Full textRED Digital Cinema is a rather new company that has developed a camera that has shaken the world of the film industry, the RED One camera. RED One is a digital cinema camera with the characteristics of a 35mm film camera. With a custom made 12 megapixel CMOS sensor it offers images with a filmic look that cannot be achieved with many other digital cinema cameras.
With a new camera comes a new set of media files to work with, which brings new software applications supporting them. RED Digital Cinema has developed several applications of their own, but there are also a few other software supporting RED. However, as of today the way of working with the RED media files together with these software applications are yet in progress.
During the short amount of time that RED One has existed, many questions has risen about what workflow is the best to use. This thesis presents a theoretical background of the RED camera and some software applications supporting RED media files. The main objective is to analyze RED material as well as existing workflows and find the optimal option.

In Virginia Tech's Digital Library Research Laboratory, we support subject-matter-experts (SMEs) in their pursuit of research goals. This includes everything from data collection to analysis to reporting. Their research commonly involves an analysis of an extensive collection of data such as tweets or web pages. Without support -- such as by our lab, developers, or data analysts/scientists -- they would undertake the data analysis themselves, using available analytical tools, frameworks, and languages. Then, to extract and produce the information needed to achieve their goals, the researchers/users would need to know what sequences of functions or algorithms to run using such tools, after considering all of their extensive functionality. Further, as more algorithms are being discovered and datasets are getting larger, the information processing effort is getting more and more complicated. Our research aims to address these problems directly by attempting to lower the barriers, through a methodology that integrates the full life cycle, including the activities carried out by User eXperience (UX), analysis, development, and implementation experts. We devise a three part approach to this research. The first two parts concern building a system that supports discovery of both information and supporting services. First, we describe the methodology that introduces UX research into the process of workflow design. Second, we identify and describe key components of the infrastructure implementation. We demonstrate both parts of the approach, describing how we teach and apply the methodology, with three case studies. In the third part of this research, we extend formalisms used in describing digital libraries to encompass the components that make up our new type of extensible information system.

The widespread adoption of digital medical images in various types of health institutions, has raised new problems regarding data and processes management. The standardisation of these scenarios has been subject of attention in the last decades, resulting in the development and promotion of standards such as DICOM and HL7. Currently, there are two kinds of information systems in medical imaging laboratories, that must operate in a collaborative manner, RIS which is responsible for managing the administrative tasks and PACS that manage images and associated information. This dissertation aimed to design and implement an RIS solution based on tools with no use restriction or open source. We begin by studying in detail the state of the art, including the open source and proprietary solutions, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each one. In addition to analysing the technologies used in the development of each solution, this study provided decisive contributions, regarding the project requirements. In particular, it allowed us to identify innovative features with high value to users. The achieved solution is an information system capable of managing all operations in a radiology department, including administrative management of patients, exam scheduling, conducting clinical reports, among others. Regarding innovative features, the reporting module stands out, since it allows to upload new report templates into the system and export these clinical reports in the DICOM-SR standard, thus allowing their integration with the images in a PACS repository. Regarding the technologies aspect, it was developed a multi-platform web application that follows a modular service-oriented architecture and also provides an abstraction in regard to the data persistence layer.

Modern systems for computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) have a history dating back to drafting boards, early computers, and machine shops with specialized technicians for each stage in a manufacturing workflow. In recent years, personal-scale digital fabrication has challenged many of these workflows' build-in assumptions. A single individual may control the entire workflow, from design to manufacture; they will be using computers that are exponentially more powerful than those in the 1970s; and they may be using a wide variety of tools, machines, and processes. The variety of tools and machines leads to a combinatorial explosion of possible workflows. In addition, tools are based on boundary representations, which are fragile and can easily describe nonsensical objects. This thesis addresses these issues with a set of tools for end-to-end digital fabrication based on volumetric solid models. Workflows are modular, making it easy to add new machines, and a shared core of path-planning operations reduces system complexity. Replacing boundary representations with volumetric representations guarantees that models represent reasonable real-world solids. Adaptively sampled distance fields are used as a generic interchange format. Functional representations are used as a design representation, and we examine scaling behavior and efficient rendering. We present interactive design tools that use these representations as their geometry engine. Data from CT scans is also used to populate these distance fields, showing significant benefits in file size and resolution compared to meshes. Finally, these representations are used as inputs to a modular multimachine CAM workflow. Toolpath generation is implemented, characterized, and tested on a complex solid model. We conclude with a summary of results and recommendations for future research directions.

Full textBackground: Since Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays in 1896, radiology has undergone great changes. In Sweden, the process of digitalisation radiology was initiated in the mid 1990s. Aim: To describe the organisational changes that took place in five radiol- ogy clinics in Sweden in connection with the digitalisation of radiology. Study questions: How did the number and type of radiological examinations change when comparing two years before with two, four and six years after digitalisation? How did the number and distribution of hours worked change among different staff categories when comparing two years before with two, four and six years after digitalisation? How did the duties change after digitalisation within and between different staff categories at the radiology clinics? How do staff members in key positions describe the implementa- tion of digitalisation and any changes in their professional prac- tice after digitalisation? Method: Quantitative and qualitative methods were combined in order to answer the study questions. Five Swedish radiology clinics took part in the study, and production outcome data were gathered from each clinic. A total of 22 individuals were interviewed, with three to six interviews per radiology clinic. In order to gain an understanding of the positive results at one of the radiology clinics in terms of the increased number of exami- nations and reduction in the number of hours worked after digitalization a case study was conducted at this clinic, in which two questions were posed: How was the digitalisation carried out? How were workflow, im- plementation and changes followed up in detail after digitalisation? Ele- ments of Bramson and Bramson ́s (2005) perspectives and Kotter and Cohen’s (2002) success factors were applied. Findings: All radiology clinics had a small increase in the number of radio- logical examinations, while computed tomography and magnetic reso- nance imaging examinations increased significantly during the period un- der investigation. Thus, more complex examinations were carried out post digitalisation, a fact considered to have led to qualitatively better and safer diagnoses. The total working time was reduced at three clinics, while two exhibited an increase. The total number of hours worked increased for radiologists and radiographers but decreased for secretaries and assistant nurses. In general, radiologists and radiographers performed more tasks post digitalisation, and many of the traditional duties of secretaries and assistant nurses were eliminated or taken over by the computer. Digitalisa- tion enabled greater access to radiological images and patient data in addi- tion to improved quality and diagnostics of the radiological examination. Digitalisation also allowed a better-controlled workflow, as well as im- proving ergonomics, the environment and the coordination with other clinics. The case study interviews revealed themes describing: information, super users, education, clear work flows and routines, staff needs and motiva- tion as well as clear leadership throughout the change process. According to Bramson and Kotter, these themes are important for successful change. Conclusion: None of the individuals interviewed wished to return to the analogue mode of working. The digitalisation led to great changes for the different staff categories, with the advantages outweighing the disad- vantages. To succeed with change, Bramson’s perspectives and Kotter’s success factors should be taken into consideration.

Due to the environmental friendly trends and creative marketing, creative paper products’ value has increased gradually. In the carton design, packaging design software can be applied to achieve an accurate die cut and furthermore an on demand carton design can be achieved. In accordance with people likes creativity, special shape, self-expression, and a small amount of diverse market demands. But the equipment of packaging design is expensive, materials are diversified and CAD software is not common. The whole design process operation has a certain degree of threshold. Designers need to have cetain degree understanding of the material, structure, and software operating that could be able to develop the correct products. This study was aimed to analyze learning packaged software efficiency, simplifying methods of operation, and easier to promote. The results showed that: (A) Beginners are not familiar with features i.e. box-type library of packaging design software, therefore can not achieve the full efficiency of the software. Senior users and mediacor users are more familiar with the operation of the software, and can improve the work efficiency via the software. (B) Due to frequent users often use the output software package, there is not difficulty for them to re-operate even after a period of time. (C) Regrading to the shortcut keys and interface design of the software, it is recommended to refer to commonly used software to improve user efficiency and reduce the burden of learning. Hopefully, the results of this study can be referred by relevant industries or companies.

The offset printing industry is a traditional industry with specialized skills. It is an important issue for the development of printing industry to digitalize printing process and improve productivity efficiency through new concept and computer technology. Also, cost down, enhancing the printing quality and shortening the lead time become the challenge in the field of offset printing industry. The proposed “digitalized working flow” mainly applies the frameworks of CIP3 & CIP4 to integrate “Prepress”, “Press” and “Post press” as one unified system, which makes the whole process running smoothly. Based on the same file format, the production order, codes, conditions, specifics, instructions of the forefront can be transmitted without any lost. The system proposed in this thesis, reduces 58% of operation time in preparation and 68% of paper usage for a set of printing. The result proves that the system achieves the expected goal of “shorten the lead time” “cost down” & “efficient productivity” for the most competitive and maximum benefit.

How to determine proper settings for image acquisition and image reproduction workflow for objects with different color and surface glossiness is a long-term problem for photographers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of various settings such as aperture and tone curves to the image quality of RAW image files using high-end imaging devices. The study tries to answer six questions including: 1. The impact of aerpture and sharpness setting on image sharpness, 2. The color accuracy of different ICC profiles, 3. The color fidelity of wide-gamut LCD monitor, 4. The relationship of visual image quality to different exposures and tone curve settings, 5. The cross-media color accuracy of high-end inkjet printer, and 6. The relationship of visual image quality to the tone curves setting for the printer. The results showed that there is no agreement in terms of optimal aperture for different lenses. A lens wih longer focal length need less sharpness enhancement. Using wrong ICC profiles for digial camera would result in huge color errors. Reproduction mode is recommended to generate the cameras profile. The color of commercial wide-gamut LCD is predictable after careful calibration but it still has some differences to its advertised color standard. Observers were more sensitive to exposure level comparing with different tone curves while displays the images. Printer colors can be characterized successfully using high-end color management software. However, the color errors are increased significantly for cross-media reproduction. Main errors were caused by camera side. To photo an object with different color and surface glossiness, a minor adjustment of tone curve for printer is required to improve the visual image quality of the reproduction. The study finally proposed a workflow for raw image processing to make better reproduction using high-end imaging devices. It would be a good reference for photographers.

Full textWith the introduction of CAD/CAM in dentistry in recent years, various forms of digital workflow have been developed. This technology is widely known in the field of indirect restorations and, today, its advantages are mostly appreciated in planning of aesthetic rehabilitations. This narrative review aims to analyze the advantages of digital workflow, with particular regard to the planning of aesthetic rehabilitations, and its clinical applicability both in direct and indirect restorations. A bibliographic search was conducted in PubMed/Medline and Google Scholar databases. With digital workflow aesthetic rehabilitations are particularly advantageous in cliniciantechnician communication, due to the greater number of information that can be transmitted compared to cases managed with traditional workflow. Therefore, the use of digital workflow is constantly developing, given the countless possibilities it offers.

The abundant documents, records, and the historical relics preserved in the institutes or organizations of religious studies contain religious doctrines and their core values. Those treasures can be endowed with new lives through the establishment of digital archives. A digital archives system, generally speaking, involves human resources, budgets, and digital technology. Its success lies in a well-developed operating procedures, and complete implementation. This paper aims to, firstly, investigate the digitization process that has taken place in I.K.T Chong-De School and, secondly, develop document digitization procedure for I.K.T Chong-De School, which has collected holy gospels from all over the world since 1945. Since these gospels are paper documents, our digitization plan follows ”the guidelines for digitizing paper documents” specified in Research and Development for Digital Archives and e-Learning Technologies Project. We also borrow experience and technology from Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts. Our objective is to develop paper document digitization procedure that is exclusively devised for I.K.T Chong-De School. This research adopts an action research approach with a view to developing digitization procedures for I.K.T Chong-De School. In the blueprint of the digitalization procedures specified in our action research, we include and generalize our interviews with Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts and literary reviews; we also analyze and assess the possibility of the development of our system. Based on the findings, we conduct the follow-up procedures of implementation, observation and reflection. Finally, we use SUS (System Usability Scale) to assess the functions of the digital archives. The most important guideline for digitization is to “preserve the original materials without damaging its originality.’ The major challenges are “how to preserve those fragile originals,” and how to prolong the lives of those materials. The result of this research indicates that digital archives equip I.K.T Chong-De School with a digital tool for academic research and endow those paper materials with new lives. These digitalized treasures stored in the cloud can be widely and effectively spread and used. The “digitalization procedures,” which we develop, are expected to be a model and a reference for those institutes or organizations of religious studies which plan to develop digital archives. In a collaborative workflow platform, when a group leader receives a document which requires cooperators'' support, she/he assigns the task to the cooperators. Each cooperator can modify the document in real-time and view the other cooperators’ modifications simultaneously. Though a collaborative platform makes a team work more efficiently, problems can occur. First, when the leader finds an error in the document, she/he cannot know who made the error. Second, when all cooperators have finished their modifications, the leader must verify the validity of all revisions stored on the collaborative platform. To solve these problems, we propose that a collaborative workflow platform is combined with a digital signature scheme: one signature per revision. Most studies about collaborative platforms consider access control mechanisms rather than signature schemes. In this thesis, we propose the implementation of a new trapdoor hash function: a bi-trapdoor hash function that requires two trapdoor keys when a collision is found. We combine a one-collision bi-trapdoor hash function with a digital signature scheme in order to create a secure and efficient collaborative platform. Our proposed scheme has three advantages: a low computation cost in the online phase; a rapid approach to finding the editor of a revision in a collaborative platform; and batch verification support for all revisions.

Full textIn modern dentistry, it is imperative to incorporate tools that can aid in diagnosis, improve communication between staff and patients, create predictable systems, and deliver treatment with precision and agility. To obtain a right diagnosis, it is important to use all devices to conduct our initial analysis of any case, as well as to serve as the primary guide for beginning planning. With adequate planning, it will be possible to predict results as well as to trace the steps of execution of the case. In that case, it is essential to use software that helps in its execution. The implementation of the treatment requires a reliable and precise protocol of execution capable of setting the planned objective into practice, being the use of the available technologies very important. The aim of the present study is to describe the digital workflow in Orthodontics, Implant Dentistry, Clinical Prosthesis, Orthognathic Surgery and Periodontics in order to assist the dental practitioner in the clinical day-to-day, where he or she may be able to create a digital protocol that the aid of the diagnosis to the final treatment of the patient.

Full textTreatment planning in fixed Prosthodontics is essential to optimize the final result. Initially done with conventional planning, recently digital planning tools have been integrated in this phase of rehabilitation treatment. A narrative literature review was done to compare conventional and virtual planning in the context of fixed Prosthodontics. A bibliographical search was done in PubMed/Medline, GoogleScholar and Quintessence Publishing. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established, considering only studies in which natural teeth were used between the years 2012 and 2021. It is not possible to assume an irrefutable conclusion due to the lack of studies that scientifically compare conventional versus virtual planning. However, there are advantages with virtual tools (or mixed, between conventional and digital). As such, this is an important area of research where more studies are needed for a better understanding of the scientific evidence.

Full textIntroduction: Dentistry is the area that deals with oral health care, the study of oral pathologies and its treatment. The elaboration of a correct diagnosis and realization of a precise procedure are the keys to cure the ethiology of pain, giving the patient the comfort of a functional oral cavity and the self-confidence linked to the aesthetic aspect, in which the smile has a fundamental role. This improve the patient’s psychophysical health, leading to a better quality of life. Clinical Activity: The aim of this work is to present a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the clinical activity realized during the last year of the Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Dentária, at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa Clinic. The data related referes to the acts as operator and assistant, the total number of visits for each disciplinary area, the types of treatments performed, as well as data related to the patients' habits and systemic diseases. Clinical Cases: In this section are presented four different clinical cases, including the description of the evaluation visit, diagnosis and the relative treatment plan. In fact, the first case deals with rehabilitation in the maxillary anterorior area, using a fixed prostesis cantilever type, to restore function and aesthetics. The second case describe the realization of an occlusal splint executed with digital workflow. The third case reports the extraction of a lower third molar using a flapless technique. The fourth and last case describes the direct restoration of non-carious lesions.

The invention of digital camera influences our everyday life and also has great impact on printing industries. From conventional color separation to computer to press, the series of innovations have already fulfilled the requirements of accuracy, speedy and inexpensive. However, how to integrate digital cameras successfully into our conventional prepress workflow is an important issue for industrial applications. Therefore, the present study investigated the impact of digital image capturing workflows on color image quality. The results from both questionnaires and experiments showed that the differences between conventional photo-scanning workflow and the scene-shooting workflow are significant. Actually, compared to the photo-scanning workflow, the resulted colors from the scene-shooting workflow were more realistic. However, no referenced image can be regarded as the “original” for printer/client communication. This problem results in many debates between the printers and the clients. To avoid the above problem, many printing companies ask their clients converting image colors by themselves. But other printing companies regard it as a great opportunity for them to gain new businesses by providing technical and interactive services.
