In order to study weight concerns and eating disorders in women tennis players, 107 women tennis players and 26 women’s tennis coaches from colleges across the U.S. responded to questionnaires relating to weight concern, body image, and abnormal eating. When evaluating drawings of female figures, players and coaches both considered the ideal body shape to be smaller than the healthiest one. Most players had normal weight, eating habits, and self-esteem; however, they also exhibited noticeable concern about their weight and appearance. Change in grip strength over 30 trials was documented in two samples of junior college tennis players to assess possible fatigue. Eight men and eight women performed 30 maximum-grip strength tests with 25-sec. rests between trials. Significant positive correlations (.38 and .53 for men and women) were observed between grip strength and trials. In practical terms, grip strength did not change over 30 trials in these tennis players. The data suggested that the repetitive gripping patterns used by these players in tennis play resulted in consistent maximum-grip strengths across 30 trials.

Abstract:
AbstractYou see it everywhere—the ponytail hairstyle. Before the influencers Kim Kardashian West and Kylie Jenner, there were Barbie dolls and the movie stars Sandra Dee and Brigitte Bardot, and popstars Madonna and Beyoncé. Tennis star Serena Williams often sports a ponytail, and among women World Cup soccer players, countless. In this introduction, I outline a theoretical approach with which to show how and why the ponytail has become the hallmark of the female athlete and a total social phenomenon that answers to the experiential totality of modernity. I distinguish my approach from that of critical theorists who often argue that gender and femininities are all about social power relations and female subordination. Instead, I draw on multiple cultural theories about hair, bodies, and icons to argue that a total social fact like the ponytail is only iconic, imitated, and useful if it is polyvocal. A cultural sociology shows how the ponytail, as a material and corporal object, is imbued with codes, narratives, and myths that allow its wearers to access public culture and social inequalities in deeply personal, even existential ways.

This chapter discusses the ways three important women shaped professional tennis leading up to and into the first decade of Open Tennis. Gladys Heldman published World Tennis, the leading tennis periodical of the time, and helped popularize both professional tennis and professional women players. Heldman also helped found the women’s professional tour by offering players contracts and tournament scheduling before stepping aside to allow for the well-funded and hugely popular Virginia Slims Tour. Billie Jean King came to lead the women professionals in the newly formed player’s union called the Women’s Tennis Association. Abstract:
This paper examines the gender wage gap in professional sports using a pooled cross-section of professional tennis players across the years 2011-2017. The dependent variable is the prize money earned by the top fifty male and top fifty female ranked tennis players throughout the world. This prize money is measured in 2017 real dollar value. The independent variables include: number of tournaments played, age, rank differentiation, gender, country and WTA/ATP score. Gender inequality is measured by determining the wage gap shown through the mean prize money earned by the professional tennis players from 2011-2017. While prize money for men and women has recently become equal in the Grand Slam tournaments, there is evidence to show that women's prize money is considerably lower in the less-publicized tournaments. Results of the ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions suggest that there is evidence for a gender-related pay disparity in professional tennis due to a number of statistically significant variables including WTA/ATP score (+), age (+), country (+) and the gender (-) and year (+) dummies.

Abstract This chapter begins by looking at the formation of the Virginia Slims Circuit, which provided women tennis players a viable league for consistent competition and allowed them to make livelihoods through their sport. Meanwhile, Althea Gibson would spend the rest of her life cobbling together a livelihood through gigs. These include being the sports consultant for the Essex County Park Commission; the teaching professional and program director at Valley View Racquet Club; and the new national director and technical advisor of Pepsi’s Mobile Tennis Program. Gibson also served as the State Athletic Commissioner in New Jersey. She was the first African American nominated to serve in that position and the first woman, too. The chapter then considers Gibson’s support for the women’s rights movement and her candidacy for the New Jersey State Senate. Neither Gibson’s physical fitness nor her political platform were enough to win the State Senate race.

Abstract:
The second chapter deals with two individual sports. Boxing and tennis might appear strange bedfellows, but as well as being primarily individual sports, they are also united by their transatlantic nature. The flamboyant figures of boxer Jack Johnson and tennis player Suzanne Lenglen were famous on both sides of the Atlantic. Johnson lived it up in nightclubs in both Paris and London, Lenglen played host to American film stars on the French Riviera. Boxing’s Americanism is traced in the writings and life of Cravan that culminated in the fight against Johnson in Barcelona, which is then refracted through the fascination of American journal The Soil for both boxing and Cravan. Tennis was particularly associated with modernist architecture, with players featuring in books written by Le Corbusier, Adolf Behne and Sigfried Giedion. It was also a rare example of a sport where the women’s game attracted as much, if not more, attention than that of the men. This, I contend, caused problems for Le Corbusier, who preferred to concentrate on the geometrical court and the anonymous male players that he includes in his Urbanisme, rather than the glamour and fashion of Lenglen, a woman dressed by the couturier Jean Patou and who served as an inspiration for a Jean Cocteau piece for the Ballets Russes.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter details how Althea Gibson’s sabbatical from tennis further marked her as a social outlier in the 1950s. Again and again, Gibson found herself either ahead of or behind the times as well as failing to meet other people’s ideas of where she belonged, what she should say, and what she should do as a Black woman, a sports amateur, and an athlete who was steadily moving past her prime. Her foray into acting was the first in a series of impromptu engagements in her improvised journey. Like sports, the film industry appeared to be a cultural site where African Americans were getting over racial barriers to stride toward integration. The chapter then considers the questions that arose in Black media about Gibson’s loyalty to and self-identification with African Americans following the publication of her autobiography, I Always Wanted to Be Somebody (1958). The only part of the race that Gibson was concerned about, it seemed, was tennis players, and she felt that she had done all that she could do to help them. The chapter also looks at the release of the film The Horse Soldiers (1959), which tested Gibson’s influence as a modern symbol of African Americans and the duality of her life. She began her career as a professional tennis player in the fall of 1959.

Abstract This chapter describes Althea Gibson’s experiences competing in tennis tournaments from 1951 to 1953, as well as her continued struggles with sexism and racism. These tournaments include the Caribbean Championship, the National Indoors at the Seventh Regiment Armory, and the Good Neighbor Tournament. The exclusivity of Miami Beach made Gibson’s entry in the Good Neighbor a landmark moment for her chroniclers in the African-American press. Being a Black woman on the White tennis circuit gave Gibson social capital but not money or independence. The chapter then turns to Gibson’s debut at Wimbledon, the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Other tournaments that Gibson participated in during this time include the Pennsylvania State Tennis Tournament at the famed Merion Cricket Club in Haverford and the Eastern Grass Court Championships. While Gibson’s status as the premier Black tennis player in the world earned her no latitude in academics at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College (FAMC), her fame was still rewarded with special treatment elsewhere. Gibson experienced personal disappointment as she did not succeed in amateur tennis as quickly as she had hoped.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter focuses on Althea Gibson’s professional golf career, which roused her spirit from the depths of disappointment brought on by the failure of her pro-tennis career. The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) was the only professional sports organization for women, offering regular tournaments, prizes, and purses. By playing on the circuit, she could do what she had always wanted: play sports for money. The chapter then considers African Americans’ relationship with golf, the last American sport to admit Blacks on the elite level. Black women had played golf across the country for decades, forming clubs of their own and competing in events organized by the United Golfers Association (UGA), which established a women’s division in 1930. Despite this feature, Black women still faced sexism and barriers to being made to feel as if they fully belonged in the association. Gibson thus earned positive press in the African American media as she embarked on her golf career. Disappointment, though, soon followed for Gibson as her golf career did not match the success that she had known in tennis. The chapter then looks at her marriage with Will Darben, begun in 1965, and the publication of her second memoir, So Much to Live For, in 1968.
