Abstract:
AbstractToday we live in a world where the majority of wars are no longer interstate, a development that over the last few decades has often left the international community, in particular the United Nations as it was originally conceived, ill equipped to respond. The nimble action required for contemporary conflict resolution and peacebuilding now primarily lies in the hands of local actors and states, sometimes supported by international actors. But it is not always clear who these local actors are or what they need in order to achieve sustainable peace. As part of the roundtable “World Peace (And How We Can Achieve It),” this essay looks in more detail at what we mean by “local” in conflict-affected contexts and asks how local is local enough when resolving conflicts and building peace. It identifies tensions and concerns such as the need for the international community to have a well-defined and easily identified “local agenda” when, in reality, there are often several competing local agendas. The essay presents the Everyday Peace Indicators project as a vehicle that can be used to help communicate these local needs to international actors, and argues for the importance of understanding people's perceived realities in addition to, if not more than, their actual realities when trying to understand peace and conflict trends. In order to do this, we need to more effectively problematize peacebuilding for positive conflict disruption.

Abstract:
The emerging peace geographies subfield has made significant contributions to peace research by showing how peace is a contested spatial process and political discourse. This article integrates peace geographies with the until now ignored trans-rational ‘many peaces’ framework’s exploration of an even wider range of peace imaginaries. Yet some forms exacerbate rather than provide alternatives to intersectional violences pervasive in today’s world. I argue for a normative framework to evaluate the ‘plurality of the peaces’ illuminated by these subfields, proposing ‘radical trans-relational peace’ – ecological dignity and solidarity through trans-community networks – as a geographically and politically situated conception to analyze the ‘many peaces’.

Abstract:
Peace is not an esoteric word. It has philosophical underpinnings and real world connotations. In a nuclear era with the latest, and manifest, conflicts which may end in total war, peace becomes a deceptively complex word. Peace Research and peace movements become dualities which are necessary strategies for world peace. As a scientific compilation of data and meaning methodology, they are a comparatively new phenomena but in terms of some kind of a movement have always been active. Even if only a protest by a minority it has been an ongoing phenomenon. Peace Research and eventually peace movements become part of a social consciousness that is important to achieve a political end—world peace. This paper spells out the meaning of Peace Research, its development and links with peace movements. Some peace movements in different parts of the world have been brought out merely to substantiate the peace research and its concepts. It is by no means exhaustive. A lot needs to be researched and brought out. But one main idea seems amply clear that the world system needs restructuring to absorb Peace Research and peace movements if only to rationalise it, make it viable for both study and activism. So also a change is needed among the “realist” thinking if only to achieve positive and developmental peace, i.e. peace combined with social justice.

Abstract:
AbstractFor as long as humans have fought wars, we have been beguiled and frustrated by the prospect of world peace. Only a very few of us today believe that world peace is possible. Indeed, the very mention of the term “world peace” raises incredulity. In contrast, as part of the roundtable “World Peace (And How We Can Achieve It),” this essay makes the case for taking world peace more seriously. It argues that world peace is possible, though neither inevitable nor irreversible. World peace, I argue, is something that every generation must strive for, because the ideas, social structures, and practices that make war possible are likely to remain with us. The essay proceeds in three parts. First, I briefly set out what I mean by peace and world peace. Second, I explain why I think that world peace is possible. Third, I examine how the world might be nudged in a more peaceful direction.

Abstract:
The thesis, entitled Barack Obama and World Peace: A Rhetorical Inquiry, is a qualitative research paper that appraises President Obama's commitment to global peace, through a thematic analysis of a cross section of his speeches. Against the background of Mr. Obama's receipt of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, the thesis evaluates in five chapters Mr. Obama's merit as an icon of global peace by seeking a possible rhetorical vision of peace emerging from a cross section of his speeches, and consequently establishing a possible justification for his receipt of the Nobel Prize, using the Fantasy-theme method of rhetorical criticism. The thesis concludes that there is a rhetorical vision of peace emerging from a cross section of President Obama's speeches, and that he may consequently be called an icon of global peace, deserving of having won the Nobel Prize.

Abstract:

This dissertation addresses the topics of stigma and legal consciousness through close examination of the attitudes and life experiences of legal gun owners in upstate New York. Based in the symbolic interactionist tradition, and using a grounded theory approach, this project explores data gathered from participant-observation sessions, and semi-structured interviews with 37 participants. Analysis of this data reveals that respondents highlight safety, responsibility, skillful operation, and fun as the primary values they associate with the ownership and use of firearms. Additionally, in a departure from previous research in this area, respondents reported few individual experiences of social stigma, and engage in very few stigma management techniques surrounding their ownership and use of firearms. However, respondents do experience negative outcomes surrounding their engagement with the political realm, leading to perceptions of disadvantage, especially in state-level politics. Using Ewick and Silbey’s theory of legal consciousness as a framework, respondents’ accounts reveal how their perceptions of the political process as a whole are best viewed using the “with the law” perspective, whereas their attitudes about New York State politics specifically are better described using the “against the law” perspective. These research findings can be applied more broadly to gain understanding about the nature of stigma and its effects on individuals and groups, as well as the conditions under which groups feel engaged with, or disconnected from, legal and political processes.

During the Cold War, the Swiss Government adhered to the traditional understanding of security, which was limited to the military and political sphere. The concept of the common defense, which was officially adopted in 1973, provided fora build-up of military capacities of the state in order to prevent attempts to put pressure on the Confederation through intimidation, protect its national interests and pull back possible armed attacks that threatened its security. In subsequent years the international situation has evolved considerably. The priority of the modern Swiss peace policy is the new conflict prevention as well as the prevention of recurrence or deterioration of existing ones. Neutral Switzerland is in demand as a patron power: in particular, it represents the mutual interests of Georgia and Russia, which have not had direct diplomatic relations since 2008. Swiss diplomats also serve as intermediaries. Thus, M. Ambühl promoted the signing of the Zurich Protocols (2009), which marked the beginning of the normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey. Another area of good offices is promoting dialogue, in which a third party provides only logistical support, not taking part in the negotiation process itself. In 2004, Bürgenstock (canton of Nidwalden), and in 2016–2017 - Mont Pelerin (canton of Vaud), Geneva and Crans-Montana (canton of Valais) have become platforms for exploring ways to resolve the Cyprus conflict between Greece and Turkey

Abstract:
The women and peace hypothesis suggests that women are more likely than men to choose peace and compromise over violent conflict, whether as ordinary citizens or as government leaders. I test this concept by analyzing the percent of women in the parliaments and executive cabinets of 93 nations over a 31-year-period, comparing these figures to the presence of violent interstate conflicts for each country-year. Controlling for wealth, democratic status, national capabilities, military expenditures, and contiguity, I find moderate support for the women and peace hypothesis. This support continues when democratic system type is interacted with the measured office. While women do not affect a nation’s likelihood of violent conflict to the same degree that other, well-documented predictors do, the effect of women in higher office is nonetheless still significant.

Abstract:
A virtuous life is the fruit of a mind with a rich inner landscape. It can be overtly inferred by sincerity in speech, generosity of righteous deeds and is elegantly fulfilled by inner contentment. World peace entails that despite prevailing differences and disapprovals, global citizens find it proper to continue to work together towards meliorating the quality of life for one and all. This paper analyzed secondary data to unveil the instrumental role played by virtues in the conquest of peace. The findings deducted are indicative of the seminal importance of virtue inculcation as means to restore world peace. Abstract:
Fethullah Gülen is one of the most influential scholars and thinkers in the contemporary Islamic world, particularly in Turkey. Although recent studies have put forward Gülen’s ideas on various topics, Gülen’s approach to peace building is one of the less studied. Given the contemporary reality of wars and ethnic/religious strife, this is a neglect that needs to be corrected. Fethullah Gülen stands up for peace and for the prevention of any clash of civilisa- tions, not only through his speeches and writing, but through his actions as well. This paper examines the concept of peace building through Gülen’s writings and activities with refer- ence to the main sources of Islam and Gülen’s commentary on them. In focusing on Gülen’s activities, the paper emphasises certain American institutions, notably the Washington D.C. based Rumi Forum for Interfaith Dialogue (of which Gülen is the honorary president), and its contribution to peace-building through interfaith activities.

Abstract:
This report aims to explain and assess the contribution of WFP Ethiopia’s climate adaptation and risk management programmes to peace in Ethiopia. The research focused on the Satellite Index Insurance for Pastoralists in Ethiopia (SIIPE) programme, a multidimensional programme that aims to enhance beneficiaries’ integrated risk management capacities. The results indicate that the SIIPE programme can potentially contribute to conflict reduction and thus negative peace in the Somali region of Ethiopia through reducing herders’ mobility during droughts and improving natural resource management. They also find that there is a lack of clarity regarding the selection criteria for the programme, which proved to be a point of potential contention, and that conflict analysis and sensitivity are not incorporated into the programme’s design, since conflict reduction was not an objective of SIIPE. Based on these findings, the report makes recommendations to improve WFP’s contribution to the prospects for peace.

Abstract:
The SIPRI Lecture is an annual event focusing on major themes in peace and security. The event provides a platform for prominent global thought leaders who share the values underpinning SIPRI and its research. The fourth SIPRI Lecture, which was held in a hybrid format on 23 May 2022, was delivered by HE Helen Clark and focused on the theme ‘Environment of Peace’. The lecture presented the findings of the SIPRI report Environment of Peace: Security in a New Era of Risk. In her address, Clark pointed out that the climate crisis looms ever larger, the world is off track to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, and the war in Ukraine is not only having tragic consequences in Ukraine but also has potentially catastrophic repercussions far beyond that country’s borders. Transformative change is needed, which will require global cooperation; but the current geopolitical climate makes it far more difficult to address these interconnected risks.

Abstract:
The World Food Programme (WFP) has supported food security and nutrition in Sri Lanka since 1968. Based on research conducted in the Monaragala district in the south, and the Mullaitivu district in the north, on gender dynamics and community resilience, this report aims to identify the ways in which selected WFP projects impact the prospects for peace. The study analyzes the linkages between gender and social cohesion of two WFP resilience-building projects. Its results show that WFP’s projects had the potential to improve social cohesion, especially through the involvement of women in higher-value agriculture and the provision of sustainable income sources. The report highlights the possibilities of strengthening gender transformation through WFP engagement and of contributing to sustainable peace in a particularly difficult operating context where ethnic and religious divisions are wide and gender grievances are often ignored.

Abstract:
This paper presents emerging thinking about the challenges of measuring peace impact and the possible solutions to these challenges in conflict and peacebuilding settings. SIPRI and the World Food Programme (WFP) launched a Knowledge Partnership in 2018 to help strengthen WFP’s contribution to improving the prospects for peace in the countries where it operates. This paper contributes to the thematic deep dive on measurement, which assesses current empirical methods of measurement and possible areas for improvement as part of the SIPRI–WFP Knowledge Partnership. The Peace Evidence Expert Research (PEER) Group was established in 2020 by institutions and experts that convened to explore ongoing initiatives and build expertise in measuring peace impact in fragile, conflict and post-conflict settings. The report provides an overview of the 40 meetings convened by the group. Based on these discussions, lessons learned and ways forward are proposed for practitioners and researchers.
