Abstract:
This history of philosophy is a history of men. Or at least, that’s how it has been told over the past several hundred years. But, over the last few decades, we’ve begun to see more and more recognition of women philosophers and the huge impact that they have had on the course of our discipline. There have always been philosophers who happened to be women. Hypatia of Alexandria was known by her contemporaries simply as The Philosopher, and hundreds of young men travelled from throughout the region to attend her public lectures. Philosophers who happen to be women, then, are nothing new. But our failure to recognise them as full contributors to the subject makes them appear to us as something of a surprise. A result of this is that women are often remembered as women first: they are seen more as women than they’re seen as philosophers.

Abstract:
The authors adopt a critico‐sociological methodology to investigate the current state of the philosophical profession. According to them, the question concerning the status of philosophy (“What is philosophy?”) cannot be answered from within the precinct of philosophical reason alone, since philosophy—understood primarily as a profession—is marked by a constitutive type of self‐ignorance that prevents it from reflecting upon its own sociological conditions of actuality. This ignorance, which is both cause and effect of the organization and investment of philosophical desire, causes philosophers to lose themselves in an ideological myth (“the philosopher as idea(l)”) according to which philosophers are unaffected by the material conditions in which they exist. This myth prevents philosophers from noticing the extent to which their activity is influenced by extra‐philosophical determinants that shape, empirically, who becomes a professional philosopher (“the philosopher as imago”) and who doesn't. This article explores the relationship between philosophy's “idea(l)” and its “imago” as a way of shedding light on some of the mechanisms that make philosophy inhospitable for so many women, people of color, and economic minorities.

Abstract:
If we [women] have not stopped rape, we have redefined it, we have faced it, and we have set up the structures to deal with it for ourselves.[T]he definition of rape, which has in the past always been understood to mean the use of violence or the threat of it to force sex upon an unwilling woman, is now being broadened to include a whole range of sexual relations that have never before in all of human experience been regarded as rape.In 1989 the philosopher and self-described feminist Christina Sommers published a short essay — ‘an opinion piece,’ she called it — that was eventually developed into and published as a philosophical article. In this essay Sommers criticized ‘feminist philosophers’ (her term) for being ‘oddly unsympathetic to the women whom they claim to represent.’ Specifically, Sommers accused these philosophers of ignoring the ‘values of the average woman’ and of being caught up in an ‘ideological fervor.’ To emphasize her point that the so-called feminist philosophers have lost touch with ‘the average woman,’ Sommers wrote that ‘One must nevertheless expect that many women will continue to swoon at the sight of Rhett Butler carrying Scarlett O'Hara up the stairs to a fate undreamt of in feminist philosophy.’

Coleman, Jenny. ""Philosophers in petticoats" : a feminist analysis of the discursive practices of Mary Taylor, Mary Colclough and Ellen Ellis as contributors to debate on the 'woman question' in New Zealand between 1845-1885." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Feminist Studies, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4580.

Full text
Abstract:
Utilising a feminist poststructuralist analytic framework and employing methodological assumptions associated with the New Historicism this study considers the processes involved in developing resistant discursive strategies and the theoretical potential of marginality as a site for the transformation of social relations. This is accomplished through attention to the subjectivities, identities and social practices of three nineteenth century women's right advocates Mary Taylor, Mary Colclough and Ellen Ellis. The women at the centre of this study are positioned as ex-centric subjects with subversive subjectivities. It is argued that, in their assumptions regarding the natures of 'woman' and 'man', in their understandings of themselves as women, in their strategic invocations of identity, and in their daily social practices, each of these women disrupted dominant nineteenth century understandings about women's nature, place and role. In challenging the boundaries of women’s prescribed activities in their own lives, and in encouraging other women to do so, each made significant contributions to women's increased participation as women in many aspects of social and political life in the mid- to late- nineteenth century in New Zealand.

Qiao, Yiyuanfang. "“A FRIEND FROM FAR AWAY”: BERTOLT BRECHT AND HIS CHINESE-INFLUENCED WORKS." VCU Scholars Compass, 2016. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4162.

Abstract:
In the theatre field, Bertolt Brecht could be counted as a representation of cross-cultural phenomenon. His Verfremdungseffekt theory, Marxist beliefs and wide application of Chinese elements made him a significant stop for every person in theatre who has a passion for Chinese culture. For this reason, I am studying Brecht as a representative innovator who adapted the Eastern Asian elements, especially those from China, into his work, to illustrate this cultural phenomenon and the artistic achievement of his works as well. As an old saying in the Confucian Analects, “Isn’t it delightful to have friends coming from far away? ”, Brecht is like an old friend of China even though he never went to there. Since his works have been introduced into China from 1930s to 1940s, research of Brecht experienced ups and downs through the different political eras. Even now, Brecht’s theory and practice still has a deep impact on the Chinese drama. I particularly focus on Brecht’s works toward China, and try to illustrate them based on the former research from the European and American scholars as well as from Chinese scholars. I will clarify the Chinese traditional philosophy as the foundation of the whole thesis as well as the beginning of the first chapter, and analyze the Chinese-styled abstraction of Brecht’s poetry. In Chapter Two, I will illuminate the interaction between Brecht and traditional Chinese opera based on Huang Zuolin’s research. In addition, I will clarify the long-term misunderstanding that Chinese drama had for Brecht. In Chapter Three, I will focus on A Good Woman of Sichuan and The Caucasian Chalk Circle as representations to interpret the relationship between Brecht’s and the original versions as well as the Chinese philosophy that Brecht’s version has employed. Finally, the conclusion contains not only the summary, but also the possibilities for Brecht research in the future. Hopefully my work could balance both the objective truth and my personal thoughts, and contribute to the ones who may need them in the future.

Abstract:
This work consists on the presentation of proposals of new ways to teach the contents of Philosophy of the 10th school grade. This is done by the suggestion of various activities for the diverse themes, based on the thinking produced by female philosophers as well as on the discussion about issues raised by the problematic of the equality of gender within the context of the teaching of Philosophy. One aims to contribute and to promote a critical and reflexive attitudein young people so as to foster active citizenship, by means of conceptualizing an alternative table of contents and at the same time respecting the predefined curricular objectives. For each proposal the aimed objectives are specified and so are the resources used for their achievement, alongside with the learning methodology for each activity. The brief overview on the western reasoning, in which it is shown that there have always been women philosophers ever since Ancient Greece until present time, together with the existence of male philosophers who have thought over the issues of gender, allows us to ask the question: «As women philosophers exist, why are they not included in the contents of the Philosophy subject in secondary studies?» Bearing this question in mind and aiming to answer it, a critical analysis of the programme of Philosophy was made, with the objective of showing that its themes enable the inclusion of the thinking developed either by women or by men over female philosophers. Hence the presentation of a brief philosophical corpus built by female thinkers of the 20th century, who have dealt with the fundamental issues of our times, and who are admissible to be included in the contents of this school subject. This was done with a special attention to the issues of ethics once these are transversal to the programme itself. Upon those theories, new proposals of approach of the contents of Philosophy of the 10th school grade were made. This been done with the resource of the thinking produced by women theorists and the discussion created over the issues of the equality of gender in the teaching of Philosophy.

Evans, Stephanie Yvette. "Living legacies: Black women, educational philosophies, and community service, 1865–1965." 2003. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI3096273.

Full text
Abstract:
The first chapter of this dissertation is an introduction to the topics of community service-learning and Black women's intellectual history. The author outlines definitions, theoretical frameworks, guiding questions, and methodological approaches in this research. Here, Ms. Evans explains the contribution that Black women's educational philosophies can make to current practices of community service-learning. Chapter Two is a survey of the presence, oppression, contribution, and creative resistance of Black women in United States educational systems between Emancipation in 1865 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. A comprehensive picture of research on Black women's educational experience in the United States is presented. Ms. Evans argues that Black women's educational experiences offer a rich historical context in which to comprehend the larger social conditions in which contemporary educators are working. In Chapter Three, the author presents four educators whose work provide clear examples of how Black women have theorized and practiced community-based education. The writing of Frances (Fanny) Jackson Coppin (1837–1913), Anna Julia Cooper (1858?–1964), Mary McLeod Bethune (1875–1955), and Septima Poinsette Clark (1898–1987) are presented. Connections are made between these educators' intellectual development and their work for local, national, and international community empowerment. In Chapter Four, the author details the contribution that this work makes to Black women's intellectual history. Ms. Evans analyzes the experiences and thoughts of the four Black women case studies, considers aspects of Black Feminist Thought, and outlines the impact of cultural identity on social experience. Recommendations are made about how to use historical analysis in order to practice community service-learning in a culturally appropriate manner. In Chapter Five, areas of future research are presented, specifically those areas that relate to the ideas of Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, and John Dewey. Lastly, Ms. Evans includes observations about her own experiences as a student and practitioner of community service-learning. In Chapter Six, “A Discussion on Sources,” the author reviews the most popular service-learning literature and surveys African American educational historiography that is relevant to those doing service-learning work.

Abstract:
The present study examines the contemporary rewriting in the French language of Euripides' play The Trojan Women by Jean Paul Sartre. The French philosopher having the intention once more to deal with humanitys big problems, he intensifies Euripides text with elements drawn from modern society and era. The theme dealt with is war and suppression, along with their conviction, a pattern especially popular with the creator since it is the one he deals with in his debut drama Bariona ou le fils de tonnerre (1940). Also, The Trojan Women (1964) linguistic style matches that of Bariona and Nekrassov (1955), since the personalities of the main heroes in all three plays are governed by the same notions: self denial, rebelliousness and a firm belief in the ideals. The element which distinguishes the abovementioned texts from the rest of the writers dramaturgic work is their abstinence from an existential and psychological analytical spirit. Thus, the existentialist dramaturgists familiar speech with which so many scholars have been preoccupied is almost absent from The Trojan Women. The Sartres goal is to shout out loud Euripides big truths and in order to achieve it, he instills into his heroes additional characteristics, thus giving them an even more rebellious and aggressive constitution than the already existing one, expressed by a modern glossolalia. In The Trojan Women, the pioneer writer also deals with the impaired place of woman in contemporary society, an idea also existing in current days.

Full text
Abstract:
Sophisticated mechanical characterisation is vital in support of a fundamental understanding of deformation in ceramic matrix composites. On the component scale, “damage tolerant” design and lifing philosophies depend upon laboratory assessments of macro-scale specimens, incorporating typical fibre architectures and matrix under representative stress-strain states. Standard SiCf/SiC processing techniques inherently introduce porosity between the individual reinforcing fibres and between woven fibre bundles. Subsequent mechanical loading (static or cyclic) may initiate cracking from these stress concentrations in addition to fibre/matrix decohesion and delamination. The localised coalescence of such damage ultimately leads to rapid failure. Proven techniques for the monitoring of damage in structural metallics, i.e. optical microscopy, potential drop systems, acoustic emission (AE) and digital image correlation (DIC), have been adapted for the characterisation of CMC’s tested at room temperature. As processed SiCf/SiC panels were subjected to detailed X-ray computed tomography (XCT) inspection prior to specimen extraction and subsequent static and cyclic mechanical testing to verify their condition. DIC strain measurements, acoustic emission and resistance monitoring were performed and correlated to monitor the onset of damage during loading, followed by intermittent XCT inspections throughout the course of selected tests.

Full text
Abstract:
Madame Grès (1903-1993) worked for six decades in the exclusive world of Parisian haute couture, creating clothes as if they were living sculptures, always in search of the ideal dress. Her legacy was designs marked by a ceaseless quest for absolute beauty. Her long, draped dresses crafted with obsession and technical mastery are a profound reflection on fashion, time and memory. In its undying association with sculpture, her oeuvre encloses an inherent affirmative, solid, timeless perpetuity. Respect for the principles of design lies in Grès’s discourse with textiles; because it is a discourse, a thought that is transformed into matter, that grows pleat by pleat in a game of alternating light and shade. The couturier's folds enclose successive pain and mystery, melancholy and persistence, obsession and conviction. There can be no doubt that Grès’s gowns were designed for the female form, in the cutting and manipulation of the fabric, in a prodigious, precise technique in which nothing could be left to chance. This is why they are perfect examples of the highest calling of design.Nonetheless, it is precisely in the relationship between body and gown, the harmony and tension between the organic and inorganic, that Grès’s work goes beyond mere design. It moves naturally into the real world of creation, as the couturier’s gowns do not just dress the body; they become the body itself, in which fabric and flesh turn into a single, indivisible, absolute entity. Even though her oeuvre was much wider than the so-called “goddess dresses”, the long draped gowns, reminiscent of eternal time, became her archetype. Incontrast with the ephemeral nature of fashion, it is my goal to show in the course of this paper that precisely the opposite can be true, through the observation of the French couturier’s meticulous, emotional and innovative pleating technique, in which the role of avant-garde materials is crucial. The expressive use of pleating and drapery in all its limitless variation and fluidity along the outside is rightly considered to be Grès’ hallmark. Grès had a profound respect for the textile material, honouring its integrity, preferring not to cut it, and reducing its size through successive pleats — the amplitude of her dresses’ skirts could occasionally reach twenty metres in diameter. Grès’s work was unmistakably modern, though it did not seem to belong to a particular age. At the same time, it takes us back to a distant past and forward into the future. The evocative power of her gowns is absolutely breathtaking. It is ingrained in their materiality, the details of their construction, and the quest for perfection and for beauty. Although a woman of her time, bound by a cultural context specific to her epoch, there is a deliberate quest for timelessness at the very heart of Grès’ work, which, I argue, can be perceived in her technique. In a manual process, wrapped in an emotional dimension, each draping, rib, or pleat is worked minutely, actively taking part in the construction of the garment’s final shape. The initial width of the fabric could be reduced to a few centimetres by an exquisite pleating technique: to be kept in place the folds were sewn at the back, a sartorial innovation in the universe of Parisian haute-couture. Time seems to be suspended by this technical detail. In the light of the French philosopher Henri Bergson's theory, this suspension can be seen as durée, a moment of simultaneity, an experience of temporality based on a constant interaction between the past (the classical approach), the present (the moment of the making of the dress) and the future (the preview of the following repetitive gesture of making). In the draping of the fabric, we become conscious of the physical dimension of the hand that created the sculptural object, that carved the cloth as if it was stone, involving the body in a game of hide and seek, concealing and revealing its contours, emphasising its movements. It is this tension between the body and the fabric that brings the dresses alive, as the result of an emotional relationship between the humanity of the making process and the technical innovation of the textile material.

Abstract:
The words of ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu make the simplest, yet most profound, case for transformation – a change of direction, a fundamental shift in the nature or character of something, recasting the existing order and ways of doing things. This is what the world needs now, as institutions and systems of the past century prove unable to address the challenges of impending planetary disaster, persistent poverty, pandemics, rising fundamentalism and authoritarianism, wars, and everyday violence. Against a background of a worldwide backlash against women’s rights, gender parity in leadership positions – in legislatures, corporations, or civil society – has proved inadequate, as women in these roles often reproduce dominant patriarchal leadership models or propagate ideologies and policies that do not actually advance equality or universal human rights. What is required is truly transformative, visionary leadership, whereby new paradigms, relationships and structures are constructed on the basis of peace, planetary health, and social and economic justice.
