Abstract:
This devise addresses the inadequacies of providing a quick means of holding jobs of irregular shapes such as are encountered in small scale fabrication workshops. The conventional bench vise often does not provide the adequate grip for such shapes so that attachments in the form of V blocks are usually provided to enhance the grip before drilling operations are carried out. This versatile work holding device enables fabricators to perform drilling and other production operations on a work piece. This device produced from mild steel plates uses the toggle principle to provide rapid grip. Comparative tests on time span in the use of this device and the bench vice for job set up, production operation and then disassembly showed that time is gained with use of the device.

Abstract:
Two designs (A and B) of 4H-SiC thyristors for pulse power applications were implemented and characterized in this work. Both designs have the same layout and epi-layer stack except for the anode layers: thyristors with design A (baseline) had a thin (~0.5 um) anode while devices with design B (optimized) consisted of a heavily doped cap layer (~0.5 um, ~1019/cc) and ~1.5 um p-type layer with lower doping (~1018/cc). All devices were fabricated in 4” 4H-SiC subSuperscript textstrates (three wafers per each design) and were fully characterized at the wafer level including measurements of forward voltage, blocking voltage, leakage current, and holding current. It was shown that the mean value of the holding current in the thyristors with thin anode was significantly higher (0.7A) than that of the thyristors with thick anode (0.1A), while other parameters had practically the same values. The open circuit voltage decay (OCVD) method was used for measurements of the minority carrier lifetime in order to correlate it with the holding current. Impact of material properties and device design parameters on the holding current is discussed as well.

The aim of the present work is to propose and substantiate a scheme of a device for positioning prismatic-body details on two holes with parallel axes and a plane, perpendicular to them. This will help to achieve high accuracy of linear and angular orientation of the workpiece. Thus the requirements for the accuracy of the center-to-center distance of the base holes will be reduced and the process of assembling the workpiece to the grip pawls will be simplified.

Abstract:
In an effort to increase efficiency of the process of handling of an air-penetrating flexible container during its’ filling with free-flowing materials a devise has been designed for automatic gripping, opening, holding and sealing of flexible container, containing vacuum gripping devise, pneumatic drive for its’ transfer and a control system based on programmable logical controller. Vacuum gripping device can be produced using the method of additive technologies. It has a modular structure, while each module contains random or structured vacuum chambers located on work surface area, connected to a system of internally branched channels with the source of vacuum. Large number of small vacuum chambers in place allows to minimize leakage of air though pores and openings on the surface of the mouth of weaved flexible container, which increases reliability of holding and reduces energy consumption during the process of handling air-penetrating packaging during its’ filling.

Abstract:
Abstract The development of mobile phones has largely increased human interactions. Whilst the use of these devices for communication has received significant attention, there has been little analysis of more passive interactions. Through census data on casual social groups, this work suggests a clear pattern of mobile phones being carried in people’s hands, without the person using it (that is, not looking at it). Moreover, this study suggests that when individuals join members of the opposite sex there is a clear tendency to stop holding mobile phones whilst walking. Although it is not clear why people hold their phones whilst walking in such large proportions (38% of solitary women, and 31% of solitary men), we highlight several possible explanation for holding the device, including the need to advertise status and affluence, to maintain immediate connection with friends and family, and to mitigate feelings related to anxiety and security.

One of the major time consuming factor on calculating the machine time for the job is loading and unloading. By decreasing the time taken during the loading and unloading of the job, play a significant role in increasing the production of the company. In the proposed study, the swaging machine is automated by means of simple but effective mechanism. The mechanism involves from lifting of the job from its initial position to the top of the slope with the help of slider operated by the pneumatic piston .Then, it is carried to the designated position in the work holding device with the help of controlled gravitational force by belt operated profile. The feeder attached to the swaging machine feed the job and bring back the job, back to the work holding device form there, it is carried to the unloading area by hooks attached belt conveyor. Position sensor is used to sense the position of the job and feed it as an input to operate the other Mechanisms. This work is a cyclic process which converts the swaging machine automated and work continuously. By this proposed work, the production increase, dependency on the reduction of man power, working hours of the swaging machine is increased.

Abstract:
Metastable nanopowder ZnTiO3 was pressed into cylindrical compacts at 200 MPa. Compacts were treated by conventional heating with isothermal holding at 931?C for 10 minutes, 25 minutes and 40 minutes. ZnTiO3 compacts were also heated with a two-step sintering schedule with maximal 913?C and isothermal holding at 896?C, for approximately the same holding times as the isothermal schedule. Shrinkage during heating was monitored with a dilatometric device, while microstructure was determined with atomic force microscopy. XRD patterns were collected for the most interesting samples. Microstructures of sintered specimens showed differences introduced during the last sintering stage by the two different heating schedules. Goal of the presented work was to discuss the possible sintering mechanisms for the two step sintering schedulle according to the presented results.

Abstract:
At present, modern spacecraft use high-precision equipment that is sensitive to influence impacts. In this regard, there is a need to create shock-free trigger devices for mechanisms for holding and releasing movable structural elements. These tasks determined the vector of development of electromechanical trigger devices that do not contain pyrotechnic devices in their design. Along with the new tasks, there are constant problems of rocket and space technology – the improvement of mass-dimensional characteristics. However, pyrotechnic elements force the use of massive housings and brackets for structures that can withstand a sharp increase in pressure and the impact of the executive parts. The use of universal pyropatrons does not always allow optimizing the design of the retention mechanism. Also, one of the disadvantages of working with pyrotechnic media is the increased risk of working. The paper presents the results of a study of the possibility of modernizing the design of trigger devices, improving their mechanical and electrical characteristics. The research was carried out using calculated and experimental methods, and experimental samples of trigger devices were manufactured and released. As a result of the work, an upgraded trigger device was developed, better electrical characteristics were achieved, power consumption was reduced (the response time was reduced), mass-dimensional characteristics were improved, and the number of structural parts was reduced.

Abstract:
In this paper, we consider the results of a long-term study of the effect of prolonged stay (more than 30 years) of elements of capillary intake devices - mesh phase separators in the liquid propellant components (and under vapors) on the change in their working parameters (characteristics). In the process of research, the following types of work were carried out: extracting mesh phase separators from the propellant tanks of the missile stages to be detected after they were neutralized; analyzing the chemical composition of the substances located on the grids of mesh phase separators; determining the capillary holding capacity of the mesh, measuring the geometric dimensions of the mesh by the optical method; and performing metallographic studies of the mesh patterns. As a result, the authors determined the decrease in the capillary holding capacity of the screen of mesh phase separators for 31 years of their stay in the liquid propellant components and under their vapor. The analysis of the main factors was made that influenced the change in the design parameters of the capillary intake device: uniform corrosion damage and local changes in the microstructure of the structural material of the meshes, as well as a change in the value of the contact angle of the propellant with the mesh material.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the percentage of time that the population spends sitting has increased substantially due to the use of computers as the main tool for work or leisure and the increase in jobs with a high office workload. As a consequence, it is common to suffer musculoskeletal pain, mainly in the back, which can lead to both temporary and chronic damage. This pain is related to holding a posture during a prolonged period of sitting, usually in front of a computer. This work presents a IoT posture monitoring system while sitting. The system consists of a device equipped with Force Sensitive Resistors (FSR) that, placed on a chair seat, detects the points where the user exerts pressure when sitting. The system is complemented with a Machine Learning model based on Artificial Neural Networks, which was trained to recognize the neutral correct posture as well as the six most frequent postures that involve risk of damage to the locomotor system. In this study, data was collected from 12 participants for each of the seven positions considered, using the developed sensing device. Several neural network models were trained and evaluated in order to improve the classification effectiveness. Hold-Out technique was used to guide the training and evaluation process. The results achieved a mean accuracy of 81% by means of a model consisting of two hidden layers of 128 neurons each. These results demonstrate that is feasible to distinguish different sitting postures using few sensors allocated in the surface of a seat, which implies lower costs and less complexity of the system.

Abstract:
The research is aimed to investigate Bauschinger effect and strain hardening by the application of drawbead-tester. Generally, the drawbead is used to control the material flow into the die cavity in sheet metal forming process. When the material is flowing into the drawbead, it may cause the development of strain hardening and/or Bauschinger effect. This work consists of two main equipment particularly developed for the experiments. They are drawbead-tester and three-point bending device. The drawbead-tester provides the possibility to integrate the optical in-process strain analysis system. Whereas the sheet metal was being formed in the drawbead, the local strain of the sheet metal was evaluated. At the same time, the drawbead restraining and holding forces were measured. The three point bending device and numerical simulation method are used to investigate the Bauschinger effect. In the experiment, the cyclic bending forces were measured and compared with the result obtained by numerical simulation.

Abstract:
Abstract X-ray usage in medical diagnosis could have hurtful effects for both patient and medical imaging wards’ personnel as a result of failure to follow radiation protection (RP) principles (shielding, distance and time) by radiographers. This cross-sectional descriptive–analytical study was carried out by valid and reliable online questionnaire, which was completed by 103 radiographers. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation and frequency) and analytical statistics (Pearson’s correlation coefficient test, Student’s independent t-test and analysis of variance test) in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20 (sig: P < 0.05). The study’s response rate was 67.32%. The mean scores of participants’ total, RP and device knowledge were 42.76, 42.86 and 42.72 out of 100, respectively. Work experience and age of participants were significantly related to device and total knowledge (P < 0.01). Results revealed an undesirable level of participants’ awareness, indicating the necessity of holding training courses, especially for less experienced radiographers.

Abstract:
The knowledge of the acoustic impedance of a material allows for the calculation of its acoustic absorption. Impedance can also be linked to structural and physical proprieties of materials. However, while the impedance of pavement samples in laboratory conditions can usually be measured with high accuracy using devices such as the impedance tube, complete in-situ evaluation results are less accurate than the laboratory results and is so time consuming that a full scale implementation of in-situ evaluations is practically impossible. Such a system could provide information on the homogeneity and the correct laying of an installation, which is proven to be directly linked to its acoustic emission properties. The present work studies the development of a measurement instrument which can be fastened through holding elements to a moving laboratory (i.e., a vehicle). This device overcomes the issues that afflict traditional in-situ measurements, such as the impossibility to perform a continuous spatial characterization of a given pavement in order to yield a direct evaluation of the surface’s quality. The instrumentation has been uncoupled from the vehicle’s frame with a system including a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller, studied to maintain the system at a fixed distance from the ground and to reduce damping. The stabilization of this device and the measurement system itself are evaluated and compared to the traditional one.

Fixture is a work-holding or supporting device used in the manufacturing industry to hold the workpiece. Fixtures are used to securely locate (position in a specific location or orientation) and support the work, ensuring that all parts produced using the fixture will maintain conformity and interchangeability. The location of fixture elements is called as fixture layout. The fixture layout plays major role in the work piece deformation during the machining operation. Hence optimization of fixture layout to minimize the work piece deformation is one of the critical aspects in the fixture design process. Minimization the workpiece deformation which is the objective function in the present work is calculated using Finite Element Method (FEM) and the fixture layout is optimized using Discrete fixture layout optimization method (DFLOM), Continuous fixture layout optimization method (CFLOM) and Integrated fixture layout optimization method (IFLOM).The workpiece deformation is minimum in Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based IFLOM is reported for the selected fixture. Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The excessive use of hand-held mobile devices (HHMD) leads to a postural phenomenon known as text neck. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to discuss the anatomical, biomechanical and muscle activation changes within the cervical and thoracic regions associated with the sustained, forward, flexed neck posture, observed with excessive usage of hand-held mobile devices. Additionally, this paper examines the relationship of gender, as well as the effects of carrying backpack loads by youth, on this forward, flexed neck posture. METHODS: Multiple aspects of the text neck position that occur when an individual uses a HHMD are described. RESULTS: Prolonged use of hand-held mobile devices results in adverse anatomical and biomechanical changes in the cervical and thoracic spine, muscular imbalances, and postural compensations, all of which contribute to muscular overuse and fatigue resulting in pain. CONCLUSIONS: Physical therapists must educate their patients about proper posture while using hand-held mobile devices. Proper posture includes: holding the device close to eye level, using the device while standing or sitting and holding the device with a line of sight perpendicular to the surface of the device, using a larger screen, and texting with both hands. Also, because children are using hand held mobile devices at younger ages, parents and teachers must be educated about the dangers of prolonged use of hand-held devices.

Abstract:
An electrostatic discharge (ESD) event can negatively affect the reliability of integrated circuits. Therefore, improving on ESD immunity in high-voltage (HV) n-channel (n) lateral diffused metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor (HV nLDMOS) components through drain-side layout engineering was studied. This involved adjusting the operating voltage, improving the non-uniform turned-on phenomenon, and examining the effects of embedded-device structures on ESD. All proposed architectures for improving ESD immunity in this work were measured and evaluated using a transmission-line pulse system. The corresponding trigger voltage (Vt1), holding voltage (Vh) and secondary breakdown current (It2) results of the tested devices were obtained. This paper first addresses the drift-region length modulation to design different operating voltages, which decreased as the drift region length and shallow trench isolation (STI) length shrunk. When an HV nLDMOS device decreased to the shortest drift region length, the Vt1 and Vh values were closest to 21.85, and 9.27 V, respectively. The It2 value of a low-voltage operated device could be increased to a maximum value of 3.25 A. For the channel width modulation, increasing the layout finger number of an HV LDMOS device did not really help the ESD immunity that because it may suffer the problem of non-uniform turned-on phenomenon. Therefore, adjusting the optimized channel width was the best one method of improvement. Furthermore, to improve the low ESD reliability problem of nLDMOS devices, two structures were used to improve the ESD capability. The first was a drain side—embedded silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR). Here, the SCR PNP-arranged type in the drain side had the best ESD capability because the SCR path was short and had been prior to triggering; however, it also has a latch-up risk and low Vh characteristic. By removing the entire heavily doped drain-side N+ region, the equivalent series resistance in the drain region was increased, so that the It2 performance could be increased from 2.29 A to 3.98 A in the structure of a fully embedded drain-side Schottky diode. This component still has sufficiently high Vh behaviour. Therefore, embedding a full Schottky-diode into an HV nLDMOS in the drain side was the best method and was efficient for improving the ESD/Latch-up abilities of the device. The figure of merit (FOM) of ESD, Latch-up, and cell area considerations improved to approximately 80.86%.

Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are already playing an important role in our daily activities as we use them and rely on them to increase our abilities, connectivity, productivity and quality of life. However, there are still obstacles to achieving a unique interface able to transfer full control to users given the diversity of protocols, properties and specifications in the varied IoT ecosystem. Particularly for the case of home automation systems, there is a high degree of fragmentation that limits interoperability, increasing the complexity and costs of developments and holding back their real potential of positively impacting users. In this article, we propose implementing W3C’s Web of Things Standard supported by home automation ontologies, such as SAREF and UniversAAL, to deploy the Living Lab Gateway that allows users to consume all IoT devices from a smart home, including those physically wired and using KNX® technology. This work, developed under the framework of the EC funded Plan4Act project, includes relevant features such as security, authentication and authorization provision, dynamic configuration and injection of devices, and devices abstraction and mapping into ontologies. Its deployment is explained in two scenarios to show the achieved technology’s degree of integration, the code simplicity for developers and the system’s scalability: one consisted of external hardware interfacing with the smart home, and the other of the injection of a new sensing device. A test was executed providing metrics that indicate that the Living Lab Gateway is competitive in terms of response performance.

Abstract:
The installation procedure of a torpedo anchor is the release of the torpedo from a high enough position from the sea bottom to allow the device to reach the terminal velocity. A sufficient kinetic energy at the bottom is essential for the penetration. Besides this, the anchor has to reach the bottom in an upright position to maximize the final holding power in all directions. The present work addresses two hydrodynamic aspects for the installation design and analysis. The first is the drag evaluation and the second is the directional stability. If the drag is to be kept small, then the terminal velocity should be high. The work shows that parameters like the mass and the shape are essential for this. On the other hand, the shape and mass distribution have a strong influence on the directional stability. One important parameter is the rear line length connected to the anchor. This line is necessary for further connection with the final mooring line and influences both the terminal velocity and the directional stability. The work addresses all these aspects under the light of an innovative model test setup to be performed in a deep ocean basin. This kind of model testing has been conceived specifically to attend the torpedo anchor evaluation.

Abstract:
This paper presents the design and calibration of a new force/tactile sensor for robotic applications. The sensor is suitably designed to provide the robotic grasping device with a sensory system mimicking the human sense of touch, namely, a device sensitive to contact forces, object slip and object geometry. This type of perception information is of paramount importance not only in dexterous manipulation but even in simple grasping tasks, especially when objects are fragile, such that only a minimum amount of grasping force can be applied to hold the object without damaging it. Moreover, sensing only forces and not moments can be very limiting to securely grasp an object when it is grasped far from its center of gravity. Therefore, the perception of torsional moments is a key requirement of the designed sensor. Furthermore, the sensor is also the mechanical interface between the gripper and the manipulated object, therefore its design should consider also the requirements for a correct holding of the object. The most relevant of such requirements is the necessity to hold a torsional moment, therefore a soft distributed contact is necessary. The presence of a soft contact poses a number of challenges in the calibration of the sensor, and that is another contribution of this work. Experimental validation is provided in real grasping tasks with two sensors mounted on an industrial gripper.

Abstract:
Measurement of certain grape quality parameters (sugars, acidity, and pH-value) is essential for the determination of the optimum harvest time. Non-destructive analytical techniques, including near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, can be valid alternatives to traditional analytical methods for the determination of maturity indexes, enabling the possibility of on-field applications. This work aims to study the reliability to monitor spectra changes related with ripening of table grapes and to select optimal wavelengths for the discrimination of bunches from different harvests, in addition to the prediction of total soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, phenols and antioxidant activity of table grapes. Grapes were harvested four times from the same plants at day 0 (I HT), and after 11 (II HT), 27 (III HT) and 48 (IV HT) days. Spectra were acquired from the images obtained using a spectral scanner Vis-NIR (ver 1.4.; DV Srl, Padova, Italy), with a detector in the region between 400-1000 nm principal component analysis was used to remove outliers followed by spectra pre-treatment. The best prediction model was achieved for soluble solids with the regression coefficient values of 0.91 for calibration and 0.88 for validation followed by titratable acidity (0.71 and 0.78) and antioxidant activity (0.68 and 0.62). In addition an excellent correlation was observed between spectra and days before harvest (R2 of 0.98 for calibration and prediction models) indicating that is possible to relate spectra changes with ripening, leading also to the effective discrimination of the fruits from the different harvest times. The results showed that this technique may be a valid support to select the optimal harvest time also based on the prediction of the maturity related constituents.

Abstract:
Critical technique errors are very often performed by patients in the use of Dry Powder Inhalers (DPIs) resulting in a reduction of the clinical efficiency of such medication. Those critical errors include: pure inhalation, non-arming of the device, no exhalation before or after inhalation, and non-holding of breath for 5–10 s between inhalation and exhalation. In this work, an audio-based classification method that assesses patient DPI user technique is presented by extracting the the non-silent audio segments and categorizing them into respiratory sounds. Twenty healthy and non-healthy volunteers used the same placebo inhaler (Bretaris Genuair Inhaler) in order to evaluate the performance of the algorithm. The audio-based method achieved an F1-score of 89.87% in classifying sound events (Actuation, Inhale, Button Press, and Exhale). The significance of the algorithm lies not just on automatic classification but on a post-processing step of peak detection that resulted in an improvement of 5.58% on the F1-score, reaching 94.85%. This method can provide a clinically accurate assessment of the patient’s inhaler use without the supervision of a doctor.

Abstract:
The study on rheocasting has been conducted based on examination for destruction, growth, ripening of solid state in accordance with various changes in cooling. And flow characteristics of slurry for high liquid range rather than practical use has gotten attention. However, the characteristics of existing rheocasting and thixocasting are better mechanical property than competing process die casting but it’s competitiveness as automotive or electric electronic parts which cost of product is important. And productivity also has been decreased. Because die-casting techniques has been advanced such as vacuum, mold auto temperature control etc. Most of the work reported at this conference concerned the semi-solid processing of low melting point alloys, and in particular light alloys of aluminum and magnesium. Therefore, the aim of this study is to devise the original strength of semi-solid process by sequential semi-solid process. The size of primary solid particle and the degree of sphericity as a function of the variation in cooling rate, stirring speed, and holding time were observed. By applying electromagnetic stirring, primary solid particles became finer and rounder relative to as-cast sample. With this background, this research conducted electromagnetic stirring through slurry deliverance of sequential process through A356 alloy electromagnetic stirring pump (30Hz, 130A) with Sequential Semi-Solid Process device to assess the microstructures, primary particle size, degree of sphericity change in A356 alloy in accordance of solid-fraction, stirring speed, and stirring maintenance time.

Home security is something that must be considered for every homeowner. Especially when you have to leave the house empty for work or even on vacation. You must be worried about thieves, lost jewelry, or the safety of other valuables. Therefore, the authors made a door lock security device by utilizing a Bluetooth connection with the Arduino Uno microcontroller. The research method used was direct observation of the selected object, namely the author's house, and conducting literature studies related to the Arduino Uno microcontroller. This door lock tool uses the Arduino Uno as a data processing center, because it is easy to use, and most importantly in the charging program, it does not require a download like a microcontroller in general. This Arduino Uno contains a special program that will give commands to the Servo Motor to open and open the door. Not only opening and opening doors, but this tool can also move the door without us holding or touching it but through a Smartphone. The purpose of this research is to produce a tool that can make it easier to manage or open doors using the Arduino via an Android smartphone using a Bluetooth connection.

Abstract:
Stooping and squatting postures are seen in a number of industries (e.g., agriculture, construction) where workers must work near ground level for extended periods of time. The focus of the current research was to evaluate a knee support device designed to reduce the biomechanical loading of these postures. Ten participants performed a series of sudden loading tasks while in a semisquat posture under two conditions of knee support (no support and fully supported) and two conditions of torso flexion (45 and 60°). A weight was released into the hands of the participants who then came to steady state while maintaining the designated posture. As they performed this task, the EMG responses of the trunk extensors (multifidus and erector spinae) were collected, both during the “sudden loading” phase of the trial as well as the steady weight-holding phase of the trial. As expected, the effects of torso flexion angle showed significant decreases in the activation of the multifidus muscles with greater torso angle (indicating the initiation of the flexion–relaxation response). Interestingly, the results showed that the knee support device had no effect on the activation levels of the sampled muscles, indicating that the loss of the degree of freedom from the ankle joint during the knee support condition had no impact on trunk extensor muscle response. The a priori concern with regard to these supports was that they would tend to focus loading on the low back and therefore would not serve as a potential ergonomic solution for these stooping/semisquatting tasks. Because the results of this study did not support this concern, further development of such an intervention is underway.

Abstract:
Biomass-waste activated carbon/molybdenum oxide/molybdenum carbide ternary composites are prepared using a facile in-situ pyrolysis process in argon ambient with varying mass ratios of ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate to porous peanut shell activated carbon (PAC). The formation of MoO2 and Mo2C nanostructures embedded in the porous carbon framework is confirmed by extensive structural characterization and elemental mapping analysis. The best composite when used as electrodes in a symmetric supercapacitor (PAC/MoO2/Mo2C-1//PAC/MoO2/Mo2C-1) exhibited a good cell capacitance of 115 F g−1 with an associated high specific energy of 51.8 W h kg−1, as well as a specific power of 0.9 kW kg−1 at a cell voltage of 1.8 V at 1 A g−1. Increasing the specific current to 20 A g−1 still showcased a device capable of delivering up to 30 W h kg−1 specific energy and 18 kW kg−1 of specific power. Additionally, with a great cycling stability, a 99.8% coulombic efficiency and capacitance retention of ~83% were recorded for over 25,000 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles at 10 A g−1. The voltage holding test after a 160 h floating time resulted in increase of the specific capacitance from 74.7 to 90 F g−1 at 10 A g−1 for this storage device. The remarkable electrochemical performance is based on the synergistic effect of metal oxide/metal carbide (MoO2/Mo2C) with the interconnected porous carbon. The PAC/MoO2/Mo2C ternary composites highlight promising Mo-based electrode materials suitable for high-performance energy storage. Explicitly, this work also demonstrates a simple and sustainable approach to enhance the electrochemical performance of porous carbon materials.

Abstract:
The possibility that we will have to invest effort influences our future choice behavior. Indeed deciding whether an action is actually worth taking is a key element in the expression of human apathy or inertia. There is a well developed literature on brain activity related to the anticipation of effort, but how effort affects actual choice is less well understood. Furthermore, prior work is largely restricted to mental as opposed to physical effort or has confounded temporal with effortful costs. Here we investigated choice behavior and brain activity, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, in a study where healthy participants are required to make decisions between effortful gripping, where the factors of force (high and low) and reward (high and low) were varied, and a choice of merely holding a grip device for minimal monetary reward. Behaviorally, we show that force level influences the likelihood of choosing an effortful grip. We observed greater activity in the putamen when participants opt to grip an option with low effort compared with when they opt to grip an option with high effort. The results suggest that, over and above a nonspecific role in movement anticipation and salience, the putamen plays a crucial role in computations for choice that involves effort costs.

My creative research looks at how Augmented Reality (AR) can help overcome Learning Disabilities. This focus has directed me to develop a number of ideas and concepts that seek to understand how the addition of information in an augmented view could help tackle some of the challenges different Learning Disabilities present while, at the same time, appealing to a larger audience. This concept was the foundation for creating the immersive mobile application tagAR™, which adds a digital name tag into your augmented view, replacing the traditional “Hello, my name is” sticker version. It allows you to see the names of people around you hovering above their heads at all times. Currently, the app is reliant on the user holding up a mobile device to use the camera so that the application can add the name tags to the view on your screen. As mainstream technology continues to advance, this app will work for wearable devices, eliminating the need to hold up your phone, which is a bit socially awkward. The target audience of the app is those who have trouble remembering people’s names, those who will benefit from having a visual of the names of people around them and for those who want to network and meet new people at social and educational events such as conferences or workshops. Through the design and development of this app, I have been exploring how the social aspect can be extended beyond just the name display and user search features to include a customizable tags that can be searchable, so users can connect, find people with similar interests, share contact information as well as connect with others on multiple social media platforms. I will discuss the research, design and developmental processes that influenced the concept and functionality of this social app using AR.

Abstract:
Synchronized transfers in schedule-based public transport (PT) networks are used to reduce interroute or intermodal passenger transfer waiting time and provide a well-connected service. However, in practice, synchronized transfers do not always materialize because of some stochastic and uncertain factors, such as traffic disturbances and disruptions, fluctuations in passenger demand, and erroneous behavior of PT drivers. As a result, missed direct transfers not only frustrate existing users but also discourage potential passengers from using PT service. This work presents an optimization procedure based on a model predictive control (MPC) to increase the actual occurrence of synchronized transfers in schedule-based PT networks. The procedure aims to reduce the uncertainty of meetings between PT vehicles. MPC uses selected online operational tactics based on real-time data, such as skip stop, speed change, and holding. First a library of operational tactics was built to serve as a basis for the sequential receding horizon control process in the MPC. Then, an event activity network with dynamic moving elements was constructed to represent the logical process of the PT transfer synchronization problem. The MPC procedure for a real-time deployment of operational tactics was explicated. A detailed example was used as an expository device to illustrate the procedure developed, along with a real-life example from Auckland, New Zealand.

Abstract:
Recently, a new breed of mobile virtual reality (dubbed as “EasyVR” in this work), has appeared in the form of conveniently clipping on a non-isolating magnifying lenses on the smartphone, still offering a reasonable level of immersion to using the isolated headset. Furthermore, such a form factor allows the fingers to touch the screen and select objects quite accurately, despite the finger(s) being seen unfocused over the lenses. Many navigation techniques have existed for both casual smartphone 3D applications using the touchscreen and immersive VR environments using the various controllers/sensors. However, no research has focused on the proper navigation interaction technique for a platform like EasyVR which necessitates the use of the touchscreen while holding the display device to the head and looking through the magnifying lenses. To design and propose the most fitting navigation method(s) with EasyVR, we mixed and matched the conventional touchscreen based and headset oriented navigation methods to come up with six viable navigation techniques—more specifically for selecting the travel direction and invoking the movement itself—including the use of head-rotation, on-screen keypads/buttons, one-touch teleport, drag-to-target, and finger gestures. These methods were experimentally compared for their basic usability and the level of immersion in navigating in 3D space with six degrees of freedom. The results provide a valuable guideline for designing/choosing the proper navigation method under different navigational needs of the given VR application.

AbstractIn September 2018, an international meeting of doctors of various disciplines, with expertise in the detection and treatment of DDH, was held in Csolyospalos, Hungary. The aim was to achieve consensus on the detection and early treatment of the condition and to develop a standardized system of teaching and training for hip ultrasound. There was strong agreement that US screening is essential. Specifically the Graf technique was selected as the technique of choice. Universal US screening was strongly favored. Screening should be carried out as soon as possible, but not later than the sixth week of age. US screening is cost-effective, does not result in overtreatment, and contributes to a reduction of long-term consequences. The essential principle of treatment is timely application of a device to achieve reduction, retention and maturation, by holding the hips in flexion, and a safe degree of abduction. It was agreed that the effectiveness of any screening policy depends on the correct scanning technique. Therefore, standardization of teaching and training of the Graf technique is mandatory. A unified teaching policy and materials should be developed for this purpose. Certification, re-certification and audit were discussed. The group, which has been formalized as the International Interdisciplinary Consensus Committee On DDH Evaluation (ICODE), will continue to meet and work towards establishing international consensus on DDH, standardizing and developing teaching and training of the Graf technique for hip US, and maintaining standards for detection and management.

Abstract:
Background Interpersonal communication is critical for a healthy romantic relationship. Emotional disclosure, coupled with perceived partner responsiveness, fosters closeness and adjustment (better mood and relationship satisfaction). On the contrary, holding back from disclosure is associated with increased distress and decreased relationship satisfaction. Prior studies assessing these constructs have been cross-sectional and have utilized global retrospective reports of communication. In addition, studies assessing holding back or perceived partner responsiveness have not taken advantage of smartphone ownership for data collection and have instead required website access or use of a study-provided device. Objective This study aimed to examine the (1) usability and acceptability of a smartphone app designed to assess partner communication, closeness, mood, and relationship satisfaction over 14 days and (2) between-person versus within-person variability of key constructs to inform the utility of their capture via ecological momentary assessment using the participants’ own handheld devices. Methods Adult community volunteers in a married or cohabiting partnered relationship received 2 smartphone prompts per day, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, for 14 days. In each prompt, participants were asked whether they had conversed with their partner either since awakening (afternoon prompt) or since the last assessment (evening prompt). If yes, a series of items assessed enacted communication, perceived partner communication, closeness, mood, and relationship satisfaction (evening only). Participants were interviewed by phone, 1 week after the end of the 14-day phase, to assess perceptions of the app. Content analysis was employed to identify key themes. Results Participants (N=27; mean age 36, SD 12 years; 24/27, 89% female; 25/27, 93% white and 2/27, 7% Hispanic) responded to 79.2% (555/701) of the total prompts sent and completed 553 (78.9%) of those assessments. Of the responded prompts, 79.3% (440/555) were characterized by a report of having conversed with one’s partner. The app was seen as highly convenient (mean 4.15, SD 0.78, scale: 1-5) and easy to use (mean 4.39, SD 0.70, scale: 1-5). Qualitative analyses indicated that participants found the app generally easy to navigate, but the response window too short (45 min) and the random nature of receiving notifications vexing. With regard to the variability of the app-delivered items, intraclass correlation coefficients were generally <0.40, indicating that the majority of the variability in each measure was at the within-person level. Notable exceptions were enacted disclosure and relationship satisfaction. Conclusions The findings of this study support the usability and acceptability of the app, with valuable user input to modify timing windows in future work. The findings also underscore the utility of an intensive repeated-measures approach, given the meaningful day-to-day variation (greater within-person vs between-person variability) in communication and mood.

Abstract:
This paper describes the development of SETUP which is one of the modules of TECHTURN (1), a technologically oriented system for turned components. The SETUP module takes into account the geometrical data of the blank and the component, the technological requirements placed on the component such as surface roughness, concentricity and run-out, and the available work-holding devices for the machine on which the component is to be made. The system automatically determines the following parameters: (a) the work-holding method, that is the use of a chuck, or a chuck and centre or centres; (6) the number of setups required to complete the job; and (c) the clamping positions on the blank and component. In determining this, the system takes into consideration the different clamping devices available on the machine, and their characteristics. If more than one setup is essential, the system tries to balance the stiffnesses of the component in the different setups. This ensures that the stiffness of the component will have a minimum effect when the cutting conditions are calculated. The system can deal with cylindrical blanks as well as castings and forgings, which, often, are of complex shape. To demonstrate the working of the SETUP module, several examples are included.

Abstract:
Launched in 2013, Vine is a popular microblogging service that allows users to record, edit, and share six-second videos that loop ad libitum, until another video is selected. At this time, the communicative, expressive, and semiotic affordances of Vine and similar services have still to be fully explored by users and scholars alike. Through a multimodal analysis approach drawing on New London Group’s (1996) work, this paper investigates how people construct humour on Vine by artfully arranging different modes of expression. The analysis focused on user-enacted humour, as opposed to captured comical scenes or bare samples taken from TV shows or movies. The study hypothesises the social construction of a novel humorous language that draws on extant forms of humour and a variety of modes and techniques derived from audio-visual media and computer-mediated communication, as users inventively exploit the framework provided by the Vine platform. Findings show that users create instant characters to amplify the impact of their solo video recordings, use Vine as a “humorous confessional”, explore the potential of hand-held media by relying on “one hand and face” expressivity (the other hand holding the device for the video “selfie”), and use technology, internet slang, internet acronyms, emoticons/emojis, and hashtags to convey humour and complement the messages of the videos they post on Vine. The goal of this study is an exploratory analysis of humour and its discursive functions in an emergent social medium by considering its affordances, as users find new and creative ways to harness its expressive potential.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to study the qualitative indicators of drainage and waste water from irrigated areas in order to justify the treatment technology. The research was carried out within the Bagayevskaya irrigation system located in the Rostov Region, the Russian Federation. The location of the well is confined to the second terrace above the floodplain of the Western Manych River. The chemical composition of drainage water allows us to refer this water category to the sulfate class, the sodium group of a partially mixed cationic composition. The type of drainage water is sulfate sodium and sulfate calcium. In drainage runoff, there are no chlorine-magnesium waters, even in the autumn period. The content of biogenic elements during the observation period in the investigated wells was within the following limits: phosphates – from 0.04 to 0.75 mg/dm3, ammonium ions – from 0.07 to 1.35 mg/dm3, and nitrates – from 0.05 to 0.43 mg/dm3. An improved treatment method of drainage and waste water for crop irrigation is proposed. It includes the removal of mechanical impurities and petroleum products (in the first stage) on coalescent modules installed directly on the discharge or drainage channel in the form of a framework module and the release of heavy metal ions, organic substances and excess salts (in the second stage) in the sorption block, which includes three sorption layers – S-VERAD, zeolite and quartz in an equal ratio, placed in a grid of a filter cassette of the cassette-holding device.

Abstract:
The article presents for consideration the characteristics of the stability of the boom lifting equipment on a wheeled chassis in the form of mathematical expressions. Mathematical expressions are presented in the form of not cumbersome dependencies on specified parameters. The quality of movement depends on the increase in linear dimensions, masses, moments of inertia, as well as speeds, and other mechanical parameters of the lifting equipment. Achievement of the stability of the outboard boom lifting device is achieved by distributing the load between the jib boom (outboard boom of the lifting device) and the support wheels of the wheeled chassis. We believe that with the existence of a number of concepts with their theories, it is possible to determine the stability of the boom lifting device on a wheeled chassis. It has been found that it is possible to ensure the stability of work by choosing the appropriate values of the mechanical components of all links of the working mechanism for planned working situations. Depending on the possible placement of the lifting device, the stability indicators are changed, and this is confirmed by the mathematical expressions we compiled, which are given in the article. It has been established that by varying the positions and the mass of the constituent elements of the structure of the lifting device, as well as graphically defining the possible options of the load moving, depending on the given length of the jib boom, an expression takes place that makes it possible to determine a number of values of the masses safely lifted by the lifting device. There have been obtained the values of the cargo characteristics of the lifting device necessary for graphic constructions, expressing the relationship between the weight of the cargo and the overhanging of the jib boom with the weight of its elements. The reactions in the joints of the jig boom and the forces in its constituent links can be established from the data of the load characteristics. The desire to ensure maximum stability in the operation of the lifting device imposes restrictions on the control of several mobile operations at the same time, which adversely affects the efficiency of the work process. It has been established that ensuring the stability of operation in the transverse and longitudinal planes of the lifting device is a necessary component of safe operation. According to the dependencies for determining the indicator of cargo balance, it is possible to determine the preliminary installation site of the outriggers of the lifting device. As the results obtained confirm, the stability of the operation of the lifting device in the longitudinal direction is determined similarly to the stability of the operation in the transverse direction and for the nominal weight of the load with the greatest overhanging of the jib boom and the set outriggers. As a result, we note that the ratio of the holding moment relative to the overturning rib created by the weight of the lifting device on the wheeled chassis, taking into account the additional external loads that reduce it and the influence of the platform slope to the overturning moment created by the working load, serves as an indicator of the cargo balance.

Abstract:
Background: Health apps are a booming, yet under-regulated market, with potential consumer harms in privacy and health safety. Regulation of the health app market tends to be siloed, with no single sector holding comprehensive oversight. We sought to explore this phenomenon by critically analysing how the problem of health app regulation is being presented and addressed in the policy arena. Methods: We conducted a critical, qualitative case study of regulation of the Australian mental health app market. We purposively sampled influential policies from government, industry and non-profit organisations that provided oversight of app development, distribution or selection for use. We used Bacchi’s critical, theoretical approach to policy analysis, analysing policy solutions in relation to the ways the underlying problem was presented and discussed. We analysed the ways that policies characterised key stakeholder groups and the rationale policy authors provided for various mechanisms of health app oversight. Results: We identified and analysed 29 policies from Australia and beyond, spanning 5 sectors: medical device, privacy, advertising, finance, and digital content. Policy authors predominantly framed the problem as potential loss of commercial reputations and profits, rather than consumer protection. Policy solutions assigned main responsibility for app oversight to the public, with a heavy onus on consumers to select safe and high-quality apps. Commercial actors, including powerful app distributors and commercial third parties were rarely subjects of policy initiatives, despite having considerable power to affect app user outcomes. Conclusion: A stronger regulatory focus on app distributors and commercial partners may improve consumer privacy and safety. Policy-makers in different sectors should work together to develop an overarching regulatory framework for health apps, with a focus on consumer protection.

Abstract:
Little is known about validity of wrist-worn physical activity monitors during activities when an arm-swing is not present. The purpose of this study was to compare the step-counting validity of wrist-worn activity monitors (Fitbit Charge HR Series 2, ActiGraph GT9X Link, Apple Watch Series 4) during functional physical activities with fixed upper extremities. Tasks included treadmill walking at 3 mph and five free-living tasks (walking with a baby doll on the left hip and the right hip, holding groceries, and pushing a stroller while walking and while jogging). Device step counts were compared to hand-counted steps from GoPro video footage. Fitbit Charge had less error when compared to the left ActiGraph in both stroller walking and jogging, treadmill walking, and grocery walking tasks (p < .001 to .020). For grocery walking, walking with a baby on the right, and walking with a baby on the left, device percentage errors ranged from 0 (0.5%) to −7.6 (15.8%). For stroller jogging, stroller walking, and treadmill walking, device percentage errors ranged from −8.3 (7.3%) to −94.3 (17.9%). Tasks with the hands fixed to an item that also had contact with the floor (stroller and treadmill) had more error than when participants held an item that was not in contact with the floor (doll and groceries). Though wrist-worn, consumer-grade step-counting devices typically undercount steps in general, consumers should be aware that their devices may particularly undercount steps during activities with the hands fixed. This may be especially true with items in contact with the floor.

Abstract:
Vitrification is a method extensively used for preserving oocytes and embryos and is also gaining acceptance for preserving gonadal tissue. Cryopreservation of spermatogonial stem cells is an applicable method for young males seeking fertility preservation before starting a treatment or can be a tool for genetic preservation of rare or high-value animals. The aim of this work was to evaluate the cryopreservation of testicular tissue from young lambs by vitrification using a new device named E.Vit (FertileSafe, Ness Ziona, Israel) that permits all cryopreservation procedures to be performed in straw. The new device consists of a 0.3-mL straw (Cryo Bio System, IMV, L’Aigle, France) with a capsule containing 50-µm pores inserted at one end. Testicular tissue extracts were prepared from testes of slaughtered lambs (n=10, 40 days old), opened by sagittal sectioning with a microblade and collecting small pieces of testicular tissue (1mm3) from the middle part of the rete testis. Three pieces of gonadal tissue were inserted into each E.Vit device. Each straw was sequentially loaded vertically in two 1.5-mL microtubes, which contained the following solutions: first, the equilibrating solution (7.5% dimethyl sulfoxide+7.5% ethylene glycol+20% FCS in TCM-199) for 6min, followed by 90min in the vitrification solution (18% dimethyl sulfoxide+18% ethylene glycol+0.5M Trehalose+BSA in TCM-199). After exposure to the equilibrating solution and vitrification solution, the solutions were removed and the straws were directly loaded into LN2. The warming procedure consisted of placing the straws directly into 5-mL tubes containing 100, 50, and 25% warming solution (1M sucrose in TCM-199+20% FCS) at 38.6°C for 5min each before arrival into the holding medium. Samples were recovered from the straws incubated at 38.6°C in 5% CO2 in air in TCM 199+5% FCS and evaluated at 0 and 2h post-warming for viability using trypan blue staining. Expression of a panel of specific genes (SOD2, HSP90b, BAX, POUF5/OCT4, TERT, CIRBP, KIF11, AR, FSHR) was analysed by real-time PCR in cryopreserved tissue in vitro cultured for 2h post-warming (2hV), in fresh controls immediately after tissue dissection (0hF), and after 2h of in vitro culture (2hF). The majority of cells survived after vitrification, although viability immediately after warming (0hV: 56%±1.45) or after 2h of in vitro culture (IVC) (2hV: 54±7%) was significantly lower compared with non-cryopreserved fresh controls (0hF: 89%±1.45; ANOVA P<0.05). Expression analysis showed specific patterns for the different genes. Notably, BAX transcript abundance was not affected by vitrification or IVC, indicating an acceptable level of stress for the cells. The genes HSP90b and CIRBP were down-regulated in 2hF but increased in 2hV, as expected. Expression of SOD1 and OCT4 was altered by vitrification but not by IVC. Conversely, expression of TERT, KIF11, and AR was affected by both IVC and cryopreservation (ANOVA P<0.05). This novel protocol for testicular tissue cryopreservation of prepubertal animals may be a promising strategy for fertility preservation and can contribute as a new approach in the development of large-scale biodiversity programs.

Abstract:
Various permeating cryoprotectants, such as glycerol and ethylene glycol, have been used in the cryopreservation of embryos to help maintain cellular viability during indefinite and prolonged periods of storage in liquid nitrogen. The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency of glycerol (G) and ethylene glycol (EG) after storage in liquid nitrogen for a considerable period of time before transfer. The work was carried out in Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico. A total of 50 embryos were transferred, 24 Brahman (G) cryopreserved in the 1990s and 26 Brangus (EG) cryopreserved in 2010. Synchronous recipients were selected based on 3 characteristics: body condition (5-7, scale of 1-9), reproductive health, and multiparity. Recipient cows (n=62) were synchronized using a FTET protocol as follows. On Day 0, cows received a progesterone intravaginal device (CIDR) and 2mg of oestradiol benzoate IM. On day 8, the CIDR was removed and all cows received 25mg of dinoprost tromethamine (Lutalyse, Pfizer Animal Health, Montreal, Quebec, Canada), 200IU of eCG, and 0.5mg oestradiol cipionate IM. Day 10 was considered the day of oestrus and embryos were transferred (n=50) to the ipsilateral uterine horn of those recipients with a corpus luteum greater than 1.5cm in diameter on Day 17. The G embryos were produced with 4 bulls whereas the EG embryos were produced with 6 different bulls. The G straws were thawed for 12s in the air plus 12s in 20°C water. Embryos were immersed for 8min in a thawing solution containing 1.0M sucrose (ViGRO One-Step) and then transferred to holding medium (ViGRO Holding) for rehydration before loading into straws for embryo transfer. The EG embryos were thawed by allowing the straws to stand in air for 10s and then immersing them in a 30°C water bath for 10s and were transferred immediately. Pregnancy diagnosis 35 days after the transfer revealed 19 pregnancies of 50 embryos transferred (38%), distributed as 46% embryos in EG (12 pregnant of 26 transferred) and 29% embryos in G (7 pregnant of 24). A Fisher’s exact test was performed showing that no significant difference existed between groups (P>0.05). There was no effect of bull on pregnancy rates, and Brahman breed results by individual bull were 5 pregnancies of 13 (38%), 2 of 6 (33%), 0 of 4 (0%), and 0 of 1 (0%) for bulls I to IV, respectively. Pregnancy rate by Brangus bulls were 6 pregnancies of 7 (86%), 2 of 3 (67%), 2 of 4 (50%), 2 of 4 (50%), 0 of 4 (0%), and 0 of 3 (0%) for bulls 1 to 6, respectively. It is important to remember that the embryos cryopreserved in G remained in the nitrogen tank for more than 30 years, whereas the embryos cryopreserved in EG remained stored in liquid nitrogen for less than 10 years. Although pregnancy rate was numerically lower with Brahman embryos stored in G, pregnancy rates were considered acceptable considering the length of storage. Future research is needed with greater numbers and different breeds to determine whether G or EG will consistently produce higher embryo viability and pregnancies after storage for considerable periods before transfer.

Now a days we all are busy in our regular works, holding the burden of works on our shoulder so, with the help of smart home appliances we can get some secure and an easy way to control the home appliances and we can also know the location information of that particular device. These days lot of researchers are focusing their interest on IoT (Internet of Things). The most vital application where IoT is being mostly used is home automation where all the electronic gadgets are connected to the internet via various layers viz, device level, controller level, restful services level, gateway level and finally the cloud layer. Moreover, gigantic information is being produced by the IoT devices. This information has to be processed and stored in a very effective manner so as to control the home appliances from anywhere in the world. Here we control the home appliances through our mobile by the use of IoT. So, we can control our home appliances very easy and fast compared to the manual operation such as on and off of any device. There might be some relief in our daily life that not to bother about whether we switch off the home appliances or not, instead of it we can check the mobile and solve the situations in short period of time.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Connected bike computers can support professional cyclists in achieving better performances but interacting with them requires taking their hands off the handlebar compromising focus and safety. OBJECTIVE: This research aims at exploring the design of an ergonomic interface based on micro-gestures that can allow cyclists to interact with a device while holding the handlebar. METHODS: Three different studies were conducted with seven professional cyclists adopting the gesture-elicitation technique. One study aimed at eliciting free micro-gestures; a second to evaluate gestures recognizable with a smart glove; the last focused on the gestures recognized through an interactive armband. RESULTS: The analysis of the micro-gestures elicited during these studies allowed producing a first set of guidelines to design gestural interfaces for drop-bars (a specific type of handlebar for road bikes). These guidelines suggest which fingers to use and how to design their movement in order to provide an ergonomic interface. It also introduces the principle of symmetry for the attribution of symbols to symmetric referents. Finally, it provides suggestions on the design of the interactive drop-bar. CONCLUSIONS: The guidelines provided in this paper can support the design of gestural interfaces for professional cyclists that can enhance performance and increase safety.

Abstract:
The presence of hand could alter the energy absorbed in the human head. Hence, a study of the interaction between mobile device antennas and human head in the presence of metallic hand worn jewellery on human hand with different holding ways is investigated. A finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method has been performed by considering an internal PIFA antenna as the radiating source mounted at the top of a commercial clamshell phone positioned nearer the ear. With the introduction of hand-worn jewellery in variation parameters, there were perceptible effects on SAR variation in the human head. SAR distribution in the SAM head was found decreases due to different hand positions. Therefore, the head and in particular the hand may further impairment radiation performance of a mobile device.
