Abstract:
Building on an emerging literature concerning algorithmic management, this article analyzes the processes by which food delivery platforms control workers and uncovers variation in the extent to which such platforms constrain the freedoms—over schedules and activities—associated with gig work. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 55 respondents working on food delivery platforms, as well as a survey of 955 platform food delivery workers, we find that although all of the food delivery platforms use algorithmic management to assign and evaluate work, there is significant cross-platform variation. Instacart, the largest grocery delivery platform, exerts a type of control we call “algorithmic despotism,” regulating the time and activities of workers more stringently than other platform delivery companies. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of the spectrum of algorithmic control for the future of work.

Abstract:
Abstract Gig Economy platforms have become enmeshed in the fabric of urban sociality. While they have substantially disrupted conditions of labouring, participating in the platform economy has also changed social and moral norms globally. Importantly, what constitutes normative moral and prosocial interpersonal behaviour is key to making platforms function as social environments, but these norms are also constantly challenged and rearticulated through everyday practice among different stakeholders. By drawing on long-term fieldwork across gig economy platforms in urban India, we offer a typology of dynamic social and moral norms around tipping, gratitude, politeness and more that sustain platform interactions. The paper’s aim is to re-centre the vitality and dynamism of everyday media practice, social relationships, and cultural values in shaping platforms. Relatedly, moving beyond binaries of exploitation/empowerment, we show how negotiations between agents with differential power contribute to shifts in platform culture that cannot be fully explained through notions of intentionality.

Abstract:
While work in the media and cultural industries has long been considered precarious, the processes and logics of platformization have injected new sources of instability into the creative labor economy. Among the sources of such insecurity are platforms’ algorithms, which structure the production, circulation, and consumption of cultural content in capricious, enigmatic, even biased ways. Accordingly, cultural producers’ conditions and experiences are increasingly wrought by their understandings—and moreover their anticipation—of platforms’ ever-evolving algorithmic systems. Against this backdrop, I urge fellow researchers of digital culture and society to consider how this mode of “algorithmic precarity” exacerbates the instability of cultural work in the platform era. Considering the volatility of algorithms and the wider cross-platform ecology can help us to develop critical interventions into a creative economy marked by a profoundly uneven allocation of power between platforms and the laborers who populate—and increasingly—power them.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of virtual community trust on work engagement and person–job fit in the context of digital work platforms. The emergence of the platform economy is changing the work environment fundamentally. It has enabled the appearance of alternative work arrangements, such as temporary organizing and the increase of independent contracting, also among highly specialized knowledge workers. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected with an online survey and used to test the relationships between virtual community trust, work engagement and person–job fit. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used to test the goodness of a theoretical model. Findings Based on the data of 127 experts contracting on digital work platforms, virtual community trust positively affects both work engagement and person–job fit. In addition, the relationship between work engagement and person–job fit in the context of digital work platforms is significant and positive. Practical implications This study shows that trust among independent contractors working on digital platforms is important for work engagement and that platform providers can improve work performance through person–job fit by assisting in the creation of trust among members of their platforms. Originality/value The research literature on knowledge work in the changing context of work is scarce, and the role of trust in the context of digital work platforms needs clarification. This paper tests a theoretical model on the effects of trust among highly skilled experts working in the digital platform context as independent contractors and provides evidence for the importance of building trust among members of a virtual work community.

Abstract:
Labour markets are increasingly being organized through digital platforms. These platforms are often characterized by a systematic asymmetry of information and power in favour of platform providers. They rely on an independent workforce that receives low wages and no social security, and at the same time works for its own account and bears the risk independently. Non-standard form of business via digital platforms offers benefits such as more flexible working hours, more favourable prices, and opportunities for income generation, but it also come with challenges related to job stability, benefits, and legal protections. Since there are no official statistics on the size of platform work, a small number of literature deals with the research of the determinants of platform work. The aim of this paper is to determine how factors such as Internet purchases by individuals, GDP per capita, unemployment rate and DESI index affect the size of the platform work. The analysis was conducted on a sample of selected countries of Eastern and Central Europe (CEEC – Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Estonia) and for this purpose Eurostat and ETUI Internet and Platform Work Survey data were used. The results of analysis show that the GDP per capita and Internet purchases by individuals influence the size of platform work in selected countries.

Abstract:
In recent years, "gig work" platforms have gained popularity as a way for individuals to earn money; as of 2021, 16% of Americans have at some point earned money from such platforms. Despite their popularity and their history of unfair data collection practices and worker safety, little is known about the data collected from workers (and users) by gig platforms and about the privacy dark pattern designs present in their apps. This paper presents an empirical measurement of 16 gig work platforms' data practices in the U.S. We analyze what data is collected by these platforms, and how it is shared and used. Finally, we consider how these practices constitute privacy dark patterns. To that end, we develop a novel combination of methods to address gig-worker-specific challenges in experimentation and data collection, enabling the largest in-depth study of such platforms to date. We find extensive data collection and sharing with 60 third parties—including sharing reversible hashes of worker Social Security Numbers (SSNs)—along with dark patterns that subject workers to greater privacy risk and opportunistically use collected data to nag workers in off-platform messages. We conclude this paper with proposed interdisciplinary mitigations for improving gig worker privacy protections. After we disclosed our SSN-related findings to affected platforms, the platforms confirmed that the issue had been mitigated. This is consistent with our independent audit of the affected platforms. Analysis code and redacted datasets will be made available to those who wish to reproduce our findings.

The demand for new welding technologies in civil engineering and transport is increasing. An example of this is the tendency to increase the operating range of a mobile platform mounted on motor vehicles while maintaining the weight of the vehicle. The most commonly used material in the production of mobile platforms are AHSS steels due to their high tensile strength at the level of 1400 MPa. However, the joints created with their use are characterized by much lower strength than the native material. In this article, the most appropriate parameters for welding elements of a mobile platform from difficult-to-use steel AHSS were selected.

Abstract:
Many workers have been drawn to the gig economy by the promise of flexible, autonomous work, but scholars have highlighted how independent working arrangements also come with the drawbacks of precarity. Digital platforms appear to provide an alternative to certain aspects of precarity by helping workers find work consistently and securely. However, these platforms also introduce their own demands and constraints. Drawing on 20 interviews with online freelancers, 19 interviews with corresponding clients and a first-hand walkthrough of the Upwork platform, we identify critical literacies (what we call gig literacies), which are emerging around online freelancing. We find that gig workers must adapt their skills and work strategies in order to leverage platforms creatively and productively, and as a component of their ‘personal holding environment’. This involves not only using the resources provided by the platform effectively, but also negotiating or working around its imposed structures and control mechanisms.

Abstract:
The sociology of work paid close attention to the factory and office as the physical and social space where the labor process was directly carried out and where workers faced managerial supervision, control, and power. The article discusses new decentralized forms of labor organization based on digital platforms which connect self-employed workers with clients and customers. The rapid spread of platforms in many spheres of the economy (from the IT sector and creative industries to consumer services, taxi services, and delivery) puts the task of rethinking the concepts of labor sociology, labor legislation and social policy models on the agenda. Generally, organizational decentralization was discussed in the context of increasing the autonomy of workers. However, information and communication technologies made possible not only the effective coordination of dispersed workers, but also tight algorithmic control. Workers who are outside the enterprise, both physically and legally, nevertheless experience a strong influence of digital platforms on the key conditions of their work and employment. The article discusses the nature and types of digital work platforms, sources of platform power, forms of algorithmic management, the role of user ratings, as well as the possible regulation of platform employment. The author conceptualizes the problems of labor autonomy and control within the typology of platforms: marketplace vs. shadow corporation.

Abstract:
With the aging society in Germany, the demand for informal care in private households is rising. This has led to a growing market for digital platforms that broker informal care services. Research shows that workers in elderly care, as a sub-sector of care work, often embody a work ethic centered on caring and helpfulness. However, this strong ethic can result in self-exploitation. Despite prior insights, the mediating role of digital platforms and their repercussions on work ethics remain underexplored. Therefore, this article asks how workers’ ethics of care unfold within the design of platforms in platform-mediated care. Ten narrative-oriented, in-depth interviews with platform workers on two platforms were conducted. Findings reveal that care workers in this field of platform work have a work ethic of care strongly oriented towards identification with the role of caregiver and the needs of the client. The open and unstructured design of these platforms—where worker qualifications are rarely verified to attract large numbers—devalues and informalizes care work. The lack of recognition as a legitimate profession perpetuates the perception of care work as unskilled, diminishing its professional status and fostering feelings of unprofessionalism and self-exploitation.

Abstract:
This qualitative study is constructive in its nature and it aims to find how remote workers perceive usability of communication features across different tools and platforms. Answering two main research questions; How do remote users perceive usability of communication features across different communication tools and platforms? and How, according to users, that features can be improved?, this research aims to link them with scholarly literature, find potential knowledge gaps and highlight improvement areas. Learnability, efficiency, universality and general satisfaction are researched within five participants, coming from different sectors and occupations. Usability in IS context connects ICT with HCI. Trends, challenges and solutions in remote work field lead us to different practices in work and knowledge sharing. Thematic analysis brings seven main themes that show satisfactory results in general. However, dissatisfaction is addressed to efficiency and universality with functionality of communication tools and platforms which falls within ICT, and learnability within its human component, HCI. Furthermore, three step solution is proposed: organizational readiness, standards in communication practice and soft skills. Contributions of this research confirm importance of human component that defines usability in remote field. General usability and satisfaction with ICT and its components is confirmed and improvement areas are addressed within HCI. This research serves as a good base for research of usability of same communication features across different channels however, comparing on-site and remote workers within specific fields.

Abstract:
Social media effects may affect self-perception and the way media users live their offline lives. The purpose of this essay was to examine the phenomenon of social media saturation in order to understand the possible risks to the development of human identity during the adolescent period. Hence, these risks may be generated by being exposed to social comparison, cyberbullying, self-validation, and self-perception in a sensitive age when self-image is still fragile and being formed. The purpose of this essay is to examine the psychological tendencies of human beings while interacting with their peers on social media platforms. Hence, this will give us a clearer view of what would be achieved by conducting interviews. Moreover, a selection of theories will be applied to those interviews in order to associate those theories with what has been said by respondents. Hence, Meyrowitz’s theory will be used in relation to understanding the identity adaptation to online connection and linked to Goffman’s discussions of “onstage” and “backstage” (Meyrowitz, 1985: 5). After this, the essay will investigate how users’ self-perception and social comparison are enacted while socializing on social media platforms. Furthermore, this essay sheds the light on how identity is constructed online in the sense of belonging to a community on a social media platform as well as of gratification coming from peer validation in a virtual community. To be able to explain this, the “Social Identity Theory” will, therefore, be discussed (Teo, Matti, et al, 2017: 23). This will be discussed by mentioning theories like “Mediatization” (Couldry & Hepp, 2013). And lastly, the sociological concept of Habitus, minted by Pierre Bourdieu will demonstrate the process of adaptation towards unspoken social codes existing in virtual communities (Markham, 2017: 55). As found in the four qualitative semi-structured interviews with social media users, respondents are surrounding themselves with like-minded social groups which provide them with confidence about their own system of beliefs. Nevertheless, their perspectives are often marked by notable social pessimism and a lack of incentive to engage in conflictual interactions with others on social media. The results pointed out the perception among the interviewees that the impact of social media on identity formation is largely confined to adolescent users. Many users self-report significant daily screen time and are aware of the risks of social bubbles. Most of the respondents denied being subjected to cyberbullying, while they were surfing on social media, so the respondents’ physical lives were not affected by cyberbullying even for those who mentioned their exposure to cyberbullying. All the respondents expressed a sense of jealousy to some extent, even though some of them showed awareness of the thought that people post their lives from a perfect angle while hiding the flaws and not showing the imperfections of their lives on social media. Lastly, social comparison was an incentive feeling affected most of the respondents, and in their own experience, social media affected their character development and self-perception since they were exposed to social media at an adolescent age.

Abstract:
This dissertation had as objective to examine the relation between women participation in masculine work ambient and gender. Our case study is focused on the research of offshore women, women whose work is executed on petroleum platforms. In this work situation, they leave the daily routine they use to have onshore to spend fourteen days onboard, a place where home and work are mingled. For such purposes, we selected a qualitative analysis, based on offshore womens point of view about the relation of their lives in and outside the platform. Therefore, we firstly undertook a discussion which main themes were the imbrications between gender and work, and we assumed as conceptual-theoretic references trajectory and habitus concepts, formulated by Pierre Bourdieu. Through semi-structured interviews and internet and personal talks, we collected offshore women testimonial, which permitted us to analyze perceptions, meanings and representations in their speech. Thus, we observed that there is a close relation between paid work and family life in offshore womens choices and opinions. They see woman presence in family life as fundamental; hence, they perceive offshore work as incompatible to the responsibilities they take in family, particularly in motherhood. Offshore women believe wife and husband can find alternatives in case the woman doesnt leave the platform, but such alternatives are shown as unviable when children come. They value paid work, and are not willing to leave it any time during their trajectories: what they desire is stopping embarking in order to conciliate motherhood and work. In these terms, the entrance of women in labor market and their participation in male dominant ambient dont lead them into a total adhesion to more egalitarian gender values, but into a (re)actualization of male and female traditional roles, based on the experiences they have been facing.

Abstract:
The equity crowdfunding market has since the financial crisis in 2008 become an important source of alternative financing in Sweden. The equity crowdfunding platforms constitute the market and are responsible for governing the investment relationships. However, the market is not regulated, and in the spring of 2018 the Swedish government proposed regulatory changes for the platforms to impact the problem of information asymmetry. There are different approaches on how to impact the problem, and therefore the thesis sets out to understand how the equity crowdfunding platforms within the Swedish market work to impact information asymmetry. Empirical data has been collected from five different Swedish equity crowdfunding platforms. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals whose work is connected to governing and impacting information asymmetry. The analysis of the empirical findings identifies five main reasons for the arise of information asymmetry and the platforms work to control and reduce information asymmetry by mitigation strategies, investor communication and effective signaling. The findings indicate that there is a trade-off between controlling information asymmetry and making the financing method accessible within the market. This study contributes to the understanding of how equity crowdfunding platforms work to impact information asymmetry within the Swedish market.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to study how the top management and employees in banks experience their work with customer e-loyalty in digital settings, both individually and in relation to each other. Today's bank customers desire freedom in where they conduct their business and do at the same time require a deeper personal relationship with their bank advisors. The adjustments to balance these two requirements have been a challenge for many banks. While satisfied customers often create loyalty, banks in Sweden have during the recent years experienced decreasing customer satisfaction. The digitalization within the banking sector will continue to have a big impact on the relationship between banks and their customers. By adapting a qualitative approach, the thesis aims to contribute with knowledge of how the top management and employees work with and perceive the impact digitalization has on e-loyalty. The thesis provides academic contributions, such as the insight in how top management and employees in two of Sweden’s biggest banks perceive their work with customer e-loyalty. The second contribution to the literature is a suggestion to development of the 8C model. The practical contribution is what the top management in banks should consider when mediating e-loyalty strategies to employees

Abstract:
The race towards more processing power between all different hardware manufacturers has in recent years faced deep changes. We see nowadays a huge development in the use of parallel machines with more and more cores and increasingly complex architectures. It seems now clear that we will witness in a near future the development of cheap Network On Chip computers. Executing parallel applications on such machines raises several problems. Amongst them we take in this work interest in the problem of scheduling a set of tasks on a set of computing resources. Between all existing methods we can generally distinguish on-line or off-line algorithms. On-line algorithms like work-stealing present the advantage to work without informations on hardware or tasks durations but do not generally achieve an efficient control of communications. In this book we take interest in on-line tasks scheduling on complex platforms where networking can impact (through congestion) performance. More precisely, we propose several new scheduling algorithms based on work-stealing targeting two different configurations. In a first study, we consider applications whose dependency graph is known in advance. By taking advantage of this information we manage to limit the amount of data transfered and thus to achieve high performance and even outperform the best known off-line algorithms. Concurrently to that, we also study possible optimisations in the case where knowledge of platform topology is available. We show again that it is possible to use this information to enhance performance. Our work allows therefore to extend the application field of scheduling algorithms towards more complex architectures and we hope will allow a better use of tomorrow's machine

This study aims to introduce a debate on issues related to legislation focused on the worker of nursing aquaviário, with emphasis on the protection of the health of workers in nursing inserted into platforms and ships of oil exploration of the Brazilian coast. The method used is the document analysis. It is characteristic of desk research to define the source of collecting data, which should be limited to documents, written or not, is what is called primary sources. Examined is, initially, as primary source, the following legal documents labor legislation: the Rules Regulamentadoras Labor Urban (NR-30 and NR-32), the resolution COFEN-146 and Decree No. 2671, of 15 July 1998 of COFEN and NORMAM. Still, as international sources, it is the Conventions 164 and 147 of the ILO. It was noted that sixteen of the standards studied (72.7%) have defined his life from the nineties, although there since 1910, according to the International Convention for Unification of Certain Rules in Respect of Abalroamento, Assistance and Rescue Marine-Brussels ( on September 23, 1910). However, the absolute majority of these devices does not refer to the worker of nursing aquaviário, with the exception of the Brazilian Code of Occupations, a standard that defines only a few complementary skills of the nurses board. It is concluded that there is a shortage of legal instruments to this sector and the need to call for the creation of more specific rules for the nurses aquaviário and, consequently, on the protection of the health of this training.

Abstract:
The future of work is at the centre of debates related to the emerging digital society. Concerns range from the inclusion, equity, and dignity of those at the far end of the value chain, who participate on and off platforms, often in the shadows, invisible to policymakers, designers, and consumers. Precarity and informality characterize this largely female workforce, across sectors ranging from artisanal work to salon services to ride hailing and construction. A feminist reimagining of the futures of work—what we term as “FemWork” —is the need of the day and should manifest in multiple and various forms, placing the worker at the core and drawing on her experiences, aspirations, and realities. This volume offers grounded insights from academic, activist, legal, development and design perspectives that can help us think through these inclusive futures and possibly create digital, social, and governance infrastructures of work that are fairer and more meaningful.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper investigates the development of an open innovation platform in the furniture and furnishing industry, emphasizing the significance of digital sovereignty in digital platform design. The study involved various aspects, starting with the identification of stakeholders and their influences on the digital platform. Understanding the roles and interests of different stakeholders is crucial for designing effective governance mechanisms and ensuring inclusivity. Furthermore, an analysis of necessary extensions to existing business models was conducted. An input and output flow analysis elucidates knowledge generation and utilization. Clear requirements, including digital sovereignty, ensure data protection and privacy. The findings revealed that an Open Innovation platform can be conceptualized as a product-service system, combining the functionalities of a product with the administration and moderation services. This perspective facilitated a comprehensive understanding of the platform's interactions with stakeholders and allowed for the integration of digital sovereignty measures from the outset. The approach fosters stakeholder understanding and early integration of digital sovereignty measures and offers insights into designing digital platforms with digital sovereignty in focus. It emphasizes the need for early consideration and the link between research and commercial utilization.

Abstract:
AbstractThe platform economy is growing exponentially while creating expectations for its potential to contribute to sustainable development. Despite this, most research studies have concentrated on well-known models such as Uber and Airbnb, dismissing platform alternatives. Thus, research aimed at showing the potential contribution of each platform’s business model to sustainable development is needed. Moreover, there is a gap in literature studying—thorough empirical research—to what extent platform cooperatives are an alternative to unicorn platforms in terms of working conditions. This chapter summarises the research performed in the PLUS project by Dimmons research group. It puts forward a framework to differentiate platform models, which considers governance, economic sustainability, technological and data policies, social responsibility, and external impact dimensions. This framework was tested with an empirical analysis of 60 platforms and a deep study of three alternatives to platform capitalism: Fairbnb, Katuma, and Smart. The research paper found that a sustainable design of a platform economy promotes sustainable development, and showed in what aspects the three platforms studied may be considered an alternative to unicorn platforms in terms of gender equality, work-life balance, and training opportunities.

Abstract:
This paper discusses digital service platforms as critical infrastructures of daily life and their role in providing essential goods and services: care work in cities of the Global North, and water in rural Kenya. Using two very different examples, platforms as universal technological solutions that are generally applicable to neoliberal societies are scrutinized and platformed services are reread as reflective of elsewhere. Thinking from the Kenyan example, the contribution suggests to redefine the master narrative of the platforms' convenient on-demand services towards a flexibility of situation specific reasoning that is sensitive to people's situated needs in platformed societies.

<p>The JR Shibuya Station Renovation Project is a major project that involves demolishing the existing station building and constructing a new large-scale station building. In this project, a composite viaduct was constructed as part of the station building, and the tracks were moved in order to place the two separate platforms next to each other.</p><p>Since constructing the composite viaduct and relocating the platforms separately would take a lot of time, we carried out the construction of viaduct and the relocation of the tracks simultaneously. Therefore, a construction method was devised and implemented that uses the temporary steel girders (referred to as “construction girders”) constructed to create the viaduct to move the tracks.</p>

Abstract:
The basic tendency in the development of labor law in the 21st century is digitization of work. Defined as the development and application of information and communication technologies in the organization and performance of work tasks, digitalization of work brings with it multitude of positive and negative challenges. One of the most important is the legal regulation of digital work. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, such legal regulation does not exist, so workers who work on digital work platforms are formally and legally not recognized in domestic legislation. Although there are no statistical data on the share of "platform workers" in the workforce of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the fact is that digital work platforms are an integral part of modern life and that, following global trends, an increase in the number of employees trough digital platforms is expected. That is why correct classification and legal regulation of the working status of those workers is very important question that the domestic legislator will have to answer in framework of harmonizing labor legislation with the legal acquis of European Union. Wheter that answer will come in the form of amendments in the area of the labor market or adoption of new legal regulation, remains to be seen.

Abstract:
As part of the initiative "Strategic Networking Platforms in the Context of Major Societal Challenges", the BMBWF funded four networking platforms, starting in mid-2016: - Network Ageing - Ageing and Demographic Change as Challenge and Opportunity". - National networking platform for personalised medicine (ÖPPM) - National networking platform for "Sustainable Water Systems - National Networking Platform for "European and International Climate Agendas The three-year funding periods of these networking platforms will end in 2020 at the latest. Therefore, the EU and OECD Research Policy Division (Division V) responsible for the networking platforms OECD Research Policy (Department V/5) of the BMBWF commissioned Technopolis Group Austria to evaluate the National Networking Platforms of the BMBWF. The aim was to analyse what has been achieved so far and, on this basis, to develop recommendations for future work, both individually for each funded networking platform and for the design and management of the platform initiative itself by the BMBWF - with regard to the latter, the four funded networking platforms serve as pilot projects.

On a typical construction site, the provision of a safe surface to work on involves and affects a number of the contracting parties (the client; principal designer; general contractor; specialty contractor; platform designer; platform installer or earthworks contractor; platform tester and platform maintainer), and as a consequence, the organisation of its design, installation and maintenance can be complex. As it concerns money and liability it is often a contentious issue, but nonetheless one that needs to be addressed. This document takes each step in turn and describes what good practice is, with reference to documents and resources that have been made available through the EFFC and DFI. In compiling this information responses have been collated from foundation contractors from; France, United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Hungary, Italy and Sweden, USA and Canada.

Abstract:
This working paper provides a summary assessment of the existing literature and data on digital forms of employment internationally. It illustrates the variability in how it is defined, how it is growing and what kind of risks are associated with these developments. Evaluation of these types of jobs is divided. On one hand, optimists point to the attractions and relative ease in finding employment on digital platforms; on the other hand, more critical perspectives argue that these employment contracts can result in exclusion from social protection systems. The evidence indicates that while overall a relatively small proportion of all employment digital work is growing, both on platforms as well as adoption amongst more traditional companies. The characteristics of digital workers can vary by region and occupation. Overall, they tend to be predominantly younger and more likely male, with a growing number of women albeit in particular occupations. Skills and earnings levels vary but the key issues of disputes is around pay, conditions and employment status. The consequences of this form of work for those with lower skilled digital employment can undermine their social citizenship: they lack comparable employment rights, or when unemployed entitlement to adequate social protection. The potential polarisation effects of digital exclusion and deficits will severely hamper the wider benefits of transparency offered by these technologies. During the pandemic these trends have become more apparent. The imbalance of bargaining power and regulatory governance to bridge gaps in citizenship entitlements undermines the collective potential of policy makers and trade unions to address these challenges. Nevertheless, there is emerging evidence of innovative challenges and contestation of these gaps by both union organisations and national regulators attempts to adapt social protection

Abstract:
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is responsible for public health in relation to food in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It makes sure that people can trust that the food they buy and eat is safe and is what it says it is. As part of this responsibility, the FSA works to understand the continuing evolution of the food landscape to identify opportunities to improve standards of food safety and/or authenticity. As well as any new or magnified risks from which consumers should be protected. One area that has evolved rapidly is that of digital platforms in the food and drink industry. Consumers are increasingly purchasing food via third party intermediaries, known as ‘aggregators’, from a range of vendors. Digital platforms remain a relatively new concept, with many launching in the past decade. As such, there has been a knowledge gap in government about how these platforms work and how they impact the landscape in which they operate.
