Abstract:
This chapter traces the history of professional team sports in order to place the issues covered in the Congressional hearings in the proper context. It first considers the rise of baseball as America's national pastime and Major League Baseball (MLB)'s decision to maintain two separate leagues, the American League and the National League. It then discusses the dispute between MLB and the rival Federal League, along with the emergence of other sports that achieved Big League status, namely, football and basketball. It also examines the prosperity of the National Football League (NFL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) as well as the appearance of new challengers to their dominance after World War II. Finally, it looks at the Flood v. Kuhn, a Supreme Court case that challenged baseball's reserve clause, along with the rise of free agency.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the issue of franchise relocation. Legislators had two main concerns throughout the series of hearings: to procure teams for their constituents while avoiding losing teams via relocation. The legislators' concerns were imbued with an element of reality, at least. Cities with multiple Major League Baseball (MLB) teams usually had one team that was struggling, and legislators held a different attitude to such teams relocating than they would with regard to later relocations of prosperous teams. This chapter first considers three options for acquiring a big-league team: purchase an existing team, hope for an expansion team in an established league, or enter a team into a new league. It then discusses the economics of franchise relocations, along with the early histories of franchise turnovers in professional sports leagues, including the National Football League (NFL) and its predecessor, the American Professional Football Association. It also looks at Columbia Broadcasting System's (CBS) purchase of the New York Yankees during the 1964 season that sparked fears of an unfair alliance.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the antitrust implications of the proposed merger between the National Football League (NFL) and its rival American Football League (AFL). NFL owners had successfully resisted the All-America Football Conference in the late 1940s and monopolized professional football for the next decade. When Texas oilman Lamar Hunt was repeatedly rebuffed in his efforts to secure a team, he decided to form the AFL with other frustrated entrepreneurs seeking teams in mid-1959. The NFL and the AFL went on to fight for several years. Football owners understood that gaining a full-fledged antitrust exemption was not likely, so they concentrated on getting a merger agreement approved by Congress. This chapter discusses the Congressional hearings held in 1966 to tackle the issue of whether to grant antitrust exemptions to football, with particular emphasis on Pete Rozelle's testimony. It also considers House majority leader Hale Boggs's memorandum rebutting an argument that granting an exemption would lay the precedent for other industries to seek similar exemptions. Finally, it looks at the NFL's justification for its proposed merger with the AFL.

Ruck, Rob. Baseball’s Global Diffusion. Edited by Robert Edelman and Wayne Wilson. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199858910.013.7.

Abstract:
Baseball spread beyond US borders, taking hold in the Caribbean and parts of the Pacific, but never attained the global influence that British sport achieved. A. G. Spalding’s efforts to export the game and, with it, “American” values, via his 1888–1889 circumnavigation of the world met with little success. Baseball could not dislodge British football, rugby, and cricket, which had already gained purchase abroad due to Britain’s larger global presence. In the Caribbean, where baseball became the dominant sport, Cuba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and other countries made the game into their own national pastimes. Baseball there, open to players of all races and nations, modeled the democratic version of sport that would not exist in US pro leagues until integration after World War II. Since then, Major League Baseball has attracted ever-greater numbers of players from abroad, first from the Caribbean and more recently from Japan and Asia.
