This article explores the characteristics, experiences, and motivations of men and women who secure work through digital platforms. Drawing on quantitative survey data – the first of its kind – of Australian men (n = 251) and women (n = 253) it finds that the gig economy, much like the wider economy, is highly gender-segregated. Men dominate platforms which specialise in what might be considered traditionally male tasks like transport and women dominate platforms which specialise in more traditional female tasks like caring. The results suggest that the gig economy may be an alternative for wo

Many questions can be raised about the position of women in business in China. Has the reform period given women greater opportunities to enhance their economic and social status? What proportion of new small businesses are owned by women and how does the situation in China compare with that in other countries? Are women involved in large businesses? Are women in managerial positions in private business? Are women as motivated as men to achieve managerial positions? Do men and women in China manage businesses differently? This essay explores the sexual-economic transactions between Turkish men and women from the former Soviet Union (FSU), focusing on Trabzon, a Turkish port town on the southeast coast of the Black Sea. I first provide background on 'the new migration' from the FSU to Turkey, paying particular attention to some of the political stakes in discussions of transnational sex work. I then explore these issues through the stories of two migrant women from the FSU who live in Trabzon. In these stories I highlight the ambiguity and complexity of sexual-economic transactions between local men and migrant

Abstract:
While all media workers face challenges particular to flexible specialization in a networked economy, there are differences in career outcomes for men and women, which occur as a result of gendered work cultures. Within media production these gendered contexts manifest through three main factors, which compromise women workers and can eventually cause them to exit their professions mid-career. Women leave media work because of a combination of the gendered nature of work cultures, the informalisation of the sector and structural restrictions placed on women’s agency to participate in networks.

This article analyzes gender inequality in Russia’s rural informal economy. Continuation of unequal gendered roles in Russia’s rural informal economy suggests that tradition and custom remain strong. Gender differentials in time spent tending the household garden remain significant, as is the distribution of household tasks into gendered roles in ways that effect professional advancement for women. Land ownership is the domain of men, and women are not owners in Russia’s new economy. Moreover, men earn more from entrepreneurial activity, a function of how male and female services are valued an

This article is about the power of a norm and its mutation over time: the gender role division of the private nuclear family composed of a male provider and protector, and his dependent children and homemaker wife. Those roles corresponded to rigid distinctions that were made between a male public world of work, money, and politics, on the one hand, and a female private sphere of reproduction and nurturance, on the other. These were prescribed ideals of gender. However, as such, the ideals have had tremendous power, shaping personal identity and the daily lives of men and women, as well as inf

Abstract This chapter interrogates the increasingly popular notion of waithood, and particularly the idea that most young people are stuck permanently in waithood because they cannot enter the labour market. Based on empirical data gathered from young rural women and men in Uganda, Ethiopia and Nigeria, the meaning of farming and other economic activities in their lives, particularly in relation to social status, is presented. Other avenues for claim making on social recognition, status and respect are then analysed, with a focus on marriage, family life, and active citizenship. Throughout the chapter the gendered nature of the process of becoming a social adult is emphasized.

Abstract:
Abstract Here we explore the chemical practice of skin whitening, a prevalent practice among young service sector workers in the Philippines and Indonesia. Chemical Whiteness investigates this problematic practice in everyday interactions, where people with darker skin are undervalued and those with lighter skin, which is considered pleasing to employers and clients, attain a higher value in the workplace. These workers are pressured to portray the good life they are selling to their clients, performing the “pleasing personality” that their companies want to associate with their services. To lighten their skin, our interlocutors apply range of expensive and often harmful products, often involving daily reapplication. While skin lightening is commonly associated with women, we discovered that in the Philippines, young men competing for positions in sales and customer service had also developed their own beauty routines with skin whitening products. While such practices are meant to increase young people’s worth in the service sector economy, like many other chemical practices explored in this book, they can lead to the further precarization of young people’s lives.

The "Financial Behavior" in the field of "decision making" is the topic that awarded the economist Richard H. Thaler the Nobel Prize in 2017. According to him, after many investigations made on human decisions, it is noticed that they often depend on nature, intuition, habits, cognitive biases, emotional biases which lead the investor to wrong decisions. Given that the investments play an important and central role in the economy, the main purpose of the paper is to analyze the investment decision making process based on emotional bias, or more specifically the overconfidence bias.
