Abstract:
Abstract Purpose Within the field of life cycle assessment (LCA), simplifications are a response to the practical restrictions in the context of a study. In the 1990s, simplifications were part of a debate on streamlining within LCA. Since then, many studies have been published on simplifying LCA but with little attention to systematise the approaches available. Also, despite being pervasive during the making of LCA studies, simplifications remain often invisible in the final results. This paper therefore reviews the literature on simplification in LCA in order to systematise the approaches found today. Methods A review of the LCA simplification literature was conducted. The systematic search and selection process led to a sample of 166 publications. During the review phase, the conceptual contributions to the simplification discourse were evaluated. A dataset of 163 entries was created, listing the conceptual contributions to the simplification debate. An empirically grounded analysis led to the generative development of a systematisation of simplifications according to their underlying simplifying logic. Results and discussion Five simplifying logics were identified: exclusion, inventory data substitution, qualitative expert judgment, standardisation and automation. Together, these simplifying logics inform 13 simplification strategies. The identified logics represent approaches to handle the complexities of product systems and expectations of the users of LCA results with the resources available to the analyst. Each simplification strategy is discussed with regard to its main applications and challenges. Conclusions This paper provides a first systematisation of the different simplification logics frequently applied in LCA since the original streamlining discussion. The presented terminology can help making communication about simplification more explicit and transparent, thus important for the credibility of LCA. Despite the pervasiveness of simplification in LCA, there is a relative lack of research on simplification per se, making further research describing simplification as a practice and analysing simplifications methodologically desirable.

Abstract:
Most recent sentence simplification systems use basic machine translation models to learn lexical and syntactic paraphrases from a manually simplified parallel corpus. These methods are limited by the quality and quantity of manually simplified corpora, which are expensive to build. In this paper, we conduct an in-depth adaptation of statistical machine translation to perform text simplification, taking advantage of large-scale paraphrases learned from bilingual texts and a small amount of manual simplifications with multiple references. Our work is the first to design automatic metrics that are effective for tuning and evaluating simplification systems, which will facilitate iterative development for this task.

Abstract:
This work will present one of the applications of infra-red technology for home automation. The objective of this paper is to control independent home electrical appliances through Infrared (IR) based remote control system. The controlling circuit is built around NodeMCU-ESP32, a compact relay module and an IR sensor. Any four General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO) pins are selected from the NodeMCU to control four specific applications such as room lighting, automated door locking system, running the water pump and fan. Women specially have a hectic and busy schedule for maintaining all the domestic household activities and they want almost all activities at the click of a button. If they could control those appliances with remote control button from a remote place, life would be at ease and simpler. With the above facts in mind, the present work is carried out to develop a device to simplify the operations of selected household activities to save time, energy and stress free life.

Abstract:
Abstract The subject of the article is the thermodynamic properties (tdp) of mixtures of Ar-Al, Ar-Cu and Ar-Fe in thermodynamic equilibrium state. In current published works the metals in the mixture are assumed to be in the gaseous state. In the present work, the metals are at a temperature of 0.3 kK crystalline substances which with increasing temperature change to liquid and gaseous substances. The proportion of metal in the mixture is in the interval from 0 to 100 mass%. The calculation results are presented in the figures and in detailed tables in the TDPtables.txt in the Supplementary material. The physical model of the calculation of tdp is a simplification of reality. The results of tdp calculation are affected not only by this simplification but also by the inaccuracy of input data. Attention is devoted to these simplifications and inaccuracies. The discontinuities of thermodynamic properties caused by phase transitions are analysed.

Abstract:
Introduction: This thesis was submitted by Matthew Shardlow to the University of Manchester for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the year 2015. Lexical simplification is the practice of automatically increasing the readability and understandability of a text by identifying problematic vocabulary and substituting easy to understand synonyms. This work describes the research undertaken during the course of a 4-year PhD. We have focused on the pipeline of operations which string together to produce lexical simplifications. We have identified key areas for research and allowed our results to influence the direction of our research. We have suggested new methods and ideas where appropriate. Objectives: We seek to further the field of lexical simplification as an assistive technology. Although the concept of fully-automated error-free lexical simplification is some way off, we seek to bring this dream closer to reality. Technology is ubiquitous in our information-based society. Ever-increasingly we consume news, correspondence and literature through an electronic device. E-reading gives us the opportunity to intervene when a text is too difficult. Simplification can act as an augmentative communication tool for those who find a text is above their reading level. Texts which would otherwise go unread would become accessible via simplification. Contributions: This PhD has focused on the lexical simplification pipeline. We have identified common sources of errors as well as the detrimental effects of these errors. We have looked at techniques to mitigate the errors at each stage of the pipeline. We have created the CW Corpus, a resource for evaluating the task of identifying complex words. We have also compared machine learning strategies for identifying complex words. We propose a new preprocessing step which yields a significant increase in identification performance. We have also tackled the related fields of word sense disambiguation and substitution generation. We evaluate the current state of the field and make recommendations for best practice in lexical simplification. Finally, we focus our attention on evaluating the effect of lexical simplification on the reading ability of people with aphasia. We find that in our small-scale preliminary study, lexical simplification has a nega- tive effect, causing reading time to increase. We evaluate this result and use it to motivate further work into lexical simplification for people with aphasia.

Abstract:
Complex Word Identification (CWI) is a task of identifying complex words in text data and it is often viewed as a subtask of Automatic Text Simplification (ATS) where the main task is making a complex text simpler. The ways in which a text should be simplified depend on the target readers such as second language learners or people with reading disabilities. In this thesis, we focus on Complex Word Identification for Swedish. First, in addition to exploring existing resources, we collect a new dataset for Swedish CWI. We continue by building several classifiers of Swedish simple and complex words. We then use the findings to analyze the characteristics of lexical complexity in Swedish and English. Our method for collecting training data based on second language learning material has shown positive evaluation scores and resulted in a new dataset for Swedish CWI. Additionally, the built complex word classifiers have an accuracy at least as good as similar systems for English. Finally, the analysis of the selected features confirms the findings of previous studies and reveals some interesting characteristics of lexical complexity.

Abstract:
In recent years, a large number of technologies have been created to help people who have difficulty when reading written texts. The proposed systems integrate speech technologies (reading aloud) or visual aids (setting and/or coloring of fonts or increasing the space between letters and lines). However, it is essential to also propose transformations on the texts’ content in order to have simpler and more frequent substitutes. The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to develop a reading aid system that automatically provides a simplified version of a given text while keeping the same meaning of words. The presented work addresses the problem of semantic ambiguity (quite common in natural language processing) and aims to propose solutions for Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) by using unsupervised and knowledge-based approaches from lexico-semantic resources. First, we propose a state of the art of the WSD approaches and semantic similarity measures which are crucial for this process. Thereafter, we compare various algorithms of WSD in order to get the best of them. Finally, we present our contributions for creating a lexical resource for French that proposes disambiguated and graduated synonyms according to their level of difficulty to be read and understood. We show that our resource is useful and can be integrated in a lexical simplification of texts module

Abstract:
Combining an effective decision-making process with worker participation: such an issue is central in the French representation system. A series of reforms emphasized a state of doubt when it comes to the best way to resolve it. Resulting from a slow maturation, the creation of a single representative body, the economic and social council, shall significantly affect labour relations. Concentrating powers previously spread, within companies having at least fifty employees, among staff delegates, the works council and the health and safety committee, this new representative body shall at first glance be a medium of simplification. Stimulating cooperation, the “new” staff representation law will likely produce radical changes. Encouraging collective bargaining, it carries various aspects. A systemic analysis is feasible provided that the key points of its implementation are identified. If this body is transformed into a company council, the situation of the union representation may be challenged

Abstract:
Trabalho Final de Mestrado Integrado, Ciências Farmacêuticas, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Farmácia, 2015
Background: The brand names of medicines are invented names that must be chosen to avoid misinterpretations and assure memorization. Objectives: To evaluate how participants' memorization was influenced by names with varying orthographic or phonological (reading way) structures - canonical and non- canonical names i.e. names write and read (or not) in accordance to Portuguese, respectively. Methods: Two experiments of memorization, one based on the writing of names and another on the identification of names in a list. The validated software SuperLab 5.0 was used. Names were randomly selected from all the brand names of the national prescribing guide. Two groups: 94 patients and 30 pharmacy professionals. Socio-demographic data were collected. A health literacy and a mini-mental state test were administered. Results: Patients presented worse memorization results than professionals, in particular with non-canonical names. The older and lower educated participants, as well as those participants with inadequate health literacy presented worst results. Cognition problems were not detected. Discussion and conclusion: In order to benefit patients' memorization of names and therapeutic safety, it seems advisable to study ways of adapting brand names to a native form before their market approval. This may be especially relevant for geriatric populations, knowing they are mainly polymedicated.

This thesis is used to study about the literature works which in Level 3 vol.1 and Level 3 vol.2 of “Japanese Graded Readers.” As one of the Japanese teaching materials, how to find out the pros and cons of the simplified literature works and how to make it work in class are two key points of this thesis. First, use the Japanese Reading Comprehension Support System which is named “Reading Tutor” to analyze the vocabularies of the original text and the simplified version. According to the result of this thesis, the vocabularies of the simplified version are easier than the original text. Second, compare the original text and the simplified version. There are five features: the simplification of words, the synonyms, the other structures of sentences, the omitted sentences and the additional remarks, the similarities and differences of Kanas. The simplified literature works can help the Japanese learner to read various writings. As a teacher, we have to improve the imagination and the speed of reading of Japanese learner. This thesis can explain how to use “Japanese Graded Readers” to teach Japanese learners. Hope this thesis will be used in Japanese education.

Abstract:
Budget constraints, issues related to the quality of public services and the citizens’ level of satisfaction with the new information and communication technologies demand and impose on the Administration new ways to operate. Starting from this demand, the present project aims to implement a model which can translate into modernizing the services composing the voluntary social service insurance of the Social Security System, through the introduction of the information and communication technologies. We want to single out one electronic service – The Voluntary on-line Social Insurance – accessible through the institutional site, www.segsocial. pt, from which the citizens will have access to a range of services such as the enrolment and the annulment of the enrolment on this contributory regime, as well as to a simulator of the monthly amount necessary to pay as contributions to this system. It is therefore our goal, within the sphere of internal procedures, to achieve an increase on the level of efficiency and productivity of the processes, by which the quality of the services offered can be improved, as well as the citizen’s level of satisfaction. It is also our objective, when proposing this model, to be able to treat processes with more transparency, equity and conformity to the law, as these are values associated with public service.

Abstract:
AbstractThe state-of-the-art superposition-based theorem provers for first-order logic rely on simplification orderings on terms to constrain the applicability of inference rules, which in turn shapes the ensuing search space. The popular Knuth-Bendix simplification ordering is parameterized by symbol precedence—a permutation of the predicate and function symbols of the input problem’s signature. Thus, the choice of precedence has an indirect yet often substantial impact on the amount of work required to complete a proof search successfully. This paper describes and evaluates a symbol precedence recommender, a machine learning system that estimates the best possible precedence based on observations of prover performance on a set of problems and random precedences. Using the graph convolutional neural network technology, the system does not presuppose the problems to be related or share a common signature. When coupled with the theorem prover Vampire and evaluated on the TPTP problem library, the recommender is found to outperform a state-of-the-art heuristic by more than 4 % on unseen problems.

Abstract:
AbstractReasoning with quantifiers and theories is at the core of many applications in program analysis and verification. Whilst the problem is undecidable in general and hard in practice, we have been making large pragmatic steps forward. Our previous work proposed an instantiation rule for theory reasoning that produced pragmatically useful instances. Whilst this led to an increase in performance, it had its limitations as the rule produces ground instances which (i) can be overly specific, thus not useful in proof search, and (ii) contribute to the already problematic search space explosion as many new instances are introduced. This paper begins by introducing that specifically addresses these two concerns as it produces general solutions and it is a simplification rule, i.e. it replaces an existing clause by a ‘simpler’ one. Encouraged by initial success with this new rule, we performed an experiment to identify further common cases where the complex structure of theory terms blocked existing methods. This resulted in four further simplification rules for theory reasoning. The resulting extensions are implemented in the Vampire theorem prover and evaluated on SMT-LIB, showing that the new extensions result in a considerable increase in the number of problems solved, including 90 problems unsolved by state-of-the-art SMT solvers.

Abstract:
AbstractDespite the large number of sophisticated deep neural network (DNN) verification algorithms, DNN verifier developers, users, and researchers still face several challenges. First, verifier developers must contend with the rapidly changing DNN field to support new DNN operations and property types. Second, verifier users have the burden of selecting a verifier input format to specify their problem. Due to the many input formats, this decision can greatly restrict the verifiers that a user may run. Finally, researchers face difficulties in re-using benchmarks to evaluate and compare verifiers, due to the large number of input formats required to run different verifiers. Existing benchmarks are rarely in formats supported by verifiers other than the one for which the benchmark was introduced. In this work we present DNNV, a framework for reducing the burden on DNN verifier researchers, developers, and users. DNNV standardizes input and output formats, includes a simple yet expressive DSL for specifying DNN properties, and provides powerful simplification and reduction operations to facilitate the application, development, and comparison of DNN verifiers. We show how DNNV increases the support of verifiers for existing benchmarks from 30% to 74%.

Abstract:
In this paper, we estimate agricultural productivity change at country level based on the same data employed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the current reference data source, using a stochastic frontier model instead of the growth accounting method. The use of a stochastic frontier model is motivated by the opportunity to overcome the limitation of USDA estimates which rely on approximated and imputed input cost shares, and of the growth accounting method in general, which ignores technical inefficiency. We found that, in general, USDA estimates are higher in absolute value than ours but in substantial agreement, confirming the different theoretical foundations of the two methods and suggesting the empirical validity of both of them. Furthermore, our results show that the assumption of constant returns to scale made by many authors appears just a simplification and not a real property of the production processes of the various countries. This work has the value to provide, for the first time in the literature, a comparison between agricultural productivity changes estimated with different methodologies, and an additional data source that can be employed in a large variety of longitudinal economic analyses at country level.

Abstract:
The question on easy access to medical and health information by patients has attracted attention of the society and researchers. It has been indeed observed that poor understanding of medical and health information by patients may be harmful for their healthcare process. We assume that simplification and adaptation of technical documents may provide a solution to this situation. While the dedicated guidelines to the simplification summarize different kinds of criteria to consider, actually, it is still difficult to respect all these criteria. Usually, automatic systems for text simplification address some lexical or syntactic transformations. Besides, little work is done on simplification and adaptation of medical and health texts. We propose to combine lexical and syntactic simplification within a rulebased system, and to make it more fine-grained through additional processing. More particularly, we consider transformation of passive sentences into active sentences, and we control the grammatical concordance within sentences. We work with technical medical documents in French. The results are mainly evaluated according to the three measures specifically dedicated to the simplification: semantics, simplicity and grammaticality.

Abstract:
Abstract Model selection methods are used in different scientific contexts to represent a characteristic data set in terms of a reduced number of parameters. Apparently, these methods have not found their way in the multibody systems dynamics literature. Multibody models can be considered parametric models in terms of their dynamic parameters and model selection techniques can then be used to express these models in terms of a reduced number of parameters. These parameter-reduced models are expected to have a computational complexity smaller than the original one, and still preserve the desired level of accuracy. They are also known to be good candidates for parameter estimation purposes. In this work, simulations of the actual model are used to define a data set representative of the standard working conditions of the system. A parameter-reduced model is chosen and its parameter values estimated so that they minimize a prediction error on these data. To that end, model selection heuristics as well as normalized error measures are proposed. Using this methodology two multibody systems with very different characteristic mobility are analyzed. Very important reductions in the number of parameters and in the computational cost are obtained without compromising too much on the reduced model accuracy. As an aside result, a generalization of the base parameter concept to the context of parameter-reduced models is proposed.

Abstract:
Previous work by the authors developed a junction-inactivity-based structural simplification technique for bondgraph models. The technique is highly sensitive to the orientation of the body coordinate frames in multibody systems: improper alignment of body coordinate frames may prohibit a significant simplification. This paper demonstrates how the Karhunen-Loe`ve expansion can be used to automatically detect the existence of and to find the transformation into body coordinate frames that render the bond-graph of a multibody system more conducive to simplification. The conclusion is that the Karhunen-Loe`ve expansion complements well the junction-inactivity-based structural simplification technique when multibody dynamics are involved in the system.

Abstract:
One of the challenging problems that hinder the development of collaborative design systems is the contradiction of large CAD files and the limited speed to share them over the Internet and Web. 3D streaming technique, which can allow effective and efficient dispatch and access of large-volume CAD data as a series of patched streams across the Internet, provides a promising solution to overcome the obstacle. Geometric simplification (or decimation) of 3D models is the key algorithm to realize the streaming technique. In this paper, a new geometric simplification algorithm has been developed, in which two criteria are the crucial elements to control the collapse process for edges in 3D VRML models to reduce the amount of information. The major feature of the algorithm is that it has incorporated some advantages of the previously developed vertex decimation approach and edge collapse approach. Meanwhile, the mechanism of adaptive threshold parameters adopted in this work enhances the adaptability of the algorithm for various applications. Through case studies and comparisons with some related works, the algorithm shows good performance and potentials in terms of efficiency, adaptability and robustness.

Abstract:
Present work proposes approach that significantly shortens the calculation time for NPSH(r). This time is comparable with time for the head calculations. Most cavitation models take into account phase change, bubble dynamics, turbulent pressure fluctuations, etc. In this case multiphase flow model must be used. This work presents some simplifications, based on the physical nature of cavitation on the pump impeller, which significantly (10–50 times) reduces the calculation time of NPSH (r). The main idea of proposed procedure is to determine the liquid vapor (cavitation) zone simply from steady state calculation of one phase incompressible flow without taking into account multiphase effects. Based on absolute pressure distribution it is easy to determine areas with absolute pressure lower then saturated liquid vapor pressure for given liquid conditions. Consequently it is possible to consider the steady state location of liquid vapor (cavitation) on the impeller vanes. So this zone may simply be expelled from the flow domain. For many pump related cases, these zones are very close to cavitation areas, and give main impact on the head of the pump. Commercial Fluent 12.1.4 code is used for calculations. Proposed procedure for NPSH(r) calculation is in good agreement with test data for different types of pumps and may be used as a tool to shorten a design process for new pumps.

Abstract:
The inherent complexity of modelling welding processes and the lack of computational power available to analysts has resulted in simplified methods being commonly utilised when predicting residual stresses. Despite considerable advances in computational power, it is still often not possible to run detailed 3D analyses of complex welded geometries within practical timescales. Against this background, a programme of work has been undertaken to develop a weld modelling procedure which can be followed by analysts. This procedure will account for how various modelling simplifications affect the predicted values of residual stress. One common geometry, which it is often necessary to analyse using modelling simplifications is that of a thin-walled pipe butt weld. Typically this geometry is simulated using a 2D axisymmetric analysis. Despite the popularity of this modelling simplification the effects of its use are not fully understood. In order to feed into this procedure, work has therefore been conducted to better understand the effects modelling simplifications will have on the residual stress levels that are predicted when simulating multi-pass pipe butt welds. The geometry considered in this study is the thin walled austenitic pipe butt weld specimen originally studied in VORSAC 5th Framework European Union project. This paper presents the results of a number of finite element analyses conducted of this geometry. These analyses have been conducted using a combination of the finite element codes SYSWELD and ABAQUS. The aim of this study was to understand the effect that the use of 2D axisymmetric analyses, and other modelling simplifications, namely block dumping and bead lumping will have on the predicted values of residual stress.
