Abstract:

The purpose of the present study was to examine the extent to which social factors such as gender, age, organized sport participation and family wealth, influence adolescents’ global self-worth and out-of-school physical activity (PA). Seven hundred twenty-one Greek students (346 boys and 375 girls), aged 14 to 16 years old (Mage = 14.97 ± .82 years), voluntarily participated in the present study. Participants completed online questionnaires measuring demographics (gender, age), organized participation in sport clubs, family wealth, global self-worth and out-of-school PA. Results revealed significant differences in adolescents’ self-worth due to age and family wealth, but not due to gender and organized sport participation. Similarly, there were significant differences in out-of-school PA due to gender, age, organized sport participation and family wealth. Age and family wealth were significant predictors of global self-worth, while age and gender were significant predictors of the out-of-school PA. No significant differences emerged in global self-worth between adolescents who reported being more active and those who were less active. These findings are partially in line with previous studies in the area of sport and exercise.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to determine whether, for first-degree relatives of patients presenting to a mood disorders clinic, family history information on psychiatric conditions collected by a psychiatrist and incorporated into the patient's medical records is as informative as that gathered during an interview specifically designed to collect family history data. The study group consisted of 472 first-degree relatives of 78 randomly selected index cases from a large mood disorders genetic database. Family history of psychiatric disorders recorded in regular psychiatric medical records (“clinician history”), and data obtained by a genetic counsellor administering specific family psychiatric history questionnaires to patients and multiple family informants (“family history”) were compared using a kappa statistic. Good agreement between the two methods on the presence or absence of a psychiatric disorder was found among first-degree relatives of index cases, but poor agreement was found with respect to the presence or absence of a specific mood disorder diagnosis(es) in a relative. The results suggest that a clinician-generated family psychiatric history is sensitive to the presence or absence of a psychiatric disorder when compared to a more structured detailed genetic interview. However, for research purposes, a clinician-generated family psychiatric history of a specific mood disorder diagnosis, without supporting collateral information, may not be reliable for use in supporting a mood disorder diagnosis in a patient and/or his relatives.

Purpose – This paper aims to explore gender and legitimacy in family business succession. Design/methodology/approach – Within the theoretical framework of French pragmatic sociology, the authors conceptualise the family business as the locus where two regimes of engagement are present, generating the co-presence of two orders of worth, namely the domestic and the industrial. Taking a processual approach to entrepreneuring, and using case studies of small enterprises in Italy, this paper explores the case of daughters taking over the family firms. Findings – The paper shows how the daughters’ perceived gender inequality in the succession process is justified and how the justification work and the production of legitimacy are accomplished, shifting from one order of worth to the other. Originality/value – The value of the contribution consists in pointing to how gender inequality is reproduced and justified inside the family business. The dual regime of engagement is what justifies the reproduction of a specific gender regime within the family business. Moreover, the paper adds a “gender” perspective to French pragmatist sociology.

Abstract:

Research on the relationship between exposure to family violence and functional adaptation in children has been inconsistent and inconclusive. In this study, exposure to family violence was correlated with vulnerability, resilience, and protective factors in a clinical sample of 60 children aged 8 through 11. Exposure was found to be related to children’s self-worth and to behavior problems. However, these relationships varied by gender, support, and type of functioning being measured. Exposure was positively correlated with behavioral problems among girls, and negatively correlated with self-worth among boys. High levels of support protected boys only from the effects of exposure.

This study utilizes the Korean-American and Mexican-American samples in the National Minority Business Survey to examine the debt structure of small businesses owned by individuals from these ethnic groups. Small business owners with higher household net worth were more likely to borrow from finance companies, friends, and credit card companies. When controlling for business, business owner and family characteristics, Mexican-American small business owners with high net worth were significantly more likely to borrow from commercial banks than Mexican-American small business owners with low net worth are. Korean-American small business owners with high net worth were significantly more likely to utilize family loans than Korean-American small business owners with low net worth are. Korean-American small businesses appeared to be more financially dependent on the financial strength of their community, while Mexican-American small businesses owners appeared to be more financially independent.

Abstract:

The Federal Reserve Board’s Survey of Consumer Finances for 2019 provides insights into the evolution of family income and net worth since the previous time the survey was conducted in 2016. The survey shows that over the 2016–19 period, the median value of real (inflation-adjusted) family income before taxes rose 5 percent, and mean income decreased 3 percent. Real median net worth increased 18 percent, and mean net worth rose 2 percent. This survey marks the first in the aftermath of the Great Recession in which between-survey changes in the median outpaced changes in the mean for either measure, indicating that families in large parts of both distributions enjoyed gains in economic well-being. And, while the data also reveal some disparities in the evolution of income and net worth since 2016 across families differentiated by economic characteristics, such as income or wealth, and demographic characteristics, such as age, education, or race and ethnicity, many groups with historically lower income and net worth saw relatively large gains. This article reviews these and other changes in the financial condition of U.S. families, including developments in assets, liabilities, debt payments, and credit market experiences. The findings in this article do not reflect the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on family finances, as almost all of the data in the 2019 survey were collected before the onset of the pandemic.

This article relies on in-depth, open-ended interviews with 15 Black men to explore three questions: What do Black men and Black women expect from marital life? How did these expectations evolve? and What impact, if any, will these expectations have on the cycle of the second shift and provider role strain? The author found that the male and female respondents expect that men will take on the provider roles in their families because a man's self-worth is rooted in his ability to take on the provider role. Respondents also expect that women will be nurturers in their families. This is not to suggest that the male respondents expect that their wives will be submissive—far from it. In fact, the male respondents expect their wives to work. However, regardless of whether women work or not, the respondents insist that men have to be providers and women have to be nurturers in their families. Finally, the male and female respondents intend to pass/have passed their gender-specific ideologies about family life and spousal roles on to their children.

Abstract:

This article introduces a formula to assess the total value of privately held family businesses from the owner's perspective. It is argued that the total value of a business is not only composed of its financial worth and private benefits, as is usually assumed by traditional financial theory, but that emotional components also have an impact on valuation. In particular, it is assumed that emotional returns (ER) positively affect total value, whereas emotional costs (EC) negatively affect total value. Even though every stakeholder faces emotional costs and returns, it is solely the family business owner who ultimately decides on the worth of a business and consequently factors ER-EC into his or her valuation. The presented formula provides a better understanding of investment decisions in family businesses and a more accurate valuation of these businesses.

Abstract Using a nationally representative sample of N=3,659 adults (mean age 55.6 in 2016) from the 2008, 2012, and 2016 rounds of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, we examine the impact of work-limiting health conditions, caregiving, and the length of time spent in a caregiving role inside and outside the home on total family net worth. Repeated measures analysis finds having a chronically ill or disabled household member (CIOD), or caring for a household member with a CIOD inside the home was associated with reduced total family net worth (TFNW; -$146.7, p<0.002), on average, across the three time periods. In-home caregiving across time periods does not have an additive effect, but rather appears to result in a one-time drop in TFNW. Respondents who provide care for out-of-home family or friends report higher TFNW on average over time ($73.3K, p<0.001). Respondents with a work-limiting health condition report a lower mean TFNW over this time span (-$53.1K, p<0.005). Caregiving inside the home has 2-3 times the impact on TFNW as having a work-limiting health condition, though in the overall model, the effect of the two variables together on TFNW is additive. An adult is at the greatest disadvantage with respect to financial preparedness for retirement if they are both a caregiver (or have a CIOD in their household) and have a work-limiting health condition than if they have only one of these characteristics or have neither characteristic. Even a single time period of caregiving reduces total family net worth over time.

Purpose In order to deepen our knowledge of governance of family firms, the purpose of this paper is to focus our attention on the relation between family owners who are members of the board of directors and firm performance. Also, this study sheds more light on how the generation in charge of the family firm affects that relationship, as generational involvement may be a unique predictor of governance behavior in these firms. Design/methodology/approach The authors applied a cross-sectional ordinary least squares regression model to test the hypotheses on a sample of 313 non-listed Spanish family SMEs. The authors suggest the possibility of a non-linear relationship between the percentage of ownership by family members of the board of directors and firm performance, and specifically, the authors propose an S-shaped effect that implies two breakpoints. Findings The authors find not only that an inverted U-shaped relationship exists, but also an S-shaped relationship between family board members’ ownership and firm performance in family SMEs. Nevertheless, the results are different in comparing first-, second- and later-generation family firms. Originality/value This is one of the few empirical studies that examine the relationship between family board ownership and firm performance in the context of non-listed family SMEs. The authors consider that the influences of family directors on the board of directors as well as the concentration of family ownership on the board of directors are worth studying in non-listed family SMEs. Moreover, previous studies have focused mainly on large listed family firms but not on unlisted ones.

Varied freshwater resources of Orissa blessed with diverse fish fauna. In total, 186 species of fishes belonging to 11 orders, 33 families and 96 genera were recorded from various freshwater bodies of Orissa. Cypriniformes was the most dominant order and Cyprinidae was diverse family. The trophic level of fishes of Orissa ranged from 2.0 to 4.5 containing 62.41% of carnivorous species. Fishery status revealed existence of 120 species worth for capture fishery, 101 species worth for ornamental fishery, 37 species worth for culture fishery and 25 species worth for sport fishery. Threat status comprises of one Critically Endangered species, five Endangered species, three Vulnerable species and remaining 177 species were Not Threatened. The findings of present communication may serve as baseline information for planning, conservation and management of fish and fisheries resources of Orissa.

BackgroundNHS mental health services are under pressure due to chronic underfunding and constrained resources. The Health & Social Care Act implemented an extensive restructure of the NHS and introduced three new legal duties: duty to arrange, promote competition, and integrate services.AimTo establish how the Health and Social Care Act 2012 affected commissioning of mental health services in England and how the duties are being fulfilled.MethodFreedom of Information (FOI) requests were sent to all 211 clinical commissioning groups in England. The number, value, and length of all contracts for mental health services were requested from 2013 to 2016 by type and name of provider; as well as a range of quality and performance data.ResultsThe FOI received a 93% response rate. CCGs commissioned between 1–127 contracts each: 65.3% of all contracts were awarded to the third sector (private for profit, not for profit, and voluntary organisations), amounting to 6% of the total value of contracts commissioned. NHS foundation trusts were awarded 25% of contracts, worth 70% of the total value of contracts. 71% of contracts had no evidence of quality monitoring.ConclusionThe high volume and low value of contracts commissioned to third sector organisations fulfils the new duty to arrange but not to integrate; showing considerable fragmentation of mental health provision. The emerging external market is a result of the Health & Social Care Act promoting diversification of the provider market. Finally, the lack of quality and performance data raises concerns over the transparency and accountability of an NHS that is increasingly being provided by companies.

This paper outlines the findings of a study which asked parents how they experienced participating in family preservation programs (FP) in Melbourne, Australia. The study explored whether participation was influential in changing their perceptions of themselves as parents. It was expected that participation would lead to a stronger sense of self-worth and that this could be harnessed to facilitate change. The study found that parents’ sense of self as a parent was enhanced by participation in FP programs and this led to an increased sense of hopefulness in their capacity to care safely for their children.

Stephen Darwall's understanding of what kind of life is a good life, good for the person whose life it is, belongs in the same family as, among others, Scanlon's and mine. It is a family of views about well-being which descends from Aristotle, and Darwall has much of interest to say about the good life, and particularly about Aristotle's views on the subject. Many of the observations central to his position seem to me cogent, and are shared by other writers. These include three important propositions: that a good life, one which is good for those whose life it is, is not necessarily the same as a life which they think is good for them, nor does it necessarily consist in their desires being satisfied, nor in the satisfaction of any subset of their desires (e.g. their considered desires, or those not based on any false assumptions).that people aim or intend to do what is worth doing, to have relationships worth having, and engage in goals worth pursuing, and so on, and that all of these, and their combination, are distinct from having a good life (and this explains how people can knowingly sacrifice their own good), andthat what makes the well-being of people worth pursuing, to the extent that it is, what provides reasons for those same people and for others to protect or promote it, is that people are valuable in themselves.

Drawing on fixed effect regression, the results identified that the involvement of family members in top management team significantly affected the family firm value. It was also revealed that the female family manager had a lower firm value than the male family manager. Moreover, the education level of the family manager positively affected the firm value. These results provide an empirical evidence on how gender and education of family managers influence family firm value. It is further depicted that the results of this study are in line with the upper echelons theory in which the differences in human resources (e.g. gender and education) arisen from the family involvement in a management undeniably affect family firm value. As for the practical contribution, this study suggests that powerful actors in the family firms should be a family member involved in a management. It is also a worth saying that the involvement of family members on the top management teams should consider gender and level of education.

Purpose The purpose of the paper is to explore innovative solutions to the challenge of creating a family environment without children in luxury lodges in New Zealand. Design/methodology/approach In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with guests, staff and managers in a luxury lodge that excludes children. An interpretivist analysis of interviewees’ comments was undertaken. Findings Guests at the childless lodge talked about the serenity and peace they experienced during their stay, and particularly the meal experiences. They thought that not having children on the premises is an advantage for this experience. Lodge managers said that not admitting children is their point of difference for the market that they are targeting. Research limitations/implications This research contributes to the emerging research theme of family tourism and extends the concept of family tourism to include family units without children. Practical implications There are significant practical implications in terms of industry approaches to creating a family atmosphere in luxury accommodation without children. Social implications That a family atmosphere does not need to include children and enables luxury accommodation to cater to a diverse range of family units. There are also implications for social diversity beyond the traditional assumptions of the nuclear family. Originality/value The exclusion of children from luxury lodges is certainly not new, but the concept of maintaining a family environment without children is innovative and worth investigating to consider the wider implications of the paradox of family without children.

Superficial and systemic diagnosis of family The distinction between two types of diagnosis of family was inspired by the concept of surface and source features of personality by R.B. Cattell. By means of existing psychological questionnaires we can only know the surface of consciously available mental phenomena. The same is true in the diagnosis of family. The McMaster model of family, systemic in its assumptions, developed research tools giving access only to the surface of the phenomena. Although they are divided into certain thematic categories they do not reveal what is really important in the family system. In this article, the author, after a detailed discussion of one of the tests based on the McMaster theoretical model, is attempting to identify the source features (here: unavailable for conscious cognition) of the family, hereinafter called systemic traits. In this research the exploration factor analysis was used. Three perspectives of the opinion of the family were maintained (like in the Family Assessment Measure). Factor analysis allowed identification of three factors for each perspective of the family assessment. Confirmative analysis proved a satisfactory match (using RMSEA, GFI and AGFI statistics). The accuracy of the identified systemic model was then tested by a confirmation study (confirmative factor analysis using Amos from SPSS). The authors also prepared a provisional questionnaire for measuring these systemic traits of the family. The tool proved to be promising and the work worth continuing. Incidentally, it turned out that the characteristics of the family system are relatively independent of personality traits of family members.

The present study is aimed at identifying the most prominent determinants of OCD along with their strength to classify the OCD patients from healthy controls. The data for this cross-sectional study were collected from 200 diagnosed OCD patients and 400 healthy controls. The respondents were selected through purposive sampling and interviewed by using the Y-BOCS scale with the addition of a factor, worth of an individual in his family. The validity and reliability of data were assessed through Cronbach’s alpha and confirmatory factor analysis. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modeling was adopted to determine threatening determinants along with their strength to predict OCD in an individual. The results of ANN modeling depicted 98% accurate classification of OCD patients from healthy controls. The most contributing factors in determining the OCD patients according to normalized importance were the contamination and cleaning (100%); symmetric and perfection (72.5%); worth of an individual in the family (71.1%); aggressive, religious, and sexual obsession (50.5%); high-risk assessment (46.0%); and somatic obsessions and checking (24.0%).

Family physicians act as gatekeepers of the healthcare system and have an indispensable role in providing holistic care in the primary care system. While previous studies had focused on the geographic maldistribution of family physicians, the current study investigated the distribution of job opportunities for family physicians by analyzing recruitment advertisements posted in medical association journals, as an indirect way to observe the marketplace demand for physicians. We collected all the recruitment advertisements for family physicians in the twelve issues of the Taiwan Medical Journal, the official organ of the Taiwan Medical Association, in 2018. In contrast to 124 new trainees annually, 739 advertisements for family physicians were posted within the entire year. After eliminating repeated advertisements, there were 302 distinct advertisements, of which hospitals accounted for 18.9% (n = 57). The job opportunities at hospitals were offered mainly by regional hospitals (n = 26) and community hospitals (n = 29), but only two by medical centers. Family physicians in Taiwan were in great demand not only by primary care clinics but also by hospitals. The role of family physicians in hospitals is worth further study.

ObjectivesThere are limited data on Western Ontario Rotator Cuff (WORC) Index scores in a population without shoulder pathology. The primary purpose was to provide normative reference values for the WORC in an adult population with healthy shoulders. The secondary purpose was to identify demographic factors and comorbidities that may impact WORC scores.MethodsThe WORC survey was completed by patients and family members at a suburban outpatient orthopaedic centre. Patients with current shoulder injury or former upper extremity surgery were excluded. Percentage scores were calculated for total and subscale measures. Demographic factors and comorbidities were evaluated to identify possible risk factors for an abnormal baseline score (less than 100).ResultsThere were 988 participants (434 men, 554 women). Overall WORC median (IQR) was 98.64 (94.3 to 100). Each subscale was greater than 96 for all sex-based and age-based subgroups. Median WORC scores were greater than those reported in previous literature following surgery for shoulder pathology. Demographic risk factors for poor WORC scores included body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 (p<0.05), tobacco use (p<0.05), a history of shoulder problems (p<0.001) and a history of shoulder injections (p<0.001).ConclusionsThis study provides baseline values for the WORC survey in a US suburban population across a range of age groups, demonstrating that surgery for shoulder pathology often results in improved WORC scores, but may not return patients to baseline. Demographic risk factors for lower scores include smoking, BMI above 30, history of shoulder problems or history of shoulder injection.Level of evidenceDescriptive epidemiology study; Level of evidence: III.

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the characteristics and behavior of family firms in Ibero-America, and their contribution and fit to the broader field of research. Based on the five articles in this special issue, this paper attempts to give an overview of their main contributions. Design/methodology/approach This paper explains in a contextual and analytical way the contributions of five papers that focus their attention on Ibero-American family firms, by linking them to the current research in the field and finding their fit within the broader field of family business. Tackling different topics, these five papers discuss about the comparison between family vs non-family businesses, innovation in family firms, and governance in family firms Findings Findings suggest that there is a need to stimulate research in family business in Ibero-America, especially Latin America, regarding family business dynamics, the different roles of the family within the enterprise, family governance, and the role of women. With regards to innovation the cultural and economic context play an important role in how they perform innovative activities. Originality/value This paper contributes to further understanding family firms by discussing the importance of the context and by linking all five papers with the broader literature in family business. The introduction also discusses topics worth to be further researched in Ibero-America.

In the UK, conflict resolution strategies have become increasingly popular within community development practice. Conflict resolution has been used to prevent homelessness, tackle neighbourhood disputes, address family conflict, facilitate community involvement, address discrimination and reduce anti-social behaviour. The promise of conflict resolution is that confidential and informal processes of ‘justice from below’ might better reconcile community interests, improve relationships and promote social change. Within the field of community development, these promises have been widely vaunted. However, outside community development, conflict resolution has been subject to extensive criticism. This article draws upon debates in legal scholarship to discuss four criticisms in particular: that conflict resolution disadvantages vulnerable groups, undermines social justice, suppresses legitimate grievances and mistreats public issues as private problems. It then considers these criticisms in relation to community development practice and explores potential solutions.

This article examines intergenerational relations from the perspective of Taiwanese youth. Specifically, the major focus is on how the relations between second and third generations may be affected by prior family experiences between first, second, and third generations. Possible effects of the three-generation living arrangement on intergenerational relations are also explored. Panel data of 2,500 seventh graders in 2000 in northern Taiwan show that half of teenagers were raised in coresidence living arrangement with grandparents. Results confirm that relations between grandparents and parents and between grandparents and grandchildren do affect parent-teenager relations. Notably, more so than coresidence, the early family experience of being cared for by paternal grandparents produces significant positive effects on adolescent-father relations and negative adolescent-father relations if cared for by maternal grandparents. It is suggested that the impact of earlier family process on subsequent family relations is worth further investigation.

Stakeholders may have different views of what count as benefits and their importance. We compared views on benefits in research with adults with intellectual disability among adults with intellectual disability, family and friends, service providers, researchers, and institutional review board members. We found that adults with intellectual disability value direct and indirect research benefits, and want to participate in research that offers them. Other stakeholders generally see less value in direct benefits and predict more tempered interest in research participation as compared to adults with intellectual disability. To promote respectful research participation, research policy and practice should incorporate the views of adults with intellectual disability.

We exploit the Youth in Transition Survey, Cohort A, to investigate access and barriers to postsecondary education (PSE). We first look at how access to PSE by age 21 is related to family characteristics, including family income and parental education. We find that the effects of the latter significantly dominate those of the former. Among the 25% of all youths who do not access PSE, 23% of this group state that they had no PSE aspirations and 43% report no barriers. Only 22% of the 25% who do not access PSE (or 5.5% of all youths in our sample) claim that “finances” constitute a barrier. Further analysis suggests that affordability per se is an issue in only a minority of those cases where finances are cited, suggesting that the real problem for the majority of those reporting financial barriers may be that they do not perceive PSE to be of sufficient value to be worth pursuing: “it costs too much” may mean “it is not worth it” rather than “I cannot afford to go.” Our general conclusion is that cultural factors are the principal determinants of PSE participation. Policy implications are discussed.
