Abstract:
Established in 1960, the Museum van het Boek is known for its holdings and exhibitions of Western book art from the last 110 years. Building on the starter collections of two donors, a private printer and a bibliophile, the Museum’s acquisitions now focus mainly on modern book art. More than 25,000 of the 450,000 objects in the Museum are books showing the development of standard Dutch publishing, the work of individual book illustrators, type designers and calligraphers, contemporary Dutch private presses and artists’ books. There is also considerable foreign material, notably from Germany and Great Britain.

Abstract:
The article analyzed the works of scientists (Avtomonova P. P., Boyko Y. V., and Zaichenko I. V., Zenkin A. S., Karandasheva V. N., Kirdyaeva V. M., Kuzmenko N. M., Lasch A P., Lvov I. P., Pylhaeva F. P,. Pogrebna Ya. A., Czerniawska A. P.), who developed methods of optimal study book, textbook and other paper media. Types of independent work with the coursebook, additional materials are necessary to have when studying or reading books and other manuals. Selected types of readers (based on lectures “Students' independent work with the book” by I. P. Lvov), the preferences of readers on the nature of the literature and recommendations for its choice. It is substantiated that, according to I. P. Lvov, the book plays an important role in the development of thinking and speech culture of students. The Ukrainian teacher singled out four groups of students. Representatives of the first group are only interested in the reading process. To the second group of readers I. P. Lvov included people who like to read adventure literature and detective stories. The third group consisted of readers who are interested in serious, scientific literature, new books of modern bookstores. To the fourth type of readers, the scientist referred those who seek knowledge and therefore makes serious demands on the book. It is proved that the Ukrainian teacher emphasized that the effectiveness of reading books is possible if the reader has a system of knowledge in a particular field, has the skills of good orientation in the text with the selection of basic principles and ideas. The result of mental work should be clearly designed in the form of writing or speaking, and the effectiveness of the process of working with the book depends not only on speed but also on the method of reading.

Review of the book: Stolyarov Yu. Rubakin revisited / Yury N. Stolyarov: Russian School Library Association ; Librarianship Department of the International Informatization Academy ; Russian State Library ; Research Center of Book Culture Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences ; National Library of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). – Moscow : RUSLA, 2019. – 416 p., ill.The reviewer emphasizes the importance of the reviewed book, as Nicholas Rubakin’s work of researcher and educator, has not been studied comprehensively yet. The publication coincides with Rubakin’s 160-th anniversary. The reviewer characterizes the book structure and the contents of its five chapters: “The Life”, “The Foreign Native”, “The Focus of N. A. Rubakin’s Creative Interests”, “Bibliopsychological Portraits”, and “The Author of Integral Philosophy”.Yu. N. Stolyarov characterizes Nicholas Rubakin as a science communicator, expert of self-education and (kids) reading guidance and, most of all, as a founder of bibliopsychological theory. The reviewer examines the key works by Rubakin for each of the above-mentioned areas, e.g. “The secret of library work success”, “What the bibliological psychology is”, The Psychology of readers and books”, “Importance of the books”, “On the methodology of the book business”, “The book market in Soviet Russia and its psychology”. The reviewer makes a focus on Rubakin’s masterwork –“Among books” and on Stolyarov’s footnotes that expand the book text and reader knowledge, and points to the book design.

Abstract:
Abstract Each of these books presents itself as rescuing Nietzsche from misinterpretation. Thus, Leiter wants to prevent Nietzsche from being “moralized” (i. e., read in a way that makes him sound like a contemporary moral philosopher); Stern wants to prevent Nietzsche from being iron-manned (i. e., read in a way that assumes his arguments must be invulnerable to critique); Alfano wants to correct what he sees as a tendency to misrepresent Nietzsche’s central concerns; and Ridley claims writers have been misled when thinking about Nietzsche on action. Alfano’s book is, to my mind, the most successful at achieving its stated aims; while I point out some potential oversights and some areas that could benefit from further development, Alfano’s book is both novel and important. Leiter’s book is clearly written and presents the arguments in an admirably forthright manner, but some of its conclusions are vitiated by lapses and mischaracterizations. Stern gets Nietzsche’s basic view right, but does not probe it very deeply and is too quick to present Nietzsche as confused; I see the confusions as emanating less from Nietzsche’s texts and more from Stern’s reading of them. Ridley’s book is original and provocative, but I find the central claim – that Nietzsche endorses an expressive account of action – ultimately unconvincing.

Roscoe, Lucy. "A thing to hold: The visual language of the book form." Journal of Illustration 6, no. 1 (2019): 77–98. http://dx.doi.org/10.1386/jill_00005_1.

Full text
Abstract:
This article considers the book form itself as an ornamental object. The binding, paper and ink appeal to the senses and all add to experience of the reader. The future is a place of e-books, online publications and Instagram posts, and yet this arguably makes the carefully considered design of the book form even more important in the physical books that we do chose to view. The study examines a series of examples, drawing from artists' books, pop-up books and mainstream publishing. The work draws strongly on the collection of pop-up books at the National Library of Scotland and the artists' book collection at Edinburgh College of Art, looking at both historical and contemporary works. Initially exploring how the form of the book itself can visually communicate a narrative, the study goes on reflect on the emotion associated with opening a pop-up book, as if in the presence of a theatrical production, made more extreme by the embellishments employed. The place of the book form within a digital world is considered and, finally, the emergence of decorative books in the form of colouring books related to mindfulness.

Full text
Abstract:
Sharing a good book with a friend is one of the most fundamental experiences children need as they develop their identities as readers. In our libraries, we create spaces for children to find a great book, read it with support from others, and finally share those stories with their peers. In my university classes, I create similar structures for my undergraduate students studying children’s literature, and I model how to share books most effectively with children. As a class, we read several middle grade novels together, discussing the stories, sharing our interpretations, and brainstorming ways to share this literature with children.Recently, we engaged in a study of the work of Gary D. Schmidt, and it ignited an interest and a passion in my students for the power his books can hold when shared with middle grade students. Small groups completed an in-depth project on this author’s work, and three students reached out to Schmidt to see if he would complete a personal interview. He agreed, much to their delight, and they shared the completed interview in class.

Abstract:
We analyze the qualitative and quantitative composition of the book collection of the civil press of the 18th century, which are in the collection of the Tambov regional universal library named after A.S. Pushkin (hereinafter TRUL). The relevance of the work is connected with the need to restore an objective picture of the creation and functioning of manor libraries of the late 18th century as an element of the cultural environment. The implementation of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research project allowed showing the world of the Tambov book of the 18th century in all its diversity. The novelty of the work lies in a system approach to the study of the array of books in Russian and foreign languages of pre-revolutionary libraries of the Russian province. We consider Tambov collections of foreign books of the 18th century, system information of which is currently absent in historiography and appears only as separate mentions in the works of local historians. The work with the existing repertoire of the library showed the key importance of Derzhavin library for the formation of modern Tambov collections of rare books of the 18th century. It is shown that the main array of the identified publications reflects the products of the Capital printing houses of the 18th century. The variety of thematic composition of the revealed collections is demonstrated. Among these collections of TRUL books there are publications on history, literature, philosophy, religion and natural sciences. The research proves that the study of the composition of the book collections of civil press of the 18th century gives important information for the study of book culture of the Tambov province, allows to analyze the appearance of the book works in the region and to find out the degree of attention to foreign and Russian media. Also it allows to detect the role of the book in the structure of cultural environment.

Abstract:
This article presents a holistic approach to the study of genres in book publishing that includes formal aspects of literary texts, marketing strategies and categorisations used by producers, and perspectives on how these labels are perceived by readers and critics, as well as a temporal and spatial understanding of how genres evolve. The empirical point of departure is the recent boom in Nordic Noir, exemplified by the following three Swedish authors successful in the 21st century: Lars Kepler, Jens Lapidus and Camilla Läckberg. The discourses surrounding Nordic Noir and how these authors and their writing relate and get related to it are used as an example of how book-trade genres operate in multiple and complex ways, and how genres produce effects that move back and forth among creators, producers and consumers. It proposes a twofold model, where genres are understood as constituted by all of the relations between these areas together. Through Kepler, Lapidus and Läckberg, the article shows how Nordic Noir has emerged over the years; how it changes with its publishing context; and how the genre’s internal discrepancy between literary content and marketing and reception is a crucial component in understanding Nordic Noir.

Abstract:
AbstractPHerc 1669, formerly identified with book 5, book 7 and book 10 of Philodemus’ On Rhetoric, actually transmits book 20. The book number – a clear Κ – is still legible in the final title of the papyrus. This means that On Rhetoric was in precisely or at least 20 books, depending on whether or not PHerc 1669 is to be considered the final book of the work.
