The act of applying makeup is a ritual shared by many, often beginning at an early age. Though makeup is presented as a final product in the public sphere, the process of applying makeup can be just as, if not more important. This thesis acts as the theoretical basis for my digital art project, Facing the World. My work gives insight into the lesser understood motivations behind wearing makeup while shedding the stigma that wearing it is merely a superficial act or sign of vanity. The project Facing the World presents the makeup routines and personal narratives of seven women to uncover the me

Abstract:
The contemporary media landscape invites us to experience a belonging to various distant places, mourn the victims of faraway disasters, expose ourselves to foreign cultures and engage in political issues in places far from our local context of living. In other words, we are invited to become citizens of the world – cosmopolitans. But are we? And if so, how is such cosmopolitanism expressed in a given society, under what social conditions, and in relation to what media practices? Contemporary social theory depicts a global or cosmopolitan mode of orienting in the world as paradigmatic of socia

This thesis identifies, analyzes and develops the notion of a system as a model for artistic practice and intervention. First developed within General Systems Theory and concepts associated with Cybernetics, the idea of an 'open system' is based on the premise that we should not be concerned with how parts of a system act, as isolated events, but on the multiple behaviour and responses of a system as a 'whole'. The 'open system' model therefore challenges the reduction of a system to its component parts, as in the reductive methods of science, as well as the fixed state of a 'closed systems' m

Abstract:
The most important problems in the philosophy of quantum mechanics are the problem of measurement and the problem of the 'acausal' EPR correlations. It is commonly thought that these problems call for a new interpretation of the quantum theory. I argue that it is possible to construe both problems rather differently, as resulting from a mistaken understanding of scientific theory-application. It then becomes possible to tackle both problems independently of questions of interpretation, by attending carefully to what constitutes a successful application of a scientific theory, and of the quantu

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to provide an analysis of the major arias and ensembles of Jody Nagel's Fifty-Third Street for performance practice, drawing upon a case study of the premiere. The opera Fifty-Third Street was composed in 1992 by Nagel for his dissertation project at the University of Texas at Austin. The librettist is Seth Wolitz, then a University of Texas faculty member. The opera examines the lives of two homeless men on 53rd Street in New York City, between 5th and 6th Streets, and the reactions toward them from various facets of society, including the church, art institution
