Full textA 4 channel video installation. Size on screens: 136 x 76 cm. Duration on video: 17 min. In a defenceless condition we enter a room. And they in us. All of the rooms. Sure, there are differences. Though it is not important here, not anymore anyway. It is not important, when you will not remember why you walked into the room to begin with. What got you to enter, and why do you stay. Moments that extends infinitely in time, expands and pushes away the oxygen in the room, like the last to experience before death is this strange, anaerobe environment. Two people are sitting in a room that changes looks six times. They are waiting, but no one knows what they are waiting for. While waiting they start to confess to each other, but never directly. In stead they try to explain and apologize their action without ever mentioning what the actions were.

Objective: To verify the influence of the sustained auditory attention ability in the results of the central auditory processing conventional tests of students from a public school of São Paulo. Method: Observational and transversal clinical study were carried out in 49 children without any hearing loss (29 of the male and 20 females of nine years old). For the evaluation, the following tests were used: audiometry tonal and vocal, measurements of acoustic imitância, test of the ability of sustained auditory attention (THAAS), Speech test with Noise (TFR), Monótica and Dicótica Listening test with sentence identification (SSI), digit Dicótico test (TDD), masking differential threshold (MLD), Gaps in Noise (GIN), frequency pattern (PPS) and duration pattern test (DPS). Results: Of the total sample, 27 (55.1%) children presented normal results in all procedures (THAAS and central auditory processing tests) while (22 – 44.9%) showed change in at least one of the tests. The test that presented the largest number of altered cases was the THAAS (14-29%) followed by the integration TDD test (8-16.3%). In the THAAS test, the analysis of the total errors identified 35 (71%) with responses within the normality standards for age and 14 (29%) with non-compliant responses, being seven (50%) of the male gender and seven (50%) of the female. Statistically significant differences between THAAS and gender results were not observed. In the Association test Qui-square using the result of total errors of the THAAS as an outcome (normal and altered category) showed evidence of association with the tests TDD integration (P = 0.020) and TDD separation (P = 0.007). For the result of the THAAS divided into three categories (≤ 5, from 6 to 26 and ≥ 27), associations were observed with the tests TDD integration, TDD separation and MLD (P-values equal to 0.044, 0.025 and 0.027, respectively). Conclusions: The ability of sustained auditory attention has been associated with both the hearing ability of a background for verbal sounds and the ability of binaural interaction. There is also evidence of the influence of the auditory attention sustained in the results of some tests used to evaluate the cap. A criteria for the use of the test is necessary due to the fact that its demand differ among the central auditory processing tests

Full textThe U.S. has witnessed growing inequality, decreasing wages, and increasing instability in work over the past several decades (Krugman, 2012; Stiglitz, 2015). Moreover, evidence demonstrating work’s impact on well-being is expansive, as is its role in upward mobility and maintaining systemic oppression (Blustein, 2006; 2008; Swanson, 2012). Despite this breadth of research, studies rarely attend to community factors that shape opportunity for accessing work. As such, the present study sought to better understand relationships among individuals’ economic resources and work-related psychological constructs, in conjunction with community economic conditions and access to decent work. The present study utilized latent structural equation modeling to test several hypothesized tenets of the Psychology of Working Theory (Duffy et al., 2016) involving the latent constructs of social class, work volition, decent work and life satisfaction, in a sample of 816 working adults. Modeling contained both a composite decent work (DW) factor and its five discrete components of DW: safe working conditions, adequate compensation, access to healthcare, adequate rest and free time, and a match of organizational and social/family values (Duffy et al., 2017). Moderation analyses relied on matching individual participant data to their county-specific opportunity data, such as poverty, unemployment, and Preschool enrollment rates. Results indicated that social class indirectly predicted DW through work volition and that DW subsequently predicted life satisfaction. When examining distinct DW components in tandem with a global construct, social class predicted the healthcare and rest/time off components of DW, which further attests to the unique variance in these components. Findings underscore the powerful role economic resources play in securing DW and shaping people’s work conditions, in addition to the clear impact of DW on overall well-being. Analyses did not yield significant moderation effects for economic conditions and community opportunity in hypothesized pathways. Implications for research, practice and policy, as well as study limitations are presented

Full textThis PhD thesis describes the processes involved during reading from a psycho-linguistic perspective, in particular, the role of morphology in the early stages of visual word recognition. It also seeks to better understand the differences and similarities between Monolingual and Multilingual mental lexical representation. To this end a series of experimental studies were designed. The so called ”pseudo-morphology” effect was tested in the first sections (exploring affixation and directionality), with the aim to explore how the structure of the word and saliency (for example, internal characteristics and frequency) play a role in lexical access. The section dedicated to multilingualism tests effect in first and second language and the cognate facilitation effect across languages (English, Spanish and French). The results obtained go in line with the recent supra-lexical model (Giraudo & Dal Maso, 2018) which postulates that construction morphology (Booij, 2010) is the main principle of organization of the mental lexicon
