This article studies how prior professional connections among founding employees predict a new firm’s short- and medium-term success. The authors apply three employment network measures to a large employer–employee matched Brazilian panel data set to find that network structures are strongly predictive of both firm survival and growth. All else equal, new firms with previously connected founding employees experience higher survival odds but slower early growth. Results suggest that working with former co-workers confers benefits such as resolved informational asymmetries, increased resource sh

Total quality management has been a central element in many efforts directed towards organizational change. Theories tend to fall into two extreme camps, which hold either that TQM transforms attitudes and behaviour or that it is nothing but a means to intensify work and tighten managerial control. More recent analysis is more balanced, but lacks quantitative data on employee responses and also neglects the varying contexts in which TQM exists. This study addresses these issues by taking six named organizations from different sectors of the UK economy and by blending qualitative interviewing w

Purpose – Attitude is a major factor affecting behavior. It influences the perception of objects and people, exposure to and comprehension of information, choice of friends, co-workers and so on. Attitudes are subjective attributes of people. Attitude is nothing but conceptualization of human qualities that are formed on the basis of either rational consideration or statistical evidence. Thus, people may vary along each of a number of attitudinal dimensions. Keeping this measurement aspect into consideration, the attitudes might be defined operationally by describing the measurement systems th

Abstract Introduction Health behaviour changes made during the pre-operative period can positively impact on post-operative outcomes and the success of bariatric surgery.(1) Digital technologies present an opportunity to support patients with this. Currently, little is known about the optimal design or delivery of digital technologies for this patient cohort. In order to develop useful and effective digital strategies for this unique patient cohort, it is important to first understand how bariatric surgery patients want to be supported.(2) Aim To understand how digital technologies could be de

The isolation of embryonic stem cells (ESC) and embryonic germ cells (EGC) from early embryos is a major milestone in modern science and holds a great potential for human medicine. In 2007, Shinia Yamanaka and co-workers reprogrammed somatic cells to pluripotency by induced expression of pluripotency transcription factors. These so-called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) are equivalent to ESC in terms of pluripotency and have the same potential for use in regenerative therapies. However, before the use of pluripotent cells or their derivatives in humans, potential therapies need to be tes

They are one of the key tourist attractions for regional towns and expected to generate much needed tourism revenue. In 2017 in New South Wales alone, there were three million visitors to regional galleries and museums (MGNSW 13). However, apart from those (partially) funded by local councils, they are often run on donations, good will, and the enthusiasm of volunteers. According to Oscar Wilde, the problem with socialism was that it took up too many evenings. Wilde’s aphorism alludes to a major issue that bedevils all attempts to influence the public sphere: the fact that public activities encroach unduly on citizens’ valuable time. In the 21st century, the dilemma of how to deal with “too many evenings” is one that many citizen journalists face as they give their own time to public pursuits. This paper will look at the development of the public citizen and what it means to be a citizen journalist with reference to some of the writer’s o
