Abstract:
This article examines a broadly accepted assumption that presence of women personnel makes police forces more gender-just, and makes an attempt to study in the context of Delhi Police, how the inclusion of women personnel impacts gendered hierarchies and patriarchal social norms operative within the space of a thana. Drawing on ethnographic research, I argue that the day-to-day practices and relations between men and women personnel in a police station do not give out a picture of a gender-just institutional set-up. Further, I argue that abuse and humiliation of women personnel within the thana is not something totally disconnected from what the institution’s official attitude towards women is, as could be read from various public campaigns of Delhi Police that infantilize and objectify women while talking of ‘protective’ men as role models. In this context, it is argued that merely inducting women into the institution without an active feminist practice against essentialization of women would not bring emancipatory outcomes.

Abstract:
Presenteeism is the term used to describe going in to work even with a health problem. The phenomenon has been identified as one prior factor in sickness absence and, accordingly, the better it is understood, the better will be the prevention strategies. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of presenteeism (the ability to concentrate on work and to complete work despite a health problem) in the association between psychosocial factors at work and common mental disorders (CMD). This cross-sectional study included 1218 nursing personnel at a public hospital in Brazil. Structural equation modelling was performed. The sample comprised mostly women (85.4%), and the mean age was 44.1 (SD = 11.3; range: 24–70) years. Prevalence of presenteeism was 32.8%. Among presenteeist workers (n = 400), a relationship was observed between presenteeism and higher CMD scores. Furthermore, being able to concentrate on work even with a health problem mediated the relationship between social support and CMD and between psychological demands and CMD. Working when sick impairs both the work and the worker’s health. Interventions designed to improve working conditions and interpersonal relations can be effective strategies against presenteeism.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective Exposures at hairdressers’ work have been reported to lead to an increased risk of several health outcomes. The present study aimed to investigate the relations between occupational exposures and respiratory symptoms and lung function among hairdressers in Iran. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study to compare potential respiratory effects among 140 women working as hairdressers to such effects among 140 women working as office workers (administrative personnel). Both groups worked in Shiraz, Iran. Respiratory symptoms were assessed by a standard respiratory questionnaire. The questionnaire also inquired about substances used and workspace conditions, including ventilation type. Lung function levels were measured by spirometry. Results Respiratory symptoms, including cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness were significantly more frequent in hairdressers compared to the reference group (p < 0.05). After controlling for potential confounders, hairdressers had a prevalence ratio (PR) of 2.18 (95% CI 1.26–3.77) for cough, 9.59 (95% CI 1.004–91.73) for wheezing, 2.06 (95% CI 1.25–3.39) for shortness of breath, and 3.31 (95% CI 1.84–5.97) for chest tightness compared to the reference group. Lung function parameters (including VC, FVC, and FEV1) were significantly reduced in hairdressers (p < 0.001). Absence of air conditioning predicted greater reduction in lung function (p < 0.05) in the exposed. Decrease in FVC with normal FEV1/FVC in the exposed group suggested existence of restrictive lung function. Conclusions This study provides evidence of increased prevalence of respiratory symptoms and restrictive lung function impairment among hairdressers in Iran.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the directions and mechanisms of adapting the social policy of Belarus to the demographic, migration, communication and technological challenges of modern society. The purpose of the article is to search for social policy mechanisms aimed at developing human potential and stimulating the social activity of citizens. The author analyses the directions of the state’s social policy in the absence of the reproduction of labor resources, an increase in the demographic burden on the ablebodied population, an uneven distribution of labor resources, the emigration of skilled personnel, growth in automation and robotization of production, and a growing need to build effective communication between the government and the population. The article provides an extensive analysis of statistical information, sociological research data, the legislative framework, methods and social technologies of social policy. As a result of the study the author comes to the conclusion that it is necessary to search for new mechanisms for implementing social policy in various fields. Therefore, in the field of demography, it is advisable to search for indirect measures to increase social guarantees for women in order to stimulate fertility, and transform the pension system in order to reduce the demographic burden on the working population. In the field of migration, it is advisable to take government action to prevent the outflow of highly qualified specialists abroad and to return of students who have received education abroad. In the field of social and labor relations existing personnel technologists should be improved and objective methods for evaluating the effectiveness of employees based on a competency-based approach should be introduced. In the field of communication between society and the state it is necessary to inform the public about the current state policy and to organize public discussions of the state initiatives before making them.

Abstract:
The Chongqing Bureau of Public Health, established shortly after the Nationalists relocated to the wartime capital, faced frequent air raids, rampant inflation, and acute personnel shortages. Still it accomplished an astonishing amount of work, demonstrating its commitment to public health as a barometer of modernity, national stability, and political fitness. The Bureau also treated male and female bodies differently, institutionalizing gender roles through its public health administration. This paper illustrates differences between medical care for men and women, arguing that Chongqing health officials’ myopic focus on maternal issues when discussing women’s healthcare, their failure to address highly skewed gender ratios in the patient reports and vaccination statistics that their office received on a monthly basis, and the relatively late opening of the city’s most substantial maternal health facilities, all point to male-centric priorities within the administration. Military health took priority not only because of the war, but because soldiers’ health conditions and facilities were so appallingly dismal. Thus, wartime health conditions reveal the continued haunting of modern China’s great specter, the “Sick Man of East Asia,” and two types of disease in the wartime capital: the Nationalist state, politically diseased, failed to protect its civilians and soldiers from common diseases.

Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to investigate the expressed levels of job satisfaction of dental assistants working in Brazil and whether there are relationships among professional formation standards, workplace relations and job satisfaction. An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out with a calculated sample of 443 dental assistants. A questionnaire was developed for this purpose and its validity was verified in a pilot study. The questionnaire provided data for socioeconomic and demographic categorization and identified the variables that could be correlated to professional satisfaction. Job satisfaction was stratified into satisfaction and no satisfaction. All participants signed an informed consent form. Data were analyzed using SPSS software, version 13.0. Pearson's chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were performed. Among the 443 participants, 94.6% were women, 72.7% were aged between 21 and 40 years and 65.0% were single. Over half had 37 or more months of job experience and had completed their course at a public institution. The majority earned between US$141.00 and US$190.00 per month. Job satisfaction was mentioned by 81.5% of the dental personnel. It was found that most subjects were satisfied with their job, and that the level satisfaction is influenced negatively by salary, workplace, workload and dentist's personality.

Abstract:
All women had equal rights to reproductive health, no exception for commercial sex workers (PSK), because PSK was a very risky job for various diseases, among others, gonorrhea, herpes, fungal infections, syphilis, vaginitis, ulcers, sex lice, and HIV/AIDS. However, in reality, not all PSKs got their rights to reproductive health. The Government had issued a regulation related to reproductive rights, namely Government Regulation Nr. 61 of 2014 on Reproductive Health. This research used the socio-legal approach with the analytical- descriptive specification. The primary data were obtained from interviews with the Head of Public Health Center (Puskesmas) of Gedongtengen, doctors, midwives, coordinator of commercial sex workers association, AIDS Prevention Commission, the Head of Infectious Disease Control Section of the Health Office of Yogyakarta City, hotel owners and commercial sex workers (PSK). Secondary data were obtained from books and legal materials having relations with the research. The data gathered were then qualitatively analyzed. The results of the research at Puskesmas of Gedongtengen showed that PSK had obtained legal protection by the contents of articles of the prevailing legislation and the Minister of Health’s regulation. Puskesmas of Gedongtengen had reproductive health services programs such as clinical sexual services of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and voluntary counseling and testing (VCT). If by an examination a PSK was found HIV/AIDS positive, she would be referred to a hospital having facilities by her needs. On the one hand, the supporting factors of the implementation of legal protection to commercial sex workers regarding reproductive health included affordable costs of the Puskesmas, availability of competent health personnel, adequate facilities, and infrastructure, cross-sectoral cooperation, PSK involvement in the services provided. On the other hand, the inhibiting factors were the absence of specific legislative regulations on PSK, low-level education that led to lack of health examination awareness, a lot of the customers that refused to use condoms and the insufficient availability of skilled health personnel.

Laplante, Benoît. "The well-being of families in Canada’s future." Canadian Studies in Population 45, no. 1-2 (May 3, 2018): 24. http://dx.doi.org/10.25336/csp29376.

Full text
Abstract:
The author argues that the well-being of families in Canada’s future is uncertain because families are losing the central position that was traditionally theirs. Most of the changes that occurred in and around families over the last third of the 20th century came from changes in values (from survival to personal development, from collectivity-oriented to individual-oriented), in gender relations (rising education, labour force participation, and economic independence of women), and in the legal framework that deals with family life. Such changes are still having an impact on families and this impact will likely not diminish. But more than anything else, Canadian society is moving towards a model in which immigration rather than reproduction is the main source of population growth, thus reducing the importance of the family for the development of policies. This, and the increasing political importance given to environmental issues, might further displace the family as a priority for policymaking and the allocation of public resources, and thus impair the future well-being of families.L’auteur soutient que le bien-être des familles canadiennes des familles est loin d’être assuré à long terme parce que la famille, en tant qu’institution, perd aujourd’hui la position centrale qui était traditionnellement la sienne.

Abstract:
Purpose. Population assessment of the quality and effectiveness of medical services, as well as the activities of medical organizations working with the child population in comparison with 2016–2017.Materials and methods. Sociological research in polyclinics of four large health care institutions of Yakutsk of the compared groups is carried out: Polyclinic No. 1–100 respondents, City hospital No. 2–60 respondents, City hospital No. 3–80 respondents, medical center of Yakutsk — 100 respondents. The study was conducted in 2016–2017. during the study, 340 respondents were interviewed, including 87% of women and 13% of men (the survey was conducted among parents and other legal representatives of minor patients).Results. The article deals with the issues related to the implementation in the activities of public health institutions of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) quality standards and evaluation of the results of their implementation in terms of patient awareness of the service (availability, openness of information), comfort conditions of service, waiting time for the service, the attitude of staff to patients (courtesy, goodwill), competence of staff and the overall level of satisfaction with the service provided. Despite the fact that more than 60% of respondents are aware of the functioning of the official websites of medical institutions, only 15.8% of respondents used information about the services and how to get them posted on them. At the same time, three-quarters of respondents are aware of the possibility of remote appointment by phone or Internet. However, only 18.6% of them took advantage of these opportunities, and 56% did not resort to them. The greatest criticism is caused by the lack of medical report on the patients’ state of health –60.8% of dissatisfied surveyed parents chose this criterion. More than 40% of complaints are due to the fact that pediatricians have not given recommendations for diagnosis and treatment. More than half of the survived participants (54.5%) at the recent visit to a medical institution, received a medical service on the day of making an appointment. The average waiting time to visit a paediatrician is 76 minutes. Two-thirds of respondents complain about the lack of available sitting chairs. Almost half of the respondents indicate the lack of drinking water in medical institutions, Almost 80% of respondents are generally satisfied with the medical services received in the clinics of Yakutsk. More than 70% of respondents are ready to recommend their clinic to friends, acquaintances and colleagues.Conclusion. According to the results of the study, it was concluded that the organizers of health care need to readjust appropriately some management procedures of the organizations, in particular: patients’ attendance by specialists, public relations, personnel management, facilities and resources, in connection with the visitor’s basic rebukes.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Disrespectful and abusive treatment of women by health care providers during the process of childbirth at health facility is an international problem. There is a lack of data on disrespect and abuse of women during the process of childbirth at health facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of disrespect and abuse of women during the process of childbirth at health facilities in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods The PRISMA guideline protocol was followed to write the systematic review and meta-analysis. Published studies were searched from Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Maternal and infant care, science direct, and PsycINFO. Articles were accessed by three reviewers (ZY, BT and AA) using the following key terms, “attitude of health personnel” AND “delivery obstetrics*/nursing” OR “maternity care” AND “disrespect” OR “abuse” OR “professional misconduct” AND “parturition” AND “prevalence” AND “professional-patient relations” AND “Sub-Saharan Africa”. Additional articles were retrieved by cross referencing of reference. The heterogeneity of studies were weighed using Cochran’s Q test and I2 test statistics. Publication bias was assessed by Egger’s test. Results Thirty three studies met the inclusion and included in this systematic review and meta–analysis of disrespect and abuse of women during the process of childbirth at health facilities. The pooled prevalence of disrespect and abuse women during the process of childbirth at health facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa was 44.09% (95% CI: 29.94–58.24).Particularly physical abuse was 15.77% (95% CI: 13.38–18.15), non-confidential care was 16.87% (95% CI: 14.49–19.24), abandonment was 16.86% (95% CI: 13.88–19.84) and detention was 4.81% (95% CI: 3.96–5.67). Conclusion In this study disrespect and abuse of women during the process of childbirth at health facilities are high compared with other studies, particularly non-confidential care and abandonment his high compared with other studies. This study points out that the ministry of health, health care providers, maternal health experts shall due attention to women’s right during the process of childbirth at health facilities.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Public Relations Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2011.
This study investigated the professional status of female public relations practitioners in Rwandan public and private institutions by using direct managers as a focal point to get their perspectives about their staff. The study used a structured questionnaire to get information from the managers in public relations or communication departments. While different authors such as Aldoory & Toth, (2002); Wilcox and Cameron (2006:35) and Hon (1995) indicate that the public relations industry is feminised to the extent of 70 percent, the results of this study present it otherwise. The findings reveal that the trend of feminisation in Rwandan public relations industry is not on the same speed as the one in the industry worldwide. This means that based on the findings from different studies worldwide, females are represented by a big number in the public relations industry than males do. Furthermore, there is a gender gap in terms of responsibilities whereby women are more clustered in technical tasks rather than managerial ones. Although Rwanda has opted to empower women in its reconstruction process, they are still affected by the legacies of indigenous culture in terms of stereotypes associated with them and salary gaps which shows that the promotion of a female professional continue to be a problem in some organisations. Considering the research results, the public relations industry in Rwanda is still a new field and hence its practitioners' professional status especially women is not well depicted. However, the results show that female practitioners are able to offer good services to their customers due to their innate caring character and professionalism. The results recommend that local high learning institutions should include public relations courses in their program to ensure long run availability of public relations professionals. In addition the Rwanda private sector is encouraged to open up public relations agencies which will contribute to the improvement of customer care in Rwanda. Finally, the researcher recommends that public relations activities should be well planned in organisations to avoid confusion with other related fields such as marketing, for instance. The researcher further recommends that advance studies should be conducted to engage in the evaluation of the implementation of gender promotion laws and its efforts in various organisations.

Abstract:
This research utilized a 1994 study administered by Marilyn Kern-Foxworth, et al. that examined the roles and status of black women in public relations, using individual and organizational discriminates.A survey of 46 questions was administered to 58 women over a seven-week period. The results offered the current profile of a black female practitioner, and suggested that both her role and status are closer to that of communication technician (low-level management) than to expert prescriber (high-level management). The study offered data not included in the original research, such as practitioner salary, region of practice, and professional affiliation.

Abstract:
Previous research has shown that although women outnumber men in public relations, women hold inferior positions, are paid less, and possess less credibility in their organization.Gender and roles in public relations has become a common focus of research for the public relations scholar; however, very few studies have used Q-methodology to gauge attitudes on this subject.Using Q-methodology, 21 public relations practitioners from a variety of organizations in 3 states were asked to sort 48 statements concerning attitudes about gender and roles in the field. Two factors emerged from the results and were labeled: Initiators and Generalists. Results indicated gender was no longer a factor in what roles the practitioner played and roles in public relations were blurring. It suggests further research should focus on differences between generalists and specialists rather than managers and technicians.

Abstract:
AbstractBased on six months of ethnographic research in the maternity clinic of a major Athens public hospital in 2017, this chapter employs the conceptual lens of “hospitality” to analyze relationships that formed around the care of pregnant migrants arriving in Greece since 2015. Permanent health-care personnel, mostly midwives, are the hosts; guests include migrant women, NGO workers that accompany them to the hospital, Greek Roma maternity patients, obstetrics residents, and the native ethnographer herself. The focus is on pregnant migrants; the other guests provide comparative fodder to flesh out the subjectivity of the hosts. Through an ethnographic reconstruction of the microcosm of the clinic as a space of care, sovereignty, and everyday life, the chapter takes on two theoretical issues: the problem of scale and the argument that the hierarchical character of hospitality is incompatible with a rights-based framework. Critiques to the use of the host-guest trope as a frame for the analysis of relations between migrants and receiving states and societies are well heeded. Yet I demonstrate that guest-host dynamics are very much operative in the interaction between state-employed, permanent health-care personnel and migrants. My analysis highlights the limits and capacities of hospitality’s scalar transpositions, as well as the critical potential of hospitality as a lens that elucidates how legally guaranteed migrants’ rights are accessed and granted in practice; hospitality and rights thus emerge as complementary rather than opposing structural and explanatory frameworks.
