Abstract:
This project involves a failure analysis of the internal structural collapse that occurred in World Trade Center 5 (WTC 5) due to fire exposure alone on September 11, 2001. It is hypothesized that the steel column-tree assembly failed during the heating phase of the fire. The results of this research have serious and far-reaching implications, for this method of construction is utilized in approximately 20,000 existing buildings and continues to be very popular. Catastrophic failure during the heating phase of a fire would endanger the lives of firefighters and building occupants undergoing extended egress times (e.g., high-rise buildings), or relying upon defend-in-place strategies (e.g., hospitals). Computer software was used to reconstruct the fire event and predict the structural performance of the assembly when exposed to the fire. Results from a finite element, thermal-stress model confirms this hypothesis, for it is concluded that the catastrophic, progressive structural collapse occurred approximately 2 hours into the fire exposure.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 brought about the destruction of two symbols of American economic strength, the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. These towers remained standing for some time after the initial aircraft impact, allowing many occupants to escape, but eventually collapsed to the ground. Much research has been done to determine the precise mechanisms of collapse, but there is not yet a consensus. This thesis explores and summarizes the leading theories to date, with particular emphasis on the ongoing research by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Several ideas for improving building performance and for preventing progressive collapse are also presented.

An estimation of the energy yielded from the explosion created by the crash of United Flight 175 into the World Trade Center was conducted to rule out the possibility of other explosive elements (i.e. a bomb) on board. The amount of fuel ignited and the corresponding energy yielded by the fireball was estimated by studying videotapes of the crashes. The calculated volume of fuel vapor, which is consumed to form the fireball, is a fraction of the estimated total fuel aboard the plane upon impact. Due to thermal expansion, the fuel vapor quickly expands forming a high fuel/air mixture and ignites. The energy yield from combustion estimated from the videos using maximum rise height and burning time corresponds with a rough initial estimate of the energy yield using a fraction of the volume of fuel estimated on board the plane at impact. A conservative estimate of the energy released by TNT explosives is significantly less than the energy yielded by the jet fuel aboard the plane. Therefore, the presence of explosives on the plane is highly unlikely. In addition, although a bomb would not contribute significantly to the energy yielded, it is hypothesized that one could have been used to ensure that the fuel ignited after impact. This would also be unnecessary because the material properties of the fuel makes ignition almost certain. Recommendations for future studies are to develop methods of flying that have lower energy potential, to examine how a plane breaks apart during impact, and to prevent ignition of jet fuel when released.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT

“Crisis Management– New York Citys management of the terroristattack against World Trade Center”

Essey in political science, C-level, at Karlstad University, by Sara Kringsberg.

Spring 2006. Tutor: Susan Marton

The purpose of this essay is to study New York Citys management of a larger crisis and to see how states are coping with stress. It is important to study how states manage stress so that states can learn to cope with larger crisis. That is important for the survival of the state and the protection of its citizens. David Easton is a political science author that write about this. There are four authorities under study in this essey and the following question will be poised for all of them : did the FDNY, the NYPD, the EMS and the PAPD manage the terroristattack against World Trade Center according to relevant crisis management?

This essay will be in the form of a case study and to be able to answer the specific questions I have studied three kinds of crisis management theories. I have taken some of the most central points from these theorys and used them to study the response of the different departements of New York City. The result of my study is that the different authorities did not act according to relevant crisis management. The biggest flaws where the lack of cooperation, the break down in almost all communications systems and the lack of preperation for large terroristattacks.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The push to design environmentally conscious and sustainable buildings has surged over the past twenty year, thus leading to the development of new methods for harnessing the natural elements of the earth. In recent years the international firm of Kohn, Pederson and Fox has been a champion of the sustainability movement. In fact many of the newer passive ventilation strategies under development can be seen in Kohn, Pedersen Fox International (KPFI) current commission for the World Trade Center (WTC) currently under construction in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This multi-million square foot complex has been designed to service the growing needs of Europe's free market economy and the fledgling European Union (EU). The complex is a series of five towers with connecting multi-storied atriums in the interstitial spaces. While the towers are actively heated and cooled using modern energy efficient systems the atrium areas are ventilated using an innovative passive system. This passive system relies on turbulence and negative pressure along the roof system to draw air through the space and positive pressure (due to wind driven forces) at the inlets located above the ground level doors to bring air into the atrium. The primary concept behind this strategy is that the difference between the positive and negative pressure zones will induce a convective current within the atrium space and there by create a continuous air-change system. The intent of this thesis is to analyze and report on the findings of the wind tunnel tests done on scale models of the complex and, propose alternative ideas to strengthen the current design.

This thesis will apply the past research and methodologies of Real Options to Tower 2 and Tower 3 of the World Trade Center redevelopment project in New York, NY. The qualitative component of the thesis investigates the history behind the stalled development of Towers 2 and 3 and examines a potential contingency that could have mitigated the market risk. The quantitative component builds upon that story and creates a hypothetical Real Options case as a framework for applying and valuing building use flexibility in a large-scale, politically charged, real estate development project. Through this demonstration, it is observed that applying Real Options "in" the World Trade Center Towers 2 and 3 projects minimizes losses in weaker markets and maximizes gains in stronger markets.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 were a national tragedy. Communities across the United States and internationally both directly and indirectly affected by the terrorist attacks are in debate about how to appropriately memorialize such catastrophic events and loss of life. This thesis focuses on the response in New York City to remember and rebuild at the World Trade Center site. This thesis explores spontaneous public responses to the events of September 11th by individuals, victims' families groups and civic organizations that claim a stake in the memorialization and rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. During the first several months following the terrorist strikes, the absence of an inclusive decision-making process for remembrance and rebuilding at the World Trade Center site produced conflicts between stakeholders, particularly victims' families, and New York decision-makers. To illustrate this tension between remembrance and rebuilding, this thesis discusses the "temporary memorial" development in New York City in March 2002 and the PATH train and site rebuilding disagreements that escalated during April 2002. Traditional decision-making processes maintain the public voice at a distance from the decisionmaking powers. Elected and appointed officials arbitrate public voices that are restricted in advisory roles and produce final decisions. As an alternative, consensus building involves a range of stakeholders in decision-making roles. A consensus building process would earn civic endorsement, lead to a durable outcome and would capture this unprecedented opportunity for grieving participants and witnesses to engage in a planning process. The thesis argues that the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, the state-city agency convened by New York Governor George Pataki to oversee development of Lower Manhattan and the WTC site, could convene a consensus building process. The process would provide neutral facilitation and management of stakeholders who select representatives for an open and ongoing dialogue about such contentious issues as sacred ground, rebuilding, memorialization, and economic recovery. A consensus building process is an inclusive conversation that could reach agreement on a plan of action for the rebuilding and memorialization on the WTC site. This process would recognize the rebuilding of the WTC site as one of the greatest planning projects in New York history. The process would embrace the diversity and number of stakeholders, the destruction and trauma on the site witnessed world-wide and the challenge of achieving agreement on a technically complex site in the center of one of the world's leading financial marketplaces.

Abstract:
This study briefly examined the terrorist attacks that occurred between the first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 and the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that occurred on September 11, 2001. Specifically, this study examines the reactions of the public and press to the attacks on the military barracks in Riyadh, the bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Zambia and Kenya, and the attack on the U.S.S Cole in Yemen. This study examines the effect public opinion had on the President and Congress and their reactions to the public pressure. The primary purpose of this thesis is to briefly examine the reactions of Presidents and Congress to the attacks on Americans at home and abroad, and that effect on their efforts to prevent further attacks on the United States. Did the President use his office to activate and motivate public officials and the public to the dangers of terrorist attacks? Was the public effective in persuading Congress to enact legislation to increase funding for terrorist prevention? And, how effective was the press in its role to educate and define the issues surrounding terrorist attacks on Americans.

Additionally, research has shown that geographic proximity to a traumatic event plays a role in identifying those with increased psychological distress. Oneâ s subjective experience of a traumatic event, and in particular, oneâ s perception of threat to life, also appears to be important in the identification of those in need. Moreover, understanding the psychological effects of individuals who have experienced a traumatic event is essential to the effective screening and identification of those in need of mental health services. As such, the purpose of this study was to examine the ability of geographic exposure and the perceived life threat to predict psychological outcomes in parents and their young children following the World Trade Center attacks in New York City. Additionally, the moderational roles of race/ethnicity and socio-economic status were also examined. Neither maternal geographic exposure nor perception of life threat significantly predicted mental health outcomes in mothers or their young children. However, socio-economic status significantly moderated the relationship between maternal geographic exposure and childrenâ s externalizing behaviors. Finally, the effect of race/ethnicity approached significance for maternal PTSD symptoms; however, no significant moderation was found.

The purpose of this paper is to examine popular cultures impact on the social and collective memory in the post 9/11 era, more specific visual medias reconstruction of the traumatic event of September 11, 2001. The movies that will be in the center of this paper is World Trade Center (2006) produced by Oliver Stone and Zero Dark Thirty (2012) by Kathryn Bigelow. This paper will argue that the movie World Trade Center and Zero Dark Thirty is maintaining and reproducing the ideological discourses set by the Bush-administration after the events of September 11. The result of the investigated movies is that they are characterized by “we against the other” perspective and is reproducing stereotypes that will function as a mean to exclusion of minority’s. This is linked to the social and the collective memory. Where social and collective identities define, who belongs or not.

C-uppsats kandidat 2011 Title: Media – terroristens medhjälpare? Författare: Christoffer Wiklöw Språk: svenska Instution: JMK, Stockholm Universitet   En kvalitativ studie om New York Times språkbruk kring terrorism.

Abstract:
On September 11, 2001, the United States was the victim of unprecedented terrorist attacks. Two of the four hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, which eventually collapsed before the eyes of millions of incredulous spectators. That event has been the most photographed ever. This thesis studies the multiple artistic answers to the events of 9/11 in New York and is an overview of artistic productions born after that day. Focused on presenting images, it aims at showing the different motives of 9/11's imagery, the challenge for artists being to gather the force of testimonies as well as the aesthetic power of the press images. This thesis aims at underlining the different functions of art in an unfavorable context : art as a form of catharsis, testimony, experience ; art as a form of mourning and healing ; art as a means of giving sense to reality and recovering from trauma ; or as a means of giving access to emotions or tragic visions. It is also an extensive inventory of artistic productions inspired by 9/11 in New York

Abstract:
The topic of this dissertation is the aspects of trauma and reaction to the traumatic experience that can be found in 9/11 literature. The research engages in a comparative analysis of five books that can be categorised as 9/11 literature, which means that the events of 9/11 are central in the novels and are a recurrent theme. The books have been written by authors of different nationalities: "Extremely Loud & Incredibily Close" by J. S. Foer, "Falling Man" by D. DeLillo, "Windows on the World" by F. Beigbeder, "Saturday" by I. McEwan and "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" by M. Hamid. The characters have either experienced the attacks personally or their lives have been largely influenced by the event. In either case, the protagonist has been traumatised by the tragedy. Therefore, in this study two different fields are fused together – the field of comparative literature and that of trauma studies.

Abstract:
Since 1814, when the first researches on the topic were carried out, variable mass system mechanics has become a particular branch within classical mechanics. Applied problems involving variable mass systems are sparsely distributed over a wide range of different areas of knowledge, and go from engineering to medicine, for example. However, despite these successful applications, even today one can find in the specialized literature discussions on the fundamentals of the variable mass system mechanics. In this scenario, apparent paradoxes, which are based on different equations of motion for a same variable mass system, figure out. In this sense, the Wagners problem, in the context of the study of the impact of solid bodies into liquid surfaces, and the falling chain problem can be cited as didactic examples. In this thesis, topics like this one will be treated. However, the main scope of this work is to present a more general and interpretative discussion on both the theory and application of the mechanics of variable mass systems, but keeping the focus on contributions that enable a better understanding of such an important branch of mechanics. For that, original theoretical results will be presented, as also discussions and applications of them. In the beginning, a discussion on the first fundamental works about the dynamics of a variable mass particle is done. In such a context, original interpretations of this author are pointed out. Then, the application of Lagrange equations on variable mass systems is discussed. In this scenario, this author shows the so-called Lagrange equation for a control volume where mass varies with generalized coordinates and velocities. This is also an original result of this thesis. By the end, an extension of a variational principle to a control volume is shown, also an original result of this work. Two classical problems within the theory of variable mass systems are then treated, i.e. the falling chain problem and the Wagners problems. Both are apparently paradoxical problems. The resolution of such apparent paradoxes is addressed, what is also an original result. Within the present context of the mechanics of variable mass systems, a brief discussion on the problem of the collapse of the World Trade Center twin towers is also done.

Abstract:
The tragic and devastating September 11 attacks resulted in a variety of original musical responses. Exemplary works expressed their reactions through overt 9/11-concentric dialogues to express themes of mourning, military retribution, dissent and commemoration. An examination of such works concludes that effective musical responses express a direct message clarified by supporting musical and/or textual materials. Musical materials can accentuate the specific thematic message of the responsive work as they often evoke images and emotions reminiscent of the attacks and their aftermath. Compositional techniques used in these works are often reminiscent of historical works written in similar circumstances. The recurrence of these historical approaches illuminates the timeless compositional design of historical examples and exemplifies modern advancements in music composition and production. A comparison between classical and popular post-9/11 musical compositions concludes that certain classical and popular genres deal with responsive themes more effectively than others. A recommendation for further study is enclosed.

Full text
Abstract:
Al Qaeda killings, posttraumatic stress, and the Gothic together triangulate a sizable space in recent American fiction that is still largely uncharted by critics. This thesis maps that shared territory in four novels written between 2005 and 2007 by writers who were born in America, and whose protagonists are the survivors in New York City after the World Trade Center falls. Published in the city of their tragedy and reviewed in its media, the novels surveyed here include Don DeLillo’s _Falling Man_ (2007), Jonathan Safran Foer’s _Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close_ (2005), Lynne Sharon Schwartz’s _The Writing on the Wall_ (2005), and Jess Walter’s _The Zero_ (2006). The thesis issues a challenge to the large number of negative and dismissive reviews of the novels under consideration, making a case that under different criteria, shaped by trauma theory and psychoanalysis, the novels succeed after all in making readers feel what it was to be alive in September 2001, enduring the posttraumatic stress for months and years later. The thesis asserts that 9/11 fiction is too commonly presented in popular journals and scholarly studies as an undifferentiated mass. In the same critical piece a journalist or an academic may evaluate narratives in which unfold a terrorist's point of view, a surviving or a dying New York City victim's perspective, and an outsider's reaction set thousands of miles away from Ground Zero. What this thesis argues for is a separation in study of the fictive strands that meditate on the burning towers, treating the New York City survivor story as a discrete body. Despite their being set in one of the most known cities of the Western world, and the terrorist attack that they depict being the most- watched catastrophe ever experienced in real-time before, these fictions have not yet been critically ordered. Charting the salient reappearing conflicts, unsettling descriptions, protagonist decay, and potent techniques for registering horror that resurface in this New York City 9/11 fiction, this thesis proposes and demonstrates how the peculiar and affecting Gothic tensions in the works can be further understood by trauma theory, a term coined by Cathy Caruth in Unclaimed Experience (1996: 72). Though the thesis concentrates on developments in trauma theory from the mid 1990s to 2015, it also addresses its theoretical antecedents: from the earliest voices in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that linked mental illness to a trauma (Charcot, Janet, Breuer, Freud), to researchers from mid-twentieth century (Adler, Lindemann) who studied how catastrophe affects civilian minds not previously trained to either fight war or withstand cataclysm. Always keeping at the fore the ancient Greek double-meaning of trauma as both unhealing “wound” and “defeat,” the thesis surveys tenets of the trauma theorists from the very first of those who studied the effects on civilian survivors of disaster (of what is still the largest nightclub fire in U.S. history, which replaced front page coverage of World War II for a few days: the Cocoanut Grove blaze in Boston, 1942) up to those theorists writing in 2015. The concepts evolving behind trauma theory, this thesis demonstrates, provide a useful mechanism to discuss the surprising yearnings hiding behind the appearance of doppelgängers, possession ghosts, terrorists as monsters, empty coffins, and visitants that appear to feed on characters’ sorrow, guilt, and loneliness within the novels under discussion. This thesis reappraises the dominant idea in trauma studies of the mid-1990s, namely that trauma victims often cannot fully remember and articulate their physical and psychic wounds. The argument here is that, true to the theories of the Caruthian school, the victims in these novels may not remember and express their trauma completely and in a linear fashion. However, the victims figured in these novels do relate the horrors of their memory to a degree by letting their narration erupt with the unexpectedly Gothic images, tropes, visions, language, and typical contradictions, aporias, lacunae, and paradoxes. The Gothic, one might say, becomes the language in which trauma speaks and articulates itself, albeit not always in the most cogent of signs. One might easily dismiss these fleeting Gothic presences that characters conjure in the fictions under consideration as anomalous apparitions signalling nothing. However, this thesis interrogates these ghostly traces of Gothicism to find what secrets they hold. Working from the insights of psychoanalysis and its post-Freudian re-inventers and challengers, it aims to puzzle out the dimensions of characters’ mourning in its “traumagothic” reading of the texts. Characters’ use of the Gothic becomes their way of remembering, a coded language to the curious. This thesis holds that unexpressed grief and guilt are the large constant in this grouping of novels. Characters’ grief articulation and guilt release, or the desire for symbolic amnesia, take paths that the figures often were suspicious of before 9/11: a return to organized religion, a belief in spirits, a call for vengeance, psychotherapy, substance abuse, splitting with a partner, rampant sex with nearby strangers, torture of suspects, and killing. All the earnest attempts through the above means by the characters to express grief, vent rage, and alleviate survivor guilt do so without noticeable success. True closure towards their trauma is largely a myth. No reliable evidence surfaces from the close reading of the texts that those affected by trauma ever fully recover. However, as this thesis demonstrates, other forms of recompense come from these searches for elusive peace and the nostalgic longing for the America that has been lost to them.

Abstract:
Nine-eleven attacks in the United States are a "limiting" event, unfinished in reality, in time, the are synonymous of rupture and brutal change. The mediatization in urgency, generated by the unexpected character of the drama, influences the devices and the processes of social circulation of knowledge on the event. The informational uses are here in the center of knowledge relating to the event, the give him an interpretative framwork. We chose to analyze the tramsmission of information relating to the attacks in a semiopragmatic way. The construction od media speech on the event, more particularly on television and the french press (nearly 2000 analyzed documents), is in the middle of our concerns. By the installation of a simultaneous speech, the media play the part of creative filters of stereotypes and mental representations and thus contribute to the construction of representations of reality. Our analyses enable us to account for the communication activities in an urgently informational situation. Indeed, in front of the suddenness of the facts, the diffusion of information is innovative, the research of the scoop and the entry of the media in a competition logic leads to a redefinition of information in times of crisis. The mediatization, strongly anchored in this communication of crisis, is a mode of collective regulation. It builds a collective memory and common facts lived to international, and allows to insert the event in a "historical present"

RSSI fingerprinting-based localization technique is widely used for indoor localization because it could capture obstruction and multipath effect, which are commonly seen in indoor signal propagation, as unique feature for each location. Unlike testbeds, there are usually various constraints in the real world environment and the accuracy of location estimations may be reduced indirectly due to some factors limited by them while using RSSI fingerprinting-based technique. Therefore, we implemented a flash deployment of RSSI fingerprinting-based indoor localization system at World Trade Center (WTC) exhibition hall 3 for 5 days only to verify the feasibility of it in the real world environment. In this work, we shared our practical experience of flash deployment firstly. It includes the detail descriptions of the used hardware and the implemented localization mechanisms followed by the evaluations of them. Secondly, the challenges and limits of flash deployment at WTC are well discussed. In addition, the evaluations of the effects of them on the accuracy are presented and the possible improvements are proposed. The result indicates that the error distance of the indoor localization system deployed at WTC is 9.01m at 80th percentile with the most accurate localization mechanism among the ones we discussed. Beacon placement limit, time and space limit, environmental change challenge, and signal variation challenge are the four challenges and limits for flash deployment at WTC. Among these, signal variation introduces the most error distance. Thus, the possible improvements to it, using other kinds of fingerprint in addition to RSSI and using Bayesian filter, may be the most effective ways to improve the accuracy of location estimations for flash deployment of RSSI fingerprinting-based indoor localization system.

Rogers, Paul F. "Losing Control: Global Security in the Twenty-first Century." 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/6264.

Full text
Abstract:
'Losing Control combines a glimpse behind the security screens with sharp analysis of the real global insecurities - growing inequality and unsustainability.' The New Internationalist The attacks in New York and Washington on 11th September 2001 took most of the world by surprise. It showed that, for those living in the West, the threat of terrorist attack is now very real. Maintaining control of global security has become a matter of paramount importance to all Western governments. As the war against 'terrorism' widens into a war against particular states who may have played little part in the disaster, the idea that we can maintain global security by desperately clinging to our current security paradigm becomes increasingly improbable. In Losing Control, Paul Rogers calls for a radical re-thinking of western perceptions of security that embraces a willingness to address the core issues of global insecurity. This acclaimed book has already become an essential guide for anyone who wishes to understand the current crisis, and this updated edition contains a new preface and a new chapter which address the specific problems that have arisen since the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Drawing on examples from around the world, Rogers analyses the legacy of the Cold War's proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; the impact of human activity on the global ecosystem; the growth of hypercapitalism and resulting poverty and insecurity; the competition for energy resources and strategic minerals; biological warfare programmes; and paramilitary actions against centres of power. The new edition brings the whole analysis right up to date, arguing persuasively that the world's elite cannot maintain control and that a far more emancipatory and sustainable approach to global security has to be developed.

Teasdale, Mathieu.

Abstract:
Thinking space narrative helps circulate in the margins of those of art, literature, politics, film. The rhetorical analysis of space narratives and its storytelling process shows, in three stages, that architectural contribution defines and redefines the possibilities of movement of speech in their opening or closing. First, the transition from modernism to postmodernism, by the analysis of Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, which deconstructs the programmatic narrative of an order allows a new performativity of reality. Secondly, the monumentality of Lower Manhattan, by its verticality, presents its narrative process set as a palimpsest where all traces, ideas, practices, utopias and destruction are legitimizing and criticizing elements in the narratives being written. By passing its representation in literature, in particular, the verticality is then a leakage whose upward movement, then down, shows the incompleteness of the story. Last, the building of the World Trade Center Memorial, re-entered into a unitary discursive model understood as a wide dispositif that reaffirms a return to an order of discourse, a political age memory. This space is one of the pilgrimage, the sacred place which makes his dead speak on behalf of an authority, which withhold the possibility of speech form outside. This reflection intends to present those spaces which are put in narrative.
