Full textResearch by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) continuously indicate that new venture creation success rate in South Africa is disturbingly low. This situation arises despite numerous support mechanisms in place to encourage citizens to establish their own businesses. This is an indication that current approaches to encourage new venture creation are not working. New approaches must therefore be found. The goal of this study was to combine the processes of project management and entrepreneurship, two seemingly diametrically opposed management philosophies into an integrated process model that will contribute to enhancing the new venture creation process. So, at the heart of this study is the wish to assist prospective entrepreneurs in their new venture creation journey. To achieve this objective, action research design, an emerging approach to qualitative research was adopted. Specifically, the canonical action research was used. Holistically, the study can be described as applied, cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory in nature. Through a series of iterative canonical action research cycles, a model was developed. The results suggest that despite their seemingly diametrically opposed management philosophies, an integrated project management model for new venture creation is achievable.

Full textTurnover from project related business in Sweden amounts to approximately 1000 billion Swedish kronor per year. According to the Swedish project index, the average project maturity in Sweden is 2.56 measured at a scale of 1-5. Increasing the average project maturity in Sweden to an average of 3.5 corresponds to savings of more than 100 billion kronor per year. Project management should therefore be seen as a key competence for all companies and organizations. There is a great deal of theoretical knowledge today about project management, tools and project models. The solution to the difficulties in delivering projects that meet their goals is probably not to create even more new theory. The question should be how to apply existing theory and research to increase a specific organization's ability to drive successful projects. The construction industry faces the same challenges as others in the field of project management. At the same time, the construction industry is struggling with a productivity trend that is weaker than for the industry measured in value added per hour worked. Based on the challenges described above, the problem for the individual company is how they will adapt to the challenges today with low productivity in projects and future increase in complexity and increased rate of change. What can an organization do, based on theory and research to increase their project maturity? And given that the organization knows what they can do they then need to ask the question; of all possible things that can be done, what should the organization prioritize and in what order should the organization make improvements in methods and ways of working to gradually increase their ability to carry out successful projects? The starting point for this report project is the investigation of a specific company and the various options available for solving the above problems, based on project management theory, science and the specific conditions that characterize the organization. The conclusion is that measuring project maturity is an effective method for identifying and prioritizing improvement areas of a company. The study also shows that it is important to start in a structured way with applying the basics before a company implements a project model, hoping that the model will solve business challenges. The foundation on which the project model stands is the consistent and systematic application of the relevant working methods and methodologies. The foundation needs be in place before laying the other building blocks in place. Although this report analyzes what a specific company can do, the authors´s view is that the approach and the conclusions are generic enough to be applicable for other companies that want to increase their project maturity.

Full textThe Lean Construction (Lightweight Construction) is a construction philosophy that seeks to reduce the resources needed for the production and the optimization of production processes. The growth of the construction industry, the shortage of manpower and equipment and the need for programming of materials in advance, are reasons that encourage the search for a planning model that allows the reading of the strategic operational plan information. The goal is to demonstrate that a planning model developed with actions and targeted planning techniques by the Last Planner (planning) contribute in the implementation of Lean Construction. With pre supposed that these techniques, when applied, can result in the reduction of time, labour and cost. The search here was exposed through a theoretical and exploratory research method seeking to create a planning model that establishes a clear view of the hierarchy of different levels of management in planning contributes to increased efficiency of the planning system, since the sector has adapted concepts, methods and techniques of industrial environments that differ from the context of the activity that gave rise to the technique just producing a system inadequate and low effectiveness. The planning model formed through a WBS (work breakdown structure project partition), organised in work packages and ordered by the Executive of the sequence, as recommended by the Last Planner, allows the identification of processing activities and workflow, enabling the application of lean production systems. Using a planning System the same EAP budgeting process to work planning, information float from strategic to operational allowing real time get the cash flow of the work, the scheduling of resources and "S" curves of physical and financial monitoring. Through monitoring of the work and the feedback loop of planning, these "S" curves and resource schedules would be altered, depending on the progress of the work, through a single systemic process, the feedback loop of the progress of the work on the physical plan.

The thesis proposes an effective project management (PM)to integrate the different work items in building construction. The application of PM can complete all the work item of construction in the same area within a limited duration. The work scope and its executive duration are integrated into the PM plan which is distributed to the members. Therefore, every PM member, no metter when he joins this project organizstion, clearly knows his own duty and when the duty needs to be finished. The interface between the different construction item can be handled efficiently by using work breakdown structure (WBS)and time management. The PM members will also know the related construction interface so they can prepare the associated meterial. Furthermore, the sofeware of Microsofe Project and critical path method (CPM)are used in the study to arrange the construction items. The interior decorated work can be incorporated into the Grant chart to promote the work efficiency.
Molefi, Khotso Daniel. "The use of parametric cost estimating and risk management techniques to improve project cost estimates during feasibility studies." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/8698.
Full text“A robust set of estimates puts a project on a firm footing from day 1, allowing the project manager to apply the right level of resources at the appropriate time. If the plan has been based on poor estimates, problems will occur during the execution of the project …” This statement places great importance on the ability to estimate costs as accurately as practicable early during a project life cycle. Many techniques have been proposed with the aim of aiding with the production of early cost estimates, which have acceptable accuracies necessary for Feasibility Study purposes. One such technique is Parametric Cost Estimating for developing Parametric Cost Models used in producing these conceptual estimates. At the heart of Parametric Cost Estimating Technique, is a fundamental statistical technique commonly known as Linear Regression Analysis. The problem that the research addresses is that of the general misconception found to prevail within project houses that some engineering systems are too complex to model using the Parametric Cost Estimating Technique. The objectives of this research are to investigate and demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique in predicting the costs of a system for Feasibility Study purposes. The objectives were achieved by conducting a secondary literature review of case studies of similar Parametric Cost Models that were developed by others for engineering systems of varying complexities. A second method used in achieving the objectives included formulating a case study in which a Parametric Cost Model was developed to illustrate the concept and to prove that the accuracies produced by the model meet the requirements for Feasibility Studies. The research was limited to initial project costs required for Feasibility Studies, ignoring the effects of qualitative factors, focusing only on the acquisition costs and not the total life cycle costs of the system. The case study was developed for a passenger motor vehicle as the system of interest because sufficient cost data in the form of vehicle retail price and performance specifications is publicly available in car magazines making it possible to build a meaningful Parametric Cost Model. The Parametric Cost Model was developed using Microsoft Excel 2007 and had a Mean Absolute Error Rate of 10.9% and the range of accuracy obtained, -20% to 10% with 67% confidence level and -30% to 30% with 95% confidence level, conforming to a Class 4 estimate which meets the accuracy requirements for a Feasibility Study.

Full textIn the thesis the analysis of project management information systems is carried out. The main task of the thesis is to analyze and evaluate project management systems, consider all project management tools and suggest possible improvements. The first section provides an overview of what a project is, what it is created for, the content of the project, a summary, a description of the problem, the purpose for which the project is done, methods of brainstorming in the team, project life cycle and project management tools. The second section reviewed the project management systems, compared them with each other and reviewed the information systems that are useful for the project. The third section examines in practice all the systems that are useful for the project, in particular such systems as: MS Project, Trello, Canva, instaplus.me and others, and demonstrates their use in a real project. The fourth section is devoted to labor protection during the project and all the nuances that may arise when working with the project and information systems.

This article is mainly focused on application of WBS to the planning budget management for the R&D projects of government organization-defense technology R&D department. Over the years, project management has shown an extraordinary effect on the execution of many large-scale projects in the world. The initiative of dividing a work into the very basic elements, proposed by Dr. Frederick Winslow Taylor the founding father of science management, has developed into one of the most important approaches for modern project management, which is called WBS (Work Breakdown Structure). In 1988, the Department of Defense of the United States further applied the WBS to a wide range of significant armaments production management and established operation standards accordingly. This study adopts the “Case Study “ and “Expert Interview” approaches to look into the results of the application of planning WBS to the project management of government organization-defense technology R&D department and recommend potential solutions as well. Research results are summarized as following: 1. The application of WBS to the budget management and cost accumulation for the R&D projects of government organization-defense technology R&D department cannot truly reflect the real status and is not as reasonable as expected due to budget perform methods and character factors etc. But on the cost accumulation field of WBS to the project management has shown a good results. 2. The government organization-defense technology R&D department application of WBS lacks an auditing mechanism to evaluate the performance of project management due to affect by government budget system on actual situation. Therefore, a parallel and reasonable cost performance auditing mechanism should be established. For example, to establish an EVMS in order to achieve better efficiency for project management. 3. The government organization-defense technology R&D department application of WBS/OBS/CBS to the project management, the accounting procedure shall be transform temperately. For example, transfer of government budget (sub-unit budget) to fund operation budget (affiliated Sub-unit budget) can produce better efficiency for the application of WBS in project management. Key words: Project management, Work Breakdown Structure, Planning budget, Performance evaluation.
