Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to examine the perceptions of nursing students working with staff nurses during their clinical experiences. Based on this information, a resource for staff nurses was developed to assist them in mentoring students. A limited review of the literature identified helpful and hindering practices in the education of nursing students. Nursing schools and faculty are charged with theoretical and clinical education of nursing students so they may enter into the nursing profession as competent and safe nurses. The series of studies presented in this thesis test an attribution-emotion behaviour model of helping versus violent retaliation (after Weiner, 1995) in professional groups at high risk of encountering violence in the workplace. Weiner's model predicts that staff who perceive violent incidents as within the control of the client will be more likely to experience anger and demonstrate a retaliatory response. Conversely, staff perceiving causes as uncontrollable by the client are more likely to feel sympathetic and exhibit helping behaviour. Emotional responses are seen to mediate between attrib

Abstract:
Coping strategies employed by unqualified direct-care staff working in both hospital and community units for clients with challenging behaviours were investigated in relation to experienced stress. Department for Education and Employment, 1994). These changes have been mirrored by changes in policy for children with special educational needs (SEN) and SENCOs now find themselves working in more complex environments with a plethora of demands. This thesis is set within this contemporary educational scene. The experiences of the SENCO are the focus of this study and the stories of these teachers have been portrayed through narrative
