Abstract Sleeping Beauty is a synthetic “cut-and-paste” transposon of the Tc1/mariner class. The Sleeping Beauty transposase (SB) was constructed on the basis of a consensus sequence obtained from an alignment of 12 remnant elements cloned from the genomes of eight different fish species. Transposition of Sleeping Beauty elements has been observed in cultured cells, hepatocytes of adult mice, one-cell mouse embryos, and the germline of mice. SB has potential as a random germline insertional mutagen useful for in vivo gene trapping in mice. Previous work in our lab has demonstrated transpositio

This study aims to examine and assess the efficacy of RCC and its ability to prolong pregnancy until neonatal viability is achieved. One view holds that a sequence of heads meeting certain conditions, a “span,” can be replaced by a single morpheme even when those heads do not form a constituent in the input tree. The other view allows lexical insertion only to target constituents. Project Based Learning (PBL) is a very popular teaching strategy nowadays because it offers a great number of advantages and/or opportunities from a teaching point of view, such as achieving a deeper learning, developing teamwork and leadership skills, or getting the student to take control of what and how to learn. For all these reasons, the authors believe that, in the context of the Master's studies, as the last studies before insertion into working life, the PBL can be a very appropriate teaching methodology, since well thought out it will prepare students for the real situations that they will later experience in their professional lives. The objective of this workis to present the experience of the application of PBL in the development of a common project for four subjects of the University Master in Engineering, Processing and Characterization of Materials, taught at the Polytechnic School of Alcoy, belonging to the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV).

This chapter examines the preface as an interactive process, a journey during which the author strives to win over the reader so as to obtain a favorable reception for his text before the reader actually encounters the body of the work. It considers the importance of Cicero’s insertion of his project into the social institution of amicitia and the way in which texts associated with circles of amicitia establish relations between an author and his readers. It also discusses Cicero’s invoking of tradition in the form of quotations, allusions, and the choice of dialogue characters. To illustrate Cicero’s overall rhetorical strategy and to reconstruct the step-by-step progression that he creates for the ideal reader approaching his work, the chapter offers a reading of the prefaces to Topica and De Senectute.

Abstract:
The draft gave rise to a booming economy of substitute brokers. While the so-called principal and his “alter ego” could, in theory, enter into an economic relationship that affirmed novelistic structures of character and personification, the insertion of middlemen brokers disrupted that possibility and posed the threat of turning substitutes into commodities. Tracking the development of this draft economy, the chapter traces its theorizations in diaries, letters, and poems, as well as in the iconography of the new paper currency, the greenback dollar bill. The chapter focuses in particular on the work of Emily Dickinson, whose career-defining interest in economics, embodiment, and split subjectivity took on additional urgency when her brother Austin procured the services of a substitute who was most likely a formerly enslaved black man. Concerned about the ability of poetic substitution to be representative, Dickinson developed an affirmation of substitution that rejected its monetization.

Continuous authentication systems allow users not to possess or remember something to authenticate themselves. These systems perform a permanent authentication that improves the security level of traditional mechanisms, which just authenticate from time to time. Despite the benefits of continuous authentication, the selection of dimensions and characteristics modelling of user's behaviour, and the creation and management of precise models based on Machine learning, are two important open challenges. This chapter proposes a continuous and adaptive authentication system that uses Machine Learning techniques based on the detection of anomalies. Applications usage and the location of the mobile device are considered to detect abnormal behaviours of users when interacting with the device. The proposed system provides adaptability to behavioural changes through the insertion and elimination of patterns. Finally, a proof of concept and several experiments justify the decisions made during the design and implementation of this work, as well as demonstrates its suitability and performance.

Abstract:
The daunting volumes of images on the Web have become one of the primary sources for online advertising. This work presents a contextual in-image advertising strategy driven by images, which automatically associates relevant ads with an image and seamlessly inserts the ads in the nonintrusive areas within each individual image. In in-image advertising platform, the ads are selected based on not only textual relevance but also visual similarity. The ad insertion positions are detected based on image salience, as well as face detection, to minimize intrusiveness to the user. In addition to general in-image advertising, we also provide a special game-like in-image advertising model dedicated to image on the basis of gaming form, called GameSense, which supports creating a game from an online image and associates relevant ads within the game. We evaluate in-image advertising model on a large-scale real-world images, and demonstrate the effectiveness of in-image advertising platform.

Abstract:
Air-jet filling insertion is the most popular way of insertion systems in weaving. The heart of the air-jet filling insertion is the air flow, which provides the necessary propelling force for the yarn. In this work, the characteristics of airflow in air-jet filling insertion are discussed. The procedure and experimental system that is developed at Auburn University to measure the air flow characteristics is described.

Abstract Insects steer their stingers effortlessly to a specific target and release their venom in a certain path through the skin with minimal pain. These unique traits inspire the idea to develop bioinspired needles to reduce the insertion forces and to decrease the needle path deviation (deflection) for improved targeting accuracy. Our approach in this work focus on the design of mosquito-inspired needle and evaluation of the needle performance using vibration during tissue insertion. The mosquito-inspired needle design specifically consists of maxilla-shaped and labrum-tip design. The inse

Abstract In this article, we propose a new approach to automated assembly. Currently, automated assembly is expensive and difficult because all of the machines required for its implementation impose organization on the parts being assembled. It is this organization that is costly. We investigate an approach that requires less organization and results in assembly as a bulk process. We describe an initial implementation of this approach with a particular parts presentation system. Experiments are performed to determine the part characteristics that promote the success of the implementation. The

Needle insertion is used in many percutaneous surgical procedures such as thermal ablation, biopsy and brachytherapy. Since accurate placement of the needle tip governs the success of these procedures, needle tip tracking is particularly important during the insertion. Many research groups use phantom materials to test their proposed needle insertion technique for either developmental or training purposes. This work suggests new methods to improve visualization of the needle tip inside the phantom materials and thereby an enhanced needle tip tracking. Needle insertion tests were performed in p

Surgical needles are commonly used by medical professionals to reach target locations inside of the body for disease diagnosis or other medical interventions — such as biopsy, brachytheraphy, thermal ablation, and drug delivery [1, 2]. The effectiveness of these procedures depends on the accuracy with which the needle tips reach the targets, such as tumors or certain organs/tissues. In procedures, such as deep brain stimulation and prostate brachytheraphy, it is impossible to reach the surgical sites via simple needle trajectory because of anatomical constraints. This work presents development and testing of image processing algorithms for the automatic detection of landmarks within ultrasound images. The aim was to automate ultrasound analysis, for use during the process of epidural needle insertion. For epidural insertion, ultrasound is increasingly used to guide the needle into the epidural space. Ultrasound can improve the safety of epidural and was recommended by the 2008 NICE guidelines (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). Without using ultrasound, there is no way for the anaesthetist to observe the location of the needle within t

Although needle-based surgeries are considered as minimally invasive surgeries, the damage caused by the needle insertion in soft tissues, namely brain needs to be reduced. Any minor damage, swelling or bleeding in the brain tissue can lead to a long-lasting traumatic brain injury. Our approach to this challenge is to search for a proper solution in nature such as honeybees. In our previous studies, some new bioinspired needles (passive/active) mimicking honeybee stingers have been proposed and tested by conducting needle insertion tests in tissue gel phantoms.
