Abstract:
This article casts a wide net over the key events, people, locations and collections that shaped the development of the Arts Library at Yale University, beginning with its inception as a humble departmental collection. While the physical spaces that have housed the library have undergone tumultuous changes over the years, the collections themselves have evolved in ways both unique to Yale and universal to the field of librarianship. In autumn 2008, the library was re-christened the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library and it is now housed within the renovated Paul Rudolph Hall and the newly constructed addition, the Jeffrey H. Loria Center for the History of Art.

Abstract:
We rank institutions and researchers based on a standardized page count of their econometric theory publications over the last 11 years (1986–1996) in 11 economics and statistics journals. Our ranking criteria differ from those employed by Hall (1987, Econometric Theory 3, 171–194; 1990, Econometric Theory 6, 1–16) and Baltagi (1998, Econometric Theory 14, 1–43). We weight the standardized page count of a publication by the publishing journal's “impact factor,” which measures a journal's impact on the profession. We also depart from the previous rankings by focusing only on publications in theoretical econometrics. Our rankings reveal Yale University to be the leading academic institution, enjoying a large lead over the other top institutions: University of Chicago, M.I.T., and London School of Economics. Our rankings also reveal that Peter Phillips and Donald Andrews (both affiliated with Yale University) are the leading researchers in theoretical econometrics. We also provide rankings of countries and Ph.D. programs.

Abstract:
By exploring the newly-accessible Liberty Hall Archives affiliated with Kean University in Union NJ, this micro-study of the historical references in the writings of John Kean, first cashier of the Bank of the United States, and William Livingston, New Jersey’s first governor, reveals how two colonial and revolutionary gentlemen—one tutored at home in South Carolina and the other trained at Yale with a law practice in New York City—employed historical analogies in their pursuit of revolution and government-building. Specifically, how both the Kean paterfamilias and the builder of Liberty Hall used allusions to Greco-Roman history (and, in Kean’s case, to medieval Britain) provides insight into the manner that one time period of history adopted and adapted prior periods. Such a study reveals how Kean and Livingston, with diverse backgrounds and from different parts of early America, used history as they made their own.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the family background, childhood, education, and careers of George and Charles Townshend and their role in the making of the British empire. George Townshend was born on February 28, 1724 in London and Charles followed on August 27, 1725 in Essex. Their parents were Charles, third Viscount Townshend, and Etheldreda Harrison, also known as Audrey. The brothers grew up in the Norfolk countryside in Raynham Hall. They both attended the University of Cambridge. In 1747, Charles was elected to Parliament in a constituency controlled by his family and became a member of the Board of Trade. George, on the other hand, joined the army. The chapter also considers Sir Lewis Namier's influence on George and Charles Townshend and how the brothers became involved in British politics, military, and trade. Finally, it discusses the death of the Townshends' younger brother, Roger, and their father.
