Abstract:
In the wood industry, determination of the moisture content (mc) with a highaccuracy is of great importance. The green mc is important for optimisation of thewood drying process at sawmills, whereas the mc of dried boards is of interest for thefurther processing and final use of the boards. In the first publication in this thesis, which is a technical report written in Swedish, different measuring techniques withtheir own pros and cons are discussed. A total of 13 different measurement principlesare discussed, focusing on the ability to measure mc in the range of 7-18%. The resultsuggests that

Treatments with environment-friendly, biodegradable tall oil are known to reduce the capillary water uptake of pine sapwood greatly, but despite the good results achieved there have been two problems that limit the use of tall oil for wood protection, the large amount of oil needed and the tendency for the oil to exude from the wood. Abstract:
The purpose of this research work is to investigate the relationship between humidity and tone in musical instruments. A basic hypothesis that motivates this work is that normal seasonal variations in relative humidity are thought to alter the tone of instruments constructed from wood. These changes in tone are believed to be due to changes in the dimensions and material properties of an instrument that are a result of wooden components absorbing and adsorbing water in equilibrium with their ambient environmental conditions. To investigate this hypothesis an experiment was conducted with a

It can succeed to improve the wood utilization ratio and broaden the applications of domestic wood, but the remaining challenge of compressed wood stems from its dimensional instability. To address this issue, this study applied a post-heat treatment to decrease the internal stress of woods and further maintain its original dimensions. Abstract:
Nanoindentation is a method of contacting a material whose mechanical properties are unknown with another material whose properties are known. Nanoindentation has the advantage of being able to probe a material’s microstructure while being sensitive enough to detect variations in mechanical properties. However, nanoindentation has some limitations as a testing technique due to the specific formation and structure of some biomaterials. The main objective of this research is to identify any factors that influence the nanoindentation measurement of wood cell walls (a typical biomaterial). The fun

Abstract:
This research focuses on the investigation of the mechanical properties of plantation Eucalyptus nitens timber and the understanding of its underlying failure mechanism above and below the fibre saturation point both experimentally and numerically. Fast-growing eucalypts are now considered potential building materials; one such re-source is plantation Eucalyptus nitens. To use such a resource as structural or engineered timber, that is to establish design codes and specifications, its compressive and bending strengths need to be studied as they are two important mechanical properties for str
