyze the news stories. For the quantitative analysis, five pre-defined generic frames from Semetko and Valkenburg were adopted: conflict frame, human interest frame, morality frame, economic consequences frame, and responsibility frame. An inductive approach to find the new frames was used for the qualitative analysis. Moreover, this thesis looked at how U.S. and Saudi newspapers have visually framed Saudi women through an analysis of the types of images used in the news stories related to Saudi women's issues. The main finding suggests that within the used frames in the newspapers, the U.S. newspapers focused more on the human-interest frame, while the Saudi newspapers mostly used the economic frame. Furthermore, the types of issues covered are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to determine how the tone and roles of women serving in the Iraq War were portrayed in newspaper articles. Issues of how women in the military were portrayed in terms of page and story prominence were also of importance.
A content analysis was conducted in order to determine the tone, roles, story, and page placement of newspaper articles published in the United States and the United Kingdom over a 7-year time period. Newspaper articles related to the topic were retrieved from the LexisNexis database and analyzed.
The results showed that mentions of military women during the Iraq War in United Kingdom newspapers were almost twice as negative as those in United States newspapers (28.4% vs. 15.5%). Story placement of women in the military was more prominent in United States newspapers than United Kingdom newspapers. Mentions of women in news articles were 14.8 percentage points more positive than those in editorials. The tone of women serving in the military during the Iraq War was most polarized at the beginning of the war and became increasingly neutral as the war progressed.

The impact of a female sportswriter's presence on a newspaper staff was examined by content analysis, studying photo and copy space devoted to both male and female sports coverage. Composite weeks, one each from each quarter of the year following the woman's date of hire were selected from the only four newspapers in the state of Indiana hiring female sportswriters. Compared to similar Indiana newspapers without female sportswriters, those with female staffers were found to devote more copy and photo space to women's coverage in the entire sports section, and on the sports section front page, papers with female sportswriters used more photos of women and devoted more total space (photos and copy) to women's sports coverage. The effect was consistent regardless of the newspaper's market size.<br>Department of Journalism

There is a problem with attitudes that blame the victim of sexual assault: these attitudes are widespread and show popular adhesion to assumptions about rape that have been criticized and combatted by feminists. These assumptions are known as “rape myths.” It is important to look at the role newspapers play in contemporary discourse around rape and the extent to which they reproduce rape myths or, alternatively, incorporate a feminist critique. This research examines how sexual assault is constructed in three English-language newspapers, The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, and The National Post in the year 2012. Using qualitative content analysis, themes of rape myths and the presence of feminist discourse are categorized. The power of language when describing rape in the media is recognized and a description of rape-supportive culture, within a feminist theoretical framework, is provided. The ultimate aim of this research is to identify and challenge myths and stereotypes surrounding rape as well as identify possible feminist discourse on rape in print news media in Canada.

Previous issue date: 2009<br>Este estudo analisa os discursos publicados no Diário da Bahia sobre o feminismo entre os anos de 1931 a 1937. Detém-se na análise das manifestações feministas identificadas na época através da imprensa e nas condições que possibilitaram produzir determinados discursos sobre essas manifestações no Diário da Bahia. Busca-se, relacionar o contexto político de produção desses discursos com os jogos de interesses que moviam certos grupos na direção do jornal, para, assim, problematizar os motivos pelos quais era dado, ora maior, ora menor visibilidade a determinadas vertentes feministas. Ao acompanhar diariamente o periódico nestes seis anos, foram identificados três tipos de feminismo discursados: o primeiro, ligado à Federação Bahiana pelo Progresso Feminino, filial estadual de matriz localizada no Distrito Federal, de onde eram enviadas as diretrizes de luta em prol da conquista dos direitos femininos; o segundo, configurava-se a partir dos artigos assinados por uma correspondente feminista de São Paulo, através dos quais ela registrava suas impressões sobre como deveria ser a mulher feminista moderna. Por fim, o terceiro, vinculado a uma corrente de pensamento mais de esquerda, representado pela tentativa de instalação na Bahia da União Feminina do Brasil, um núcleo feminino da Aliança Nacional Libertadora, que pretendia divulgar ideais feministas diferentes daquele pregado pela vertente “mais comportada” do feminismo, ligada à Federação Brasileira. The problem of violence against women in Serbia is connected with the position that women hold inside of the discourse of family and society in general. Also, the general atmosphere in media implies the lack of media freedom, specific structural organization, and ownership relations in media companies. From this starting point, this paper investigates how different newspapers in Serbia are reporting about violence against women. This study outlines the most common topics and social actors that are represented inside of the articles. The analysis is divided in two parts. A content analysis of the five different newspapers in Serbia (Kurir, Blic, Vecernje Novosti, Politika and Danas) and critical discourse analysis of the most relevant articles inside of those. Part of the study is devoted to identify how these articles are most commonly framed among the chosen newspapers. Another part of the study looks at the comparison of the newspapers, with special emphasis on the social actors and the way they are represented among the articles. Results showed that newspapers report on violence against women differently when it comes to the category of frame. Most commonly used frame among overall sample is human interest frame which implies reports connected to the individual cases of violence against women that often generate feelings of outrage, empathy, caring, sympathy, or compassion. The background of the cases is almost in all of the articles used to portray the human-interest perspective. The reports are somewhat similar when it comes to the way how social actors are represented in the articles. For example, in the analyzed articles it is most often that the victims are presented as passive agents. The discourse of guilt around the social actors is often shared between the perpetrator and the victim. According to the latest statistics, eight women were killed during the first 58 days of 2018. Thus, practical implication of this study is to potentially point out more and less effective ways for Serbian news media to approach this serious social issue in the future.

Language is affected by the society in which it is used. Men and women have not had the same status in society, which means that the language used about them may potentially be different. A domain in society that was created for men is sports, yet, nowadays women also feature in sports. The aim of this study is to explore how women and their performances in sports are represented in newspapers. Previous research in the field of language, gender and sports has found that women are not depicted in the same way as men (Lundquist Wanneberg, 2011; Bissel, 2006; Segrave, McDowell and King III, 2006). To study how women are represented in sports articles, six articles about female athletes were analyzed through Critical Discourse Analysis. The analysis was based on Fairclough and Wodak’s (2010) framework that focuses on the domains of representation, relations and identities. These domains were divided into five categories: terms used to refer to the athletes, attributes, performance, sport descriptions and emotions. This allowed an analysis which showed how the world of sports views women, how women are represented as athletes, and the relation between the athletes and their sports. The analysis showed that women are depicted as ‘female’ athletes, not just athletes. This could be found through the usage of, for example, the noun and possessive marker women’s, which is used as a premodifier to describe the sports throughout the texts. It was also found that the world of sports is normally one where men are active and therefore it had to be explained when women were excellent at their sport, even when compared to men. This could be found through the usage of explanatory language, which clearly stated that the female athletes in question are or can be better than men.

During the so-called ‘migration crisis’ of 2015, 51,338 Syrians applied for asylum in Sweden. First, Swedish politicians called for Swedes to ‘open their hearts’, public support was strong, and media coverage was full of possibilities and humanizing images. As the crisis developed, Sweden’s generous asylum legislation switched to the EU minimum, the political climate toughened and media’s positive frames soon shifted to discussing negative consequences. This degree project focuses on those least visible in the media’s representation of the migration crisis – refugee women. By using Chouliaraki and Zaborowski’s (2017) model ‘voice by narrative’, it answers the research question; How are refugee women from Syria represented in national and local Swedish newspapers?, as well as the following sub-questions: What news frames are used in texts where Syrian women are featured? In what ways are refugee women given visibility and space to speak? What types of representations, wording, and stereotypes are used? What differences can be found between 2015 and 2020, national and local newspapers? The project examines news frames, gendered representations, typical stereotypes, visibility, and space given to Syrian women in Swedish newspapers. It does so by content analysis of newspaper articles from three newspapers published in 2015 and 2020. The project uses theories of othering, intersectionality, and post-colonial power structures as well as literature on representations in European media during the migration crisis to understand representations, voice, and news frames in Swedish newspapers. The results indicated that refugee women are often silenced and spoken of instead of given space to speak. The most commonly used news frames among the analyzed texts were negative geopolitical and women were often decontextualized. Victimization and normalization were the most commonly used stereotypes assigned to refugee women. The majority of representations of refugee women were collective and the women were in many ways othered. Refugee women are othered, decontextualized, silenced, and collectivized, which will have its consequences as they are methods that limit refugee women’s status and position in society – maintaining their position as ‘others’ in Swedish society.

Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines how positively or negatively as well as how subjectively or objectively the South African tabloid newspapers represent black celebrities. This examination was primarily conducted by using the content analysis research technique. The researcher selected a total of 85 newspapers spread across four different South African daily and weekend tabloid newspapers that were published during the period February to September 2008. The results from the data collected reveal that tabloid newspapers tend to overemphasize negativity when reporting about black celebrities. The findings also reveal a clear differential in the representation of black female celebrities vis-à-vis male celebrities. Unlike male celebrities whose roles were mainly defined in terms of political activities and personal disputes, female celebrities’ roles were largely confined to relationships and sex. The language used by the four newspapers in their representation of celebrities appears to be humiliating and, in some instances, downright disparaging. There is little doubt that media representations of celebrities, whether positive or negative, serve as mirrors to how some members of society behave. To this end, there needs to be a shift from the current preoccupation with sensationalizing negative news when South African tabloid newspapers report on black celebrities. Tabloid newspapers should judiciously use their greater focus on celebrities’ private lives to report on more positive personal stories that focus on the achievements of celebrities, including how some celebrities are living positively with HIV/AIDS. Since this study only focused on South African tabloid newspapers’ representations of black celebrities, and only employed the content analysis method, further research is recommended on the impact of celebrities’ representations on the South African society.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie ondersoek hoe positief of negatief, asmede subjektief of objektief, daar oor swart beroemdes in Suid-Afrikaanse ponie- of skinderkoerante verslag gedoen word. Die ondersoek is primêr met behulp van die inhoudsanaliseondersoekmetode uitgevoer. Die navorser het 85 koerante uit vier verskillende Suid-Afrikaanse dagblaaie en naweekponiekoerante gekies uit die tydperk Februarie tot September 2008. Die resultate toon ‘n tendens in die poniekoerante dat oorwegend negatiewe verslagdoening oor swart beroemdes vooropgestel word. Die bevindinge toon ook ’n duidelike verskil tussen die verslagdoening oor beroemde swart vroue teenoor dié oor swart mans. In teenstelling met die mans wie se rolle hoofsaaklik ingevolge hulle politieke aktiwiteite en persoonlike dispute gedefinieer word, word beroemde swart vroue se rolle hoofsaaklik beperk tot verhoudings en seks. Die taalgebruik in die verslaggewing oor beroemdes in die vier poniekoerante blyk uiters vernederend, en in sommige gevalle, selfs degraderend en wrang te wees. Daar bestaan min twyfel dat verslaggewing oor beroemdes in die media, hetsy positief of negatief, weerspieël hoe sommige lede van die samelewing lewe. Om hierdie rede is ’n verskuiwing in die huidige beheptheid met die sensasionalisering van negatiewe nuus in die verslaggewing oor swart beroemdes nodig. Poniekoerante wat op die persoonlike lewens van beroemdes fokus behoort na meer positiewe verslagdoening oor hul prestasies te strewe, insluitend, hoe sommige beroemdes positief met MIV/Vigs lewe. Aangesien hierdie navorsing net op verslagdoening oor swart beroemdes in Suid-Afrikaanse poniekoerante kragtens die inhoudsanalisemetorde gefokus het, word verdere navorsing aanbeveel oor die impak van verslagdoening oor beroemdes op die Suid-Afrikaanse samelewing.

Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research study presents an empirical quantitative research aimed primarily at establishing whether there is a need for a weekly professional and business women's newspaper. Due to the scope and costs of doing a national research, this research was narrowed to the Western Cape's Cape metropolitan region. This research is therefore a pilot study which is to provide foundations for a representative research project.
A structured questionnaire-based survey was designed and used to gather data that would answer the research question. This survey was distributed amongst 200 professional women, business women and women aspiring to these positions and who are currently reading newspapers within the Cape Metropole. The questionnaire was divided into three sections. The first section was the screening section which was to ensure that all respondents are within the target group. This was followed by the demographic section which was to establish the backgrounds of respondents and the newspaper readership patterns section which aimed to understand women's readership patterns and also to answer the research questions.
Findings from the survey revealed that there is a potential market for a weekly professional and business women's newspaper, as 82 percent of the 200 respondents indicated that they would be willing to buy a newspaper targeted at women. Results also revealed that these women mainly read newspapers on a Sunday. In addition the majority (65%) of the respondents indicated that they would prefer a women's newspaper to be a weekly publication. This implies that a weekly professional and business women's newspaper is a potentially viable business proposition.
Although the results and literature supports the view that professional and business women are a growing market and that they are generally not satisfied with the current newspaper offerings in the market, this research is a pilot research study and should be followed by a larger scale research project to investigate this topic and better understand the needs of women. Moreover, future studies will establish more precisely the size of this market and establish whether it makes business sense to pursue this proposition.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie navorsingstudie verteenwoordig 'n empiriese kwantitatiewe navorsingstuk primêr daarop gerig om te bepaal of daar 'n behoefte bestaan vir 'n weeklikse koerant vir professionele en sakevroue. As gevolg van die omvang en koste van 'n nasionale navorsingstudie, is hierdie navorsing net gerig op die Wes-Kaapse Kaapstadse metropolitaanse streek. Hierdie navorsing is daarom 'n proefstudie wat die grondslag bied vir 'n meer verteenwoordigende navorsingsprojek.
'n Gestruktureerde vraelys-gebaseerde opname is ontwerp en gebruik om data in te samel wat die navorsingsvraag sou beantwoord. The study seeks to interrogate the gender constructions in the Daily Sun’s “Charter for a Man” campaign which ran from 7 November to 7 December 2007. It coincided with the 16 Days of Activism against gender violence and was designed to lobby support for this campaign and discourage men from physically abusing women. The “Charter for a Man” listed nine principles that signatories were to abide by. It included a section to be signed by men to be submitted to and collected by the Daily Sun. The campaign was constructed as an intervention into the issue of gender violence. Consequently, the 30 news stories, four editorial pieces and 11 letters to the editor that were published during the campaign period make up the textual data analysed in the study. The news stories consisted of testimonies from abused women and some women abusers. In addition, celebrity signatories were selected to endorse the campaign and encourage other men to follow suit. In the editorials, the campaign was consistently flagged as a nation building initiative which all men were supposed to support. The letters to the editor consisted of readers who either supported or rejected the campaign. The study takes place against the context of a patriarchal society characterised by high levels of violence. Given this scenario, the study is informed by a concern with gender justice and therefore considers whether such a campaign, ostensibly aimed at eradicating gender violence, has the potential of being transformative of gender inequalities. The study set out to establish the kinds of masculinities and femininities that were variously constituted in the campaign as well as the gender discourses that were privileged. It is informed by the theories of feminist poststructuralism and Foucault’s conceptualisation of discourse. As the campaign is the initiative of a tabloid newspaper, it is also considered within the framework of newspaper campaigns and arguments about tabloids and the public sphere. As text based research, the study employs critical discourse analysis as a qualitative procedure of textual analysis. It makes use of an eclectic approach to textual analysis that draws on linguistics, narrative and argumentation. The texts are analysed according to the categories of news texts contained which includes the Charter itself, signatory articles, testimonies, vox pops and letters to the editor. The overarching theme of nationhood projected in the editorials and other categories is also discussed as part of the analysis. The study concludes that the Daily Sun campaign might be a seemingly progressive action at first glance. However, it does not challenge the existing gender order but rather maintains and sustains patriarchal attitudes through the repeated representation of women as weak and in need of patronage and men as their protectors and providers. In some instances, women are constructed primarily as sexual beings as their physical attributes are emphasised, while men are constructed as working class citizens and rational beings. The study therefore proposes that the Daily Sun fails as an alternative public sphere that might make visible the concerns of women as a marginalised group in society. The campaign, it is argued, is self-serving in its promotion of the Daily Sun’s image as the “People’s Paper” rather than serious concerns about gender violence.

The women’s liberation movement in the 1970s and 1980s utilized various means for activism and demonstrations, but women also used the judicial system to fight for equality in the workplace. This study focuses specifically on the field of journalism and how female reporters used the courts to fight the gender discrimination that was widespread and unbridled before the creation of legislation that outlawed it. The lawsuit filed by Mary Lou Butcher and approximately 90 other women against The Detroit News is one such case that exemplifies the process of filing a gender discrimination lawsuit, as well as the events that led to the suits and the impact that it and similar lawsuits had on the field of journalism and the women’s
liberation movement as a whole. Using textual analysis to examine the coverage of these lawsuits by industry literature and by the publications challenged by the lawsuits demonstrates what the field of newspapers and magazines was like during the time of the cases. Comparing the same media during the times of the lawsuits and post-settlement

In a first part, we will see how N.O.W got familiar with the journalism’s tools in order to be in the newspapers and to spread their claims. In a second part, the question at stake will be to know how the main feminist events of the 1970s were covered by the press, and think of the impact of this coverage on public opinion and on the organization’s image. The last part will deal with the way N.O.W influenced the press, both directly, by setting up actions in order to improve the image of women and feminists, by increasing the number of executive women in newspapers and magazines; then indirectly, thanks to N.O.W’s existence and visibility which had an impact on women as a whole and on feminist organizations more specifically. This study investigates the impact of the Times of Zambia gender policy on journalistic practices. The policy was formulated to address issues of representation of women both in news coverage and at an institutional level. In spite of the implementation of the editorial gender policy, no change in gendered representation is evident. As a media practitioner and a Zambian woman concerned with social justice, I set out to investigate the impact of this policy on journalistic practices. The study is informed by a Cultural Studies approach to media studies, specifically drawing on the 'circuit of culture' (du Guy et ai, 1997) and focused on two specific 'moments', namely representation and production. Data was collected using two qualitative methods, namely document analysis and semi-structured in-depth interviews. The document analysis established that this policy is informed by a liberal feminist approach to media and identified the weaknesses in its formulation. The subsequent semi-structured in-depth interviews probed the practices and perceptions of male and female journalists and editors in relation to the degree of change in gendered representation in the news. This study finds that the editorial gender policy at the Times of Zambia has not had any significant impact on the journalistic practices and it probed the reason for this lack of effectiveness. It argues that this can be partially attributed to the orientation of the policy within a liberal feminist paradigm which neglects the internal and external factors that influence the representation of women and men in news production. Further, this position ignores the societal structures and power relations which impact, albeit unintentional, on the treatment of news. Inter-organisational factors such as profit maximisation, political interference, the use of news values and news beats are identified as leading to the exclusion of representations of women in hard news. At an intra-organisational level, lack of importance attached to the policy by senior staff and their attitudes to news production in general have meant that the policy was not enacted or ensured in any meaningful way. A partir do interesse em comum de reforma social e afirmação da maternidade como papel social da mulher, destacamos e analisamos pontos de convergência e divergência entre o discurso católico e o discurso médico-científico. No quadro da produção de novas representações de comportamento moral e social da mulher, destacamos o processo de construção do duplo significado da maternidade, ora privilegiada a partir da dimensão de sua função religioso-moral por parte dos padres, ora tratada como função higiênico-social por parte dos médicos, porém compreendida por ambos como função moral e social da mulher .

<p>The purpose of this BA-thesis is to identify the patterns in the HIV/AIDS communication in four Namibian newspapers and examine the causes to why it is portrayed in that manner. The newspapers, <em>The Namibian</em>, <em>New Era</em>, <em>Windhoek Observer</em> and <em>Informanté</em>, vary in ownership, funding and style; from government loyal to tabloid and the journalists themselves have different backgrounds. A combination of quantitative content analysis of issues from September and October 2009, and interviews have been used. Main theories are Thomas Tuftes version of the <em>Model for Communication</em> <em>on HIV/AIDS</em>, Denis McQuails interpretation of framing and the media’s informative role and finally Silvio Waisboards <em>Strategic communication</em>. The results found are that articles on HIV and AIDS are common in the daily range of news but that HIV/AIDS is generally not the main subject in the text. According to the journalists the reason for this is that by isolating the subject it can enhance the risk of stigmatizing the people with HIV/AIDS. None of the newspapers have a policy on how to address HIV and AIDS, <em>New Era</em> is, however, in the progress of implementing one. All newspapers have had discussions on how to report on HIV/AIDS. The most common way to report about HIV and AIDS is to write about the spread of the disease and the people affected by it. Even though they appear frequently they do not get their own voice in the texts. Instead official representatives and civil society are the most common sources. The reason for this is not only lack of resources but also, as one journalist points out, an unwillingness from the reporters side due to the sensitivity of the subject. Some of the journalists stress the importance of writing to change individual behavior but none of the journalists mention that they include the structural causes behind the disease in their reporting. Reader fatigue is mentioned as a cause for the seemingly decreasing trend of coverage on HIV/AIDS. Some of the journalists say that their own personal opinions and experiences on HIV/AIDS affect their writing. They believe that committed reporting is not in conflict with the journalistic convention of impartialness. All the reporters have a journalistic aim of creating social change in the Republic of Namibia and they believe that the media has the power to do that. </p>

Nous nous intéressons à la représentation de l’expérience coloniale de ces femmes ayant quitté le Royaume-Uni pour l’Australie ainsi qu’à la manière dont leurs récits, majoritairement publiés dans des journaux, agirent sur le statut des femmes dans la société coloniale. Plus spécifiquement, nous étudions leur expérience en tant qu’écrivaines, c’est-à-dire le contexte de production et de réception de leurs récits, ainsi que leur représentation de la différence culturelle et de la différence de genre. Le corpus étudié contient des textes issus des archives littéraires australiennes, notamment des romans-feuilletons, nouvelles et articles de journalisme publiés dans des journaux de l’époque coloniale comme The Australian Journal, The Age et The Australasian. It focuses on how these women, who left the United Kingdom to settle in Australia, represent their colonial experience, as well as on the influence of their narratives, mostly published in newspapers, on women’s status in the colonial society. More precisely, it is a study of their experience as women writers, a study that includes the context of production and reception of their work as well as their respective representations of cultural and gender difference in the Australian colonies. This analysis includes texts previously buried in the Australian literary archives, such as serial novels, short stories and press articles published in colonial newspapers such as The Australian Journal, The Age, and The Australasian. By inscribing these texts in their historical context, this thesis reveals their importance in the social context of their time and reconsiders the literary choices of these writers, long decried by the dominant nationalist and masculinist vision of Australian literary history and criticism. This thesis thus has two main objectives: developing our knowledge of the Australian colonial experience by taking into account little known or unknown narratives, and studying the poetics of Ada Cambridge’s and Mary Fortune’s narratives in the light of their production context in order to reassess these texts as well as their place in Australian literary history

By the beginning of the 1990s, Saudi Arabia began to be presented as economically important globally. On November 6, 1990, in a historic first, a group of Saudi women protested against the prohibition against women driving. Very few previous studies have examined Saudi Arabia’s image in the British press concerning the treatment of Saudi women. However, in 2005, King Abdullah began supporting efforts by women to win their rights, and the Western media started following the social movement in Saudi Arabia. The aim of this study is to trace the representation of Saudi women in the British newspaper and investigate how the British press represents coverage of stories relating to Saudi women, using a conceptual framework which draws on Entman’s model of framing, and concepts from Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) and Rana Kabanni’s Imperial Fictions: Europe’s Myths of Orient (2008). Coverage from four British newspapers, The Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Guardian and Independent, during the period 2005-2013, was used to explore two case studies: the protests by Saudi women concerning the ban on female drivers and the representation of Saudi women at the London Olympics in 2012. A mixed method approach combining content analysis, and framing analysis was used to examine both written text and photographs with captions from the sample. More specifically, the thesis investigated how the prevalence of five news frames: conflict, human interest, morality, economy and attribution of responsibility coexist and support each other in the news media and what the differences are between newspapers in terms of frame choice. Findings of the study indicate the following: (a) That the representation of Saudi women in British news media is negative compared with the depiction of Western women in the absence of understanding in the journalism realm concerning the cultural differences between societies; (b) the analysis of the two case studies revealed two dominating frames which are conflict and human interest; (c) The analysis of the photographs used in both case studies revealed that journalists often use photographs unrelated to the actual content of the news stories; (d) the representations of Saudi women in the newspaper sample reflect the same negative portrayal that is seen of the Muslim women elsewhere in the Western media which is rooted in the Western ideology of Orientalism. Links were also found between the cultural frames of Orientalism and journalistic culture in building a news agenda. Thus, this thesis presents finding concerning the important role played by the various frames used by British newspapers and the significant difference in how news is covered by selecting the source and analysing the frames.

Genom användning av diskursanalys ämnar denna studie besvara följande frågor: ”Hur framställs skillnaderna och likheterna mellan våld i nära relationer och hedersrelaterat våld, och hur betraktas de som olika fenomen?” samt ”Hur kan synen av olika kulturer påverkas genom att definiera våldet på olika sätt?”. För att besvara dessa frågor har 29 tidningsartiklar om våld i nära relationer och 61 artiklar om hedersrelaterat våld som skrivits i svenska dagstidningar mellan åren 2002 och 2021 samlats in. Dessa har sedan analyserats med hjälp av Laclaus och Mouffes diskursanalys. Analysen fokuserar på hur hedersrelaterat våld och våld i nära relationer presenteras i den mediala debatten. Utifrån analysen uppkom två diskurser: ”Det främmande våldet” samt ”Den mediala rapporteringen av distinktionen mellan olika våld”. Diskursanalysen tillhör det socialkonstruktivistiska perspektivet. Majoriteten av den tidigare forskningen berör det feministiska perspektivet. Dessa perspektiv brukas för att försöka förklara om det finns någon skillnad mellan nyhetsrapporteringen av hedersrelaterat våld och våld i nära relationer samt hur detta påverkar synen på icke-svenska kulturer. Studien klargör att det finns en skillnad på rapporteringen av hedersrelaterat våld och våld i nära relationer. Detta bidrar bland annat till att kunna särskilja olika grupper i samhället där etniska minoriteter framställs som främmande och oförmögen att kunna anpassa sig till det svenska samhället.<br>Through the application of discourse analysis, the purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: “How are the similarities and differences of domestic violence and honour-related violence portrayed, and in what ways are they viewed differently?” and “How can the perception of other cultures be affected by redefining the violence?”. To answer these questions, 29 news articles regarding domestic violence and 61 news articles regarding honour-related violence have been collected and then analysed with the help of Laclau’s and Mouffe’s discourse analysis. The analysis focuses on the way domestic violence and honour-related violence is portrayed in the journalistic space. Through this analysis, two discourses emerged: “The foreign violence” and “The distinction in portrayal of difference types on violence in the sphere of media”. Discourse analysis lies within the realm of social constructivism. Most prior research touches upon the feministic perspective. These perspectives are used in order to explain any difference in the reporting of honour-related violence and domestic violence in the media, and furthermore how it affects the regard of non-Swedish cultures. The study identified that there is a difference in the portrayal of honour-related violence and domestic violence in Swedish media. Ramifications include segregation, leading to the view that ethnic minorities are unable to conform to the structure of Swedish society at large.

Folkbladet is a daily newspaper in Norrköping with a strong local touch whose subscribers are mostly men interested in sports. In an attempt to broaden its readership, since 2009 Folkbladet publishes a magazine called Trend which targets women aged 20-50 years. This magazine in the form of a lifestyle magazine for women with a local touch is about fashion, beauty, interior design and travel. This free magazine is published four times a year and is distributed to every household in Norrköping and its surroundings. No target group analysis has been done to identify which content or design the readers would appreciate. Trend also lack a clear structure that could increase recognition and provide guidance through the contents. The objective of this paper is to examine what women aged 20-50 years in Norrköping and its surroundings ask of the content and design in a free lifestyle magazine, as well as to find out how well the magazine Trend meets these requirements and the established standards within the magazine industry. Based on this objective the following questions were formulated: What type of content does the target´group find desirable in a free lifestyle magazine? What does the audience ask of the design in such a magazine? How well does Trend magazine meet the target group’s requirements and the established standards that exist within the magazine industry? To meet the objective and answer the questions, the current content and design of Trend has been described, combined with a target group survey in which qualitative interviews were conducted with six respondents from the target group: women aged 20-50 years, living in Norrköping and its surroundings. The results of the current state description has been compared with the results of the target group survey, as well as with the established standards in the literature on magazine design. The analysis shows that Trend only partially meets both the target group’s requirements and the established standards. The content covers some of the areas demanded by the target group: fashion,m beauty, interior design and travel, and it has the local touch that the target group finds important. But the target group would also like to read about people with an interesting story, get information about local events, and find simple recipes in the magazine. To reache a larger share of the target group these topics should be considered as additonal content. Out of the already existing topics, interior design and travel are the ones most appreciated by the target group and should therefore be given more editorial space in the magazine. The analysis also shows that Trend needs to adapt both the content and design so as not to be perceived as entirely advertising. The editorial content is confused with advertising due to the way the texts are written and because the design of the editorial pages are not consistent. One way to create greater clarity about the different types of content is to structure the magazine according to a model with a front, a middle and a back section. These sections should have different types of texts of different lengths, and distinct design that distinguishes them from each other. Layout templates and style sheets are a great help for distinguishing the different parts. This is something that Trend currently lack and that should be implemented.<br>Folkbladet är en dagstidning i Norrköping med en stark lokal prägel vars prenumeranter till största delen är sportintresserade män. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka vad kvinnor i åldern 20 - 50 år i Norrköping med omnejd ställer för krav på innehållet och formen i en gratistidning i form av ett livsstilsmagasin, samt att ta reda på hur väl magasinet Trend uppfyller dessa krav och de vedertagna normer som finns inom tidskriftsbranschen. Utifrån syftet formulerades följande frågeställningar: Vilken typ av innehåll tycker målgruppen är önskvärd i en gratistidning i form av ett livsstilsmagasin? Vilka krav ställer målgruppen på utformningen av ett sådant magasin? Hur väl lever magasinet Trend upp till målgruppens krav samt till de vedertagna normer som finns inom tidskriftsbranschen? För att uppfylla syftet och besvara frågeställningarna har en nulägesbeskrivning av Trends innehåll och utformning utförts, i kombination med en målgruppsundersökning, där kvalitativa djupintervjuer har genomförts med sex respondenter ur målgruppen: kvinnor i åldern 20-50 år, bosatta i Norrköping med omnejd. Resultaten av nulägesbeskrivningen har sedan stämts av mot resultaten av målgruppsundersökningen, samt mot de vedertagna normerna i litteratur om tidskriftsdesign. Analysen visar att Trend endast till viss del uppfyller både målgruppens krav och vedertagna normer. Innehållet täcker delvis de områden målgruppen efterfrågar: mode, skönhet, inredning och resor samt har den lokala förankring som målgruppen anser är viktig. Målgruppen vill dock även läsa mer om människor med en intressant historia, få lokala evenemangstips och hitta lättlagade recept i tidningen. För att fånga upp en större del av målgruppen bör det därför övervägas att lägga till dessa ämnen i Trend. Av de redan befintliga ämnesområdena är det heminredning och resor som uppskattas mest av målgruppen och dessa bör därför få ett större utrymme i tidningen. Analysen visar också att Trend behöver anpassa både innehållet och utformningen för att inte uppfattas som en reklamtidning. Det redaktionella innehållet blandas ihop med reklam både på grund av hur texterna är skrivna och på grund av att utformningen av de redaktionella sidorna inte är konsekvent. Ett sätt att skapa större tydlighet kring de olika typerna av innehåll är att strukturera tidskriften enligt en modell med framvagn, mitt och bakvagn. Dessa delar bör ha olika slags texter med olika längd, samt en tydlig utformning som särskiljer dem från varandra. Layoutmallar och stilmallar är till stor hjälp för att särskilja de olika delarna. Detta är något Trend saknar idag och bör införa.

decision-making authority have had an impact on the newsrooms of the Cape Town
newspapers Die Burger, the supplement Jip, community newspaper MetroBurger, the
Cape Times, the Cape Argus, the Weekend Argus and the Southern Mail, one title of the
Cape Community Newspapers. Labour legislation promulgated in South Africa in 1994
means companies have to employ human resources equitably in keeping with the racial
demographics of each province. Given the historical background of the South African
media and the fact that it is almost 10 years after the first democratic elections in this
country, what new paths have black South African women journalists forged for new
journalists? This study focuses on the role of black women with regard to decisionmaking
at the aforementioned newspapers. During the course of this study, 5 of the 6
women respondents have resigned from their positions. Other findings are that the
editors generally have limited knowledge of the responsibilities of the women in this
study. The editors have also indicated that no changes have been made or will be made
to the job descriptions of the women, while the women have indicated that there have,
indeed, been changes to their job descriptions. These changes have related to editorial
and non-editorial responsibilities. While no training plans have been set out specifically
for the women respondents, most of them have indicated they wanted more training
opportunities. Most of the women respondents have indicated higher remuneration and
job satisfaction as being the main reasons for resigning.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die studie ondersoek die impak wat swart vroue in senior bestuursposisies met

Hierdie veranderings was verwant aan redaksionele en nie-redaksionele

hierdie studie nie, het die meeste van hulle aangedui dat hulle meer
opleidingsgeleenthede sou wou hê. Die meeste respondente het ook aangedui dat die

This study is an attempt to analyse the newspaper supplements published by the Turkish printed press. An analysis of the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the contents of the newspaper supplements selected due to the circulation numbers follows a brief history of the newspaper supplements. The study ends with the interviews made with the editor-in-chiefs of the weekend supplements. What results from these two analyses on different levels is that even though the basic aim of the daily newspaper supplements, mainly the weekend supplements is to increase the advertising revenues of the publishing companies, the content presented to the readers through these supplements also plays an important role in the social-ideological reproduction as the symbol of a specific life style. Therefore, this study also shows that critical political-economic approaches have to be completed with cultural analyses in the media studies.

This thesis is concerned with the Revolutionary press in the provinces and Paris as it relates to the local female community. It aims to show that the Revolutionary press was a vehicle for community information both aimed at and originating from literate women who had access to printed material. That is to say, literate women used their local papers to advertise themselves and their wares, express their views on a subject, to seek answers to questions and also to refute false information which was circulating about them. In addition, local information which was relevant to women could be publicised in the pages of a newspaper and it would be read. Finally, when describing women in news reports these periodicals employed a stock of phrases and literary or linguistic devices to present a specific picture of the females in question. The way in which women were depicted was intended either to unite the Revolutionary community against a female foe or to exalt a particular woman as a beacon of Revolutionary virtues. The approach to the sources will be one of considering newspapers and journalistic rhetoric as being engaged in the process of creating their own view of the world from the raw material of actual events, views which promoted the political loyalties or the ethos of a particular journal. Since it aims to examine continuity and rupture between the pre-Revolutionary and Revolutionary press, the time-scale for this thesis is 1780-1800. This allows for comparisons and contrasts to be made and the thesis will show that although the provincial press contained many of the elements found in their pre-Revolutionary predecessors, the cultural changes engendered by the Revolution meant that new elements of journalistic language and new subjects for discussion developed or emerged. This work is located in the existing body of literature on the French regional and Parisian press in the eighteenth century, particularly the work of Jeremy Popkin, Hugh Gough, Jean Sgard, Gilles Feyel and Pierre Rétat. It is also linked to works on the wider world of contemporary print, for example by Robert Darnton and Roger Chartier and to the literature by Olwen Hufton, Sarah Maza and Joan Landes on the experience and roles of eighteenth-century French women. Its place in the midst of all this literature is that of drawing together the strands of Popkin's, Gough's, Sgard's and Feyel's work to argue that the Revolutionary newspaper was an instrument not simply of general information for a particular community or section of the population but also of communication on subjects which were of importance to, or which were deemed by editors or government officials to be of importance to women.

Trafficking women for sexual abuse has been a serious concern worldwide, particularly over the last two decades. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimated that illicit profits of human trafficking may be as high as $32 billion. However, the international media community has scarcely focused on North Korean women defectors and victims of human trafficking, despite the severity of the issue. More than two million North Koreans, predominantly women, have crossed borders to enter China from starvation. Among those women migrants, about 80% to 90% of them were abducted by traffickers at the border between North Korea and China, and the traffickers sold them to the Chinese sex industry or Chinese men who are unable to find a woman as a wife or a sex slave.This cross-cultural textual analysis examined South Korean and Western (U.S. and British) newspaper coverage of North Korean women as victims of human trafficking to discover similarities and differences in those countries’ news frames. The analysis has shown that politics was a crucial factor in the coverage of the issue. However, by generally failing to report on the fundamental causes of the trafficking, such as inequality between genders, both Western and South Korean newspapers perpetuated hegemonic masculinity and failed to inform and educate people about the grave situations of North Korean women defectors and victims of human trafficking. This study recommends that in reporting the trafficking issues, journalists must be able to observe objectively, not within ideologies or frames provided by politicians.

It acquaints us with the rights to which women in the 19th and 20th centuries were acquired. This work also deals with current issues of women in entering the labor market, and describes the forms of discrimination that women face. The theoretical part is also elaborated the topic of how perceptions of mass media on gender issues. The practical part deals with public opinion on gender issues and compares the results of data collected from the People newspaper in 2005 and 2012. Applying this methodological tool was a questionnaire and content analysis.

Over the course of the Civil War the small community of Waterford, Virginia maintained Unionist sentiments regardless of being a part of the Confederate States of America. These sentiments were rooted in loyalty to the United States, their ostracization from southern culture, and their Quaker faith. In particular, the women of this community became exceptionally vocal with their displeasure with the Confederacy. In the last year of the Civil War they made the deliberate choice to publicly assert their Unionist convictions with their newspaper The Waterford News. The experience of this community, particularly that of its female residents, was influenced by the variety of identities that they held.
The women of Waterford were Quakers, female, southern, unionist and editors/producers of a newspaper. The community of Waterford, Virginia was placed in the margins of Southern society because of the cultural differences rooted in their Quaker faith. The Civil War created a chaotic historical moment where those on the margins of society experienced it differently than those around them. By examining their identities as newspaper producers, as citizens of different groups, and within their interpersonal relationships the reality of how war is lived is brought to light. All of these factors reveal how war is lived, and how lives are manipulated to fit within times of chaos.
