Liu, Peiyan. "Improvement of bio-oil stability in wood pyrolysis process." Thesis, Aston University, 2003. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/10065/.

Full text
Abstract:
Pyrolysis is one of several thermochemical technologies that convert solid biomass into more useful and valuable bio-fuels. Pyrolysis is thermal degradation in the complete or partial absence of oxygen. Under carefully controlled conditions, solid biomass can be converted to a liquid known as bie-oil in 75% yield on dry feed. Bio-oil can be used as a fuel but has the drawback of having a high level of oxygen due to the presence of a complex mixture of molecular fragments of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin polymers. Also, bio-oil has a number of problems in use including high initial viscos

Abstract:
Previous studies on wood instability have identified some wood basic properties which influence the timber distortion and shape changes while the wood is losing or gaining moisture. These properties include wood anisotropic shrinkage, equilibrium moisture content (EMC) in both desorption and adsorption, fibre saturation point (FSP) and water diffusion coefficient. This study investigated the stability related wood properties and their variations within the stems of the New Zealand grown radiata pine trees. This thesis describes a study on the stability capacity and lateral bracing force of wood beam-columns and metal plate connected (MPC) wood truss assemblies. A user-friendly computer program, SATA, was developed based on the finite element method (FEM). Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) has been the most common forestry species in UK plantations for many decades. It is generally fast grown in short rotation, which has implications for quality. The harvested timber has a number of end-use applications. Of these, sawn construction grade timber is at the high end of market value. Currently, under one third of home grown sawn timber processed by sawmills achieves the required C16 or higher grading for construction class timber. In the first study, mode-I fracture testing was used to compare the thermal stability of polyurethane (PUR) and resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) wood adhesives. Bonded specimens for both adhesives were subjected to prolonged thermal exposure, and fracture testing was subsequently conducted after re-equilibration to standard test conditions. It was found that both PUR and RF suffered a significant fracture energy loss after heat treatment, and that RF was more thermall

Lateral collapse is a failure mode of wood pallets which most frequently occurs during transportation and handling. The study objective was to develop a simplified procedure for making relative comparisons in the lateral collapse potential of competing pallet designs. A lateral load test machine was built which induces and measures the amount of horizontal force required to collapse a pallet. After testing, the model was sh

Engineered wood I-joists have grown in popularity as flooring and roofing structural systems in the past 30 years, replacing solid sawn lumber joists. Typical wood I-joists are manufactured with a very slender section, which is desirable to achieve higher flexural capacities and longer spans; however, this makes them susceptible to lateral torsional buckling failure. Continuous beam spans and uplift forces on roof uplift are potential scenarios where lateral instability can occur and reflects the need to investigate the lateral torsional buckling behavior of wood I-joists. A hygroexpansimeter, cockling tester and a novel x-ray microtomography technique were employed to characterize hygroexpansivity as well as macro- and micro-scale cockling of wood-free paper sheets containing varying amounts of aspen high yield pulp (HYP) in order to validate its potential applicability in inkjet printing. Results from the hygroexpansimeter confirm previous findings that substitution levels of 30% and above lead to a slight deterioration of hygroexpansivity; however, contrary to the expected outcome, aspen HYP did not necessarily result in a higher tendency to form cockles. The work was focused on the research of soil organic matter content and quality of selected forest soils. In the theoretical part of the thesis there were described in detail terms important to understand the given topic. In the practical part soil probes were excavated and soil samples were taken from individual horizons. The probing was carried out in two stands with a different representation of trees (forest type 0P, district Hodějov, Forest Management Třeboň, ownership of the Czech Republic, right to manage Forests of the Czech Republic, etc.). The bonding of fibres in paper is influenced by environmental changes (e.g. moisture) that may cause unstable fibres to move. These movements include cell-wall swelling, fibre lifting and/or puffing that break inter-fibre bonds and lead to reduced strength and surface roughness. Fibre puffing is defined as the expansion of the lumen area as result of changes in the environment. Puffing was investigated through image analysis of scanning electron micrographs. Detailed images were obtained with samples that were embedded in resin and then etched. Puffing of fibres was then quantified by calculat
