Die Dissertation untersucht die Entwicklung des Gesamtkunstwerk-Konzeptes und seine Aktualität, Möglichkeit und Notwendigkeit in Bezug auf ein modernes filmisches Gesamtkunstwerk. Ausgegangen wird von der ästhetischen Theorie und Praxis der deutschen Frühromantik, in der das Konzept wurzelt. In einer umfassenden Betrachtung und Analyse der ästhetischen und gesellschaftspolitischen Dimension des Konzeptes in den Schriften und dem Werk Richard Wagners sollen wesentliche Strukturmerkmale erkundet und soll ein Maßstab für ein ‚positives‘ zeit-genössisches Gesamtkunstwerk gebildet werden, das sich von seinem ideologischen Missbrauch befreit. Erforscht wird, inwiefern der Farb- und Tonspielfilm ein geeignetes Kunstmedium für die Anwendung des Konzeptes darstellt und wie sich die Frage seiner gesellschaftspolitischen Dimension in der globalen Epoche übersetzen lässt.
The dissertation explores the evolution of the concept of the Total Work of Art (ʹGesamtkunstwerkʹ) as well as its actuality, feasibility and necessity in the form of a modern cinematic Gesamtkunstwerk. Starting point is the aesthetic theory and praxis of the Early German Romanticism, in which the concept is rooted. An extensive consideration and analysis of the concept in both its aesthetic and socio-political dimension as developed in the writings and works of Richard Wagner aims to define its essential structural features and to set the standard for a ʹpositiveʹ contemporary Gesamtkunstwerk beyond its ideological abuse. Key is the examination of how and to what extend the sound and colour feature film constitutes a legit artistic medium for the application of the concept as well as how its sociopolitical facet translates within the global era.

Zwei Aufgaben sind es, denen sich die vorliegende Dissertation stellt: Sie will die Rolle des Kulturtragenden bei der Etablierung der Öffentlichkeit einer pluralistischen, parlamentarisch-demokratisch verfassten Gesellschaft erörtern und dabei den zahlreichen Bemühungen um eine ideenhistorische Einordnung eines der sensibelsten Kapitel der deutschen Geschichte auf der Grundlage eines bislang nicht systematisch erschlossenen Quellenmaterials einen eigenständigen Akzent verleihen. Den epochalen Bezugsrahmen der Arbeit stellen die Jahre der Weimarer Republik dar. Ihre Quellenbasis erschließt sie sich mit einer umfangreichen Sammlung von Reaktionen auf die von führenden Tageszeitungen und Zeitschriften unter den Repräsentanten des Weimarer Kulturlebens durchgeführten Rundfragen zu einer vielfarbigen Palette aktualitätsgeschichtlicher, produktions- und rezeptionsästhetischer, gesellschafts- und kulturpolitischer Themen. Die Methode schließlich, derer sie sich bei der Auswertung dieses Materials bedient, ist die einer interdisziplinären, vor allem sozialgeschichtlich und ideologiekritisch orientierten Literaturwissenschaft. Das Alleinstellungsmerkmal der Arbeit ist ihre Quellenbasis: die Rundfragensammlung. Ein Namensverzeichnis ihrer Autoren würde sich lesen wie ein "Who is who?" der Weimarer Republik. Zu den Teilnehmern gehörte der schon damals kanonisierte Heinrich Mann genauso wie der junge Bertolt Brecht oder der heute fast völlig vergessene Hans José Rehfisch. Zu Wort gemeldet haben sich Vertreter beinah aller Sparten der Theater- und Opernwelt von Leopold Jessner über Tilla Durieux bis hin zu Leo Blech, aber auch Theologen wie Paul Tillich oder Politiker wie Konrad Adenauer, damaliger Oberbürgermeister von Köln. Mit vorliegender Arbeit wird dieses pressepublizistische Material erstmals aspektorientiert ausgewertet.
This thesis takes an exciting new look at a nearly forgotten body of texts written during the Weimar Republic, the so called "Rundfragen". It has two main objectives: The first is to describe the importance of intellectuals, of writers, artists, actors and academics, for the development of the structure of a pluralistic, parliamentary-democratic society, the second is to interpret one of the most important chapters of German history on the basis of the “Rundfragen”, a textual basis which never has been analyzed systematically. The historical period the thesis pays attention to is the Weimar Republic. The “Rundfrage” is a special genre of text from newspapers and journals, in which those who represented Weimar Germany''s cultural life were asked to discuss political, aesthetic, social and cultural problems of common interest. The thesis analyzes its textual basis using a multidisciplinary method combining literature and social history. The speciality of the thesis is without doubt its source material. A collection of the names of those who replied to a "Rundfrage" sounds like a "Who is who?" of the Weimar Republic. Among the authors are the famous novelist Heinrich Mann and the young Bert Brecht who earned his reputation as an innovative playwriter during the twenties. Also asked for articles were representatives of theatre''s and opera''s world, including the producer Leopold Jessner, the actress Tilly Durieux or the composer Leo Blech, also involved were the theologian Paul Tillich or Konrad Adenauer, at the time Lord Mayor of Cologne. The thesis is the first attempt to analyze the textual material of the "Rundfragen".

Die eingehende Analyse ausgewählter Aspekte der Wort-Ton-Gestaltung in Gustav Mahlers Vokalsinfonik ist Schwerpunkt der vorliegenden Untersuchung. Prämisse ist Mahlers Ausarbeitung ideenprogrammatischer Intentionen, wobei er sich die besondere Stärke der Musik, geistige Sachverhalte in gewisser Weise präziser als Sprache (die hier ins Symbolhafte ausweichen muss) verdeutlichen zu können, offensichtlich bewusst zunutze gemacht hatte. Die Differenziertheit der musikalischen Textinterpretation, zugleich Fokus der Analysen, weist deutliche graduelle Unterschiede auf. Sie reicht vom ,Vertonungscharakter‘ bis hin zur innigsten Anverwandlung von Musik und Textaussage bzw. -semantik. Wesentlich ist das oft proportionale Verhältnis von Grad der Freiheit, die sich Mahler hinsichtlich der Beziehung der Musik zur formalen Topographie des Textes nimmt, zu Intensität und Vielschichtigkeit der musikalischen Textexegese. Je stärker sich ihre musikalische Umsetzung in Richtung ‚Semantik-Ausarbeitung‘ bewegt, verliert die äußerliche Sprache an Materialität, wobei das im Lied von der Erde zutage tretende Amalgam von sprachlicher Semantik und Musik gesondert zu nennen ist. Letztendlich wird die überwiegend eher unbestimmte Textsemantik durch Mahlers Musik denotiert und in zuvor im Bereich der Vokalsinfonik nicht erreichter Intensität zum Klingen gebracht.
Focal point of this thesis is the detailed analysis of selected aspects of the relationship between music and text in Gustav Mahler’s vocal-instru-mental symphonies. Mahler’s elaboration of programmatic intentions functions as background. The composer obviously used the specific quality of music which is able to make spiritual or immaterial facts clearer than language (which here often has to switch over to symbolism). The variety of the text interpretation by Mahler’s music (on which the analyses are focused) shows distinct differences: from a relatively simple setting to music-character to an intense amalgam of music and semantics of the words. An important result of the analyses is the approximate proportionality between independency of Mahler’s music from the text’s formal parameters and intensity of the musical exegesis of the words. The more the music tends to elaborate the semantics, the more decreases the materiality of language. In this context the semantics-music-amalgam in the final movement of Das Lied von der Erde represents an unique example. Ultimately Mahler’s music supplies the denotation of the text semantics. This intermixture shows previously – in the history of development of vocal symphonic tradition – not heard intensity.

Abstract:
Near infrared spectroscopy (NIS) has been used routinely for many years for the measurement of grain protein and moisture in plant breeding programmes. Investigation as to the applicability of NIS to the identification from a barley breeding programme of the progeny with high malting quality potential was carried out over several harvests. The project concentrated on the determination of correlations between Hot Water Extract, Total Soluble Nitrogen, and Free Alpha Amino Nitrogen contents of worts (the extract of malt used to make beer) and NIR transmission data using the multivariate method of partial least squares regression. The correlation coefficients, for both calibration and prediction data sets, were significant and the standard error of prediction was similar to that obtained in the standard methods in the first year, but were unsatisfactory in the second. The instrument chosen for the study gave satisfactory correlations for the purpose of selection in the intermediate generations of the breeding programme with errors similar to the analytical methods, as long as a very wide range of calibration samples were collected from more than one harvest. It was shown that the use of an NIR spectrophotometer as a selection tool for malting quality within a barley breeding programme would not be sufficient to justify investment in this type of instrument for this purpose alone.

Abstract:
A quantitative and qualitative identification of the nitrogenous constituents of unfermented and final fermented wort has been performed for five industrial yeast strains. Results highlight the importance of three key amino acids in yeast fermentation performance. Supplementation of wort using individual amino acids and ammonia clearly demonstrate lysine and arginine to be marker nitrogen wort constituents. Synergistic effects of individual wort free amino acids and ammonia on yeast fermentation efficiency were also examined. Further analysis of nitrogeneous wort constituents included examination of oligopeptides with a molecular weight of less than 500 Daltons and the influence of yeast proteases on the availability of small peptides during fermentation. Both lager and ale yeast can simultaneously use amino acids and small peptides as sources of assimilable nitrogen. Laboratory malt and mash analysis of 28 malt types revealed that 80-95% of total free amino nitrogen originates during malting and the remaining 5-20% during mashing.

In unserer heutigen demokratischen Bürgergesellschaft denken wir mehr an Freiwilligenarbeit, die für ein funktionierendes Gemeinwesen unverzichtbar ist und deshalb wie früher von den gewählten Repräsentanten des Gemeinwesens, z.B. in Form von Verdienstorden, Preisen und anderen Auszeichnungen, anerkannt und gewürdigt wird. Abstract:
Fermentability is the parameter that describes the ability of yeast to turn sweet wort into alcohol. As the efficiency of this process is related with alcohol yield, it will regulate the amount of beer produced from a given amount of malt. Considering that fermentation efficiency is influenced by the concentration of fermentable sugars in wort, the diastatic power (DP) of malt has long been associated with fermentability. However, research studies have shown that DP alone can not explain much of the observed variability (R2?0.50) between malt samples. Some reports suggest that the separate determination of the activity and thermal stability of some of the enzymes contributing to DP and some malt modification parameters can considerably improve prediction (R2=0.91). On the other hand, few studies have focused on measuring fermentability variation in barley breeding. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of standard and non-standard malt quality parameters on the fermentability of different barley breeding lines, and to select the best multi-linear regression model for predicting this trait. Malts of 90 barley genotypes, grown in different locations of North Dakota during two years, were used in this study. Assays of the DP enzymes alpha-amylase, beta-amylase, alpha-glucosidase, and limit dextrinase, as well as their thermal stabilities (determined at 65?C for 10 min), were performed and adapted to a microplate reader format. Fermentability was determined as the real degree of fermentation (RDF) considering that the apparent degree of fermentation (ADF) showed strong alcohol dependence (R2=0.87), which could give false differences when comparing breeding lines in a population with high genetic variability. Results showed that, contrary to other reports, DP and beta-amylase and its thermostability are not highly associated with fermentability when the hot water extract (HWE) is used as the mashing method. Alpha-amylase and limit dextrinase though, had a more significant influence. The malt quality parameters: wort glucose, wort maltose, limit dextrinase, free amino nitrogen, soluble protein, alpha-amylase, and maltotriose, are considered the most significant factors for predicting fermentability as determined by the regression model (R2=0.71).

Abstract:
Seitdem der Computer in den 1990er Jahren zur omnipräsenten Infrastruktur der zeitgenössischen Architekturproduktion wurde, fand die technologische Seite der digitalen Formgenerierung große Aufmerksamkeit, wohingegen die Interpretation von Raum als kontinuierliche Oberfläche eher unterbelichtet blieb. Die relativ einfache und schnelle Erzeugung von Freiformflächen durch entsprechende 3D-Software, die Geschwindigkeit, mit der Computer ständig variable Morphologien und Familien von nicht euklidischen Formen berechnen können, hat zu der Annahme verleitet, die weichen Flächen und räumlichen Konfigurationen seien wissenschaftlich unausweichlich und technologisch prädestiniert. Die Wahl dieser Formen beruht aber weder allein auf einer technologischen Vorgabe noch auf einem rein stilistischen Konzept. Mithilfe neuer Technologien werden zeitbasierte Raummodelle erprobt, die sich vom traditionellen Konzept des kartesischen Raumes als Koordinatensystem abheben. Die Untersuchung und Interpretation dieser Raumvorstellungen und ihrer Semantik bilden den Kernpunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit. Dem rhetorisch formulierten Anspruch nach waren die computergenerierten Formen das Produkt einer Nullsetzung. So stark dieser Anspruch bis heute aufrechterhalten wird, so wenig lässt sich verbergen, dass diese scheinbar neue generierte Bildwelt auf zahlreichen Vorbildern aufbaut. Es sind vor allem die Programme und Projekte gegen eine als monoton und dogmatisch empfundene Architekturmoderne, die auf die Gestalter digitaler Raummodelle eingewirkt haben. Zur Rekonstruktion der Rezeptionslinien werden drei Raumbegriffe bestimmt, die ihre Prägung in der experimentellen Architektur der Nachkriegsmoderne fanden: der endlose Raum, die vernetzte Struktur und die schräge Fläche. Mit diesen Begriffen werden Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten in der Entwicklung der experimentellen Architektur herausgestellt, und die computerbasierten Raumkonzepte einer kritischen Betrachtung unterzogen.
Since the computer became omnipresent infrastructure of contemporary architectural production in the 1990s, a great deal of attention has been given to the technological side of the digital form generation, whereas the interpretation of space as a continuous surface has tended to remain underexposed. The relatively easy and fast generation of free-form surfaces using appropriate 3D software, the speed with which computers are able to calculate constantly variable morphologies and families of non-Euclidean shapes, has led to the assumption that soft surfaces and spatial configurations are scientifically inevitable and technologically predestined. However, the choice of these shapes is neither based on a technological specification nor on a purely stylistic concept. With the help of new technologies, time-based space models are tested, which contrast with the traditional concept of Cartesian space as a coordinate system. The investigation and interpretation of these spatial ideas and their semantics form the core of this work. If the rhetorically worded claim were to be believed, the computer-generated shapes are the product of muting. However strongly this claim has been maintained until now, it is nonetheless hardly possible to conceal that this apparently new generated graphic world is in fact built upon numerous examples. Above all, it is the programs and projects against a modern architecture found to be monotonous and dogmatic, which have influenced the designers of digital spatial models. To reconstruct the reception lines, three spatial terms are defined, which found their style in the experimental architecture of the post-war modern age: the endless space, networked structure and inclined surface. With the help of these terms, continuities and discontinuities are brought out in the development of experimental architecture, and the computer-based spatial concepts are subjected to critical examination.

Die Arbeit untersucht in zeittheoretischer Perspektive, in welcher Weise subjektives Zeitempfinden und sozial gestaltete Zeitrahmen deviantes Verhalten Jugendlicher strukturiert. Dazu werden in den ersten Kapiteln sozialwissenschaftliche Zeittheorien vorgestellt. Im Mittelpunkt der Dissertation steht die Rekonstruktion individueller Zeitmodi. Grundlage ist eine qualitative Längsschnittstudie. Neben relevanten Einstellungen und Alltagspraktiken werden auch Verlaufsformen und Konsequenzen im Zusammenhang mit dem Statusübergang von der Schule in den Beruf thematisiert. Besondere Beachtung findet das Phänomen der Langeweile bzw. der Umgang damit. Abschließend wird die Bedeutung sozial vermittelter Zeitgestaltung in bezug auf deviantes Handeln zusammengefasst.
Set in a theoretical perspective of time the dissertation focuses on how deviant behavior of adolescents is structured by subjective perception of time and socially-managed time frameworks. Accordingly, the first chapters survey sociological theories of time. The main focus of the dissertation is on the reconstruction of individual time schemes. Based on a longitudinal study, the dissertation deals with relevant attitudes and everyday conduct as well as process patterns and consequences in the context of changeover of status from school to occupation. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of boredom and how it is dealt with. In conclusion the meaning of socially-managed time is summarized in relation to deviant behavior.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the histories of mild to moderate depression and the use of over the counter (OTC) St. John’s wort (St. John’s wort) during the 1990s. In doing so it not only investigates the diagnosis and definition of mental illnesses, it also raises questions about the interface between conventional and alternative medicine. Using a variety of printed sources, including popular media articles, scientific and medical journal publications, and St. John’s wort self-help books, a number of historical themes are explored. This thesis takes issue with existing medical historical studies of depression. Firstly it is argued that they have presented progressive depression histories. Secondly, it is suggested that they have retrospectively diagnosed depression on the basis of similar symptoms. It is therefore argued that illness is specific to the time in which it exists and should be understood within its own historical timeframe. During the 1990s standardised St. John’s wort was promoted as a natural and safe remedy. Adverts and media reports also highlighted the fact that it had a long medical history. Although this thesis establishes that the plant has been traditionally used to treat physical illnesses, it seems that a growing distrust of conventional antidepressants, combined with an established interest in alternative medicine, encouraged some lay people to use the remedy to treat mild mood disorders. It is further argued that lay people have a history of self-treating minor mental illnesses using preparatory and OTC remedies such as preparatory nerve tonics. Not only did lay people desire autonomous treatments, it also seems that standardised St. John’s wort provided a functional role as an OTC remedy. By the 1990s the concepts of responsible self-care and self-treatment were being actively encouraged by medical authorities. Therefore this thesis reclassifies the passive mild to moderately depressed patient as an active consumer. Following an analysis of the popular media it is suggested that the 1990s coverage of depression and its treatments was confusing. Indeed, depression and its treatment with conventional medicines and St. John’s wort were sometimes presented as part of a wider life style choice. Finally, it is argued that by the 1990s standardised St. John’s wort received the same scientific and medical scrutiny as conventional medicines. It is therefore suggested that the remedy represents a situation in which the boundaries between conventional and alternative medicines have become increasingly indistinguishable.

Das Wort was a literary journal published by German Communist writers and fellow-travelers exiled in Moscow from 1936 to 1939. It was to be a mouthpiece for German literature in exile and to promote the Popular Front policy, which sought to unite disparate elements in non-Fascist Europe in opposition to the Nazis. Das Wort, under the editorship of German Communist writers whose close association with the Soviet Union had been well established in the previous decade, tried to provide a forum for exiled writers of various political persuasions, but was unwavering in its positive portrayal of Stalin's Soviet Union and the policies of that country. As the level of hysteria grew with the successive purges and public show trials in the Soviet Union, the journal adopted an even more eulogistic and militant attitude: any criticism or expression of doubt about Soviet policy was equated with support for Fascism. Thus the ability of the journal to contribute to the formation of a true common front in Europe to oppose Fascism was compromised from the outset by its total support for the Soviet Union. The Popular Front policy foundered on this issue, and that portion of German literature in exile which was to form the first generation of East German literature was inextricably bound to the Soviet Union well before the German Democratic Republic came in to existence.
