Lambert, Spencer Francis. "Examining Large Game Utility and Transport Decisions by Fremont Hunters: A Study of Faunal Bone from Wolf Village, Utah." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2018. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6832.

Full text
Abstract:
This analysis of faunal bones from Wolf Village focuses on large game and its utility, as evidenced by what is known as the modified general utility index (MGUI). The MGUI proposes that bones at sites reflect transportation and butchering choices made by hunters at kill-butchering sites. According to the assumptions associated with the MGUI, hunters should select animal portions with high food value. The MGUI has been used in Fremont archaeology to provide a rough measure of site function. The expectation is that faunal bones would accompany the prized cuts of large game meat at habitation sites – and the animal parts with little food value would remain at kill-butchering sites because they are not worth the cost to carry them to the village. My analysis of large game animal bones found in excavations at Wolf Village counter these expectations. Fremont hunters at Wolf Village were returning to the site with low-caloric portions of large game, at least part of the time. Results from strontium isotope analysis suggest that many of the large game individuals hunted by the Fremont were not local to the immediate area. This suggests that hunters saw utility in low-caloric elements not related only to food value. Some low-caloric skeletal elements were used by the Fremont to construct bone tools and other objects, and as possible symbolic objects used in abandonment rituals. The results of this research suggests that the MGUI is not appropriate for measuring the utility of animal portions to the Fremont. Only when considering the social and non-caloric economic reasons for transporting low caloric elements, can archaeologists discover the true utility of large game animal parts to Fremont hunters.

Abstract:
Bone is a plastic tissue, changing in density and size with different levels of stress. Furthermore, it appears that BMD is altered in a site specific manner. However, BMD has not been studied extensively in all types of athletes, particularly well trained strengthpower athletes, such as throwers. The pwpose of this study was to examine the BMD of USA Division I collegiate throwers (shot put, discus, etc.). BMD was compared to normative data and to different athletes. Measures of whole body maximum strength and throwing performance were correlated with BMDs. Potential right/left side and sex differences were examined. Athletes were 4 males, 3 females age 19.9 ± 0.9 years. BMD was measured with a DEXA Maximum isometric strength was measured using a midthigh pull standing on a force plate. Force time-curves were generated during the strength tests. Peale force (PF) and normalized pealc force (PFa) were correlated with BMDs. Comparison indicates throwers have denser bones compared to normative data and compared to other types of athletes. Male throwers tend to have greater total body BMD than female throwers (p < 0.05). Dominant arm showed slightly greater BMD compared to non-dominant (p < 0.05). Furthermore, BMD is related to PF (r = 0.68) and PFa (r = 0.56). Throwers have greater BMD's than non-athletes or most other types of athletes. However, throwers showed only a small indication of sidedness. These observations likely stem from their training program (whole body heavy loading).

Abstract:
AIM: Bone changes in size and density in response to different levels of stress. Alterations to bone mineral density (BMD) appear to occur in a site specific manner. Even though BMD has been examined in many populations there is a paucity of data looking at strength-power athletes, such as throwers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the BMD of a group of USA Division I collegiate throwers (e.g. shot put, discus, etc.). METHODS: Seven throwers (4 males; 3 females) who were 19.0 ± 0.9 years had their BMD compared to an age matched control group (n=14; 8 women and 6 men) and normative data. BMD was measured with dual X-ray absorptometry. Potential right/left side and sex difference in BMD were also examined. Maximal isometric strength was assessed using a mid-thigh pull while standing on a forceplate which generated force-time curves. Peak force (PF) and normalized peak force (PFa) were then correlated with BMDs. RESULTS: Generally, throwers had denser bones with male throwers tending to have a greater total BMD (P≤0.05). The dominant arm BMD was slightly greater when compared to non-dominant arm (P≤0.05). Furthermore, total body BMD was related to PF (r=0.68, r2 =0.46) and PFa (r=0.56, r2=0.31). CONCLUSIONS: Throwers have greater BMDs than non-athletes and most other athletes. However, throwers only showed a small indication of sidedness. It is likely that the BMDs observed in this study stem from the training intervention (e.g. whole body heavy lifting) undertaken by this population.

"Low Gene Expression of Bone Morphogenetic Protein 7 in Brainstem Astrocytes in Major Depression." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2012. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/8602.

Full text
Abstract:
The noradrenergic locus coeruleus (LC) is the principal source of brain norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter thought to play a major role in the pathology of major depressive disorder (MDD) and in the therapeutic action of many antidepressant drugs. The goal of this study was to identify potential mediators of brain noradrenergic dysfunction in MDD. Bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7), a member of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily, is a critical mediator of noradrenergic neuron differentiation during development and has neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects on mature catecholaminergic neurons. Real-time PCR of reversed transcribed RNA isolated from homogenates of LC tissue from 12 matched pairs of MDD subjects and psychiatrically normal control subjects revealed low levels of BMP7 gene expression in MDD. No differences in gene expression levels of other members of the BMP family were observed in the LC, and BMP7 gene expression was normal in the prefrontal cortex and amygdala in MDD subjects. Laser capture microdissection of noradrenergic neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes from the LC revealed that BMP7 gene expression was highest in LC astrocytes relative to the other cell types, and that the MDD-associated reduction in BMP7 gene expression was limited to astrocytes. Rats exposed to chronic social defeat exhibited a similar reduction in BMP7 gene expression in the LC. BMP7 has unique developmental and trophic actions on catecholamine neurons and these findings suggest that reduced astrocyte support for pontine LC neurons may contribute to pathology of brain noradrenergic neurons in MDD.

Karr, Landon Patrick. "The analysis and interpretation of fragmented mammoth bone assemblages : experiments in bone fracture with archaeological applications." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3590.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of flaked mammoth bone tools from the Late Pleistocene is a topic that has inspired great interest in the archaeological community for the last 40 years. The interpretation of evidence of culturally modified mammoth bone tools has varied widely across both time and space. At different times and in different places, flaked bone toolmaking has been interpreted across the geographic expanse of the North American continent, from Beringia to central Mexico, and through a vast timeframe, from 120,000 years ago, until as recently as 10,000 years ago. The study of these purported flaked bone tool assemblages has taken many forms, and has involved efforts to understand broken mammoth bone assemblages by drawing analogies to stone toolmaking strategies, by understanding the multitude of taphonomic processes that affect archaeological bone assemblages, and by attempting to differentiate the effects of natural and cultural processes. This thesis reports on a series of experiments designed to lend new actualistic evidence to the debate surrounding flaked bone toolmaking. These experiments include investigations into the effect of different environmental conditions on the degradation of bones, the flaking characteristics of both fresh and frozen bones, and the effect of rockfall as a taphonomic process on bones exposed to different real-world environments. These experiments, paired with a body of previous research, provide a basis in actualistic and taphonomic research that allows for the reassessment of archaeological and paleontological broken mammoth bone assemblages. This thesis includes the reassessment and detailed taphonomic analysis of four mammoth bone assemblages relevant to understanding cultural bone modification and the effect of non-cultural taphonomic processes. New interpretations of zooarchaeological assemblages from Lange/Ferguson (South Dakota, USA), Owl Cave (Idaho, USA), Inglewood (Maryland, USA), and Kent’s Cavern (Devon, UK) reveal new data that revise the understanding of the nature of these assemblages, and the effect of both natural and cultural bone fracturing agencies.

Ries, Adrienne Sandra. "Psycho-social problems identified by adult bone marrow transplant survivors." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/23344.

Full text
Abstract:
Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) offers many patients who are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and aplastic anaemia the opportunity of increased survival. Chemotherapy is one of the most common forms of treatment for cancer patients en-route to BMT, which is often a concomitant stressor in the patient's life. Due to the side effects of chemotherapy, patients are often required to remain in a protective isolation unit for several weeks at a time. In most cases, BMT constitutes the final phase of the treatment process. This procedure is not without its risks and may create significant psychosocial stress for patients. Social work intervention in the Department of Haematology at Groote Schuur Hospital has focused primarily on newly diagnosed patients and those patients undergoing transplantation. However, with the increased success of BMT, it is important to address the needs of cancer survivors. An ongoing support group with BMT survivors, provided the opportunity for the researcher to conduct a qualitative exploratory study of how survivors conceptualise and describe their current lives. To this end, fifteen group sessions were tape recorded and the self-identified issues raised by the members were organised into themes. It was ascertained that adjustment post BMT was stressful for most of the survivors. In general, survivors experienced numerous losses in terms of intimate and social relationships, memory and sexual functioning. Anxiety was pervasive and was heightened by an underlying fear of relapse. However, survivors also acknowledged the positive benefits of having been diagnosed with cancer and undergoing a BMT, such as improved family relationships, renewed interest in religion and the changing of attitudes and values. Members utilised numerous coping skills including denial, avoidance, rationalisation, confrontation and problem solving in an attempt to master their situation. The group experience was viewed favourably by members who formed a strong bond as a result of their shared experiences. Some of the survivors were able to use the group to express fears that they felt uncomfortable to express elsewhere. BMT survivors enter a distinct phase of adjustment with the re-entry into their premorbid lifestyles. Preparation is essential if this phase is to mastered. Further research across race and cultural groupings is required in order to ensure that social work intervention is appropriate to all in South Africa.

Fagelson, Marc A., Colleen Noe, Jennifer Blevins, and Owen Murnane. "Bone Conduction Transmission and Head‐Shadow Effects for Unilateral Hearing Losses Fit with Transcranial Cic Hearing Aids." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2000. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/1584.

Full text
Abstract:
Bone conduction transmission and head‐shadow effects were determined with transcranial completely‐in‐the‐canal (TCCIC) CROS hearing aids. Five subjects with documented profound unilateral hearing loss and experience with traditional CROS/BICROS fittings (TCROS) were tested with a CIC hearing aid placed in their poorer ear. Peak SPL was measured at the tympanic membrane and ranged from 105–115 dB SPL at 2000 Hz. Pure‐tone crossover thresholds and functional gain tested at frequencies from 250–8000 Hz varied considerably more than the SPL measures. The pure‐tone results indicated that sensitivity in the better ear was moderately associated with functional gain across frequency. Speech recognition was then tested in the sound field in two conditions: direct (noise in the poorer ear, speech in the better ear) and indirect (noise in the better ear, speech in the poorer ear) at S/Ns of −6, 0, +6, +12, and quiet. The TCCIC fittings were more effective than TCROS aids across S/Ns, particularly in the direct condition. In the indirect condition, the two fittings performed similarly. When data were pooled across conditions, the TCCIC aids provided better word recognition than the TCROS aids, particularly for those subjects with greater sensitivity in the better ear.

Abstract:
The road to competence in writing is best paved with joyful experiences, especially early experiences with writing in the elementary school. One such experience is writing a story and making a beautiful cloth-bound book. Materials needed, which are easily obtained, are:(1) a commercially produced material called Heat-N-Bond (Ultra);(2) mat board or heavy weight poster board;(3)heavy weight paper in a variety of colors;(4) cloth in bright patterns or any other choice;(5) plain white photocopy paper;(6)long arm stapler; and (7) clothes irons. After assembling the book in 10 easy steps, photos or pictures from magazines or other sources maybe put on the cover or drawings can also be used. The cost of each book is approximately 65 cents. An easily transportable file tote box can be useful for keeping materials on hand.. Children can make several books and display them during a young authors' conference in the classroom.

Full text
Abstract:
The lasting integrity of the bond between bone cement and bone defines the long-term stability of cemented acetabular replacements. Although several studies have been carried out on bone-cement interface at continuum level, micromechanics of the interface has been studied only recently for tensile and shear loading cases. Furthermore, the mechanical and microstructural behaviour of this interface is complex due to the variation in morphology and properties that can arise from a range of factors. In this work in vitro studies of the bone-cement interfacial behaviour under selected loading conditions were carried out using a range of experimental techniques. Damage development in cemented acetabular reconstructs was studied under a combined physiological loading block representative of routine activities in a saline environment. A custom-made environmental chamber was developed to allow testing of acetabular reconstructs in a wet condition for the first time and damage was monitored and detected by scanning at selected loading intervals using micro-focus computed tomography (μCT). Preliminary results showed that, as in dry cases, debonding at the bone-cement interface defined the failure of the cement fixation. However, the combination of mechanical loading and saline environment seems to affect the damage initiation site, drastically reducing the survival lives of the reconstructs. Interfacial behaviour of the bone-cement interface was studied under tensile, shear and mixed-mode loading conditions. Bone-cement coupons were first mechanically tested and then μCT imaged. The influence of the loading angle, the extent of the cement penetration and the failure mechanisms with regard to the loading mode on the interfacial behaviour were examined. Both mechanical testing and post failure morphologies seem to suggest an effect of the loading angle on the failure mechanism of the interface. The micromechanical performance of bone-cement interface under compression was also examined. The samples were tested in step-wise compression using a custom-made micromechanical loading stage within the μCT chamber, and the damage evolution with load was monitored. Results showed that load transfer in bone-cement interface occurred mainly in the bone-cement contact region, resulting in progressively developed deformation due to trabeculae bending and buckling. Compressive and fatigue behaviour of bovine cancellous bone and selected open-cell metallic foams were studied also, and their suitability as bone analogous materials for cemented biomechanical testing was investigated. Whilst the morphological parameters of the foams and the bone appear to be closer, the mechanical properties vary significantly between the foams and the bone. However, despite the apparent differences in their respective properties, the general deformation behaviour is similar across the bone and the foams. Multi-step fatigue tests were carried out to study the deformation behaviour under increasing compressive cyclic stresses. Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterise the microstructure of foams and bone prior to and post mechanical testing. The results showed that residual strain accumulation is the predominant driving force leading to failure of foams and bones. Although foams and bone fail by the same mechanism of cyclic creep, the deformation behaviour at the transient region of each step was different for both materials. Preliminary results of foam-cement interface performance under mixed-mode loading conditions are also presented.

Hosey, Amanda C. "A History of Bones." FIU Digital Commons, 2012. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/618.

Full text
Abstract:
A HISTORY OF BONES is a collection of lyrical and narrative poems which examines the interconnectedness of humanity through recurrent physical images—bones, blood, hair, etc. These images reflect the commonalities of the human race at the most basic level by pointing to the unavoidable fate all living things share. The poems build on popular culture, politics, world history, and mythology to show the universality of human “baggage”. As the title poem says, “We carry all our histories with us where we go.” Over time, and all over the world, people exist as history collectors amassing experiences, both shared and unique, to which they must surrender and accept as parts of themselves. The collection is divided into three sections, which move from “local history” to “national history” and, finally, to “global history.” Poems in the first section, “Five Acres,” focus on personal history, including the history of the American South. The section title poem, “Five Acres of Pine Trees,” uses the scenery of the heavily-wooded land of rural Alabama as a means to discuss both the absurdity of invisible boundary lines and the wars which arise in relation to them. Poems in the second section, “Domestic Dream,” examine various ideas associated with the United States, such as modern politics, the country’s history of wars, post-post feminism, domesticity, and identity. The section’s title poem is a persona poem which follows the speaker from a kitchen to a fantasy world of fishing on a remote Greek island and back to real life. The collection’s final section, “Ode to the Globe” simultaneously pans out to encompass various cultures, languages, world regions, and points in history while pinpointing the emotional strain of carrying one’s histories. This section’s title poem imagines a character in love with the idea of world cultures, languages and historic places, who obsesses over these things, but views them through books, rather than personally encountering them. All three sections are braided together by the shared emotions of all peoples: nostalgia, regret, anxiety, hatred, passion, and longing. Thematically A HISTORY OF BONES shares elements with the work of Janet McAdams who often examines a single forgotten moment in history told from the perspective of a semi-removed speaker. The poems within the collection often depend on vivid, carefully attended details reminiscent of Elizabeth Bishop and Adrienne Rich. The poems also are influenced by e.e. cumming’s frequent word creation. The poems in the collection, however, are most influenced by the work of John Rybicki, specifically his third collection, We Bed Down into Water and the oddly juxtaposed images found in his work.

Abstract:
Summary: The FRAX algorithm assesses the patient’s probability of sustaining an osteoporotic fracture and can be calculated with or without densitometric data. This study seeks to determine whether in men, FRAX scores calculated without BMD, correctly identify patients with BMD-defined osteoporosis. Introduction: The diagnosis of osteoporosis is based on densitometric data, the presence of a fragility fracture or increased fracture risk. The FRAX algorithm estimates the patient’s 10-year probability of sustaining an osteoporotic fracture and can be calculated with or without BMD data. The purpose of this study is to determine whether in men, FRAX calculated without BMD, can correctly identify patients with BMD-defined osteoporosis. Methods: Retrospectively retrieved data from 726 consecutive Caucasian males, 50 to 70 years old referred to our Osteoporosis Center. Results: In the population studied, 11.8 and 25.3% had BMD-defined osteoporosis when female and male reference populations were used respectively. When the National Osteoporosis Foundation thresholds to initiate treatment are used, only 27% of patients with BMD-defined osteoporosis, but 4% with normal BMD reached/exceeded these thresholds. Lowering the threshold increased sensitivity, but decreased specificity. Conclusions: Our results suggest that FRAX without BMD is not sensitive/specific enough to be used to identify Caucasian men 50 to 70 years old with BMD-defined osteoporosis.

Full text
Abstract:
Tissue engineering is a promising alternative strategy to produce artificial bone substitutes
however, the control of the cell organization and cell behavior to create fully functional 3-D constructs has not yet been achieved. To overcome these, activities have been concentrated on the development of multi-functional tissue engineering scaffolds capable of delivering the required bioactive agents to initiate and control cellular activities. The aim of this study was to prepare tissue engineered constructs composed of polymeric scaffolds seeded with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) carrying a nanoparticulate growth factor delivery system that would sequentially deliver the growth factors in order to mimic the natural bone healing process. To achieve this, BMP-2 and BMP-7, the osteogenic growth factors, were encapsulated in different polymeric nanocapsules (poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)) with different properties (degradation rates, crystallinity) and, therefore, different release rates to achieve the early release of BMP-2 followed by the release of BMP-7, as it is in nature. Initially, these nanoparticulate delivery systems were characterized and then the effect of single, simultaneous and sequential delivery of BMP-2 and BMP-7 from these delivery systems was studied in vitro using rat bone marrow MSCs. The effect of using these two growth factors in a sequential manner by mimicking their natural bioavailability timing was shown with maximized osteogenic activity results. BMP-2 loaded PLGA nanocapsules were subcutaneously implanted into Wistar rats and according to initial results, their biocompatibility as well as the positive effect of BMP-2 release on the formation of osteoclast-like cells was shown. To complete the construction of the bioactive scaffold, this nanoparticulate sequential delivery system was incorporated into two different types of polymeric systems
natural (chitosan) and synthetic (poly(&
#949
-caprolactone) (PCL)). 3-D fibrous scaffolds were produced using these materials by wet spinning and 3-D plotting. Incorporation of nanocapsules into 3-D chitosan scaffolds was studied by two different methods: incorporation within and onto chitosan fibers. Incorporation into 3-D PCL scaffolds was achieved by coating the nanocapsules onto the fibers of the scaffolds in an alginate layer. With both scaffold systems, incorporation of nanocapsule populations capable of delivering BMP-2 and BMP-7 in single, simultaneous and sequential fashion was achieved. As with free nanocapsules, the positive effect of sequential delivery on the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs was shown with both scaffold systems, creating multi-functional scaffolds capable of inducing bone healing.

Abstract:
Imatinib mesylate has been associated with the changes in bone turnover. We report a case of the development of tissue calcification in a patient on long-term therapy with this drug. A 48-year-old male patient with gastrointestinal stromal tumor and liver metastasis complained of abdominal pain. His treatment included hepatic artery chemoembolization and partial hepatectomy in addition to chronic imatinib mesylate for 4 years. On physical examination, he had a peritoneal mass just beneath the laparotomy incision scar that, after resection, was found to be dystrophic bone formation. Based on the previous studies suggesting bone changes due to chronic therapy with imatinib mesylate, we believe that the patient's new bone formation was causally related to the use of this drug. To our knowledge, there are no similar reported cases in the literature.

Boyd, Gyda D. "Beliefs About Animal Assisted Interventions Among Medical Social Workers." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/408.

Full text
Abstract:
Animal‑Assisted Intervention (AAI) is used to significantly reduce pain, lower blood pressure, decrease anxiety, and help ease depression in people with a range of health problems; however, it is not readily used in the hospital setting. Research involving the Human‑Animal Bond (HAB) is well established, yet most social workers receive no special training or coursework about this topic as it applies to working with patients or consumers. This study sought to understand the beliefs about AAI among medical social workers in healthcare settings in order to gauge what knowledge and degree of exposure they may have had to AAI. Eighteen randomly selected social workers, holding MSW, ASW, LMSW or LCSW credentials, employed from 6 months to 26 years in hospital or cancer clinic settings across the United States were interviewed by phone, recorded, and their comments transcribed. Nine specific themes were identified. Fifteen of the 18 medical social workers had no formal training, workshop or class discussion during undergraduate or graduate school training. No one had any on the job training, unless they purposefully sought it out, as three did. All participants agreed that they would like to know more about AAI to incorporate into their workplace in order to better inform patients, doctors, nurses and staff about the benefits of animals as a natural healing modality.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Susan Michalczyk
Bono, the lead singer of U2, has built a reputation as a champion of political issues, such as publicly taking a pacifist stance against the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and as a prominent social activist, especially known for working with Amnesty International. However, Bono’s lobbying to save the continent of Africa from its economic downward spiral bridged social justice with politics. Bono headed the American branch of the Drop the Debt/Jubilee 2000 campaign, co-founded his own non-profit group DATA, and is responsible for the success of the ONE campaign in the United States. As a celebrity, Bono uses his connections to influence his fanbase using U2 lyrics and performances. He also politicks with government officials and impresses them with his expert knowledge, tuning his argument to suit his audience. These tactics, combined with ceaseless passion and a grassroots movement, have made Bono the most effective social and political activist of the 21st century. Bono inspires others to take up a crusade and defend it using all of their power. If the rest of humanity were to follow his example, social justice would be a realized necessity in this new millennium

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the relationship between job satisfaction and union membership of long day care employees in Melbourne and Sydney, and uses the exit-voice/union-voice model as an analytical framework. The data includes surveys of child-care staff and students enrolled in child-care courses, interviews with child-care staff, union officials and employer representatives, and official documentation. While child-care workers report high levels of job satisfaction, it is argued that the considerable ‘exit voice’ of the survey respondents is a demonstration of job dissatisfaction. The reported levels of satisfaction are a manifestation of satisfaction with the intrinsic features of the work (child development outcomes) and the limited employment opportunities of females generally. The exit voice is a manifestation of dissatisfaction with the extrinsic features of the job (pay and career advancement). The thesis failed to detect evidence of a strong relationship between job (dis)satisfaction and union membership, due to the ‘caring profession syndrome’, a perceived lack of union instrumentality, and problems associated with the ability of unions to recruit and organise an industry consisting of over 4,000 small workplaces. The findings show that both staff and students are highly sympathetic towards unions, that working in child-care changes attitudes about work but not unions, and that there exists a strong union voice among child-care workers despite the relative low levels of union membership. The thesis discusses the implications for union organisation so that the supply of union membership might correspond with the demands for this membership, particularly in regard to employee motivations and commitments.

Full text
Abstract:
The premise for this research initially stemmed from a perceived crisis facing the provision of the nuclear medicine service within the United Kingdom, the possible impact posed by the shortage of nuclear medicine clinicians and the untapped potential of a body of non-medical healthcare practitioners working within the nuclear medicine sector to whom recognised additional roles, such as reporting of images, may sensibly be delegated. Yet, despite the support by various professional bodies and colleges, uptake is not widespread and appears to be ill provided for in terms of educational programmes. From an educational perspective, with ever advancing technology and the ubiquity of web based resources, eLearning within healthcare is still in its infancy. Certainly its ability and flexibility to reach geographically diverse populations of learners, is undisputed, yet whilst advantageous to the professional leaner in accessing material away from a restricted campus based environment, its efficacy to teach a skill, or competence, and indeed to translate this to clinical practice remains largely unproven. With both these issue in mind, the project question was posed as to whether it was possible to establish the efficacy and credibility of an eLearning resource to prepare and support the training of non-medical healthcare practitioners working within the field of nuclear medicine in reporting of bone scans.

Thompson, Anne. "The Benefits of Animal-Assisted Interventions: Perceptions of Social Workers Working with Veterans." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/901.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence-based practices utilized by social workers working with veterans experiencing physical (e.g., spinal cord injuries and loss of limbs) and/or mental health (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, substance use) issues are widely used with this vulnerable population. The number of social workers integrating animal-assisted interventions (AAI) or animal-assisted therapy (AAT) as a complementary intervention to these practices is extremely limited. A significant amount of research has been published on AAI and AAT, yet there is a gap in research regarding AAI and AAT as effective complementary approaches when working with veterans. The qualitative method utilized in this study was interviews in which MSWs and LCSWs were asked to share personal experiences while employed at veteran-supported agencies and/or non-profit organizations. The qualitative method of interviews and content analysis were used to help identify the themes and sub-themes of this study. The themes and sub-themes supported the phrases and statements drawn from the seven interviews conducted for this study. Findings supported in this study addressed the value of the human-animal bond, how integrating AAI and AAT with evidence-based practices can assist the veteran in improving quality of life (e.g., a decrease in social isolation, increase in social activity, decrease in substance use), and how important it is to recognize the need to provide the education in this field to social workers. Findings from this study can help to provide the foundation for future research, can underscore the value of offering and integrating AAI and AAT education into more MSW programs, and can contribute to establishing policy where those who can benefit by AAI and AAT are given access to it.

Gill, Michael John. "Identity driven institutional work : examining the emergence and effect of a pro bono organization within the English legal profession." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:44facd4f-c5a0-4735-90cd-bc9d86f4d0f1.

Full text
Abstract:
Although a growing number of scholars suggest that the construction of identity is an important form of institutional work, the complex interactions between identities and institutions remain under-explored. In particular, few studies consider how the affective aspects of identities may inform institutional work. This thesis examines the experiences of lawyers who volunteered to create and support a legal charity. As these volunteers grew to more than twenty thousand over fifteen years, the charity gradually centralized charitable work across law firms for the first time. In this way, it transformed the institution of pro bono work within the English legal profession. Drawing on this case study, this thesis employs a grounded theory methodology to generate a conceptual framework that connects emotion work, identity work and institutional work. This framework suggests that some professionals work to re-assert and ‘remember’ aspects of their traditional identities that compete with some contemporary demands. This can prompt identity contradictions that inspire reflection on professional practices. This identity work may also encourage professionals to evoke emotions of guilt that can imbue contradictions with enough significance to create a purpose for remedial institutional work. When enabled by meso-level processes, such micro-level work can reinvigorate traditional practices and accomplish institutional change.

Abstract:
Over the past few years’ competition between Swedish and international companies have increased. This puts requirements on how Swedish companies must act to survive. To handle these external changes, continuous work with internal efficiency is a solution for competitive advantage. The studied company Bong in Kristianstad has recently had problems concerning measurements of their internal efficiency, more precisely their production efficiency. A company that does not measure their production efficiency will have a hard time prioritizing the right areas, processes, activities, and solutions for improvement work. The purpose of this study is to identify relevant parameters with the intention of calculating and visualizing production efficiency within a manufacturing industry. The goal of the study is to develop a model for calculation and visualization of production efficiency that can be used as a basis for improvement work. The goal is also to be able to use this model in the purpose of identifying different areas that can be improved and to create suggestions for improvement for these areas. Knowledge was obtained by doing a qualitative case study concerning the company's work methods and their own interpretation of production efficiency. Parameters were identified, a model was created, calculations were done, and the results were analyzed to be able to visualize and determine the company's actual production efficiency based on the OEE/TAK-method. The analysis and conclusion showed that the studied company’s method for calculating their production efficiency was inadequate and non-representative. It was also proved why the current method was inadequate. Areas for improvement were identified where setup times constituted the biggest loss for the company's production efficiency. Three suggestions for improvement work were generated and implemented theoretically to prove what positive economic and psychosocial effects they have on the business.

This thesis discusses the financial, commercial, political and legal risks of international trade operations involving International Bank Guarantees. It starts by defining the most usual international trade instruments and, then, defining Standby Letters of Credit, Performance Bonds and Bid Bonds issued according to the ISP 98, URGD 758 or UCP 600 as International Bank Guarantees. Later, it explores each specific risk. The financial risks are divided into foreign exchange risk, applicant's default risk and bank reputation risk. It is considered as a commercial risks frauds and low quality products. Legal risks are legal battles and local legislation. There is a topic that discusses specifically the U.S. related risks, as the country has a very particular legislation when it comes to International Bank Guarantees. The political risks are related to commercial embargoes and sanctions, changes in foreign policy and to the deterioration of commercial reations. The following section discusses how to mitigate each of the risks discussed. It shows whether or not this risk can be mitigated and if it also affects internation trade operations that do not use International Bank Guarantees. Lastly, the thesis discusses about the ideal international trade instrument. At the moment, International Bank Guarantees are the best instrument, still not the perfect one as it has some limitations.

Collins, James P. "Prebiotic Synthesis of Pyrimidine Nucleosides." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/14095.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem of forming a glycosidic bond between ribose and the free nucleoside bases to produce beta-nucleosides under plausible prebiotic conditions is commonly referred to in origin of life research as The Nucleoside Problem. The lack of a general solution to this problem currently represents one of the largest stumbling blocks to the RNA world hypothesis and many other theories regarding the origin of life. Over thirty years ago the purine nucleosides were successfully synthesized by drying the fully-formed bases and ribose together in the presence of divalent metal ion salts. However, glycosidic bond formation by the pyrimidine bases has never been achieved under similar reaction conditions. This thesis describes the first plausible prebiotic synthesis of a pyrimidine nucleoside, demonstrated with the pyrimidine base analogue 2-pyrimidinone. Information provided by nucleoside-formation reaction involving 2-pyrimidinone and related pyrimidine bases should provide valuable insights into the possible mechanism by which glycosidic bond formation was accomplished on the prebiotic Earth.

Robertson, Lynsey E. "An analysis of the correspondence and hagiographical works of Philip of Harvengt." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/526.

Full text
Abstract:
For every famous author of the twelfth-century renaissance, there are numerous lesser-known writers. Despite being overshadowed by more brilliant scholars or those closer to the centre of important events, their voices add depth to the study of the intellectual history of this period. A founding member of one of the earliest Premonstratensian houses; a highly-educated and prolific author, much in demand as a hagiographer; and a vigorous defender of the clerical order, Philip of Harvengt is one such writer, and a worthy subject for study. This thesis examines two bodies of Philip’s works – his letters and his hagiographical writings – analysing the predominant and recurrent concerns and ideals expressed in them, and the means by which they are expressed. The letters are carefully crafted works, examples of the literary labour which Philip writes is incumbent upon the cleric. The first part of this thesis approaches these letters in chapters on four themes: the role of the ecclesiastical prelate; the importance of learning; the relationship between religious orders; and Philip’s use of the motif of friendship. His hagiographical works, too, are examples of literary artistry, to move as well as to educate the audience. In the second part of the thesis, these will be discussed individually, with the first chapter analysing his vita of Oda, a nun attached to his own house, whom he portrays as a martyr. The succeeding chapters consider Philip’s rewritings of earlier vitae, and show how he managed his sources in order to produce vitae depicting their subjects according to his ideal model of sanctity. Philip’s letters express concerns shared by contemporaries, reflecting anxieties surrounding roles and ideal forms of living in a period immediately following the first fervour of religious renewal. His hagiographies articulate ideals of sanctity, clarifying these when they are not made sufficiently explicit in earlier works, for the better edification of an audience pursuing this vita perfecta. Both letters and hagiographies are designed to exhort and instruct the reader or listener: above all, Philip is a teacher.

Abstract:

There are several possibilities for those with an eating disorder, who wishes to get treatment and recover to get help and support. But for those who are not ready to recover, there are not any help to receive. Pro-ana is a youth culture where individuals who want to achieve the anorectic ideal help and support each other. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyse the content and the need for the Pro-ana community on Internet, among young people with eating disorders. More specifically the aim was to find out how young Swedish people uses the Pro-ana communities on Internet. The study was an ethnography based on concealed observations of 6 different Pro-ana websites on Internet. During the observations five themes has been used: anonymity, thinspiration, life choice or disease, help or no help and identity. The analysis was based on Goffmans (2004) The presentation of self in everyday life, and the authors thesis about how humans represents them self in the accompany of others. Pro-ana websites consists of diary notes about weight, food, exercise and how to cope with an eating disorder. The Pro-ana culture online has become kind of a support group to which young people turn when society has no knowledge and no resources to meet them and social work are very limited on these sites. When not dare to tell friends and family about their situation, they turn to Pro-ana, which has been described as a sanctuary away from society’s judgements.

The goal on this dissertation performs both a description and an analysis on human and nonhuman relation based on Floresta's countryside, a town located in Pernambuco State. I have described this relation from some different point of view, yet their particular way of breeding (criação na solta) has been the main focus on my analysis. The intensive field research gave rise to the sketching of interspecies relations in that area. It had occurred in the period of three months when took place conversations and interviews with local husbandman who breeds both in the countryside (no mato) and the streets (na rua). In particular, the issue draws upon a description about how five families from the riparian zone (Cachoeira, Pocinhos, Quebra-Unha, Capim e Riacho do Meio) deal with and understand their relations with goats. At first, my analysis looks forward to the contrast between laboro as a husbandman daily activity and both the concept of work and and the extensive production method. The laboro is a set of very specific procedure and skill – a part of what is called criação na solta – and they are a condition of possibility for what I intend to describe and understand. Signs belong to the set of skills: they are a knife cutting made at the goat's ear which concurrently symbolize and identify the animal's owner and its family. The laboro and the signs are ways of realization and accomplishment of family affiliation. The laboro relies upon the animal's intense acquaintance with the caatinga which brings together a particular husbandry expertise; just a few men knows the terrain and how to breed goats. The concept of domestication can be drawn from the nexus relating breeder, livestock and caatinga in the manner of their mutual relation. Hence, from the standpoint of breeders and their families I describe how this practical way of breeding give rise to an understanding on interspecies relation in a given region. Those who knows the veredas, the goat-tracks traced as daily over the years, knows as well the ground pattern and footprint which deliver a way of being which is proper to husbandman, caatinga and the goat.
