Abstract:
This qualitative study is constructive in its nature and it aims to find how remote workers perceive usability of communication features across different tools and platforms. Answering two main research questions; How do remote users perceive usability of communication features across different communication tools and platforms? and How, according to users, that features can be improved?, this research aims to link them with scholarly literature, find potential knowledge gaps and highlight improvement areas. Learnability, efficiency, universality and general satisfaction are researched within five participants, coming from different sectors and occupations. Usability in IS context connects ICT with HCI. Trends, challenges and solutions in remote work field lead us to different practices in work and knowledge sharing. Thematic analysis brings seven main themes that show satisfactory results in general. However, dissatisfaction is addressed to efficiency and universality with functionality of communication tools and platforms which falls within ICT, and learnability within its human component, HCI. Furthermore, three step solution is proposed: organizational readiness, standards in communication practice and soft skills. Contributions of this research confirm importance of human component that defines usability in remote field. General usability and satisfaction with ICT and its components is confirmed and improvement areas are addressed within HCI. This research serves as a good base for research of usability of same communication features across different channels however, comparing on-site and remote workers within specific fields.

Abstract:
Social media effects may affect self-perception and the way media users live their offline lives. The purpose of this essay was to examine the phenomenon of social media saturation in order to understand the possible risks to the development of human identity during the adolescent period. Hence, these risks may be generated by being exposed to social comparison, cyberbullying, self-validation, and self-perception in a sensitive age when self-image is still fragile and being formed. The purpose of this essay is to examine the psychological tendencies of human beings while interacting with their peers on social media platforms. Hence, this will give us a clearer view of what would be achieved by conducting interviews. Moreover, a selection of theories will be applied to those interviews in order to associate those theories with what has been said by respondents. Hence, Meyrowitz’s theory will be used in relation to  understanding the identity adaptation to online connection and linked to Goffman’s discussions of “onstage” and “backstage” (Meyrowitz, 1985: 5). After this, the essay will investigate how users’ self-perception and social comparison are enacted while socializing on social media platforms. Furthermore, this essay sheds the light on how identity is constructed online in the sense of belonging to a community on a social media platform as well as of gratification coming from peer validation in a virtual community. To be able to explain this, the “Social Identity Theory” will, therefore, be discussed (Teo, Matti, et al, 2017: 23). This will be discussed by mentioning theories like “Mediatization” (Couldry & Hepp, 2013). And lastly, the sociological concept of Habitus, minted by Pierre Bourdieu will demonstrate the process of adaptation towards unspoken social codes existing in virtual communities (Markham, 2017: 55).  As found in the four qualitative semi-structured interviews with social media users, respondents are surrounding themselves with like-minded social groups which provide them with confidence about their own system of beliefs. Nevertheless, their perspectives are often marked by notable social pessimism and a lack of incentive to engage in conflictual interactions with others on social media. The results pointed out the perception among the interviewees that the impact of social media on identity formation is largely confined to adolescent users. Many users self-report significant daily screen time and are aware of the risks of social bubbles. Most of the respondents denied being subjected to cyberbullying, while they were surfing on social media, so the respondents’ physical lives were not affected by cyberbullying even for those who mentioned their exposure to cyberbullying. All the respondents expressed a sense of jealousy to some extent, even though some of them showed awareness of the thought that people post their lives from a perfect angle while hiding the flaws and not showing the imperfections of their lives on social media. Lastly, social comparison was an incentive feeling affected most of the respondents, and in their own experience, social media affected their character development and self-perception since they were exposed to social media at an adolescent age.

Abstract:
This dissertation had as objective to examine the relation between women participation in masculine work ambient and gender. Our case study is focused on the research of offshore women, women whose work is executed on petroleum platforms. In this work situation, they leave the daily routine they use to have onshore to spend fourteen days onboard, a place where home and work are mingled. For such purposes, we selected a qualitative analysis, based on offshore womens point of view about the relation of their lives in and outside the platform. Therefore, we firstly undertook a discussion which main themes were the imbrications between gender and work, and we assumed as conceptual-theoretic references trajectory and habitus concepts, formulated by Pierre Bourdieu. Through semi-structured interviews and internet and personal talks, we collected offshore women testimonial, which permitted us to analyze perceptions, meanings and representations in their speech. Thus, we observed that there is a close relation between paid work and family life in offshore womens choices and opinions. They see woman presence in family life as fundamental; hence, they perceive offshore work as incompatible to the responsibilities they take in family, particularly in motherhood. Offshore women believe wife and husband can find alternatives in case the woman doesnt leave the platform, but such alternatives are shown as unviable when children come. They value paid work, and are not willing to leave it any time during their trajectories: what they desire is stopping embarking in order to conciliate motherhood and work. In these terms, the entrance of women in labor market and their participation in male dominant ambient dont lead them into a total adhesion to more egalitarian gender values, but into a (re)actualization of male and female traditional roles, based on the experiences they have been facing.

Wahlberg, Niklas, and Alexander Olsson. "Impacting Information Asymmetry within the Swedish Equity Crowdfunding Market : An aggregated approach on how equity crowdfunding platforms work to govern, control and reduce information asymmetry." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-354377.

Abstract:
The equity crowdfunding market has since the financial crisis in 2008 become an important source of alternative financing in Sweden. The equity crowdfunding platforms constitute the market and are responsible for governing the investment relationships. However, the market is not regulated, and in the spring of 2018 the Swedish government proposed regulatory changes for the platforms to impact the problem of information asymmetry. There are different approaches on how to impact the problem, and therefore the thesis sets out to understand how the equity crowdfunding platforms within the Swedish market work to impact information asymmetry.  Empirical data has been collected from five different Swedish equity crowdfunding platforms. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals whose work is connected to governing and impacting information asymmetry. The analysis of the empirical findings identifies five main reasons for the arise of information asymmetry and the platforms work to control and reduce information asymmetry by mitigation strategies, investor communication and effective signaling. The findings indicate that there is a trade-off between controlling information asymmetry and making the financing method accessible within the market. This study contributes to the understanding of how equity crowdfunding platforms work to impact information asymmetry within the Swedish market.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to study how the top management and employees in banks experience their work with customer e-loyalty in digital settings, both individually and in relation to each other. Today's bank customers desire freedom in where they conduct their business and do at the same time require a deeper personal relationship with their bank advisors. The adjustments to balance these two requirements have been a challenge for many banks. While satisfied customers often create loyalty, banks in Sweden have during the recent years experienced decreasing customer satisfaction. The digitalization within the banking sector will continue to have a big impact on the relationship between banks and their customers. By adapting a qualitative approach, the thesis aims to contribute with knowledge of how the top management and employees work with and perceive the impact digitalization has on e-loyalty. The thesis provides academic contributions, such as the insight in how top management and employees in two of Sweden’s biggest banks perceive their work with customer e-loyalty. The second contribution to the literature is a suggestion to development of the 8C model. The practical contribution is what the top management in banks should consider when mediating e-loyalty strategies to employees

Abstract:
The race towards more processing power between all different hardware manufacturers has in recent years faced deep changes. We see nowadays a huge development in the use of parallel machines with more and more cores and increasingly complex architectures. It seems now clear that we will witness in a near future the development of cheap Network On Chip computers. Executing parallel applications on such machines raises several problems. Amongst them we take in this work interest in the problem of scheduling a set of tasks on a set of computing resources. Between all existing methods we can generally distinguish on-line or off-line algorithms. On-line algorithms like work-stealing present the advantage to work without informations on hardware or tasks durations but do not generally achieve an efficient control of communications. In this book we take interest in on-line tasks scheduling on complex platforms where networking can impact (through congestion) performance. More precisely, we propose several new scheduling algorithms based on work-stealing targeting two different configurations. In a first study, we consider applications whose dependency graph is known in advance. By taking advantage of this information we manage to limit the amount of data transfered and thus to achieve high performance and even outperform the best known off-line algorithms. Concurrently to that, we also study possible optimisations in the case where knowledge of platform topology is available. We show again that it is possible to use this information to enhance performance. Our work allows therefore to extend the application field of scheduling algorithms towards more complex architectures and we hope will allow a better use of tomorrow's machine

Abstract:
O método utilizado é a análise documental. This study aims to introduce a debate on issues related to legislation focused on the worker of nursing aquaviário, with emphasis on the protection of the health of workers in nursing inserted into platforms and ships of oil exploration of the Brazilian coast. The method used is the document analysis. It is characteristic of desk research to define the source of collecting data, which should be limited to documents, written or not, is what is called primary sources. Examined is, initially, as primary source, the following legal documents labor legislation: the Rules Regulamentadoras Labor Urban (NR-30 and NR-32), the resolution COFEN-146 and Decree No. 2671, of 15 July 1998 of COFEN and NORMAM. Still, as international sources, it is the Conventions 164 and 147 of the ILO. It was noted that sixteen of the standards studied (72.7%) have defined his life from the nineties, although there since 1910, according to the International Convention for Unification of Certain Rules in Respect of Abalroamento, Assistance and Rescue Marine-Brussels ( on September 23, 1910). However, the absolute majority of these devices does not refer to the worker of nursing aquaviário, with the exception of the Brazilian Code of Occupations, a standard that defines only a few complementary skills of the nurses board. It is concluded that there is a shortage of legal instruments to this sector and the need to call for the creation of more specific rules for the nurses aquaviário and, consequently, on the protection of the health of this training.

This thesis provides contemporary insights how knowledge management can be approached by a knowledge-intensive organisation. Knowledge workers today have unprecedented means to collaborate in different spaces of knowledge sharing. By analysing the case of QlikTech, results indicate that knowledge management is an integral part of knowledge-intensive organisations.By adapting an interpretive approach, eight semi-structured qualitative interviews with employees at QlikTech are analysed to find out how different information systems support different knowledge and collaboration processes. The interviews are complemented by on-the-job observations and analysis of documents to reach deeper understanding. Results indicate that users use systems with predefined structures to document official knowledge, and systems with emergent structures for informal dialogue and collaboration. Different systems complement each other, as knowledge is transferred between systems. Grass root initiated information systems compensate for the gap between official technology implementations and the social communication needs.Technology and practice co-evolve. As discussions, ideas, perspectives and context can be sustained in emergent social software platforms, such as Salesforce.com, complex problem-solving can be enabled in computer-supported cooperative work. These platforms minimise the gap between the formal and social communication within communities of practice, which facilitates organisational learning. At QlikTech, digital communities emerge organically over time. Organisations can use data and text mining, natural language processing and information extraction technologies to bridge fragmented communities to gain the capabilities to access dispersed knowledge sources through search. Organisations can add a social layer of these fragmented back-end systems, designed for building cross-functional employee-facing communities that drive collaboration and accelerate innovation in the workplace.

Abstract:
The platform economy has attracted interest from policy makers and academics regarding its regulation, job quality, the future of work and the impact of technology on employment. Yet, two key research gaps are the lack of research on the relationship between the platform economy and gender roles, and on the work–life balance of platform workers. This thesis responds to calls for more research in these areas by examining the nature of the relationship between fathers working in the platform economy, flexible work and gender equality. It also explores if and how the work provides fathers with flexibility to meet their paid work and unpaid care demands. The thesis answers the research question: What is the nature of the relationship between men who are fathers working in the platform economy, flexible work and gender equality? It is a case study of male rideshare drivers in Australia, specifically those who are driving Uber, and who are also fathers. It used a mixed-methods approach of document analysis, an online survey of 304 drivers and one- on-one semi-structured interviews with 39 drivers to investigate why fathers have turned to driving Uber, how they are balancing their paid and unpaid work, the subsequent impact on gender roles in their households, and how they are experiencing the work flexibility of rideshare driving. Four main findings emerge. First, the fathers in this study were driving Uber for two main reasons: work flexibility and earning flexibility. Second, in line with sociological theories that gender roles are dynamic this study also proposes that the platform economy may impact gender roles. Third, rideshare driving is providing fathers with a form of relative flexibility, which comes with constraints yet provides more work flexibility than their other labour market options. Last, that driving Uber provides an earning flexibility which enables fathers to adjust their hours driving Uber to meet their income needs and is unique to rideshare driving

The aim of this research is to discover whether and how 'critical performance pedagogy' (CPP) is a strategy for students to think critically about the ways they link theory and practice in social work using theatrical performance as a platform. Using critical thematic and critical discourse analysis of qualitative interviews, video recorded performances and corresponding texts, this research has uncovered the various ways CPP supports critical and collaborative engagement in social work. The research indicates, students initially develop social and political analysis, make relevant links between theory and practice (praxis) and foster skills in democratic leadership and social action.

Abstract:
<p> Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an integral component of many companies especially technology companies. A huge percentage of technology companies want to engage their employees through corporate social responsibility as well; leading to the evolution of a new kind term- &ldquo;Employee Community Engagement&rdquo;. With 80% job seekers preferring to work for companies that are socially responsible and employee engagement reducing the staff turnover, CSR and employee engagement has become something not just preferable, but a need of the hour to affect the bottom line of companies.</p><p> The current method of doing CSR and employee engagement for companies is to manage the process manually, using spreadsheets, emails and calls. This process is extremely time consuming, allows companies no analytics and insights into their engagement process. My main contributions include interviewing five companies to find the problems, building a technical solution and implement it with users and finally recording the results and trends.</p><p> To create a technology solution for this problem, I interviewed the head of community and government relations for five different companies ranging for 50 to 10,000 employees &amp; analyzed their requirements based on their answers. The top problems were analyzed to be too much work as overhead, no tracking of employee data, lack of employee engagement, less employee turn out and skill and cause matching.</p><p> I built an MVP in core PHP was build to solve these problems first for company heads, nonprofits as well as employee volunteers before moving on to solve for other issues to see if using a technology platform may help solve the problem. A smooth user registration and onboarding was created for each of the user types so that everyone in a company can be engaged easily on the platform, a twitter like networking community was created so that users can interact about their philanthropy, administrators were given traceability regarding the engagement levels of their employees, an opportunity to create events and send out invitations through the portal was allowed, the creation of specific events was allowed for a nonprofit and an opportunity for closed team events for employees was allowed after the creation of the proposal by a nonprofit.</p><p> Implementing this saw an increase in engagement of employees from 4% to an average of 25% with a shift in the usage of CSR for team and culture building by the company as well. With increase in usage, requirements for grant management and workplace donations surfaced as well which would be a future leap for the product to become an end to end corporate social responsibility solution.</p>

Abstract:
The labour law includes the legal regulation between employees and employers. However, new forms of work have been developed the last decade, as perform work through a digital platform. Considerable of modern working life with new forms of labour organisations, do not fit in the labour law. Platform work is based in temporary assignments instead of determined working hours. This results in a flexible work form, but with less stability and regularity. This can engender a lack of rights and social security and an increased uncertainty regarding their work situation.   The purpose of this study is to illustrate the phenomenon platform work from a labour law perspective. To fulfil this purpose and answer the research questions it has been relevant to investigate legal material to interpret, systemise and determine applicable law. The study has placed great emphasises on practice and doctrine.   The result of this study shows that it is complex to applicate the labour law on platform workers and it is difficult to determine if they should be identified as workers in a legal sense. Platform work still brings several questions about how such a labour organisation stands in the labour market. In some respects the relation between the platform and the platform workers is equivalent to the relation between an employer and an employee, and in some respect’s relationships differ. More legal sources on the subject may be required to understand the relationship between platform work and the employer and employee concept.

Bosman, Dirk Johannes. "The perceived credibility of electronic word-of-mouth communicaton on e-commerce platforms." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/71818.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Enterprises and more specifically, marketing departments, function in a complex global market, while trying to deliver products and services to satisfy the needs of consumers. It is estimated that by 2013, enterprises will be spending $4.75 trillion and consumers $330 billion by means of commercial transactions over the Internet, and that by 2050 most transactions – if not all transactions – will be e-commerce based (Laudon and Traver, 2010:1-7). The 24-hour access to a global network of markets has brought about two major challenges for most enterprises. Firstly, the Internet as a publishing platform has exponentially increased the creation and sharing of information, which has significantly increased consumers’ search cost; and secondly, as more electronic word-of-mouth (EWOM) is being generated online, a significant amount of power and influence over enterprises has shifted to consumers (Chen, Wu and Yoon, 2004:716-722; Tapscott and Williams, 2008:52-53). Ultimately, enterprises are challenged to harness the power of EWOM for more successful e-commerce strategies and increased market share. Given previous studies, it was possible to extend the theoretical framework of EWOM communication in the fields of Internet marketing and online consumer behaviour. The purpose of this study was to create two models that could measure, over time, the impact of EWOM review communication on an e-commerce platform, specifically with regard to review credibility and sales levels. In using a non-probability judgement sampling procedure, it emerged that EWOM reviews do indeed influence the sales levels of e-commerce platform Amazon.com, and that certain review factors (platform, text length, time and star ratings) significantly influenced the credibility of Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com reviews. Furthermore, it was concluded that the overall credibility of reviews increases over time as more and more online users have the ability to scrutinise it. When Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com’s reviews were compared to each other, the results indicated that Amazon.com had more reviews than Barnesandnoble.com, and that the reviews posted at Amazon.com had on average longer text lengths and were found to be more helpful than the reviews at Barnesandnoble.com. The study's major contribution is that it provides wide-ranging guidelines for usability and user experience design, sales and inventory forecasting, as well as benchmark statistics for marketing campaigns.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Ondernemings, en in die besonder bemarkingsafdelings, funksioneer in ‘n komplekse globale mark, in hulle strewe om voortdurend produkte en dienste te lewer wat voldoen aan verbruikersbehoeftes.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Electronic nicotine products (ENPs) such as e-cigarettes have emerged as the most commonly used tobacco products among middle and high school students in the United States (U.S.). In 2019, almost 1 in 10 and 1 in 4 middle and high school students used e-cigarettes, respectively. Although familial relations and access to ENPs continue to play a major role in the uptake of e-cigarettes among adolescents, little is known about the role of social media in this phenomenon. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the role of social media in the uptake of e-cigarettes among students in Appalachian Tennessee. Methods: In March 2019, data involving high school students in an Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)-designated distressed county in Appalachian Tennessee were collected (N=399). We ascertained the study’s outcomes (current e-cigarette use), the exposure (use of social media and the type of social media used to discuss e-cigarette) and covariates using validated questions. Descriptive statistics, bi-variate and multi-variable analyses were performed. The Odds Ratios (ORs), confidence intervals (CI), and the significance level (p ≤ 0.05) have been reported. Results: About 15.5% of the population were current e-cigarette users, with 9.8% of them ever discussed electronic cigarettes/JUUL on social media, more commonly with snap-chat (8.33%) and Instagram (4.31%). Use of social media (OR = 0.56, CI = 0.37 - 0.83, p = 0.0042) and type of social media used (OR = 0.80, CI = 0.65 - 0.99, p =0.0375) were significantly associated with decreased number of days of e-cigarette use in the last 30 days, after controlling for the covariates. Conclusion: The use of social media was associated with current e-cigarettes users. As such, there is need for more in-depth examination of social media contents as it relates to ENPs, to understand the mechanism of reduced ENP use among school-going youths in rural Appalachia.

Full text
Abstract:
Athletes in sports such as the gymnastics who perform the still rings cross position are disadvantaged due to a lack of objective and convenient measurement methods. The gymnastics “cross ”is a held isometric strength position considered fundamental to all still rings athletes. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if two small force platforms (FPs) placed on supports to simulate a cross position could demonstrate the fidelity necessary to differentiate between athletes who could perform a cross from those who could not. Ten gymnasts (5 USA Gymnastics, Senior National Team, and 5 Age Group Level Gymnasts) agreed to participate. The five Senior National Team athletes were grouped as cross Performers; the Age Group Gymnasts could not successfully perform the cross position and were grouped as cross Non- Performers. The two small FPs were first tested for reliability and validity and were then used to obtain a force-time record of a simulated cross position. The simulated cross test consisted of standing between two small force platforms placed on top of large solid gymnastics spotting blocks. The gymnasts attempted to perform a cross position by placing their hands at the center of the FPs and pressing downward with sufficient force that they could remove the support of their feet from the floor. Force-time curves (100 Hz) were obtained and analyzed for the sum of peak and mean arm ground reaction forces. The summed arm forces, mean and peak, were compared to body weight to determine how close the gymnasts came to achieving forces equal to body weight and thus the ability to perform the cross. The mean and peak summed arm forces were able to statistically differentiate between athletes who could perform the cross from those who could not (p < 0.05). The force-time curves and small FPs showed sufficient fidelity to differentiate between Performer and Non- Performer groups. This experiment showed that small and inexpensive force platforms may serve as useful adjuncts to athlete performance measurement such as the gymnastics still rings cross.

"Phase Characteristics of the Countermovement Jump Force-Time Curve: A Comparison of Athletes by Jumping Ability." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2018. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/4664.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to compare the phase characteristics of the countermovement jump (CMJ) force-time (F-t) curve between athletes based on jumping ability. An initial sample of one-hundred fifty Division-I collegiate athletes were ranked based on CMJ height. Three performance groups were then formed by taking the top, middle, and lower 30 athletes (15 men and 15 women) from the sample. Phases of the CMJ F-t curve were determined and then characterized by their duration, magnitude, area (impulse), and shape (shape factor). A series of 3-way mixed analysis of variance were used to determine statistical differences in phase characteristics between performance groups as well as between male and female athletes. Statistically significant phase-by-performance group interactions were observed for relative phase magnitude (p < 0.001), relative phase impulse (p < 0.001), and shape factor (p = 0.002). Phase-by-sex interactions were statistically significant for both relative phase magnitude (p < 0.001) and relative phase impulse (p < 0.001). Post hoc comparisons indicated that higher jumpers exhibited larger relative magnitude and impulse in the phases contained within the positive area of the F-t curve. Similarly, relative phase magnitude and impulse were the only phase characteristics to be statically different between men and women. Finally, the relative shape of the phase representing the initial rise in force was found to relate to jump height. These results provide some information regarding the diagnostic value of qualitative analysis of the CMJ F-t curve.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to compare ground contact time between an optical measurement system and a force platform. Participants in this study included six collegiate level athletes who performed drop jumps and sprint strike steps for a total of 15 repetitions each. Ground contact data was simultaneously collected from an optical measurement system and a force platform, at a sampling frequency of 1000 Hz. Data was then analyzed with Pearson’s correlation and paired sample t-tests. The measures from the optical measurement system were found to be significantly higher (p < 0.001) than measures from the force platform in both conditions. Although significantly different, the extremely large relationships (0.979, 0.993) found between the two devices suggest the optical sensor is able to detect similar changes in performance to that of a force platform. Practitioners may continue to utilize optical sensors to monitor performance as it may provide a superior user-friendly alternative to more traditional based monitoring procedures, but must comprehend the inherent limitations due to the design of the optical sensors.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this analysis was to construct a preliminary scale of reference values for reactive strength index-modified (RSImod). Countermovement jump data from 151 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I collegiate athletes (male n = 76; female n = 75) were analyzed. Using percentiles, scales for both male and female samples were constructed. For further analysis, athletes were separated into four performance groups based on RSImod and comparisons of jump height (JH), and time to takeoff (TTT) were performed. RSImod values ranged from 0.208 to 0.704 and 0.135 to 0.553 in males and females, respectively. Males had greater RSImod (p < 0.001, d = 1.15) and JH (p < 0.001, d = 1.41) as compared to females. No statistically significant difference was observed for TTT between males and females (p = 0.909, d = 0.02). Only JH was found to be statistically different between all performance groups. For TTT no statistical differences were observed when comparing the top two and middle two groups for males and top two, bottom two, and middle two groups for females. Similarities in TTT between sexes and across performance groups suggests JH is a primary factor contributing to differences in RSImod. The results of this analysis provide practitioners with additional insight as well as a scale of reference values for evaluating RSImod scores in collegiate athletes.

Full text
Abstract:
A design department in the company Sandvik AB in Kista, Stockholm, has built a web-based platform for knowledge sharing that allows the employees to share knowledge, regardless of their role and position in the hierarchical structure of the organization. The web-based platform gathers disseminated information and provides a way of finding needed information in an easy way and thus enables increasing productivity and efficiency of the employees. The purpose of the research was to find out what the potential users find encouraging and motivating in order to use a web-based platform for knowledge sharing and a functionality for performance measurement. Compared to what technically is possible today, there is lack of transparency in the company. The knowledge that exists within the company is dispersed and difficult to access for the employees in the organization. By gathering the knowledge and information and enabling the employees to share knowledge, they could potentially increase their performance of work assignments. The problem that this report addresses is that currently there are not good enough ways of measuring and keeping track of the performance of work assignments or routines in some departments in the company. The qualitative method of semi-structured interviews has been used for gathering data in this research. The data have been analyzed with the method of content analysis. The result of the research is that there are several aspects that need to be considered when encouraging and motivating users to share knowledge in a web-based platform for knowledge sharing and to use it as a tool for performance measurement. The main aspects identified in this research are corporate culture, choice of performance measures, managers’ responsibility, visibility and usage of the performance data and availability of the web-based platform. These aspects concern the attitude of the company and how to encourage and motivate the users to want to use the web-based platform.

Abstract:
The Internet facilitates access to online product reviews and comments written by consumers. These reviews and comments are available to a large number of other customers and consequently, it can be predicted that these have a considerable impact on the success of goods and services. Therefore it is essential for businesses to understand the rationale of these online articulations. This thesis describes an elaborate research project, conducted to investigate and to derive motives and antecedents of the reading behaviour of consumer reviews in online opinion platforms. The thesis was carried out in two sequential phases of qualitative and quantitative methods. The first phase (N==25) employed asynchronous online interview method, synchronous online interview method and participant validity checks, all of which explored and investigated the motives. Results from the first phase showed four different types of motives that drive customers to read online reviews: Decision-illvolvement, Product-involvement, Social-involvement and Economic-involvement motives. The outcomes also demonstrated four different new types of motives: Self-involvement motives, Consumer empowerment motives, New social-involvement motives and Site-administration motives. Several related themes were also investigated, such as the preference for reading or writing and the reasons for choosing one over the other. The second phase (N==lOlO) tested the relevance of the online reading motives and their influence on consumer buying and communication behaviour in a large-scale quantitative questionnaire. The thesis concluded a necessity for opinion portal providers and commercial providers of consumer goods and services to understand the complex relationship that links motives of the online reading behaviour to the various consumer behavioural constructs. The main managerial implication is to develop strategies that allow organisations to benefit effectively from such online opinions. Further research ought to draw on a variety of research methods to create a clearer picture of online reading behaviour, in particular considering that this is an emerging area of research. Future studies could also investigate the antecedents of online writing behaviour to provide a better understanding of the full equation of eWOM.

Abstract:
The dynamics of use and adoption of information on various online review platforms remain elusive and complex, indicating the importance of more research on electronic word of mouth (eWOM) and online consumer reviews (OCRs). Existing theoretical models do not fully explicate the role of the influential factors and their interrelations in information adoption. This research offers a more holistic model of information adoption. The Information Adoption Model (IAM) and the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) are utilised as the theoretical foundations for the conceptual model while examining the factors that influence consumers' perceptions of and information adoption decisions from Independent and E-merchants' websites. Information usefulness is employed as a mediator. This research examines various COPs (consumer opinion platforms) by categorising consumers into four groups on the basis of their engagement behaviour and investigating their information adoption decisions. The research undertook quantitative methodology and conducted a survey on 635 respondents from Thailand. All hypotheses were developed and tested using data collected via an online questionnaire and were analysed with Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), with multigroup analysis techniques. Additionally, the research used two step cluster analysis and identified four groups of consumers on the basis of their engagement behaviour Quicker, Explorer, Confidant and Passionate. The findings are 1) A positively significant relationship between information usefulness and information adoption has been approved 2) Consumer adopt different information adoption criteria for different types of COPs 3) Consumers' assessment of different factors of OCRs varies due to the difference in the level of online engagement. The results offer useful implications for marketers by identifying and analysing the criteria that consumers adopt from specific platforms and underlining the effect of the level of consumer engagement on information adoption of OCRs.

Abstract:
Advances in digital technology have recently allowed for richer text annotation in combination with authentic second language video media. As a result, many educational researchers are focusing increased attention on the effect this application of technology can have on second language acquisition. This study examines the comparative effectiveness of target vocabulary treatments with either native language (L1) definitions or target language (L2) definitions when target vocabulary is presented in either kana or kanji as a part of the subtitles of an L2 film based on participant performance on vocabulary assessments. This study also examines the participants' perceived levels of helpfulness of the varying word treatments. The results of the study suggest that providing annotations for target words in the L2 increases learning of that word more than L1 annotations for intermediate learners of Japanese. On the other hand, learners rated access to definitions in L1 as more helpful than L2 definitions, and they expressed their preference for understanding the story more than learning the target vocabulary.

Abstract:
Through online social media, user-generated content (UGC) is posted and communicated. This type of content has a high influence on the consumer's buying behaviour, particularly in services due to its intangible nature which implies that quality cannot be determined before consumption. As restaurants are an economic activity in the services sector, managers and marketing professionals must adapt their communication strategies to benefit from the user-generated content. This study aims to study the role and influence of user-generated content in choosing a restaurant. Results from this study show that user-generated content has a positive effect on the perception of credibility, usefulness and suitability to risk. Results also show that the perceived usefulness predicts the consumer's attitude towards the UGC. Ultimately this attitude will prompt a positive effect on the selection of a restaurant. Results were obtained by statistically analysing with SPSS the answers to the questionnaires carried out on via the Qualtrics online platform. To conclude, user-generated content is an increasing trend in the context of the selection of a restaurant and as such managers and marketeers need to understand the role of UGC, in order to maximize its impact on social media. This will help to promote a more positive attitude on consumers, which, in turn, will encourage them to increase their selection of a restaurant.<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract:
The sector of restaurants in Portugal, due to the strong gastronomic culture, has a strong expression in the national market. Abstract:
In this thesis, three methods are presented to model the decision process of whether or not to bid for a tender in offshore petroleum platform fabrication. A sample data and the assessment based on this data are gathered from an offshore petroleum platform fabrication company and this information is analyzed to understand the significant parameters in the industry. The alternative methods, &ldquo<br>Regression Analysis&rdquo<br>, &ldquo<br>Neural Network Method&rdquo<br>and &ldquo<br>Fuzzy Neural Network Method&rdquo<br>, are used for modeling of the bidding decision process. The regression analysis examines the data statistically where the neural network method and fuzzy neural network method are based on artificial intelligence. The models are developed using the bidding data compiled from the offshore petroleum platform fabrication projects. In order to compare the prediction performance of these methods &ldquo<br>Cross Validation Method&rdquo<br>is utilized. The models developed in this study are compared with the bidding decision method used by the company. The results of the analyses show that regression analysis and neural network method manage to have a prediction performance of 80% and fuzzy neural network has a prediction performance of 77,5% whereas the method used by the company has a prediction performance of 47,5%. The results reveal that the suggested models achieve significant improvement over the existing method for making the correct bidding decision.

Abstract:
Context: It has been suggested that muscle fatigue can lead to injury, however, research investigating this phenomenon in functional ankle instability (FAI) subjects is lacking. Aim: The purpose of this thesis was to research postural sway and muscular latency in FAI subjects and healthy controls, both before and immediately after localised and globalised fatigue protocols. Subjects: All subjects used in this project were males, between the ages of 18 and 25 years, and participated in regular (&gt;2 x week) aerobic exercise. Subjects were categorised into healthy subjects, or subjects with a history of FAI using the FAI questionnaire. Methods: Neuromuscular control was analysed in FAI subjects and healthy controls through measures of muscular latency and postural sway. These measures were repeated both before and immediately after localised and globalised fatigue protocols. Results: The induction of localised and globalised fatigue had no effect on muscle latency in the FAI or healthy subjects. However, postural sway was significantly increased in the FAI subjects, following localised and globalised fatigue, with globalised fatigue also significantly increasing postural sway in the healthy subjects. The globalised football-specific fatigue protocol caused the greatest deficits in the FAI subjects, but also the healthy controls. Conclusions: In terms of muscle latency individuals that participate in sports, as well as sports clinicians and coaches, should not be concerned about the theorised relationship between the onset of fatigue and an increased injury risk at the ankle. However, in terms of postural sway the globalised football-specific fatigue protocol caused the greatest deficits. This highlights that the fatigued individual may be at greater risk of musculoskeletal injury during prolonged exercise that involves multiple joints, such as a football match.

Abstract:
The present project provides a survey of contemporary work relations in the context of the so-called gig economy (also known as the sharing, collaborative, platform, and on-demand economy). Against the background of recent concerns over automation replacing work at a large scale, the project argues instead that the displacement of work warrants more critical attention. The project examines how the gig economy presents their services as automating technologies while downplaying the ways that workers' employment, not to mention lives, are made increasingly precarious by these alleged improvements. Specifically, the project surveys three gig-economies, the ride-hailing service Uber, the home-sharing service Airbnb, and the online labor marketplace Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT). Methodologically, the project employs an interdisciplinary approach, integrating insights from political economy, critical theory, discourse analysis, and ethnographic research. A qualitative assessment of the respective work environments shifts a relatively apolitical discourse on the future of work not only toward a more pronounced critique of the gig economy, but also toward a renewed discussion on the kinds of jobs that earn the labels of freelance and entrepreneurship. Professionals and scholars concerned with the future of work stand to benefit from the findings of the research, particularly as it challenges some commonplace assumptions in the discourse of what has been termed postcapitalism.<br>Ph. Thajudeen, Shamnath. "Supporting the design phase of industrialised house building using a product platform approach : A case study of a timber based post and beam building system." Licentiate thesis, Jönköping University, JTH, Konstruktion och produktutveckling, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-48266.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, industrialised house building has gained shares on the Swedish house building market. The market demands for industrialised house building are exceeding the available supply of housing and experiencing a substantial increase in the housing production costs. For industrialised house building, the design has been identified as a critical phase with the systematization of the design a necessary part of industrialisation. Therefore, companies strive towards the inclusion of standardization and controlled processes in the design phase. Product platforms have proved to be related to the standardization of processes and products. Introducing a product platform approach in the design phase of house building could be a way to improve the design and ensure value creation in entire processes. Thus, the aim of this research is to outline means to support and improve the design phase of industrialised house building by using a product platform approach. A Swedish multi-storey house building company that uses glulam post and beam building system with a focus on platform development was used as the single case study in this research. The company intends to achieve increased efficiency by moving towards industrialized approaches. Empirical data were mainly gathered from interviews, observations, workshops, and document analysis. The findings present the existing challenges in the housing building industry and outlines twenty critical success factors that need to be considered in the design phase. Also, the result outlines support methods and tools that can be used for the improvement of the design phase when applying a product platform approach. Moreover, a flexible product platform can be developed with the support of parametric modelling and used to design building components having an engineer-to-order characteristic. Finally, the results show that a building system can be considered as part of a product platform in light of the necessity of an adequate support in the design process to maintain a sustainable platform. Thus, the contribution includes the addition of knowledge to platform theory in general and its application on the design phase of industrialised house building.<br>Under de senaste åren har det industriella husbyggandet tagit andelar på den svenska husbyggnadsmarknaden.

Abstract:
Network programming is one of the most important applications in Wireless Sensor Networks as It provides an efficient way to update program Images running on sensor nodes without physical access to them. Securing these updates, however, remains a challenging and important issue, given the open deployment environment of sensor nodes. Though several security schemes have been proposed to impose the authenticity and Integrity protection on network programming applications, they are either energy Inefficient as they tend to use digital signature or lacks the data confidentiality. In addition, due to the absence of secure memory management in the current sensor hardware, the attacker could inject malicious code into the program flash by exploiting buffer overflow In the memory despite the secure code dissemination. The contribution of this thesis Is to provide two software-based security protocols and one hardware-based remote attestation protocol for network programming application. Our first protocol deploys multiple one-way key chains for a multi-hop sensor network. The scheme Is shown to be lower In computational, power consumption and communication costs yet still able to secure multi??hop propagation of program images. Our second protocol utilizes an Iterative hash structure to the data packets in network programming application, ensuring the data confidentiality and authenticity. In addition, we Integrated confidentiality and DoS-attack-resistance in a multi??hop code dissemination protocol. Our final solution is a hardware-based remote attestation protocol for verification of running codes on sensor nodes. An additional piece of tamper-proof hardware, Trusted Platform Module (TPM), is imposed into the sensor nodes. It secures the sensitive information (e.g., the session key) from attackers and monitors any platform environment changes with the Internal registers. With these features of TPM, the code Injection attack could be detected and removed when the contaminated nodes are challenged in our remote attestation protocol. We implement the first two software-based protocols with Deluge as the reference network programming protocol in TinyOS, evaluate them with the extensive simulation using TOSSIM and validate the simulation results with experiments using Tmote. We implement the remote attestation protocol on Fleck, a sensor platform developed by CSIRO that Integrates an Atmel TPM chip.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to identify and describe how consumer perceptions regarding information quality, sender credibility and effect of eWOM-communication differ between Facebook and Prisjakt. Approach – Based on previous research an analytical model was designed. The parts in the model were the aspects of the problem which the present study aimed to examine. An experimental design was applied in which ten students at Örebro University were exposed to a scenario where they took part of eWOM-communication concerning a specific product on Facebook and Prisjakt and then had to answer questions in an interview. The analytical model formed the base of the interview guide used in the interview and the specific product was chosen with help from a focus group. Implication – The study illustrates that consumers may perceive the quality higher on Prisjakt while the sender credibility can be perceived higher on Facebook. Despite this conclusion the effect of eWOM-communication in this study is that the information on Facebook is adopted to a greater degree than the information on Prisjakt. The reason for this is that the sender credibility appeared to be more important in the process of information adoption.<br>Syfte – Syftet med denna studie är att identifiera och beskriva hur konsumenters uppfattning skiljer sig mellan Facebook och Prisjakt gällande informationens kvalitet, avsändarens trovärdighet och effekten av eWOM-kommunikation.

This is what is being discussed in the corridors of the BIM-world. But if this is the future: why is the implementation so slow, and what exactly is to be implemented?   The process of handling and understanding what BIM is has become too complex, and in this report we want to find solutions for making the way of working intelligible and useful for a wider audience. In collaboration with Vianova Systems, we have investigated what the use of BIM looks like today and what improvements are needed for a wider future implementation in the AEC industry.   Our investigations show that almost 80 % believe that work which utilizes a digital model would be more effective: at the same time the insecurity concerning software and uncertainties regarding the implementation of the work methodologies are limiting factors. As a solution for this a user interface for project management and communication has been developed.   These investigations have been carried out with the aid of a questionnaire and interviews and compiled into two parts: partly this report, as well as an end product of visionairy nature called ”7 visions for the future of BIM”.

Snape, Marine. Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris, EHESS, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023EHES0103.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis delves into the world of peer-to-peer service platforms, commonly known as "jobbing", with a specific focus on Jobbycat, a company that promotes independent work within the social and solidarity economy sector. Our research is built on the premise that to truly understand why individuals engage in platform-based activities, it's crucial to examine both individual journeys and the organizational context. Platform work is often perceived as a form of "odd jobs" or temporary employment, characterized by its unpredictability, short-term nature, and modest income. However, the jobbers we've had the opportunity to interact with convey a positive narrative about these activities, highlighting the flexibility, independence, and spirit of collaboration that they offer. To explore the role of these platforms in shaping work dynamics and the way participants perceive work, we've adopted a three-part, case-by-case approach. The first part of our thesis delves into the various interpretations of the term jobbing and outlines the methodology we've employed, emphasizing the unique aspects of our case and our approach to fieldwork. This section illustrates how the diversity of sectors and services associated with jobbing presents not only practical challenges for researchers but also fosters the use of intentionally vague and all-encompassing definitions of what constitutes jobbing. This flexibility allows participants to draw on a range of theoretical frameworks and attract a broader base of involvement. Diverse justifications offered by these platforms serve to expand the boundaries of work, effectively legitimizing sporadic and often overlooked tasks as legitimate sources of income. The second part of our study is grounded in observations made within the platform itself and spotlights the tangible work undertaken by Jobbycat's employees. It also delves into how the consent of participants is cultivated and structured within the organization. This section underscores the platform's knack for valuing task-specific work by integrating the status of "micro-entrepreneurs" into an integration process. This is achieved by promoting a brand of social and solidarity-based platform capitalism, which we analyze as a way to disguise market relationship under a "social and solidarity" fashion, that blend autonomy and control. Additionally, this section underscores how this platform fits into the broader trend of privatizing job placement and integration. The third part of our thesis relies on roughly forty biographical interviews conducted with jobbers. These interviews shed light on the participants' perceptions and experiences through the lens of three forms of jobbing: accumulation, disruption, and exclusion. It also underscores the professional expectations that arise from this activity while highlighting the gender and class disparities that persist. Our study reveals that engagement in jobbing is motivated by a yearning for daily independence, all while underscoring the crucial role of salaried employment in jobbers' life journeys. This role influences them to engage, persevere, or ultimately step away from the world of jobbing. Our ethnographic inquiry led us to meet individuals who wear multiple hats, plural workers for whom participating in platform activities adds to pre-existing income, jobs or employment status. To elucidate these diverse mechanisms, we propose broadening the concept of pluri-activity in favor of the concept of plural work.In conclusion, our work casts light on how platform participants, jobbers, and institutions embrace this model in an era of increasingly intricate individual journeys, the blending of multiple jobs, and the intertwining of various employment statuses, all within the grey areas of employment and work

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>資訊管理系<br>102<br>With the rapid development of information networks and mobile technology, "connection economy" has changed the operational relationship among enterprise, customers and the third-party vendors. "Network organization" formed by the relationship changes subvert human work patterns. From the job seeker’s perspective, this study investigates the application of the work platforms using the "new working relationship" between the organizations and people. Location-based Service opened the called car service of American Uber and China "Di Di Da Che". The passengers instantly link with the cab drivers through the mobile phones. Once a user requests UberRUSH, a courier will arrive either on bike or on foot to deliver a package elsewhere. American Kickstart, Taiwan FlyingV enable everyone to sell their plan and raise funds from the masses, and then manufacture a product or execute project plan. Quirky let the public participate in the new product idea or post conception. If the conception got approval by the platform committee, the benefits will be distributed among the initiator, participants and platform. With the help of 99designs, employer post a design request like holding a competition, then pick his favorite from numerous design works. Sweden Crowding allows enterprises to issue a challenge to the public to seek solutions to various problems. Japan "Creek &; River" connects the creative professionals and production companies. Via LinkedIn, users can create a professional network of contacts, join the professional communities, identify talent, and find jobs or business transaction opportunities. In the "connection economy" generations, the platform develops mutually beneficial ecosystem and create new value chain by linking people, companies, a number of groups and resources. Many occupations have new "working style" such as cab drivers, writers, designers, entrepreneurs and so on. There are many aspects of these new changes, this study focus are as follows. When a person graduates, unemployed or want to change job, he needs to think about the following questions: 1. What are the factors and process flow of a career choice? What tools are available to use? 2. How to classify those existing work platforms? What are their business models? How to use them? 3. How will the work platform evolve with PEST trends, enterprise development and the needs of the new generation people? The study results as follows. 1. According to career choice theory, collate and analyze the processes and factors that influence career choice. 2. By entrepreneurs, self-employed, principal, atypical four kinds of practitioners of identity, coupled with “other comprehensive” of five to classify and enumerate the working platforms, then select multiple model cases to illustrate their business models, and summarizes their evolution. 3. With competition and social development, the two-way evolvement between “enterprise networking” and “network enterprising” will form a “networking teams”. The enterprise or organization becomes a dynamic link to a gathering of network nodes. This research expects that the job seekers could efficiently utilize the work platforms and two summarized career choice diagrams- the factors and the process flow. And I suggest that more in-depth follow-up studies can develop work platforms and create "personal values".
