Abstract:
The Ukrainians were politically active in emigration, but for a long time there existed only a well-branched chain of local organizations. They lacked organizational superstructure. In the end, the hierarchy of the Ukrainian diaspora’s organizations was built completely in 1967 with the institution – World Congress of Free Ukrainians. Though the idea of calling up a Congress originated among Ukrainian emigrants in the 1930s, it was realized only in 1967 by the PAUC. Despite the significant role the PAUC played in the process of Ukrainian diaspora consolidation, the institution was not the object of individual research in modern historiography. Dmytro Reshetchenko, Roman Kostyshyn, Ruslan Siromskyi, Andriy Yatsiv partly investigated a few sessions of the PAUC and its other activities. The function of the PAUC must be meticulously examined and clarified, as our study aims to analyze activity of PAUC in 1947–1967 and determine its contribution to the unification processes of the Ukrainian diaspora. The American Ukrainians established the PAUC in 1947 and delegated to it the task of holding the World Congress of Free Ukrainians. We may perceive that after unsuccessful attempts of organizing congress in 1930 the Ukrainians were persistent in bringing the idea to life. To the contrary, the ambition to hold the congress gained even more popularity and relevance after ІІ World War. The first obstacle the PAUC faced in the process of consolidation was the existence of several political centers which held opposite views. Every center wanted to dominate in political life and take its lead in establishing the superstructure. The reason why the activities of the PAUC were limited only to declamatory documents and manifesto іn 1947–1957 was the lack of unity and conflicts among political bodies. The colonel Andriy Melnyk emphasized the necessity of convening the All-Ukrainian congress and establishing a unifying organization for Ukrainian diaspora in his speech in 1957. He asked the Canadian Ukrainians to lead this process. They initiated the 4th session of PAUK, which again announced the World Congress of Free Ukrainians in autumn 1961. They established the Preparatory Committee, including two commissions – Organizational and Program to realize this declaration. The committee worked very intensively according to chairmen Organizational and Program commission reports, announced on the 4th session of the PAUC. Despite this, they were unable to fully perform their duties and organize the congress. The reasons were the same – the rivalry among political centers. On the Preparative Committee conference held in 1966 the date of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians was announced – November, 1967, which was dedicated to the anniversary of proclamation of the Ukrainian National Republic. They also reported about the preparatory state to congress. After that, on January 22, 1967 Manifesto on holding the World Congress of Free Ukrainians was declared. The preparations for the congress was the most hotly discussed topic in the Ukrainian newspapers. To sum up, the PAUC was acting during 1947–1967 with the aim to hold the World Congress of Free Ukrainians and establish the superstructure for the Ukrainian diaspora. Despite a lot of failures, the PAUC did not stop its activities and fulfilled its duty. The most prominent achievement of the PAUC was successful negotiations with the representatives of the leading organizations and the involvement into the work of congress, which gave the World Congress of Free Ukrainians an opportunity to represent all the Ukrainian nation. The World Congress of Free Ukrainians was a permanently active institution, defended rights Ukrainians, and cherished Ukrainian identity.

Abstract:
Summary. The history of the Ukrainian diaspora/emigrants makes up an integral part of the Ukrainian history. The article traces the path of foreign Ukrainians to unification in order to defend the interests of the entire Ukrainian people. The successful Jewish experience may serve as the vivid example. The latter lived scattered for ages, but united and established World Jewish Congress in 1936, being able to declare the State of Israel in 1948. The purpose of our study is to trace the origins of the idea to consolidate the Ukrainian emigrants and to establish the only coordinative institution for the whole Ukrainian nation from all over the world in the 1920s, its evolution and the practical measures for its implementation. The successful experience of the Ukrainian diaspora can serve as a model for the modern Ukrainians, while the analysis of the mistakes of the latter can help to avoid them at the contemporary stage of state formation. Methodology. The methods to solve the aforementioned problem are the following: 1) the method of historical comparison of the Ukrainian and Jewish experience of consolidation; 2) historiographical analysis and synthesis; 3) inductive and deductive reasoning. The scientific novelty of our research is in the comprehensive step-by-step study of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians. Conclusions. The powerful centers of the Ukrainian political emigration appeared in the 1920s. They aimed to restore Ukraine’s unity and independence. However, there was disagreement among them, given the fact that they struggled for power in 1917–1920. S. Petliura was one of the first competent political leaders, who realized the necessity of consolidation. His associates A. Shulgin and V. Prykhodko made the first attempts to organize the World Ukrainian Congress in the 1930s. The idea was supported in Galicia and in the USA, though it wasn’t implemented. The same process may be noticed in the Jewish diaspora at the same time; however, they summoned the World Jewish Congress in 1936 and declared their own state. Because the Ukrainian politician leaders failed to create a single political center, the Soviet diplomats became the legitimate representatives of Ukrainians during and after the World War II. The establishment of the Pan-American Ukrainian Conference (PAUC) in 1947 is thought to be the pre-condition for summoning the World Congress of Free Ukrainians, as it was one of its key tasks. A. Melnyk was one of the most active lobbyists of the Ukrainian unity. He also introduced the idea of the organization superstructure. PAUC made a few attempts to summon the congress in the 50s – 60s of the 20th century, but none of these were successful. Consequently, the Ukrainian emigrants were disappointed with its PAUC’s ability to accomplish the task successfully. Despite this fact, in January 1967 PAUC published/promulgated the manifesto on summoning the World Congress of Free Ukrainians launched the active propaganda campaign, and the long way of the Ukrainian nation to consolidation met with success in November.

Abstract:
The article refers to the World Congress of Free Ukrainians (WCFU), founded in New York in November 1967. The WCFU united 150 Ukrainian public, political and faith-based organizations. The elected Presidium of the Congress established special committees, which began to work on the coordination of Ukrainian organizations in the West regarding the provision of assistance to Ukrainian refugees and communities in the Americas, Western Europe and Australia, protection of human rights and of political prisoners of Ukrainian descent in the USSR, development of Ukrainian education and culture in the expatriate environment, etc. The WCFU opened its information office at the UN, which brought to the attention of diplomats from different countries the facts about the struggle of the Congress for an independent Ukraine, information about Ukrainian political prisoners, the russification process in Ukraine and Holodomor of 1932–1933. Owing to this effective influence, Canada, with its powerful and numerous Ukrainian community, was the first in the Western world to recognize the independence of Ukraine. In 1991, the WCFU organized a mass demonstration in front of the White House in Washington for the recognition of the young Ukrainian state. In December of the same year, the Congress, together with the Ukrainian World Foundation, announced the creation of the Ukrainian Reconstruction Fund. Since then, this organization has gradually become one of the consistent lobbyists of Ukraine’s national interests in the world. Having changed its name to the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), it is constantly engaged in the establishment of a positive international image of Ukraine, promotion of its rich historical heritage as well as compelling changes in its society. At the same time, in the circles of this international association there is a certain disappointment with the social and economic situation in Ukraine and lack of real results in the fight against corruption. However, the UWC seeks to contribute to the further development of the historical homeland. Today UWC has an extensive network of constituent organizations and maintains relations with Ukrainian communities in 61 countries. Abstract:
The article examines activities of the Ukrainian community in Washington in the 1950s and the 1960s. The relevant historical materials kept in the archives of Omelan and Tetiana Antonovych are submitted for scientific circulation for the first time. The papers relate to the activities of the Association of Ukrainians in Washington, headed by O. Antonovych, and of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, headed by L. Dobriansky, as well as to their cooperation with the US Congress in support of the Ukrainian cause. The Ruthenians (Ukrainians) were already mentioned in the Senate document of the 61st US Congress in 1911. After the Second World War, the Ukrainian question came up on the agenda in connection with the formation of the United Nations. The center of Ukrainian political emigration has moved to the US. At that time L. Dobriansky kept continuous contacts with members of the Congress. In 1959 both Houses of the Congress passed the Captive Nations Week Resolution submitted by L. Dobryansky. On June 7, 1960 the House of Representatives decided to issue the brochure known as “Europe’s Freedom Fighter. Taras Shevchenko. 1814–1861 as an official House document”. On June 27, 1964 President D. Eisenhower inaugurated the monument to Taras Shevchenko in Washington, DC. The US Congress celebrated the anniversary of the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence on January 22, 1918 on annual ceremonial meetings with prayers for free Ukraine delivered by the Ukrainian priests. The US Senators and Representatives regularly included statements and letters from the Ukrainian organizations in the Congress Records.

Abstract:
The lack of the scientific literature concerning Vasyl Vasyliovych Andriyevsky’s participation in the Ukrainian revolution in 1917-1921 in Chernihiv region is stated. His surname (as the leader of such immigrant organizations as Ukrainian Society Prosvita, Ukrainian Community, the Union of Ukrainian Organizations in Yogoslavia) is mentioned in solitary publications about the Ukrainian political immigration in the period between two world wars. The documents and materials of Vasyl Andriyevsky’s archiveinvestigation file used by the authors are kept in the Sectoral State Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine. They are representational and fill the gap in the issue concerning his participation in the revolutionary events in Chernihiv region in 1917-1921. The main directions of Vasyl Andriyevsky’s activities while holding the positions of the commissar in Borzna county and the instructor-organizer of the Ukrainian National Rada in Sosnytsia county are covered. The attention to Vasyl Andriyevsky’s participation in the Ukrainian province (Chernihiv) and county congresses (Borzna, Novgorod-Siversky, Sosnytsia), in relevant Ukrainian committees, in founding the detachments of “Ukrainian free Cossacks” is updated. His work in the institutions that ensured functioning of the Labour Congress in Kyiv is emphasized. Vasyl Andriyevsky’s achievements in the field of creative writing and journalism are characterized. The information concerning his publications on the pages of such periodical issues as “Ohni”, “Mayak”, “Muraveinik” (Kyiv) and “Chernihivska Zemska Hazeta” is mentioned. In the author’s opinion the studies of Vasyl Andriyevsky’s immigration period, participation in the immigrant unifying movement and literature efforts are promising.

Abstract:
The main aspects of the World Congress of Ukrainians’ activities aimed at the preservation the Ukrainian Diaspora’s national identity are revealed in the article. Due to the analysis of Ukrainian periodicals in the United States (“Svoboda”, “Mist”, “Chas i Podii”) the vigorous activity of the Ukrainian association in the presentation of Ukrainians among the international community has been identified. The World Congress of Ukrainians has been working efficiently to preserve the religious and cultural heritage, national identity, and it has been also making significant efforts for Ukraine’s entering the Western educational and political space as well. The materials of periodicals suggest a lot of information on the association’s activities in the protection of future generations from the assimilation; on a sustainable cooperation with the USA government officials in order to support Ukraine, defending the right of Ukrainians to establish the historical justice about Holodomor-Genocide, its statehood and unity. Attention is paid to the Congresses of organization, as Chief Executive and heads of committees’ reports show the diversity and importance of the activity of the World Congress of Ukrainians.

Abstract:
The article says that young people, starting with kindergarten, school, higher education institution, along with their mentor mentors, should deal with the issues of consolidation of Ukrainians. By the way, uniting Ukrainians, for whom the unresolved war with Russia is a big problem, there is a falsification of real facts in mass media, changing worldview, vital values and judgments is rather difficult. After the restoration of Ukraine's independence, the issue of the dissemination of truthful information about Ukraine and Ukrainians around the world became very relevant, which directly involves the Ukrainian Ukrainian Civic Congress (UCU), whose activities help to bring the full political, social, economic and other aspects to the Ukrainian and world community. the life of the Ukrainian diaspora and the Ukrainian state. I think that the most important thing in this issue is the formation of a national identity. I set myself before the goal to find out how the world can influence or help a person who does not realize which national group she belongs to. What does she know about her own historical territory, does she owns and uses the language of the state of Ukraine, which (its) citizen considers himself ... Not the formation of a national identity leads to a threat to the national security of the state - the layered society, the low level of culture and political culture (it prompts buckwheat), separatism intensifies, civil society is not seriously formed or in any way formed ... Returning to the main task of the UWC - the preservation of the national identity of Ukrainians, we must emphasize that this is the support and development of Ukrainian culture, the protection of the rights and interests of Ukrainians both in the diaspora and in Ukraine, the coordination of the international ties of their constituent organizations that support and develop Ukraine's national identity, spirituality, language, culture and heritage of Ukrainians around the world. The UWC assists in the development of public life of Ukrainians in the countries where they live, and also strengthens the positive attitude towards Ukrainians and the Ukrainian state and protects the rights of Ukrainians, regardless of their place of residence, in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. So the article is intended for educators in the first place. To sum up, it should be noted that the formation of a national identity is one of the main tasks of the Ukrainian state at the present stage. To implement it, it is necessary to actualize the efforts of educators of all levels and non-governmental organizations in the field of public and, above all, interethnic relations.

Abstract:
The article deals with the Shevchenkivskyi congress (other names – II Region congress, Great Memorable Shevchenkivskiy congress, Shevchenko's Jubilee congress, etc.), which took place in Lviv during June 27–29, 1914, on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Taras Shevchenko. The features of the organization and implementation of the congress, the contribution of the head of the Ukrainian gymnastic society «Sokol-Father» Ivan Boberskyi to this task were explored. The author draws attention to the fact that until 1914, Ukrainian «Sokol» and other Galicia companies did not carry out such large-scale events. It was cleared up the value of the congress in the development of national gymnastics and sports, which became the demonstration of a high-level national consciousness and dignity of the Ukrainians, a symbolic national association and a demonstration of political activity. Ivan Boberskyi did everything possible not only for the development of the Ukrainian community «Sokol» on the Ukrainian ethnic lands but also in the diaspora, the association with the Sich centers of Galicia, as well as for the consolidation of the Ukrainian nation. In the history of Galicia and in general the history of Ukraine, the Shevchenkivskiy congress, 1914 in Lviv remains one of the greatest cultural, social, political and sports events of the Galician Ukrainians in the XX century. After its successful conduction, Ivan Boberskyi in 1919 planned to hold the III Region Congress in Lviv. However, the events of World War I and the Ukrainian National Revolution of 1917–1923 prevented this. The prospects for further studies are to examine the course and results of the III Region congress, 1934, and the participation of the Ukrainian organizations in the All-Sokol congress in Prague during the interwar period. Abstract:
The article raises the issue of the importance of preserving and increasing the national cultural traditions of Ukrainians, without which one cannot hope for development in the civilization process, because based on cultural and spiritual priorities, a full-fledged sociocultural environment with values is forming. The article considers the essence of national culture as a sphere of spiritual and material possessions that influence the communicative organization of people with specific values and norms of behavior. The role of national culture as a potent factor in the deconfliction of Ukrainians in Ukraine and abroad is underlining. It is known that Ukrainian culture has been leveled for a long time, subjected to censorship bans and ideological pressure, especially during the Soviet period. Our culture has gone through a period of destruction, but now it is a time for national and cultural revival, opportunities for free choice and self-realization of the artist, time for renaissance and development of the ethnocultural heritage of Ukrainians, which is one of the priorities of national revival and preservation. The Ukrainian nation is modernizing, actively creating its cultural space despite the slowdown of the outdated administrative system, economic instability, hybrid warfare, and manifestations of military aggression by Russia. The article examines the peculiarities of the creation of the cultural space of Ukrainians in modern conditions, taking into account the challenges of the globalized world and the threats of the "Russian world". Thanks to the state support and implementation of humanitarian policy programs, the consolidation of Ukrainian societies, and the unification of citizens of Ukraine and Ukrainians in the world around national values and priorities. The core of the unity of Ukrainians is the national idea, the preservation of self-identity, patriotism, and the establishment of the ukrainian nation in the modern world. The emphasis is determined on the fact that national culture has a great potential in establishing Ukraine in the world cultural space and is a consolidating factor in the political unity of society, especially in the current conditions of hybrid warfare and the struggle of Ukrainians against Russian aggression.

Abstract:
This article examines the revival of the Ukrainian youth organization Plast in Germany in the first years after World War II. The reasons for this process have been studied. It was found that the establishing of Plast groups in di-pi camps was a spontaneous process, so Union of Ukrainian Plast Emigrants – SUPE was revived for the management of these activities and preventing of moral and physical degradation of Ukrainians. Number of meetings of the organization took place in 1946-1948 under its leadership. The most important were following: the Congress in Karlsfeld in April 1946, the meeting in Mittenwald in July 1947, and the First Ideological Plast Congress held in Ashschaffenburg in March 1948. The organizational and ideological background of Plast’ activities in the first postwar decades were adopted during these meetings. The article analyzes the ideas on the Educational Ideal of the Young Ukrainian and the principles of building further organization’ activities, in particular: apoliticalness, catholicity, acceptance of youth and senior Ukrainians without distinction of an origin and religion, using the ideas of world scouting and readiness to cooperate with other scout organizations, attention to the essence and spirit of the Plast idea and the development of propaganda among “ours”, and “of that which is not”. It was found that the 35th anniversary of the Plast establishment was celebrated in 1947–1948. However meetings of this period were dedicated not only to the summing up of the activities since its establishing. Given the fact that they took place on the eve of the mass resettlement of Ukrainians to other countries – the United States, Canada, Australia, etc., they aimed at developing the main directions of activities of the Plast members in emigration. The article explores the main achievements of the Congress held in 1948 under the slogan “On a further journey to the great purpose”. It is concluded that they were following: the election of the Main Plast Council headed by Plast Head (known as “Nachalniy Plastun”) Severin Levitsky, discussion of external and internal environment in the countries of new living and short-term prospects of this “journey”.

Abstract:
After Ukraine’s independence in 1991 Ukrainian children got wider access to the translations of the works of prominent world writers for children. The classic literature of the world, aiming to mediate the children’s feelings for beauty and literary aesthetic, became an integral part of the Ukrainian educational system. Thanks to the increase of famous children’s books written in modern Ukraine, Ukraine is now experiencing the growth of a new generation of more intelligent and capable citizens free from communism ideology, able to integrate and positively contribute to the modern multicultural world. However “children and war” is now again among the painful topics in modern Ukrainian society but not new in history and literature. There are no wars, initiated by Ukrainians. The Famine of Ukrainians in the East of Ukraine by Russians, the Second World War, physical genocide of Ukrainian families and their children for the whole century even also just for the Ukrainian language saved Pain and Distrust in the generation memory of Ukrainians. But the aim of this survey of the Ukrainian literature for children and youth is to show the developing processes in the society on the basics of the main ideas, topics, directions and values during the XX-XXI centuries, beginning since the end of the XIX century by such prominent writer like Ivan Franko.

Abstract:
Insufficiently known pages from the history of Plast are considered in the article. They concern to the revival of the organization in the camps for prisoners of war – DPs – in Germany after World War II and the beginning of the organization activities in Australia. It is concluded that the formation of the first Plast circles during this period has been spontaneous and taken place within the framework of active social, political, cultural, religious and economic life of Ukrainians in the DP camps. The Union of Ukrainian Plast Emigrants (UUPE) leаded by commandant Atanas Figol has been revived to direct this process to organized course. During 1945–1948 he has conducted a number of meetings important for the further development of Plast. Organizational and ideological principles of its activities analyzed in the submitted research are formed at them. It is proved that the Congress in Aschaffenburg of 1948 has become the milestone event for Plast. It has taken place as a part of celebration of the 35th anniversary of the organization creation. Taking into account the beginning of the relocation of many Ukrainians to the places of the new settlement, the Congress has been held under the slogan On a Long Journey to a Great Goal. It is found out that the main threats awaiting Ukrainians abroad in the understanding of the Plast leaders of this period are described. Attention is also paid to moral, spiritual and ideological heritage that Plast members should take in this journey; the requirements for physical development and national-patriotic education; the ideal of a young Ukrainian; ways of preservation of national and cultural space, etc. These guidelines have formed the basis for the development of Plast activities in Australia, where the first wave of Ukrainian emigrants arrive in 1948–1951. The main ways of their implementation, as well as the challenges faced by Ukrainians on the new continent territory are revealed. The names of the first Plast members in Australia, data on their number, location of circles, artistic groups in which they participate, are introduces into scientific circulation in the research.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the modernization processes in the modern education system of Ukraine, primarily in the formation of its pedagogical potential. The expediency of using in this sphere the achievements of foreign states in which Ukrainians live is substantiated. It has been proved that the most significant experience in training pedagogical staff for the Ukrainian schooling system in the diaspora has been developed in Canada. It is carried out by universities and university colleges. It is established that their educational and professional programs include academic courses, professional courses, and practical activities at school (educational practice). The task of these courses is to provide future teachers with knowledge of the subjects they will teach at school. The curricula include mandatory fundamental disciplines (development of children/adolescents, education of children with special needs, methods of teaching different subjects, theory of learning, etc.) and optional courses of professional direction offered by universities. The peculiarities of training teachers of Ukrainian disciplines in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Toronto universities and the organization of their further professional growth by public institutions of Canadian Ukrainians are analyzed. It was established that Ukrainian studies in Canadian universities have a degree structure of training specialists and cover three levels: Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. However, different universities have different Ukrainian language training programs and, accordingly, their graduates have various opportunities for further employment. It was found that postgraduate education and professional growth of Ukrainian school teachers are provided by public organizations of foreign Ukrainians (World Coordinating Educational Council, Congress of Ukrainians of Canada, School Councils, etc.). They organize summer teacher training courses, seminars, webinars, online training, etc. The ideas of foreign experience, which it is advisable to creatively implement in the activities of institutions of higher pedagogical education in Ukraine, are distinguished.

Abstract:
The article reproduces the history of the publication of the prison community of Ukrainian warriors-prisoners in Salzwedel “Vilne Slovo” (“Free Word”) in 1916-1917, which regularly informed the prisoners about events in the world and Ukraine, the situation on the fronts of the First World War, includes information on news of social and cultural life in the occupied Ukrainian lands. The newspaper succeeded in significantly influencing the formation of the national consciousness of the prisoners, with its materials, it managed to raise thousands of conscious Ukrainians in the camp of Salzwedel. Also, the “Vilne Slovo” successfully performed the mission of communication between the camp Ukrainian community and its members, who temporarily left the camp as part of the working teams. In the relatively short time of its existence, the prison magazine of captive Ukrainians in Salzwedel has become an authoritative Ukrainian foreign publication, which in the conditions of war and further revolutionary upheavals in Germany carried the word of support and solace for the prisoners, inspiring their hopes of returning home, proclaiming them a belief in the state selfaffirmation of Ukraine and the need for its armed defense against the invasion of the Bolshevik Russia.

Abstract:
The article attempts to identify changes that have occurred in the lingual world model of Ukrainians in recent years. The results of the “Word of the Year” contest in Ukraine served as the material for observation and analysis. Every year the online dictionary of neologisms and slang of the modern Ukrainian language “Myslovo” declares the “word of the year” – the most socially significant, popular and used word. Other nominees in the short list for the award are also important words to indicate current phenomena, events, concepts or persons. Usually, “modern” words fall into the nomination. Such lexemes are contemporary (reflect current events in the society), universal (formed by the new-fashioned trends), popular (are in the center of public thought and debate). Thus, in 2013 the “word of the year” became “Euromaidan”, in 2014 – “cyborgs”, in 2015 – “blockade”. In 2016, “corruption” became much more relevant, in 2017 the most popular was “bezviz” (visa-free regime), and in 2018 originally Greek word “tomos” became widely used. Therefore, the chosen “words of the year” (and nominees for this award) act as lexical representatives of those phenomena and events that are of the most concern for the society, and consequently have impact on the lingual world model of Ukrainians. The results of the Ukrainian competition were compared with the results of the similar contests in other countries, in particular, Belarus and Russia. Using comparative analysis, the common features of the Ukrainian and Belarussian lingual world models of XXI century were revealed as well as the opposite views of Ukrainians and Russians on important socio-political phenomena. For example, Belarusians use the loanword from Ukrainian “vyshyvanka” (‘colloquial name for the embroidered shirt in Ukrainian and Belarusian national costumes’) from which the derived word – neologism “vyshymaika” (‘colloquial name for the t-shirt that combines tradional embroidery with the modern design’) was formed. The imperial ambitions of Russians were verbalized in the politically motivated neologism-hashtag “#krymnash”(Crimea is ours), which became the “Word of the Year 2014” in Russia. Therefore, it can be claimed that the XXI century Ukrainian standart language is being enriched with new lexemes that are gradually being used by Ukrainians, becoming part of their lingual world model. These words may be partially (see “Euromaidan”, “bezviz”) or completely (see “tomos”) adopted from the other donor languages, but, as practice shows, they are being organically incorporated into the Ukrainian usus.

Abstract:
This article explores the features and trends in inbound and outbound tourism flows between Ukraine and the Baltic Sea region (BSR) countries in 2012—2019. The research question is whether inbound or outbound tourism prevailed and how visa-free travel to the Schengen Area affected the number of Ukrainians travelling to the Baltic Sea Region. Two data sources were used in the study. These are the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum and data from the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine on the number of foreign citizens visiting Ukraine and the number of Ukrainians travelling abroad. The study employs the statistical methods of structural shifts analysis, time series analysis, and graphical visualization. The findings indicate that Ukrainian outbound tourism was growing steadily over the study period, whilst visa-free travel to the Schengen Area had no statistically significant impact on the number of outbound tourists from Ukraine to the BSR. Outbound tourism flow prevailed over inbound. The number of inbound tourists to Ukraine sharply declined after 2013 because of the socio-political situation in the country. The analysis reveals significant changes in inbound and outbound tourism flow structures. The COVID-19 pandemic is shown to be a critical factor influencing the current state and prospects of the tourism industry.

Abstract:
The article attempts to consider the labor emigration of Ukrainians through the work of Ivan Franko in the historical and economic aspect. The writer 's views and position on the problems of labor emigration of Ukrainians in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are discussed, as well as parallels with modern emigration processes are conducted. Attention is drawn to the description of the methods, means and mechanisms that were used to emigrate Ukrainians, which were covered in the scientific and literary work of Ivan Franko. It also explains the up-front factors that have prompted Ukrainians to emigrate, in particular labor, and attempts to analyze the positive and negative effects of Ukrainian emigration processes in different historical periods through the prism of Ivan Franko work. Also, the relationship between land ownership and Ukrainian emigration abroad is traced. It is emphasized that many questions raised by Ivan Franko have not lost their relevance in the present historical period. Ivan Franko in a number of his publications makes an attempt to understand the reasons for the emigration of the complex - economic, political, domestic, and environmental. In particular, he is one of the first not only among Ukrainian but also European researchers to draw attention to the deterioration of the ecological component and its direct impact on the emigration processes of the population. Also, the ideological and propaganda aspect in the influences on the emigration of Ukrainians. Particularly visible in the works of Ivan Franko, the inability of state and municipal government to quickly influence the process of emigration. The article gives a brief description of the research of this problem in the works of Ivan Franko by Ukrainian scholars. The urgency of this problem has gained a new sound today, as Ukraine received free access to the world labor market, and also found itself at the epicenter of a geopolitical conflict between civilizational warfare, which, in turn, influenced the qualitative and quantitative indicators of emigration.

Abstract:
The war of Russia against Ukraine has shown the terrorist face of the occupants, their barbaric values, the worldview of the vandals. The occupants are pursuing a strategy of destruction of Ukrainian identity and the spiritual heritage of Ukrainians. At the same time, the heroism of Ukrainian people in the struggle for independence has united the entire civilized world. The self-organization of Ukrainians in the defense of their land has assured a maturity of the civil society. This is a phenomenon of Ukrainian society, which forms an important issue for the scientists to study. Various factors explaining it are considered in the article. In the authoress opinion, positive phenomena in the development of folk culture associated with the processes of self-identification and self-determination are of the great importance in Ukraine at the beginning of the 21st century. In particular, it can be seen clearly after the materials of study of the revival of traditional clothing and the spread of folk style in everyday life, connected directly with the national raising during the Orange Revolution and the Revolution of Dignity. Folk clothing has always been an important marker of national identification, but during the war of 2014, started by Russia, the use of folk costumes becomes a manifestation of the bearers’ active stand in the national sovereignty defence. These processes show that traditional culture is one of the determining factors for the development of every society. The worldview, psychological and mental characteristics of the Russian occupants and Ukrainians are considered after the materials of Internet resources and surveys. They confirm the existence of two opposite worlds: the world of slaves and the world of free citizens. The importance of scientific research in the humanities for the refutation of the falsifications of Ukrainian cultural heritage, the direct succession of the Kyiv state, and the continuous tradition by Putin’s politicians is emphasized.

Abstract:
This essay provides an overview of the activity of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) during the two decades when the author served as its director. During that time he and his CIUS colleagues pursued the goals of integrating and mainstreaming Ukrainian studies into North American and world scholarship and becoming the leading world research institution dedicated to the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge about Ukraine and Ukrainians. The CIUS did so by supporting research; publishing scholarly and educational materials; organizing seminars, lectures, and conferences; promoting Ukrainian studies courses at colleges and universities; granting scholarships and fellowships; and providing knowledge and understanding of Ukraine to academic, political, diplomatic, military, and business communities in Canada and abroad. This essay describes these activities and efforts in detail, including in the areas of Ukrainian-Canadian studies, promoting Ukrainian studies in Ukraine and Russia, monitoring and assessing events in Ukraine, and assisting Ukraine’s transition to a democratic society and a free-market economy.

Abstract:
The national minorities question in Romania has been one of crises and polemics. This is due, in part, to the fact that Greater Romania, established at the end of World War I, brought the Old Romanian Kingdom into a body politic (a kingdom itself relatively free of minority problems), with territories inhabited largely by national minorities. Thus, the population of Transylvania and the Banat, both of which had been constituent provinces of the defunct Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, included large numbers of Hungarians and Germans, while Bessarabia, a province of the Russian empire, included large numbers of Jews. While the Hungarian (Szeklers and Magyars), Germans (Saxons and Swabians), and Jewish minorities were the largest and most difficult to integrate into Greater Romania, other sizeable national minorities such as the Bulgarians, Russians, Ukrainians, Tatars, Serbians, Turks, and Gypsies also posed problems to the rulers of Greater Romania during the interwar period and, in some cases, even after World War II.

Abstract:
Between 1800 and 1917 the music section at the Library of Congress grew from a few items in The Gentleman's Magazine to almost a million items. The history of this development provides a unique view of the infant discipline of musicology and the central role that libraries played in its growth in the United States. Between 1800 and 1870 only 500 items were acquired by the music section at the Library of Congress. In 1870 approximately 36,000 copyright deposits (which had been accumulating at several copyright depositories since 1789) enlarged the music section by more than seventy fold. After 1870 the copyright process brought an avalanche of music items into the Library of Congress. In 1901 Herbert Putnam, Librarian of Congress, hired American-born, German-educated Oscar Sonneck to be the second Chief of the Music Division. Together Putnam and Sonneck produced an ambitious acquisitions program, a far-sighted classification, cataloging, and shelving scheme, and an extensive series of publications. They were part of Putnam's strategy to transform the Library of Congress from a legislative into a national library. Sonneck wanted to make American students of music independent of European libraries and to establish the discipline of musicology in the United States. Through easy access to comprehensive and diverse collections Putnam and Sonneck succeeded in making the Library of Congress and its music section a symbol of the free society that it served.

Abstract:
It was established that in the process of Ukrainian refugees’ integration in the EU, there are frequent instances of insufficient mutual understanding between the participants of international communication. Typical examples of this are the contacts of refugees with the official services of host countries. Refugees are dissatisfied that unfamiliar bureaucratic regulations, complex procedures, and long waiting periods hinder quick and trouble-free resolution of issues. The officers of the services are also dissatisfied with the misunderstanding and uneasy acceptance of the prescribed rules by the refugees. Both parties are mutually dissatisfied with each other's behavior. This behavior seems incomprehensible and unjustified, although in fact it is quite normal for the other party. But the parties lack awareness of the cultural peculiarities of behavior existing in another country. Since human behavior is largely determined by values, the perception of basic life values importance by Ukrainians and residents of other EU countries was studied. Based on the combined data of World Values Survey and European Values Study for 2017-2020, a secondary analysis was conducted focusing on sociological indicators of the importance of six main components of life: family, friends and acquaintances, work, free time, religion and politics, for residents of eight European countries from different clusters of the Inglehart–Welzel world map of cross-cultural differences. It was determined that in the inter-country comparison, there are much more similarities than differences in most indicators. This is a favorable factor for establishing a good mutual understanding between the participants of international communication in the process of Ukrainian refugees’ integration in the EU. In order to improve mutual understanding, it is proposed to inform refugees more about the current rules of administrative services provision and to spread in the public space of host countries knowledge about the national peculiarities of behavior, specific cultural norms, traditions and customs of various European peoples.

Abstract:
The mythology of Ancient Greece and Rome has become an inexhaustible source of images, concepts, deep meanings that have received their consideration in many linguistic cultures of the world and are manifested in a special way in each of them. Scientific research analyses the concept of mentality and outlines its main features. The article attempts to record the mental traits of Ukrainians in borrowed phraseological units. The object of the analysis is phraseological units selected from dictionaries, reference books and texts of several languages. The phraseological units soar in the empyrean (have one’s head in the clouds), hurl thunderbolts, lares and penates (return to one’s hearth and home), rise like a phoenix from the ashes, etc., have been analyzed. The article is an attempt to trace such features of the Ukrainian mentality as emotionality, cordocentrysm, anteism, love of freedom, etc., through the example of the studied phraseological units. The actualization of certain ancient images, the selection of mythologists and phraseological units, their transformations, variations, and the creation of new, proper Ukrainian phrases on the basis of borrowings – all this eloquently speaks of the assimilation of ancient motifs in the Ukrainian language. The results of a free associative experiment are indicative, which has made it possible to trace the actualization of the phraseme lares and penates on the modern linguistic soil. 466 respondents aged from 16 to 33 shared their associations. All responses were combined into semantic groups with a common lexical meaning. The survey confirmed the assumption of the presence of specific mental traits of Ukrainians in the internal form of the phraseme-stimulus. The collected and analyzed material makes it possible to assert that phraseological units of ancient origin acquired ethno-national features, adapted to the modern language world model and transmit key features of Ukrainian mentality.

The correct and precise nomenclature of the veins of the lower extremity is a necessary tool for communication. Three important changes have been done over the last 13 years. Terminologia Anatomica, the latest version of the Latin anatomical nomenclature, was published in 1998, extended in the area of the lower extremity veins with two consensus documents, in 2001, during the 14th World Congress of the International Union of Phlebology and in 2004 during the 21st World Congress of the International Union of Angiology. This article is a free continuation of two previous articles, reviewing the detailed anatomy and correct nomenclature of the superficial veins of the lower extremities and veins of pelvis. Now, it is concentrated on the deep venous system, in which 15 new terms have been added in both Latin and English languages.

Abstract:
Abstract. The article is based on the analysis of the works of the famous Ukrainian thinker from Canada, Yuriy Mulyk-Lutsyk, who in the mid-twentieth century. deeply considered the state of the Ukrainian diaspora, its search for a strategy of its development abroad within the limits of ethnic particularism and international universalism. His thoughts have not lost their relevance today, as new waves of migration pose the same questions to Ukrainians: whether to remain or dissolve as a national community among a multiethnic and multicultural world. The migrants, diasporans, whose grandchildren have lost their connection with their historical homeland and are part of other multinational states, are particularly disturbed by those outside Ukraine. The main problem of the migrants and diasporas of that time, according to Mulyk-Lutsyk, was that they did not distinguish between ethnic particularism and interethnic universalism, identifying or substituting one another. This led to radical one-sidedness: the Ukrainians cared for one or the other in themselves. The main reason for this imbalance according to the thinker was that Ukrainians intellectually were not ready to migrate. They did not have time to realize their ethnic identity, their uniqueness, as they got into millstone universalism, which led them to "spiritual turmoil, gypsyism". Instead of meeting with other worlds, Ukrainians experienced a cultural trauma. It is possible to overcome the latter by realizing the equality of the universal and the specific, the universal and the ethnic, which are two "natural signs of one and the same". The Ukrainians should understand that they/he are/is human (this is universal), because he has such physical and spiritual attributes that are common to all people; at the same time he is a member of this ethnic community (it is specific, particular) because it contains such features that are not present and cannot be found in other ethnic communities (language, history, culture, ideology). Although universal and specific are opposite to one another, however, in the person they exist in combination both as a physical indivisible unity and as a spiritual one. Yu.Mulyk-Lutsyk realized that integration into a multidimensional space, sometimes so alien, but to be friendly (home) for himself, is very difficult. He insisted on fostering within himself both national and universal, where the particular was affirmed through the universal and the universal manifested in the particular. Eventually the thinker urged: if the ethnic community understands what the essence of its ethnicism is, that is, it realizes the secret connection between ethnic content and ethnic form and learns the absolute, natural boundaries of ethnicism, which are not free to artificially, illegally, unnaturally, contraband; and if the ethnic community at the same time understands the essence of its universalism (humanity), that is, it realizes the secret connection between human content and human form, and learns the absolute, natural limits of humanity, in which it is not free to artificially, illegally, unnaturally, contraband if and only then the ethnic community in general and each of its constituent units in particular will form a unity on a natural basis - national unity. Knowledge of the experience gained by the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada may be of use to those who wish to migrate to other countries and other cultural worlds.

Abstract:
This paper outlines the process of China's accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO) with special focus given to the negotiations between the United States and China, and the European Union (EU) and China. Various economic and political issues behind the scene explain why the US refused to accept China into the WTO for the last 14 years. The economic and political changes in America coupled with the economic and political changes in China placed the two countries in a position where a U.S-China bilateral agreement could be made. The EU acted as a free rider in these negotiations such that it achieved most of its objectives from the conclusion of the Sino-US negotiation. Moreover, the EU could have topped China's concession to the US if it had taken advantage of the opportunity right before the PNTR vote carne to the US Congress.

Abstract:
Early American Sheet Music is a digital sheet-music collection curated and published by The Library of Congress. This beautiful resource provides open access to a specific classification number, M1.A1, by providing high-quality images and an easy-to-use visual browsing interface. It showcases early print sheet music and copied manuscripts from the United States and the colonies through 1820. However, the manner in which this digital collection has been curated highlights the changing roles and responsibilities of the library from custodian to custodian and publisher. While digital collections are enabling researchers across the world to see the resource, the curation tailors the online collection, thus invoking limitations on researchers. Further questions centre on issues of copyright. While the collection is free to use for personal research and education purposes, what persists is a constant confusion when it comes to downloading and performing early music found in digital collections. Performing such collections may be unique to music, but it is a serious issue that requires clarification. Using the new Early American Sheet Music resource as a centre for discussion, this article interrogates the current issues of digital music collections.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the organized women's movement abroad. The Ukrainian women's movement, which arose and began to develop in all the countries where Ukrainians immigrated and lived, became the continuation and development of the Ukrainian women's movement on Ukrainian lands and had the goal of gaining women's rights in access to education and solving all public affairs. The reason for the emigration of Ukrainians was unfavorable political circumstances in the empires, to which at the end of the 19th century included all Ukrainian lands, as well as the economic decline and slow and ineffective development of the economy of both empires. The organized Ukrainian women's movement has always relied on the principles of equality of people regardless of gender. The activity of Ukrainian women's organizations was based on the idea of gender equality. It is obvious that the concept of "gender equality" refers to modern legal terminology, and at the beginning of the formation of the organized Ukrainian women's movement, such a term did not exist. Equality of people, regardless of gender, was outlined by the concept of "women's emancipation". What is interesting in the development of the Ukrainian women's movement in the free world is the difference with the women's movement of Canadians or Australians, which had a feminist component at its core, that is, it was based on the opposition of the sexes. Such antagonism between the sexes arose in those peoples who had their own state and were not subjected to national oppression. The activities of women's organizations were aimed at identifying discriminatory social practices and fighting for women's rights. Since Ukrainians did not have their own state and were oppressed, both men and women, there could be no conflict between the sexes. Therefore, for the Ukrainian women's movement, the basic values were the acquisition of women's rights, the preservation of national identity, traditions, the education of youth, and the preservation of the church. It should be noted that Ukrainian men supported women in their endeavors. Therefore, the activity of the organized Ukrainian women's movement is outlined in the context of gender equality.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to study modern migration challenges for Ukraine and the problems of re-immigration of Ukrainians in the post-war period. The processes of globalization and integration of the world economy have their share in the growth of the dynamism of the international labor movement. International labor migration helps to overcome cultural, ethnic and traditional borders, but simultaneously creates risks regarding the development of the economies of recipient countries. In the history of migration processes in Ukraine in the twentieth century and up to the present one may allocate six stages of external labor migration. The current period includes two waves of forced migration: as a result of obtaining a visa-free regime with the EU and the russian invasion of Ukraine (2014 and 2022), as well as a wave of decline in the number of migrant workers due to pandemic restrictions during 2020–2021. The problem of labor migration existed in Ukraine even before the start of a full-scale russian intervention, because of the unregulated and imperfect legislation, low wages, and the lack of a policy of re-immigration of Ukrainian workers. The growth of external labor migration of Ukrainians can lead to an outflow of labor force, which is especially risky in the context of a demographic crisis. A higher level of wages in European countries creates a risk of Ukrainians losing their desire to work in Ukraine. This is true of both the recipients of remittances on our territory and those who have decided to change their country of residence forever, which may become an obstacle to the post-war recovery of the national economy. Therefore, already now, even in the conditions of wartime, the government should begin to implement measures for the re-immigration of Ukrainian labor. The implementation of the experience of other countries in similar situations in full is impractical due to the outdated approaches, other location, behavior of the authorities, reputation of forced migrants, etc. Thus, Ukraine should develop its own re-immigration policy with the involvement of European countries, international organizations and its own migrants.

Abstract:
The article tells about how the Ukrainian diaspora magazine "Visti Kombatanta" addressed the issues of everyday life of servicemen in the twentieth century. The author found that many elements of military everyday life are contained in the memories of members of various military formations in which Ukrainians served. The pages of the magazine cover the following aspects of everyday life: military training, relations in the military environment, the quality of logistics and nutrition, spiritual and material care of soldiers, participation in hostilities. Separately, the article considers how the publications of the magazine "Visti Kombatanta" covered the situation of Ukrainian prisoners of war. The journal publications reveal the peculiarities of military everyday life in the armies and military formations where Ukrainians served in the twentieth century. In particular, these are the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic, the Free Cossacks, the Ukrainian Galician Army, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, and the Polish Army of General Anders. In addition to the mentioned military units, it was found out what the everyday life of servicemen in the Ukrainian units of the German armed forces was like during the Second World War. In particular, the Galicia Division, air defense units. A large number of publications in the magazine are devoted to the events of November 1918, when independence was proclaimed in the western Ukrainian lands. Separate publications in the journal contain descriptions of the activities of the military medical service and the Red Cross. The author found that the publications of the "Visti Kombatanta" provide in-depth material to cover the issue of everyday life of servicemen.

Abstract:
The author suggests rethinking the institutional status of philosophy in the context of the analysis of International philosophical congresses as collective forms of expression of thought. It is stated that communication platforms for philosophical debates such as seminars, conferences, congresses, etc. largely determine the content of philosophical knowledge, therefore it is impossible to raise the question of “pure” philosophy, free from the sphere of conversation (Tatiana G. Shchedrina), in which philosophy is produced as an event. Science and philosophy as communicative phenomena require collective forms of work. Scientific communities are an indispensable attribute of the existence of science, just like philosophy is the presence of a philosophical school, college, lyceum, academy. Even if science and philosophy are done “armchairly”, then the “armchair” format also presupposes a communication platform, a network of communication between different authors. In this sense, any conferences, congresses, and round tables – with a successful coincidence of academic circumstances – become not just a continuation of philosophy but also a direct part. On them, not only and not so much the “philosophical result” is presented, but the process of philosophizing is going on. This indisputable significance of World congresses as collective forms of philosophy and as its self-consciousness was recorded by the famous Russian logician N.A. Vasiliev when he was thinking about the results of the Third World Congress of Philosophy.
