The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 brought about the destruction of two symbols of American economic strength, the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. These towers remained standing for some time after the initial aircraft impact, allowing many occupants to escape, but eventually collapsed to the ground. Much research has been done to determine the precise mechanisms of collapse, but there is not yet a consensus. This thesis explores and summarizes the leading theories to date, with particular emphasis on the ongoing research by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Several ideas for improving building performance and for preventing progressive collapse are also presented.

An estimation of the energy yielded from the explosion created by the crash of United Flight 175 into the World Trade Center was conducted to rule out the possibility of other explosive elements (i.e. a bomb) on board. The amount of fuel ignited and the corresponding energy yielded by the fireball was estimated by studying videotapes of the crashes. The calculated volume of fuel vapor, which is consumed to form the fireball, is a fraction of the estimated total fuel aboard the plane upon impact. Due to thermal expansion, the fuel vapor quickly expands forming a high fuel/air mixture and ignites. The energy yield from combustion estimated from the videos using maximum rise height and burning time corresponds with a rough initial estimate of the energy yield using a fraction of the volume of fuel estimated on board the plane at impact. A conservative estimate of the energy released by TNT explosives is significantly less than the energy yielded by the jet fuel aboard the plane. Therefore, the presence of explosives on the plane is highly unlikely. In addition, although a bomb would not contribute significantly to the energy yielded, it is hypothesized that one could have been used to ensure that the fuel ignited after impact. This would also be unnecessary because the material properties of the fuel makes ignition almost certain. Recommendations for future studies are to develop methods of flying that have lower energy potential, to examine how a plane breaks apart during impact, and to prevent ignition of jet fuel when released.

“Crisis Management– New York Citys management of the terroristattack against World Trade Center”
Essey in political science, C-level, at Karlstad University, by Sara Kringsberg.
Spring 2006. Tutor: Susan Marton
The purpose of this essay is to study New York Citys management of a larger crisis and to see how states are coping with stress. It is important to study how states manage stress so that states can learn to cope with larger crisis. That is important for the survival of the state and the protection of its citizens. David Easton is a political science author that write about this. There are four authorities under study in this essey and the following question will be poised for all of them : did the FDNY, the NYPD, the EMS and the PAPD manage the terroristattack against World Trade Center according to relevant crisis management?
This essay will be in the form of a case study and to be able to answer the specific questions I have studied three kinds of crisis management theories. I have taken some of the most central points from these theorys and used them to study the response of the different departements of New York City. The result of my study is that the different authorities did not act according to relevant crisis management. The biggest flaws where the lack of cooperation, the break down in almost all communications systems and the lack of preperation for large terroristattacks.

This thesis will apply the past research and methodologies of Real Options to Tower 2 and Tower 3 of the World Trade Center redevelopment project in New York, NY. The qualitative component of the thesis investigates the history behind the stalled development of Towers 2 and 3 and examines a potential contingency that could have mitigated the market risk. The quantitative component builds upon that story and creates a hypothetical Real Options case as a framework for applying and valuing building use flexibility in a large-scale, politically charged, real estate development project. Through this demonstration, it is observed that applying Real Options "in" the World Trade Center Towers 2 and 3 projects minimizes losses in weaker markets and maximizes gains in stronger markets.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 were a national tragedy. Communities across the United States and internationally both directly and indirectly affected by the terrorist attacks are in debate about how to appropriately memorialize such catastrophic events and loss of life. This thesis focuses on the response in New York City to remember and rebuild at the World Trade Center site. This thesis explores spontaneous public responses to the events of September 11th by individuals, victims' families groups and civic organizations that claim a stake in the memorialization and rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. During the first several months following the terrorist strikes, the absence of an inclusive decision-making process for remembrance and rebuilding at the World Trade Center site produced conflicts between stakeholders, particularly victims' families, and New York decision-makers. To illustrate this tension between remembrance and rebuilding, this thesis discusses the "temporary memorial" development in New York City in March 2002 and the PATH train and site rebuilding disagreements that escalated during April 2002. Traditional decision-making processes maintain the public voice at a distance from the decisionmaking powers. Elected and appointed officials arbitrate public voices that are restricted in advisory roles and produce final decisions. As an alternative, consensus building involves a range of stakeholders in decision-making roles. A consensus building process would earn civic endorsement, lead to a durable outcome and would capture this unprecedented opportunity for grieving participants and witnesses to engage in a planning process. The thesis argues that the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, the state-city agency convened by New York Governor George Pataki to oversee development of Lower Manhattan and the WTC site, could convene a consensus building process. The process would provide neutral facilitation and management of stakeholders who select representatives for an open and ongoing dialogue about such contentious issues as sacred ground, rebuilding, memorialization, and economic recovery. A consensus building process is an inclusive conversation that could reach agreement on a plan of action for the rebuilding and memorialization on the WTC site. This process would recognize the rebuilding of the WTC site as one of the greatest planning projects in New York history. The process would embrace the diversity and number of stakeholders, the destruction and trauma on the site witnessed world-wide and the challenge of achieving agreement on a technically complex site in the center of one of the world's leading financial marketplaces.

Full textOn September 11, 2001, the United States was the victim of unprecedented terrorist attacks. Two of the four hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, which eventually collapsed before the eyes of millions of incredulous spectators. That event has been the most photographed ever. This thesis studies the multiple artistic answers to the events of 9/11 in New York and is an overview of artistic productions born after that day. Focused on presenting images, it aims at showing the different motives of 9/11's imagery, the challenge for artists being to gather the force of testimonies as well as the aesthetic power of the press images. This thesis aims at underlining the different functions of art in an unfavorable context : art as a form of catharsis, testimony, experience ; art as a form of mourning and healing ; art as a means of giving sense to reality and recovering from trauma ; or as a means of giving access to emotions or tragic visions. It is also an extensive inventory of artistic productions inspired by 9/11 in New York

Full textSince 1814, when the first researches on the topic were carried out, variable mass system mechanics has become a particular branch within classical mechanics. Applied problems involving variable mass systems are sparsely distributed over a wide range of different areas of knowledge, and go from engineering to medicine, for example. However, despite these successful applications, even today one can find in the specialized literature discussions on the fundamentals of the variable mass system mechanics. In this scenario, apparent paradoxes, which are based on different equations of motion for a same variable mass system, figure out. In this sense, the Wagners problem, in the context of the study of the impact of solid bodies into liquid surfaces, and the falling chain problem can be cited as didactic examples. In this thesis, topics like this one will be treated. However, the main scope of this work is to present a more general and interpretative discussion on both the theory and application of the mechanics of variable mass systems, but keeping the focus on contributions that enable a better understanding of such an important branch of mechanics. For that, original theoretical results will be presented, as also discussions and applications of them. In the beginning, a discussion on the first fundamental works about the dynamics of a variable mass particle is done. In such a context, original interpretations of this author are pointed out. Then, the application of Lagrange equations on variable mass systems is discussed. In this scenario, this author shows the so-called Lagrange equation for a control volume where mass varies with generalized coordinates and velocities. This is also an original result of this thesis. By the end, an extension of a variational principle to a control volume is shown, also an original result of this work. Two classical problems within the theory of variable mass systems are then treated, i.e. the falling chain problem and the Wagners problems. Both are apparently paradoxical problems. The resolution of such apparent paradoxes is addressed, what is also an original result. Within the present context of the mechanics of variable mass systems, a brief discussion on the problem of the collapse of the World Trade Center twin towers is also done.

Full textNine-eleven attacks in the United States are a "limiting" event, unfinished in reality, in time, the are synonymous of rupture and brutal change. The mediatization in urgency, generated by the unexpected character of the drama, influences the devices and the processes of social circulation of knowledge on the event. The informational uses are here in the center of knowledge relating to the event, the give him an interpretative framwork. We chose to analyze the tramsmission of information relating to the attacks in a semiopragmatic way. The construction od media speech on the event, more particularly on television and the french press (nearly 2000 analyzed documents), is in the middle of our concerns. By the installation of a simultaneous speech, the media play the part of creative filters of stereotypes and mental representations and thus contribute to the construction of representations of reality. Our analyses enable us to account for the communication activities in an urgently informational situation. Indeed, in front of the suddenness of the facts, the diffusion of information is innovative, the research of the scoop and the entry of the media in a competition logic leads to a redefinition of information in times of crisis. The mediatization, strongly anchored in this communication of crisis, is a mode of collective regulation. It builds a collective memory and common facts lived to international, and allows to insert the event in a "historical present"

RSSI fingerprinting-based localization technique is widely used for indoor localization because it could capture obstruction and multipath effect, which are commonly seen in indoor signal propagation, as unique feature for each location. Unlike testbeds, there are usually various constraints in the real world environment and the accuracy of location estimations may be reduced indirectly due to some factors limited by them while using RSSI fingerprinting-based technique. Therefore, we implemented a flash deployment of RSSI fingerprinting-based indoor localization system at World Trade Center (WTC) exhibition hall 3 for 5 days only to verify the feasibility of it in the real world environment. In this work, we shared our practical experience of flash deployment firstly. It includes the detail descriptions of the used hardware and the implemented localization mechanisms followed by the evaluations of them. Secondly, the challenges and limits of flash deployment at WTC are well discussed. In addition, the evaluations of the effects of them on the accuracy are presented and the possible improvements are proposed. The result indicates that the error distance of the indoor localization system deployed at WTC is 9.01m at 80th percentile with the most accurate localization mechanism among the ones we discussed. Beacon placement limit, time and space limit, environmental change challenge, and signal variation challenge are the four challenges and limits for flash deployment at WTC. Among these, signal variation introduces the most error distance. Thus, the possible improvements to it, using other kinds of fingerprint in addition to RSSI and using Bayesian filter, may be the most effective ways to improve the accuracy of location estimations for flash deployment of RSSI fingerprinting-based indoor localization system.

In Taiwan, the thematic exhibition is increasing frequency those years, from the beginning of the home appliances exhibition; Furniture, to recently food fair; Comic Con, and the subject of this study - computer exhibitions…etc. Exhibition exactly brought huge crowds and business opportunities in the market. Base on product features and market situation to design the suitable marketing plan and on demand sales kit for customers, exhibition becoming the major platform to communicate with end users to get the maximum voice and exposure in the market. This study is not only taking Taipei World Trade Center – the major and the biggest exhibition center in Taiwan as the role model; but also reference from people’s fair actual participation experience as my analysis source. To use customer’s expectation to define the market segmentation; the structure factors then cluster analysis to differentiate the consumer and the consumer segment after multivariate cluster analysis, chi-square test was used to investigate the cluster of all segments of consumer behavior in the demographic variables and variables on the differences, to understand Among the three segments of the consumer characteristics, marketing strategy for the layout of the reference. In my study results showed that the consumer can be expected by exhibition and separate the interests of effective market segmentation in variables : 『emotion cluster』『fashion professional players』, and『shopping clusters』, each cluster between demographic variables, sources of information and consumer behavior significantly associated. My marketing recommendations for these three clusters are as follows:『emotion cluster』should strengthen staff training and service processes, improve customer satisfaction, with low or promotional strategies to enhance consumer willing; 『fashion professional players』should be the most popular cluster , demand for higher quality products to meet the value-added features strategies, such as hire purchase, to stimulate consumer desire for this cluster; 『shopping clusters』despite their low desire, but can participate in activities through their high level of interest design a series of publicity activities to create a sense of crowds to attract other consumers.

Full textThinking space narrative helps circulate in the margins of those of art, literature, politics, film. The rhetorical analysis of space narratives and its storytelling process shows, in three stages, that architectural contribution defines and redefines the possibilities of movement of speech in their opening or closing. First, the transition from modernism to postmodernism, by the analysis of Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, which deconstructs the programmatic narrative of an order allows a new performativity of reality. Secondly, the monumentality of Lower Manhattan, by its verticality, presents its narrative process set as a palimpsest where all traces, ideas, practices, utopias and destruction are legitimizing and criticizing elements in the narratives being written. By passing its representation in literature, in particular, the verticality is then a leakage whose upward movement, then down, shows the incompleteness of the story. Last, the building of the World Trade Center Memorial, re-entered into a unitary discursive model understood as a wide dispositif that reaffirms a return to an order of discourse, a political age memory. This space is one of the pilgrimage, the sacred place which makes his dead speak on behalf of an authority, which withhold the possibility of speech form outside. This reflection intends to present those spaces which are put in narrative.
