Kuluk, Balazs. "Application of carbon dioxide in reaction work-up and purification procedures." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6522/.

Full text
Abstract:
The production of fine chemicals, including active pharmaceutical ingredients, can lead to large amounts of waste, including by-products and contaminated solvents. In many cases, it is actually the work-up of the reaction and purification, rather than the reaction itself, which is responsible. CO2-based procedures have been developed, which can potentially alleviate some of these problems. They can be summarised as follows: I. The distribution of certain organic bases/acids between organic and aqueous phases could be tuned by exposing the two phases to CO2, exploiting a pH change due the acidic character of CO2. The induced change could be reversible by physical decarboxylation. Numerous amines and other organic bases were tested for CO2 aided aqueous extraction. Connection between their pKa and logP was found, and an empiric formula was proposed to predict the possibility of extraction. Concentration dependence of the CO2 aided aqueous extraction and rate of the chemical free neutralisation were also investigated for benzyl amines and drug molecules with amine functions. II. CO2 can enhance the ability to precipitate of certain amines, exploiting a carbamate formation reaction. This would dramatically reduce the amount of acid and base required for preparation of amine salt derivatives and neutralisation. Tendencies of several secondary amines for CO2 adduct formation were tested, and detailed analysis of these often labile compounds was discussed. Possibility of carbamate formation based separation was demonstrated. III. CO2 could be used to induce precipitation of polar compounds from their solution at elevated pressures when utilised as an antisolvent, exploiting its nonpolar character and its solubility in organic solvents. Numerous solute-solvent systems were exposed to pressurised CO2, either above or under its critical temperature. High pressures can often be a limitations for industrial procedures. Operation at lower temperatures allowed the application of lower pressures, because of the decreased vapour pressure of liquid CO2. Possibility to separate solute mixtures was also demonstrated.

Zhou, Hongxing. "Work methods and procedures for plague surveillance and control in South Africa." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/649.

Full text
Abstract:
Plague is a classic zoonosis caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and is subject to the International Health Regulations, 1969. In the last two millennia, plague has become widespread, with three pandemics occurring in the 6th, 14th and 20th centuries. Currently, plague outbreaks and epidemics still occur worldwide. This study attempts to develop formal work methods and procedures for plague surveillance and control by environmental health practitioners as a strategy to ensure that field data can be integrated within the municipal, provincial and national spheres of government. A qualitative, explorative, descriptive, inductive and deductive research design was followed. A documentary research approach was employed as the primary method of data collection. To obtain additional information, both semi-structured personal interviews and physical observations during plague surveillance were adopted by the researcher. The organisational structure of the health care system in South Africa was analysed to identify and explain the role and functions of relevant decision-makers related to the surveillance and control of plague within the different spheres of government. Legislative measures regarding plague surveillance and control were also presented. As a prerequisite for the development of work methods and procedures for plague surveillance and control, the epidemiology of plague was discussed with emphasis on the distribution and characteristics of the disease in South Africa. Important rodent reservoirs and flea vectors of plague in South Africa were identified. Clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of plague were described and discussed. Within this qualitative study an attempt has been made to develop work methods (xiii) and procedures for plague surveillance and control in South Africa. Relevant field data forms to be used during plague surveillance and control strategies were also developed. Recommendations emanating from the study can be found in the final chapter.

Lee, Heejin. "Temporal implications of electronically mediated business procedures on organisational work : EDI applications in trade." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1997. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1475/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis begins with the sociological proposition that time is socially constructed. As such, time interacts with, and is affected by anything that makes up the social world. Information technologies have become an essential element of contemporary organisations. This is a study of how information technology affects the temporality of work in organisations. To address the question, we conducted case studies in organisations where temporal impacts of KTNET, an EDI application, were investigated and their sociological and organisational implications were analysed. Six dimensions of temporal order (duration, sequence, temporal location, deadline, cycle and rhythm) were employed to describe temporal changes in the work under study. Five major findings emerged from the case studies. - KTNET increased the flexibility in some export administrative work. - The distinction between internal and external flexibilities was more difficult to discern than expected. - KTNET increased the polychronicity of some workers in organising their work time, which contradicts the result of a previous study; close scrutiny of the two results leads to the theory of a temporal symmetry in which information technologies provide a temporal symmetry either between temporal behaviour of events/tasks and temporal behaviour of workers, or between different work groups' temporal behaviour. - KTNET tended to affect social relations between individuals or functional departments. - Finally, new temporal adjustments, especially of temporal location, were made between transacting organisations. The study increases knowledge in information systems research by raising a fresh issue of how computers affect temporality in organisational work and initiating a study on cultural impacts of information systems which could be applied in practice. It also makes contributions to management and organisation studies on temporality by devising a new classificatory scheme of studies on time and building a theory of temporal symmetry.

Coe, Richard Alexander. "Team work and conflict during elective procedures in English National Health Service operating theatres." Thesis, City, University of London, 2009. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/17668/.

Full text
Abstract:
Multidisciplinary team working has been proposed as the means by which effective service delivery and organisation can be achieved within the operating theatre. Enhanced interprofessional communication, focus on a common goal, and valuing the contributions of team members have all been identified, within the professional literature, as elements of team working through which this objective could be realised. However, equal recognition has been given to reports of conflict and aggression experienced between professional groups within operating theatres. This thesis sets out to explore the relationship between these two phenomena in the context of the operating theatre, and explains the findings in an explanatory model of operating theatre work. The research was undertaken as a two part mixed method study. The first phase consisted of a survey of 391 operating department personnel, including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and operating department practitioners, employed in National Health Service operating departments in England. The survey gathered perceptions of conflict within and between staff groups, to identify the main sources of conflict, and the main protagonists. The results of the survey demonstrated the existence of the conflict related to changes in order of the operating list, and overrunning of the allotted operating time. The main professional groups involved were senior surgeons, and the nurses and operating department practitioners. Little variation was seen within the national sample. The second phase of the study consisted of ethnography within operating departments on two sites, supported by informal interviews with nurses, operating department practitioners, surgeons and anaesthetists. Field notes and interview data were analysed using Adaptive Theory through which new data and existing theory were utilised in an inductive process of theory generation. The findings reveal that working practices in the operating theatres did not conform fully to any existing model of team working. This thesis proposes that the persistent emphasis on multidisciplinary team working in the policy literature derives from a functionalist analysis of conflict. At a theoretical level the persistence of conflict can be explained via an analysis of the theoretical limitations of the functionalist model. Overcoming conflict requires a critique of functionalist solutions proposed in the literature and the application of alternative theoretical perspectives more attuned to addressing the underlying tensions inherent in the organisation of theatre work.

Liebowitz, Lorraine Elizabeth. "The patient speaks : a retrospective analysis of the in-vitro fertilization procedures in a provincial hospital." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17463.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 140-149.<br>This exploratory study tracks the experience of nine infertile couples on the In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET) programme at a provincial hospital. Various theoretical perspectives are explored vis a vis the role of women in society in relation to their infertility status. Quantitative data was obtained from questionnaires completed; and qualitative data was obtained through the use of in-depth interviews. The study supports the notion that infertility has both a medical and a psychological component, the latter being unaddressed by the infertility team. Infertility is a couple issue and needs to be addressed as such. The study provides guidelines for future service delivery and therapeutic interventive strategies, and concludes that for effective service delivery, a holistic interventive approach with the inclusion of a clinical social worker is imperative.

Bigara, Ana Doherty. "Environmental health work methods and procedures for the surveillance and control of cholera in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1016073.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to develop a standardised set of Environmental-Health work methods and procedures, with the purpose of contributing to the effective surveillance and control of Cholera in the KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa. The researcher followed a qualitative research design, which was explorative, descriptive, inductive and deductive by nature. The methods of data collection were documentary research and focus-group interviews. A documentary research approach was employed as the primary method of data collection for the study. The researcher has used semi-structured questions to obtain relevant information from the participants in the focus groups. The purpose of using semi-structured questions in the focus groups was to draw on their knowledge and experience of communicable disease surveillance and control in relation to Cholera, as well as to ascertain their views on the role of the Environmental-Health Practitioners in the Communicable - Disease Outbreak- Response Teams at the three different spheres of government. The process of qualitative data analysis was followed. This was based on data reduction and interpretation; and it was conducted as an activity simultaneously with data collection, data interpretation (coding) and narrative writing. The information obtained from the analysed data assisted in the development of the environmentalhealth work methods and procedures for the surveillance and control of Cholera in the KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa. In this study, firstly, the epidemiology of Cholera was described and analysed against the background of its manifestation in South Africa. Secondly, the national health care system, with specific reference to the place and role of environmental health practitioners at national, provincial and municipal spheres – in relation to Cholera surveillance and control – was analysed. Thirdly, the relevant research that has been done globally has been analysed against the background of the findings of the above, together with work methods and procedures to be used by environmental-health practitioners during the surveillance and control of Cholera in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. These include, inter alia: Work methods and procedures for Cholera case investigation; Work methods and procedures for sanitary investigations; and Work methods and procedures for identifying the sources of contamination in environmental waters. Finally, the conclusion and limitations was presented, and appropriate recommendations were made. These include: he need to educate all role - players, on the recent developments in the identification of Vibrio cholerae from environmental surface waters; Communication systems should be developed that allow the Director: Environmental Health to communicate urgent environmental health information directly to the Minister of Health; he training of environmental-health practitioners on detailed work methods and procedures for the surveillance and control of Cholera; and the existing national Cholera control guidelines need to be updated to include relevant environmental health situations when emergencies arise.

Abstract:
Occupational risk management can be a catalyst in generating superior returns for all stakeholders on a sustainable basis. A number of companies in South Africa have implemented Cardinal Rules of Safety adopted from international companies to ensure the safety of their employees. The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of the cardinal rules on employee safety behaviour implemented at power stations in Mpumalanga. The empirical study was done by using a questionnaire as measuring instrument. The questionnaire was developed from a literature review and contains questions and items relevant to the initial research problem. The questionnaire comprised of five–point Likert scale type questions. The convenience sampling method was applied identifying 90 participants at three different power stations in Mpumalanga taking part in the study. Statistical analysis was performed by the Statistical Consulting Service of the North–West University using SPSS. Cronbach’s alpha co–efficients was used to determine the reliability of the factors. Descriptive statistics (Mean, standard, deviation, were used in the compiling of the profile of the results. While Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient was calculated to identify practically significant associations between variables and factors The research findings suggest that there is practical significant correlation between the factors that were measured. The opinion given by respondents suggests that cardinal rules of safety were implemented, given all the necessary support by management and enforced throughout the organisation.<br>Thesis (MBA)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Abstract:
The demands on companies with industrial product development have become higher these days regarding the time-to-market, customer needs, and environmental requirements. Multinational companies have subsidiaries all over the world, which makes the efficiency in the communication between headquarters and subsidiaries substantial. It is also considered vital to have an efficient product development process and a good interaction between the people involved in the process. This thesis work has been executed at Atlas Copco Compressor Technique. The major part of the study was performed at the foreign subsidiary in Pune, India, although the study was initiated with a short visit at the head office in Antwerp, Belgium. The purpose of the study was to investigate and evaluate the product development process at one of the divisions in Pune and with that as a base, give suggestions for improvements. In addition, it was the purpose to investigate how the cross-functional and cross-national interaction could be enhanced. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 30 persons in total, and the results of the study were related to relevant theories within the area. The major finding was that the subsidiary in Pune follows the main phases of the company’s general product development process to a certain extent. However, there is no documentation of the activities and responsible persons involved in the shared work procedures. Furthermore, there are many issues in serial production. Regarding the project work and interaction, there are some complications considering the project facilities and the exchange of information. A number of suggestions for improvements have been concluded and most important is the need for a well-visualised and shared product development process at the studied division in Pune. Other recommendations regard the interaction between the functions and the exchange of knowledge between the divisions in Pune. In addition, some suggestions for how to enhance the cross-national communication have been presented.

Elie, Sammy Abraham. "Environmental health work methods and procedures for the surveillance and control of avian influenza in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/947.

Full text
Abstract:
Avian influenza is an infectious disease of birds caused by the Type A strain of the influenza virus. The disease, which was first identified in Italy more than 100 years ago, occurs worldwide (World Health Organization, 2006a). The current outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1), which began in Southeast Asia in mid-2003, is the largest and most severe on record. Never before in the recorded history of this disease have so many countries been simultaneously affected. Since the last pandemic in 1968-1969, the risk of an influenza pandemic has not been considered greater than at the present time. The importance of intervention strategies had become increasingly evident throughout the world. The World Health Organization provides a generic outline for preparedness plans to assist countries in their preparations to respond to a possible avian influenza pandemic. These guidelines may be modified as the epidemiology of avian influenza evolves. The South African National Department of Health has developed national guidelines in the form of an avian influenza preparedness plan. These draft guidelines do not provide detailed Environmental Health work methods and - procedures for the effective surveillance and control of the disease. The general purpose of this study is to develop a standardised set of Environmental Health work methods and - procedures, which will contribute to the effective surveillance and control of avian influenza in the Eastern Cape province – South Africa. Within the context of the purpose of this study, a qualitative, explorative, descriptive, inductive and deductive research design will be used. The methods of data collection will be documentary research, telephonic as well as in-depth personal interviews. In this study, documentary research will be the primary method of data collection. With a qualitative approach, the researcher will be the human instrument for data analysis. The process of qualitative data analysis will be based on data reduction and interpretation; and will be conducted as an activity simultaneously with data collection, data interpretation and narrative reporting writing.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This study identified the practices and procedures of instruction that is being implemented by group counseling instructors at CACREP-accredited institutions. A survey questionnaire developed by the researcher was used to gather data from 160 CACREP-accredited counseling units across the United States. The survey was designed to collect input from group instructors on how the didactic, practicum, and experiential components of the master's level group course are being implemented. Three assumptions were made in conducting this study: 1.) The majority of master's level group instructors will report that they use a didactic component in preparing students to become effective group leaders, 2.) The majority of master's level group instructors will report that they use an experiential component in preparing students to become effective group leaders, and 3.) The majority of master's level group instructors will report that they use a practicum component in preparing students to become effective group leaders. The survey questionnaire and, consequently, the results were divided into the respective sections of didactic, experiential, and practicum. The results indicated that each of these components were utilized in the instruction of master's level group courses.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate how our selected municipalityaddressed theirpreventive work regarding threat and violence among social workers, what strategies social workers have to overcome intimidating situations, and also what level of education social workers have. Previous research shows that education for social workers inthis topicoften is neglected. The study was conducted by one focus group interview with social workersall working inchild and familywelfarein our selected municipality. The main result of the study is that social workers experience that the municipalitysinternal agenda against threat and violence works well and gives support in their work. Despite this, the social workers expressed a desire to get morerelevant education about threats and violence to be able toavoid risk-taking behavior and be able to perform a more secure job. According to the social workers some of the strategies that affected the safety in their profession was the possibilityto have a direct and clear communication with the client to try and make the meeting between client and social workers more relaxed.<br>Syftet med denna kvalitativa studie var att undersöka hur den utvalda kommunen hanterade det förebyggande arbetet angående hot och våld bland socialarbetare, vilka strategier socialarbetare har för att bemästra hotfulla situationer, samt vilken utbildningsnivå socialarbetare har.

Abstract:
Well replicated tree-ring samples were collected, dated and measured for California west of the Sierra Nevada, eastern Oregon and the northern Great Basin. A computer program was developed and used to check crossdating quality. Another computer program to generate and analyze tree-ring chronologies was evaluated, further developed cooperatively and used to produce chronologies for the dated site collections. This report contains these site chronologies in three versions along with site descriptions and chronology statistics. Users manuals are included for the two computer programs. The effect on a chronology of poor crossdating is discussed, and a study of standardization of tree-ring measurement series is reported. Some new techniques are described for processing tree-ring samples.

The internship report, developed in real context, aims to present the work for 6 months, at the company Jorge Silva, Neto, Ribeiro & Pinho, SROC, Lda and, in particular, examine the practical application of analytical procedures in ABD, SA. The use of these procedures will be approached at several stages of the audit, focusing especially on the level of use in order to assess on their usefulness in the work of the auditor. The purpose was to analyze what has been done in a particular case and, given the relative efficiency and effectiveness of the procedures applied and the scarcity of resources that the auditor is faced many times, compare to what should be done, in order to identify the benefits/limitations arising from its application or of his abandonment, respectively. It was possible to respond through a qualitative methodology to a number of research questions that allowed us to know, understand and interpret the application of these audit procedures. After these months of work, it was concluded that the application of analytical procedures in ABD, SA didn't add speed in error and fraud detection or contributed to time improvement in the development of audit's work, for having been privileged a substantive approach for throughout the work.

The purpose of this study was to find out about the handling of chemicals on board a Swedish passenger ferry. The research questions were focused on choice of products and methods, communication and application of routines and instructions and risk awareness among the crew members. The study was carried out as a single-case study and consisted of analysis of documents, observations and interviews with crew members. The results show that the informants on the deck and engine departments had ample opportunity to influence the working situation in regards to handling of chemicals. The informant from the service department had limited ability to influence. All informants had a good knowledge about material safety data sheets and a high awareness about risks with chemicals. The personal protective equipment was highly prioritized and regarded as a vital part to minimize the risks with chemical handling. The conclusion drawn was that the practical work with chemicals on board functioned satisfactorily, but the documentation could be improved in terms of clearer instructions and more detailed information.

Abstract:
A superação dessas reduções será viável quando os processos de trabalho forem instaurados a partir do reconhecimento das necessidades de saúde desses grupos, tomando-as pela ótica da saúde coletiva, ou seja, respeitando a concepção da determinação do processo saúde-doença e a conquista política do direito à saúde.<br>The aim of this study has to do with the health needs of UBS Vila Dalva embracing area residents, of the Butantã Health School District, in São Paulo County. It has taken as reference the way how these needs are incorporated to this unit´s work procedures. The general goal was to investigate the health needs recognized as object of work in health. In order to do that it has identified and analyzed what the residents recognized as health needs and what they propose as answer to these needs. As to the UBS Vila Dalva workers it has identified and analyzed what they take as object of work in health. UBS Vila Dalva workers and residents of the unit´s embracing area constituted the research subjects. The semi-structured interview was used as technique to collect the dada and the thematic analyses as strategy to the reality apprehension. The analyses allowed to nominate empiric categories - State presence needs, social reproduction needs, political participation needs - which answered how the health needs are recognized by the residents of the area. The analyses showed that the residents attribute to the State the responsability for the variety of services garantee which promotes the social well-being and the responsability to interpose itself and to regulate the relations between capital and work in order to promote social reproduction ruled by the right to enjoy citinzenship. The analyses also showed that the units work procedures have been established in a previous manner to the area homogenous social group needs recognition, refraining from the damages and conducted by the attention to health focalization policy logic. The overcoming of these reductions will be practicable when the work procedures are established from the recognition of these groups health needs, under the colective health view, in other words, respecting the conception of the social determination of the health-illness process and the right to health political conquest.

Work proposals which discuss scholar questions along with teachers appear in a collaborative format, in which this professional would take an active role in the knowledge construction and there would be knowledge exchange among those involved. The Behavior Analysis provides conditions to the discussions about the process of teaching and learning including the description of principles and procedures which contributed for effective teaching, and, also, for descriptive function evaluation which can be understood as an educational resource that has been teaching the teachers, and, in which, an individual establishes functions relations between events from behavior identification to be analyzed and antecedent conditions and subsequent to this behavior. From a collaborative work format, the aims of this research were to describe teaching situations carried out by kindergarten teacher for teaching pre-arithmetic skills and also enable to the participant to describe functional relationships between what she wanted to teach, their teaching practices, and performance of their students as a result of its practices. In addition, to describe the present collaborative work, as well as, to create conditions for the teacher to describe principles and procedures for Behavior Analysis, which could contribute to effective teaching, were also aims of this study. The present work has conducted at the school where the teacher works. It was realized interviews to research teaching practices (in the context of teaching pre-arithmetic skills) for teaching pre-arithmetic skills; a discussion between researcher and participant on tasks present in an educational program of pre-arithmetical skills and teacher interaction with the mentioned program; recording and classroom observations; discussions for planning and analysis classes. It was described seven situations of teaching which will be used for the teaching pre-arithmetic skills from the data. However, only two teaching situations were also planned, executed and analyzed, which were related to the ordering skills of ensemble and notion of the pertinence of the objects to sets. The descriptive functional assessment seems to be a tool with potential to collaborative works with teachers. However, the procedure used did not allow that the participant functionally relates all the aspects discussed in the planning of the analyzed classes. The teacher showed indicative behaviors that appropriated elements brought by the researcher, in the other words, viii the participant used in some moments of the planning, execution and analysis of class principles and procedures described by Behavior Analysis focused on teaching (for example, she said that should have done the evaluation of the previous repertoire of students to realize a teaching situation). In addition, in these situations, the participant established some punctual dependence relations between theirs aims, teaching practices and performance measures for students on these practices. Because it was a collaborative work, the exchange knowledge between researcher and participant was something desired, and about this, the participant contributed describing practices for the pre-arithmetical skills teaching, as well as thinking of teaching opportunities for those who were not part of their routine. Participant speeches indicated that some elements of the collaborative work were not present throughout the interaction, such as the co-responsibility for the work. Changes in the present procedure were suggested to amend this characteristic of the interaction.<br>O trabalho do professor tem sido alvo de diversas pesquisas e intervenções, sendo que em alguns casos este profissional desenvolve um papel pouco ativo.

Abstract:
A design department in the company Sandvik AB in Kista, Stockholm, has built a web-based platform for knowledge sharing that allows the employees to share knowledge, regardless of their role and position in the hierarchical structure of the organization. The web-based platform gathers disseminated information and provides a way of finding needed information in an easy way and thus enables increasing productivity and efficiency of the employees. The purpose of the research was to find out what the potential users find encouraging and motivating in order to use a web-based platform for knowledge sharing and a functionality for performance measurement. Compared to what technically is possible today, there is lack of transparency in the company. The knowledge that exists within the company is dispersed and difficult to access for the employees in the organization. By gathering the knowledge and information and enabling the employees to share knowledge, they could potentially increase their performance of work assignments. The problem that this report addresses is that currently there are not good enough ways of measuring and keeping track of the performance of work assignments or routines in some departments in the company. The qualitative method of semi-structured interviews has been used for gathering data in this research. The data have been analyzed with the method of content analysis. The result of the research is that there are several aspects that need to be considered when encouraging and motivating users to share knowledge in a web-based platform for knowledge sharing and to use it as a tool for performance measurement. The main aspects identified in this research are corporate culture, choice of performance measures, managers’ responsibility, visibility and usage of the performance data and availability of the web-based platform. These aspects concern the attitude of the company and how to encourage and motivate the users to want to use the web-based platform.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study, which attempts to identify the ideas of science teachers about procedural understanding on a conceptual basis. The principle means of data collection was interviewing science teachers, in England and in Turkey, about their views of practical work in the dimension of procedural understanding. Some classroom observations involving practical work were also conducted to see teachers' actual practices. With the analysis of all data, it is hoped that findings would be utilised in informing a new science curriculum and a newly-designed teacher education programme in Turkey. The findings from English teachers suggest that their perceptions of procedural ideas are not as adequate as expected by the requirements of the National Curriculum. The results also present general views of Turkish teachers on practical work, which show that they have no knowledge of procedural understanding. Accordingly, the study concludes with some suggestions for more effective teaching.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis explored the relationship between work overload and procedural justice on job performance. It used planned comparisons to test three hypotheses, which were tested by having the participants (N=132) randomly assigned to groups and perform a proofreading task in two timed intervals. The study design used quantitative methodologies and the procedures and measures were piloted before data collection. A participant exit survey was also employed. Suggestions for future research and study are discussed. The proofreading samples, the exit survey questions and the Mini-Marker Personality Inventory, the informed consent form, and results tables are included.

Abstract:
Nyckelord: Ergonomer, arbetsmiljöingenjörer, byggprocessen, hälso- och sjukvårdslokaler, metoder, arbetssätt<br>Abstract Occupational injuries are a problem in healthcare in Sweden. Both occupational accidents and most of all occupational diseases caused by great physical workloads constitute a large proportion of work related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) of healthcare professionals. The aim of the study was to explore and describe the work process in the design teams of the building design process. The main focus was the building design process of health care buildings and the design teams where ergonomists and safety engineers are asked to participate. The purpose was to create a knowledge base consisting of this study and an appendix with methods and relevant literature. Eight people with different professions were interview. All of them had a good hold on the building design processes and on hospital architecture issues. Among them there were two ergonomists and two safety engineers. The result indicates that ergonomists and safety engineers were those who possessed the knowledge of working environment factors such as ergonomics in the building design processes. The methodology was to follow the agreed plan for the building design process established by the project Manager. Moreover the role of the ergonomists and safety engineers in the design team was to coach and supervise particularly the healthcare professionals. The main approach was to create a good dialogue and conversation and to keep a solution-oriented approach in the design team. Furthermore the most important method was to visualize drawings of Architects which made it possible for the healthcare workers to be able to audit the drawings correctly. This procedure gave the healthcare professionals a decision-making support which helped them to make well-reasoned decisions about their future work environment. The conclusion indicates that ergonomists and safety engineers are important because of their unique knowledge of working environment, especially ergonomics. Ergonomists and safety engineers need to be involved in the early phases of the building design process in order to be able to influence the design of new workspaces. The participation of these two professions in the design team may also benefit the healthcare workers with a future work environment which is largely designed according to their requirements and needs and will probably help to prevent MSDs. In the future there is a need for a specific education just for the ergonomists and the safety engineers participating in the building design process of healthcare buildings. There are great opportunities for them to develop their role towards a more prominent one in the building design process.
