The problem of the content and nature of the use of a worker's free time is of scientific and practical interest in the unity and struggle of opposites both with working time, existing in capitalist society outside the real “temporal freedom” of a person of labor, and with leisure time, included in the structure of free time. The actualization of these problems is determined by the increasing importance of creative work, which contributes to the formation of a new society of professionals - potentially “another subject of the production process”, characterized not by im

The aims of this paper are to construct a theoretical model treating sleep as an investment in health capital and analyze how sleep affects a worker's health capital and social welfare. We consider time constraints because sleep only requires time, and we assumed that consumption also requires time. By doing so, we reveal how workers decide their hours slept. Of particular importance is the result that workers store their health capital by sleeping more than the optimal value at a young age, which leads to increased output. Moreover, we identify a complementary relationship between consumption

Determining the productivity of individual workers engaged in team production is difficult. Monitoring expenses may be high, or the observable output of the entire team may be some single product. One way to collect information about individual productivity is to observe how total output changes when the composition of the team changes. While some employers may explicitly shift workers from team to team for exactly this reason, the most common reasons for changes in team composition are at least partly voluntary: vacation time and sick days. Abstract:
This paper presents methods for improving the attention span of workers in tasks that heavily rely on their attention to the occurrence of rare events. The underlying idea in our approach is to dynamically augment the task with some dummy (artificial) events at different times throughout the task, rewarding the worker upon identifying and reporting them. The proposed approach is an alternative to the traditional approach of exclusively relying on rewarding the worker for successfully identifying the event of interest itself. We propose three methods for timing the dummy events throughout the t

Abstract Every day, more than a billion workers are out on their own for part or all of their workday, with no colleagues to turn to in an emergency or collaborate on a task. This paper takes a detailed look into a new lone worker solution that ensures that lone workers are protected and get their job done easier. The new lone worker solution offers a suite of services that transform the lone worker to a connected worker. Key among these services include: AV communication: The lone worker solution provides workers with full audio and visual communications capabilities allowing them to always s

Model workers have made outstanding contributions to the construction of socialist modernization. In the new era, vigorously carrying forward the spirit of model workers is conducive to creating a social atmosphere in which everyone advocates labor and strives for excellence, thus enabling people to work together to achieve the goal of the second century. The spirit of model workers has an important connotation of the times, but with the continuous promotion of the socialist market economy, there are prominent problems in the process of carrying forward the spirit of model workers, such as ins

Abstract:
Over the last two decades Mexico has had an open trade regime, experienced macroeconomic stability, and made substantial progress in education. However, average workers¿ earnings have stagnated and earnings for workers with more schooling have declined, compressing the earnings distribution and lowering the returns to education. This paper hypothesizes that these developments are explained by large and persistent of distortions that misallocate resources towards less productive firms, since these firms are substantially less intensive in educated workers than more productive ones. Abstract:
In an attempt to control the flow of undocumented immigrants, successive US governments have considered everything from large scale deportation, amnesties, expanding visa programs, to fining firms who hire illegal workers. Using a comparative static model, Aguiar and Walmsley (2013), find that amnesties have a positive impact on the US economy. However such policies are one-time changes in the labor force, whose benefits diminish over time, and which are unlikely to stem the flow of undocumented workers or fulfill the demands of U.S. firms for cheap foreign labor. Abstract:
In 2014, Colombia implemented a policy that added flexibilization to labor contracts for part-time workers that reduced the quasi-fixed costs of employing formal workers. We find that the reform increased the probability of entering the formal sector within the targeted population: low-wage, part-time workers. We use administrative employer-employee matched data and leverage variation across cities and industries in demand for part-time work before the reform. We find that, after the tax reform, the change in the total number of formal workers is 6 percentage points higher at firms that use th

Abstract:
Between 2004 and 2018, the spread of wages in Mexico's private labor sector remained stable. Nonetheless, the underlying factors behind salary dispersion underwent significant shifts. To uncover these changes, we analyze an employer-employee dataset comprising the near-universe of Mexico's formal employment. We estimate log wage models and decompose earnings dispersions into worker, workplace and sorting components. At the national level, we find that sorting increased its importance over time. While worker-level factors were the main contributors to salary variability in the 2004-2008 period,

We evaluate the aggregate and distributional effects of climate change mitigation policies using a multi-sector equilibrium model with intersectoral input-output linkages and worker heterogeneity calibrated to different countries. The introduction of carbon taxes leads to changes in relative prices and inputs reallocation, including labor. For the United States, reaching its original Paris Agreement pledge would imply at most a 0.8% drop in output. This impact is distributed asymmetrically across sectors and individuals. Abstract:
I build a tractable random search model with firm dynamics, on-the-job search, and aggregate shocks. Multi-worker firms make recruitment decisions, choose whether to enter or exit the market, and design wage contracts. Tractability is obtained by showing that, under a set of assumptions on the recruitment technology, the decisions of workers and firms can be expressed in terms of the firms’ current productivity. I introduce a numerical solution method to accommodate aggregate shocks in this environment and show that the model can replicate salient features of both firm-level data on productivi

The COVID-19 pandemic affected everyone in the United States, and essential workers across industries like health care, agriculture, retail, transportation and food supply were key to our survival. Immigrants, overrepresented in essential industries but largely invisible in the public eye, were critical to our ability to weather the pandemic and recover from it. But who are they? How did they do the riskiest of jobs in the riskiest of times? And how were both U.S.-born and foreign-born residents affected? This report explores the crucial contributions of immigrant essential workers, their impa
