Abstract:
Unlike the feminism abstracting the feminine into a historical discursive construction and currently demanding to deconstruct the dualism of sexual differences considered mandatory and restrictive, in this research we intend to demonstrate that, if The woman does not exist, according to the thesis of Jaques Lacan, the feminine insists not as category that would finally give consistency to the woman as gender, but as a real that affects the talking being and requires solutions of nomination according the foreclosure of The women significant in the unconscious. In the first part, entitled \"The women and the feminine in the culture\", we explored the various female names that designated the women throughout western history ranging from the terror on women, through different forms of defamation, until its worship by the beauty bias or by the effect that its appointment can cause. The names of the feminine that Freud sought on psychoanalytic experience and in the contribution brought by women analysts at the time are also evaluated, as well as the theory of Lacan on women and the feminine condition. In the second part, entitled \"Women analysis\", we investigated the solutions and deadlocks heading the female from the analysis of four women: Anna O., the young homosexual, Helene Deutsch and Marguerite Duras through its character Lol V. Stein, praised by Lacan to have elucidated a practice of convergent letter with the use of the unconscious, theme of our research.

This thesis is an extension of a research in psychoanalysis about perversion and women started in the Specialization course and extended in the Masters. From the constant affirmation in the Lacanian field about the lack of women structurally perverse, we followed the course on the Freud and Lacan study of perversion to question the existence of structurally perverse women. To do this, in the first chapter, we pursued the Freudian theory of sexuality, distinguishing perversity of perversion and delimiting the difference between polymorphous perversity and perverse structure through the concepts of fixation (Fixierung) and exclusivity, present in Freud since 1905, and the perverse mechanism (Verleugnung), proclaimed by Lacan, but current in Freudian work. This chapter also researched the importance of the text A child is being beaten (FREUD, 1919) and the Oedipal experience to understand the perversions. From there, we analyze the fetishism and the pairs of opposites, sadism-masochism (scrutinizing the works of Marquis de Sade and Sacher-Masoch, responsibles for the origin of the terms) and voyeurism-exhibitionism. The second chapter was dedicated generally to fantasy. We start this concept in Freud and Lacan to subsequently think about the acts. Then, we examine the definition in psychoanalysis of man and woman, different from that used by biology, to question the existence of perverse women. In the third part of this research, we use the story of two women, Gertrude Bainszewski and Suzane von Richthofen, evaluate the Violette case from André (1995) and we ponder the character of Erika Kohut in The piano teacher (2001) to think about the theory presented so far

Abstract:
My dissertation looks at the connections between Lacan’s four discourses and the sexuation graph in order to claim that sexuation is discursive and that, as Lacan presents it with the phallus as its quilting point, the sexuation graph is a narrative based on patriarchal hegemony, which is one of many possible narratives. I argue that through the hysteric’s discourse and a removal of the phallus as the Symbolic-Imaginary quilting point, we can begin to formulate new narratives of sexuated subjectivities. The textual objects I use for this project are literary and filmic works where women are the central topic or figure, and the works are all created and developed by men. Following Kristeva’s focus on the semiotic, in particular men’s avant-garde writing, I choose these works as illustrations of the ways in which the depiction of women has shifted in the wake of at least half a century of feminist and queer scholarship and activism. Grounded in Lacan’s claim that “Woman does not exist,” I explicate Woman as metaphor as an Imaginary construction of masculinist logic in order to develop a theory of Woman as metonymy that collapses the oppressive, Imaginary constructions and proliferations of Woman. Finally, I read closely Lacan’s sexuation graph, specifically turning it sideways and replacing the phallus with the general, empty master signifier to show the ways in which we can construct new meanings of subjectivity.

Abstract:
What are the effects of the diagnosis of prematurity on mothers\' discourse and their repercussions on the mother-child relationship? Based on an issue that arose in the psychoanalytic experience in a pediatric hospital, this study aims to analyze the effects of the prematurity on the maternal speech by means of preliminary psychoanalytic interviews with mothers of premature children. This is a clinical qualitative research that proposes some articulation between clinical practice and theory based on the construction of four clinical cases justified by the theoretical reference of the psychoanalysis of Freud, Lacan and contemporary authors. If, in the social imagery, prematurity is associated with difficulties in various contexts of life, the analysis of each case shows that this diagnosis may or may not be triggered by the subject towards those significant ones who label them in such a defining form. In this sense, prematurity moves away from the place determinant of something that always labels and decides, into a place that can only be heard about in oneto- one conversations. For the case studies, the mother-woman disintegration has been singled out as a central conceptual operator due to its prevalence in the speeches, in a theoretical route based on the history of maternal love, under the psychoanalytical examination of maternity from the perspective of female sexuality. Such considerations are based on the myth of Badinter\'s maternal love toward the equivalence of the son as a surrogate for the lack of phallus, in Freud, to the emphasis on the woman\'s desire in the mother, in Lacan. The discussion presents the different roles allocated to prematurity and the prevalence of deadlocks typical of the mother-woman conjunction and disjunction reflected on the mother-child relationship

Abstract:
Classic films have created a stereotypical image of women by setting deterministic standards for female personality, her role and what is meant by ‘being a woman’. These standards might supplant reality, as they minimize the diversity of female figures. Feminism has long fought against gender stereotypes. This study examines films by Agnès Varda, Chantal Akerman and Catherine Corsini in order to understand the construction of femininity through intimate and social relations. In their films, each filmmaker develops unique approaches to produce images of the female body and its subjectivity. Psychoanalysis sheds light on the questions of female subjectivity related to the notions of desire, pleasure, and sexuality. It allows us to appreciate the mechanism of the camera arousing the viewers’ fantasies, as well as the possibility of a positive objectification of the complex female figure. This study first focuses on the relationships between women, such as the mother-daughter relationship and the homosexual relationship. It then explores the socio-cultural context in which the female characters live through an analysis of language, narration and space in the films, namely the filmmakers’ styles, aesthetics and narrative choices in the life of women. It examines how gender can influence the camera’s perspective and how it can question, or even produce, a new female subjectivity. Psychoanalysis, feminism, queer theory, semiology and aesthetics are all approaches which support and expand the analyses of female perspective as developed by the three women filmmakers

Abstract:
------- ABSTRACT ------- A number of the conventional psychoanalytical theories about women have been criticized for being determined by patriarchal ideologies and inadequate to the psychic reality of women. They have also received limited empirical support from Psychology and other areas. Based on these psychoanalytical theories, we aimed to explore the extent in which psychologists and Psychology students agreed with them and if that agreement was related to aspects of their personal representation of women. A questionnaire containing two instruments developed for this study (ECTPM scale and TRIC semi-projective test) was administered to a convenience sample of 101 psychologists and 4th and 5th year Psychology students. It was found a considerable variability between subjects concerning the agreement with psychoanalytical theories. This agreement was more related to personal variables (i.e., it was higher in men and in younger subjects) than to professional variables (i.e., model, area). A higher agreement was related with several aspects of the representation of women: a less vague and more precise representation of women; a higher self-focus as reference for the perception of women; a higher amount of narcissistic answers; a higher amount of moral and appearance/sexual contents. There were differences in the representation according to gender, age, model and area of Psychology. These results question the objective and universalized value of these theories about women, since they seem to be considerably related to a personal involvement, which has practical implications.

This paper seeks to analyze the inter-relationship of three theories: feminism, psychoanalysis and postmodernism. It attempts to do this by focussing on the issue of sex crimes; how each theory provides an explanation for the phenomenon of sex crimes. It goes on to examine each theory in more detail, using their position on sex crimes as a starting point to a discussion of their theoretical foundations. It acknowledges the major writers in the field and notices the current trend of analysis to be that of merger between the theories. The paper examines both the feasibility and validity of such a merger.

Abstract:
While the term sadomasochism might conjure cursory images of whips, chains, and leather-clad fetishists, this thesis delves deeper into sadomasochistic theory to analyze dynamics of power and powerlessness represented by a chosen sample of literary relationships. Using two contemporary works of vampire literature—Anne Rice's novel Interview with the Vampire and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series—I examine how power is structured by and between male and female characters (and vampires and humans), and particularly emphasize the patriarchal messages these works' regressive sexual politics engender. Psychoanalysis and feminist theory are employed to support my overarching argument following the gendered dynamics of male sadism and female masochism (and vampire sadism and human masochism), as this dyad reflects men's and women's "normalized" roles of power and powerlessness, respectively, in today's society. Sadomasochistic relationships as depicted in this literature are created through mutual contracts or, what I refer to as, sociocultural sadomasochism to reflect the gendered power imbalances inherent in patriarchy. By concluding with readers' responses to these franchises, this thesis further attempts to determine why such unequal and oppressive relationships are desirable. Since vampires as Gothic figures embody what specific cultures dread yet desire, this literature possesses frightening implications—gender roles are conservative and masculinity is privileged in fiction and, by extension, in twenty-first-century American culture.

Proctor, Nancy E. "American women sculptors in Rome in the mid-nineteenth century : feminist and psychoanalytic readings of a displaced canon." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1998. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/894/.

Full text
Abstract:
Henry James's phrase, `white, marmorean flock', has become the defining image for the American women sculptors who worked in Rome in the midnineteenth century at the height of neoclassicism, subsuming their works and histories under the connotations of its words. Instead of simply permitting us to name these sculptors, `white, marmorean flock' raises both a problem of historiography, as a study of the exclusion of the women sculptors from questionable canons, and, more importantly, a problematic of the feminine and subjectivity in the context of artistic Symbolic activity. Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1860 novel about expatriate artists in Rome, The Marble Faun, is a primary site for the excavation of the foundations of our contemporary understanding of the American women sculptors in Rome in the mid-nineteenth century. Conflated with the objects of her creative production in a `Pygmalion effect', the woman sculptor is figured in Hawthorne's novel as a limit, embodying an impossible (for phallic cultural discourses) coincidence of femininity and creativity. Read through a matrixial lens, sculptures by Edmonia Lewis intrude uncannily in these canonical narratives of the nineteenth century, as the woman sculptor of colour in the studio destabilises and unfixes gender, race, and class identities. Here too the Sadean `nothingness' of the neoclassical sculpture emerges as a limit in our understanding of nineteenth century modes of seeing -a limit which is perhaps best approached `through the defiles of the signifier', photography. For although the flat, white, ideologically-laden surfaces of American history sculpture are now articulated by the spaces of the modernist white cube gallery, the woman sculptor remains a `strange and estranged' stain on the screen of American art, `rather out of place in the picture'. By focussing on the margins of American art history, this study deploys the anamorphic effect in an attempt to `hallow the hollow and to hollow the hallow': to move towards reading the works and histories of the American women sculptors who worked in Rome in the mid-nineteenth century in a symbolic register in which white is also black, and sculptors are also women.

Abstract:
Female magazines emerge as an official knowledge that objectively and impartially produces an effect of transparency of meaning and truth about woman. According to the Discourse Analysis proposed by Pêcheux -DA (the theoretical-methodological referential adopted by this research), this erasing of the constitution process of the meaning leads the subject to the recognition of itself and to the occupation of the place where it belongs in the discourse. In this perspective, the subject is a discursive position. Interpellated by the ideology, the subject creates meaning. That occurs because there is a need of sedimentation of sense so that it originates a logically stable universe. However, Freud at the end of his work asks himself what does the woman want, while Lacan, in his return to the Freudian work, proposes his provocative formula the woman does not exist. This dissertation aims to analyze female magazines extracts from different periods (from 1917 to 2007) to propose how these magazines build meanings about what is a woman and what a woman wants, under the discourse production conditions. Because the DA concerns the historical determination of the signification processes, it is important to return to the feminism history and to academic feminists texts, both seen here as an interdiscourse present in the discourse of female magazines. While the Psychoanalysis tries to investigate how The woman is formed, female magazines are concerned with describing the woman and her behavior, sedimenting and naturalizing meanings and originating a norm of identification. The Psychoanalysis considers The woman as a subject position in front of the joy and the submission of the phallic logic (not-whole), so the woman would not form a rule as the man, they could only be counted one by one. On the other hand, the female magazines build these meanings by using discursive generics (encapsulated formulas that codify values and beliefs), naturalizing the meanings assigned to the woman and her activities. We concluded that both the feminist movement, in order to promote changes and brakages of all kinds (moral, religious, juridical), and the female magazines, different from the Psychoanalysis, propose a positivity of an universal subject named woman

Abstract:
Aging has become a problem for men and women in Western societies where youth is touted and revered as a standard of success by which individual value is measured and esteemed. Older women in particular find that as they age they face discrimination in the form of ageism and social diminution. The purpose of the study is to remedy a lack of scholarship on aging in Appalachia and to establish a precedent for future studies. A liberal, feminist approach is used to analyze the results of recorded interviews and to interpret transcripts of relevant data. The results of the analysis are mixed owing to the heterogeneity of the women interviewed and the differences in personal circumstances, socioeconomic status, and levels of education that influence their perceptions. Limitations of the study include: the size of the sample, and a lack of ethnic diversity.

Tully, Meg. "Trainwreck feminism: women, comedy and postfeminist culture." Diss., University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6315.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation develops the theoretical framework of “trainwreck feminism.” Forwarded by contemporary women in comedy like Mindy Kaling, Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer, and Amy Schumer, trainwreck feminists adopt the trope of the trainwreck—excessive in need, sex, and madness—to demonstrate the disastrous consequences of growing up in postfeminist culture that both insists women are finally liberated and continues to police their choices. Engaging ongoing debates about whether postfeminism is over since feminism is becoming a status symbol for celebrities and public figures, I argue that postfeminism remains a powerful cultural force, and women in comedy are some of its most vocal critics. Trainwreck feminism exposes the misogyny at the core of postfeminist culture, while arguing that feminist activism is still needed. Trainwreck feminism is reflective of a larger rejection of postfeminist culture, a contradictory moment that celebrates feminism’s achievements while insisting the movement is outdated. Trainwreck feminism represents a larger re-politicization of feminism in pop culture. Each chapter examines a different comic and the specific branch of postfeminism they undermine: Mindy Kaling and the postfeminist life cycle, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer and commodity feminism, and Amy Schumer and choice feminism. Ultimately, these women imbue the trainwreck with true feminist potential, pointing a finger at postfeminist culture as a source of women’s madness. Because they are cautionary tales, trainwrecks can highlight the unspoken rules and expectations of femininity. While comedy can have a fairly nasty, depoliticizing relationship with feminism, often turning feminism into a lifestyle or label devoid of political activism, I argue that some contemporary comic texts are actively politicized, inspiring viewers to critique and change the world around them. They do so by appropriating particular vernacular rhetorics that appeal to younger, millennial audiences and using it to demonstrate how postfeminism has failed women. That is, each comic I examine leverages postfeminist sensibilities in order to critique and undermine them, engaging in a trainwreck feminism that highlights the contradictions, absurdities, and misogyny at the heart of postfeminist culture.

The course of this work stemmed from clinical experiences and focuses on reports of women who become ill and offer themselves in sacrifice, reissuing malaises resulted from libidinal excesses that mobilize them, which, in a certain sense, evoke the question of how the morbidity of such state of suffering provides them with a special place in relation to the Other. The objective of this research was to investigate psychic subsidies that support this type of operation, as well as to consider the subjective effects of the maternal figure in these women s adult lives. To this end, we find in the Lacanian concept of jouissance, extracted from the Freudian notion of death drive, the theoretical resource with which we can move towards the modalities of feminine jouissance. The perspective adopted here combines relevant topics that are intertwined so as to turn paradigmatic the operation of aspects in the instinctual body that may be involved when we think about the conditions of the subject s ex(s)istence through an approach focused on the quantum formulas about sexualization, on the enigma of sexual difference, and on the transmission of this legacy whose foundation is based on the Real, which radically changes the perspective of direction of the analytic treatment

Using a modified, systematic literature review I will examine issues of subjectivity, gender, and differnce in relation to psychoanalytic feminist theory. Psychoanalytic feminism evolved out of a reaction to classical psychoanalytic theory. In particular, the works of Chodorow (1978), Kristeva, (1977, 1989) and Benjamin (1988) were used. The literature revew will discuss the development of these theoretical perspectives and the understanding of subjectivity, gender and difference in psychoanalytic feminism and the implication this has for clinical practice.

Abstract:
This thesis examines representations of the intimate as experienced by female protagonists, through expressions related to the heart, the soul and the body, in a comparative study of novels by French women writers from the 19th century and the present day. The corpus consists of seven novels : Ourika by Claire de Duras (1822), Lélia by George Sand (1833 & 1839), Monsieur Vénus. Roman matérialiste by Rachilde (1884), Femme nue, femme noire by Calixthe Beyala (2003), Vous parler d’elle by Claire Castillon (2004), Le Cœur cousu by Carole Martinez (2007), and Mon cœur à l’étroit by Marie NDiaye (2007). As a starting point, the thesis provides an extensive literature survey of existing research on the intimate as well as an introduction of the feminist and psychanalytic approaches underpinning the subsequent analyses, which are conducted in two parts, according to the personal and relational dimensions of the intimate. The theories of Beauvoir, Kristeva and Lacan offer perspectives on the intimate experience of women characters which is conveyed in literary imagery as the desire of the Other, and which is oppressed in a patriarchal symbolic order, although an aesthetic with specific narrative techniques related to women’s experience of the intimate is identified in most of the novels. These features include blurring and fragmentation of spatiotemporality, a marked intricacy of narrative voice, proximate first-person narrators, and the development of themes such as the writing of the body, sensed as a container. A discrepancy is noticed between the dominating androcentric posture of the heroines which is found in underlying discourse, and the sensorial dimension of their experience. This leads to a sublimation of body and sexuality in the romantic novels, a masochistic exaltation of the body and pain in the decadent novel and a psychotic and paranoid state in the novels from present day literature. The themes of female sacrifice and of death and denial of the body are very strong throughout the corpus. Relationships within the family are explored, including the mother-daughter relationships that are emphasised in the recent novels but not in those from the 19th century. Family structure, Christian culture and patriarchal, hierarchical social organisation are analysed as grounds for women’s alienation in the novels. The issue of perversion, which is striking in the novels on several different levels, is described as a transgression which involves the reader.

Abstract:
In this essay, I argue that issues of voyeurism and scopophilia raised in Laura Mulvey’s early essay, “Visual Pleasure in Narrative Cinema,” are closely related to the social and economic shifts which occurred during the post-war period. Specifically, I argue that Mulvey’s essay articulates a particular kind of formal technique associated with what she calls “non-narrative scopophilia,” a kind of long-take shot that is utilized to great effect by Alfred Hitchcock in two of his later films, Rear Window (1955) and Psycho (1960). I argue that these shots represent a disruption to the smooth functioning of the classical Hollywood model of narrative and gender ideology in the post-war period tied closely to the changing economic realities of the period. I further argue that such a disruption is closely related to a new model of consumerism that emerges during this period.

Abstract:
‘Bitch: the Politics of Angry Women’ investigates the scholarly challenges and strengths in re theorising popular culture and feminism. It traces the connections and schisms between academic feminism and the feminism that punctuates popular culture. By tracing a series of specific bitch trajectories, this thesis accesses an archaeology of women’s battle to gain power. Feminism is a large and brawling paradigm that struggles to incorporate a diversity of feminist voices. This thesis joins the fight. It argues that feminism is partly constituted through popular cultural representations. The separation between the academy and popular culture is damaging theoretically and politically. Academic feminism needs to work with the popular, as opposed to undermining or dismissing its relevancy. Cultural studies provides the tools necessary to interpret popular modes of feminism. It allows a consideration of the discourses of race, gender, age and class that plait their way through any construction of feminism. I do not present an easy identity politics. These bitches refuse simple narratives. The chapters clash and interrogate one another, allowing difference its own space. I mine a series of sites for feminist meanings and potential, ranging across television, popular music, governmental politics, feminist books and journals, magazines and the popular press. The original contribution to knowledge that this thesis proffers is the refusal to demarcate between popular feminism and academic feminism. A new space is established in which to dialogue between the two.

This work begins with a clinical case, so its method is mainly clinical and falls within the tradition of fundamental psychopathology, a discipline which seeks a bailout of human subjectivity, believing that since the creation of the General Psychopathology proposed by Jasper (1913), the human subjectivity has been deprecated instead of an objectivist psychopathology that aims to observation of human suffering through technological mechanisms for classification. The clinical method is the one adopted by the Fundamental Psychopathology, so psychoanalysis is more suitable for such discipline. Within this theoretical-clinical, this work refers to the involvement of obsessive neurosis in a woman. Such manifestation finds little support in the current theory, enabling the importance of this production. The construction of the narrative of the cited case reveals theoretical, clinical and transferential barriers, which the author conducts a possible detailed study the most. The desire, its cause and its impossible of accomplishment were brought to the fore, as well as the constitution of the feminine in rescuing the eternal question: anatomy is destiny or not?

Abstract:
The Victorian era paved the way for the emancipation of the modern British woman. The women who fought for the parliamentary vote, especially those who were imprisoned and experienced the torture of forcible feeding, eventually won their cause. Women who opposed enfranchisement did so for their own reasons. Both sides of the suffrage campaign claimed the majority was on their side and struggled to prove it. This thesis argues that those women who opposed were a subaltern group and compares them with the colonised subjects of the British Empire. The emancipation of women ran against the interests of the state which treated the cause as an insurgent movement. The political leaders spared no effort to thwart the liberation of women and the middle-and upper-class Anti-Suffrage women sided with ruling class interests. This work divides women into three sub-sections; resistance, colonised public and collaborators. Eliza Lynn Linton, Flora Shaw, Janet Hogarth and Gertrude Bell are well known middle-class Victorian women for whom the emancipation was of more benefit than opposition. The study throws a fresh look at these women by tying the notion of the collaborative elite with the State's exploitation of the intellectual subaltern. Linton, Shaw, Hogarth and Bell are studied in detail as case studies for this theory. Through the textual analysis of selected works, published articles, public and private correspondence, available diaries, biographies and autobiographies it emerges that although these women were ardent 'Antis' in public they were feminists in private. The thesis explains the reasons behind their public opposition to the emancipation of women.

Abstract:
This research builds upon Islamic feminism as an alternative mean to the typical Western way of perceiving feminism, when looking into the situation of Muslim women in Sweden through a qualitative field study. Moreover, this is linked to the discussion of gender equality and diversity which is on the agenda in the West due to contemporary migration flows. Semi-structured interviews are conducted for the purpose of highlighting Muslim women's own religious and cultural experiences concerning identity, freedom and gender roles, which are later connected to the academic debate regarding women in Islam and Islamic feminism. Additionally, interpretations of often discussed verses from the Qur'an on this topic are made during the interviews, also connected to the core of this research which is to explore the possibility of an identity formation with feminism and Islam coexisting among the interviewed women in Sweden, constituting the research gap. Hayward's theory of de-facing power is further applied to the findings and examples illustrate a tension between the different value systems when comparing the women's earlier experiences to current ones in Sweden, but that feminist understandings are visible and practiced to some extent. Summarized remarks include that further research is necessary and particularly with more interviewees which would enable more of a generalization, yet underlining that the situation among and for Muslim women differs. Nevertheless, it is through facilitating to meet each other and involve women in the society it is possible to achieve progress of a mutual understanding.

Nwokocha, Sandra Chinyeaka. "Feminism in twenty-first-century Nigerian novels by women." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7310/.

Full text
Abstract:
Scholarship on twenty-first century Nigerian female-authored novels has long been dominated by womanist readings, regardless of the fact that these modern narratives represent feminism in strong terms. The readings often subsume subversive femininity within non-aggressive liberation, resulting in an insufficient narrative of the intricacies of the novels of the period. This thesis challenges such representations by proposing subversion as the hallmark of twenty- first century Nigerian female-authored novels through a textual analysis of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun, Sefi Atta’s Everything Good Will Come and Kaine Agary’s Yellow Yellow. Through a gynocentric approach, the analysis of the novels foregrounds a feminist view of domination, resistance and solidarity, espousing the premise that the contemporary heroines are understandably rebellious in asserting female agency. The thesis draws three fundamental conclusions: that the feminist paradigm is useful to the comprehension of the nuances of twenty-first century Nigerian female-authored novels, that dissidence is a remarkable feature of contemporary texts, and that this revolutionary tendency contrasts with the conservative attitudes of the previous epoch.
