Since the year 1972, several organizations have assigned “words of the year” or WOTY to define what is considered the most important word of the year, basically reflecting the theme or expression that best describes the year that was. It can be a cultural phenomenon, a controversy, an influential concept, or a popular thought. This WOTY is voted upon by linguists and lexicographers and the bodies that designate these include the American Dialect Society, Cambridge University for the Cambridge Dictionary, Collins English Dictionary, Dictionary.com, Macquarie Dictionary, Merriam Webster, and Oxf

Abstract:
This technical note describes how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Latin America and the Caribbean, and considers the implications for future population health, health spending, healthcare service reforms, and investments to prepare for future health emergencies. It provides a summary of the few existing empirical studies and then contributes original analysis using administrative data from hospitals and vital registration systems in five countries. It shows substantial declines in health and healthcare delivery during the first year of the pandemic, especially for preventive and elective ca

Abstract:
We present evidence suggesting that a simple measure of central bank communication tone, as perceived and interpreted by the media, correlates with the performance of financial assets and market participants’ expectations. This correlation appears even stronger than that of indices constructed using more complex models, such as a large language models like BERT. We employ a straightforward quantitative index, inspired by the well-known Baker, Bloom and Davis (2016) paper, using a “bag of words” approach and semantic orientation to measure this media-perceived tone orientation in terms of dovis

Abstract:
The future world population growth and size will be largely determined by the pace of fertility decline in sub-Saharan Africa. Correct estimates of education-specific fertility rates are crucial for projecting the future population. Yet, consistent crosscountry, comparable estimates of education-specific fertility for sub-Saharan African countries are still lacking. We propose a flexible Bayesian hierarchical model that reconstructs education-specific fertility rates by combining the patchy Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data and the United Nations’ (UN) reliable estimates of total ferti

Cells are the smallest units of life. The environment around cells is always changing. Cells need to adapt to survive. This curriculum linked game and lesson plan introduces the world of cells to pupils 8-13. But can they keep their cells alive? This is a guide to how the cell survival resources can be used in a lesson and can be adapted as the teacher sees fit to do so. This lesson is aimed at 8-13 year olds, and fits into an hour long session. The Cell Survival Game has been adapted for both home use and for use in the classroom, and is accompanied by a series of videos. Learning Outcomes –

Abstract:
Raised profile striping (RPS) was installed on the roadway center and edge lines along a 40-mile corridor of Natchez Trace Parkway (NATR) as a safety measure to reduce traffic accidents. To measure potential effects to the acoustic environment, controlled noise measurements were conducted within NATR in May 2023. Uncontrolled measurements were taken in 2024 once the roads reopened to provide background acoustic data for the analysis. These data were used to conduct noise modeling scenarios analyzing the effect of RPS on the acoustic environment. Modeled results indicate that vehicles running o

Abstract:
The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the education sector in unprecedented ways. As with many other countries around the world, the Ethiopian government closed schools following the first identified case in the capital city, Addis Ababa, on the 16th of March 2020. Across the country, these closures resulted in more than 26 million learners staying at home for almost eight months (UNESCO, 2021). In addition to this hiatus in their education, pupils were promoted automatically to the next grade with only 45 days of catch-up classes (Ministry of Education, 2020). In other words, those
