Abstract:
Abstract Ungdomar vill skilja sig från vuxna på olika sätt och markera distans mellan grupperna. Detta kan ungdomar bland annat göra genom att använda sig av ett eget språk. Ungdomdsspråk skiljer sig från de vuxnas språk på bland annat lexikalisk och morfologisk nivå. I detta arbete undersöks 16 ord som förekommer i tyska ungdomslexikon. Avsikten med undersökningen är att ta reda på huruvida orden förstås och verkligen används av ungdomar i delar av Tyskland, Österrike och även Sverige. Även de vuxnas tillämpning och förståelse av ungdomsspråket undersöks. Totalt deltar 80 informanter i undersökningen. Resultatet visar till sist att ungdomsspråket inte är enhetligt. Det finns ord som ungdomar inte alls känner till och några av orden använder de sig inte alls av. Vuxna känner även till vissa ungdomsord men de tillämpar sällan orden i vardagen. Man kan även fastställa att sammanhanget spelar en viss roll, skämtsamt använder även några vuxna ungdomsspråk. Slutligen kan sägas att ungdomsspråket är mycket utpräglat av den tid vi nu lever i och att många ord och uttryck som förekommer i ungdomsspråket endast förblir för en kort tid i språket medan vissa ord lyckas hålla sig kvar. Det innebär att möjligtvis kan något eller några av de 16 undersökta orden få en plats i standardspråket i framtiden.

Terminological innovation has a considerable tradition in Swahili. This article takes recent terminology from the domain of information and communication technology (ICT) as a case study. It argues that, despite the principles and guidelines issued by Tanzanian language development authorities, the influence of English in developing new terms is evident. Furthermore, it shows that sometimes terms which are difficult to trace or which are related to different explanations of their origin, can achieve a broad acceptance by Swahili speakers, such as ‘tovuti’ ([web]site) or ‘tarakilishi’ (computer). Analysing terminology issued by the Open Swahili Localization Project in Dar es Salaam, aspects of loan-based translation and different strategies of creating new terminology, such as the use of the connective -a and of (new types of) composita, are discussed. Also here, the question of acceptance by the actual speakers of the language is taken into account.

Die Sprache der Judenfeindschaft in der frühen Neuzeit (1450–1700) steht im „Grenzbereich zwischen sprach- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Antisemitismusforschung“, die die „zeittypischen Argumentationsstrategien, Begründungsmuster und sprachlichen Darstellungsmittel in antijüdischen Schriften“ der Frühen Neuzeit in den Blick nimmt, um die „Zusammenhänge von vormodernem (religiösem) ,Antijudaismus‘ und modernem (rassistisch-säkularem) ,Antisemitismus‘“ zu erhellen (Klappentext). Methodisch ruht die Studie auf einer Verschränkung zwischen struktureller Semantik und einer die Argumentationsstrukturen hervorhebenden Textlinguistik auf. Sie knüpft damit unmittelbar an die Vorarbeiten von Nicoline Hortzitz an, die in der Sprache der Judenfeindschaft die Ergebnisse ihrer Dissertation zum Früh-Antisemitismus (1988), der Monographie Judenarzt (1994) und diverser Aufsätze in einer „Gesamtbewertung der Befunde“ (S. V) vorlegt. In seiner Besprechung der Dissertation zum Früh-Antisemitismus merkte Matthias Richter kritisch an, daß „infolge des strukturalistischen Ansatzes die individuellen Differenzen zwischen den untersuchten Autoren zu sehr vernachlässigt werden.“¹ Die „minuziöse[] und aufwendige[] Systematisierung des sprachlichen Instrumentariums der Früh-Antisemiten“² setzt die vorliegende Monographie in der Ausweitung des Untersuchungszeitraums fort, ohne dabei jedoch eine „strukturelle Untersuchung“ liefern zu wollen, wie die Akzentverschiebung im Titel nahe zu legen scheint.

Few East African groups have attracted the attention of academics as much as the Swahili of coastal Kenya and Tanzania. The Swahili town of Lamu has even been described as having more professional researchers than doctors per inhabitant (Mazmi and Shariff 1994:2). Researchers commonly describe the Swahili as having a maritime culture (Middleton 1992:8; Nurse and Spear 1985:97; Prins 1965:263-275) and looking to the sea for their livelihood and identity (Mazmi and Shariff 1994:19; Ylvisaker 1975:74-83). They stress the contact of the `sea-prowling` Swahili with the ocean through seafaring, trading, fishing, and boat building to acquire wealth and social standing (Mazmi and Sharif 1994: 19; Middleton 1992: 8). Futhermore, the origin of the word Swahili is said to stress the proximity of the sea, coming from the Arabic sawahil (coast) or being of local origin, swahili (literally this island), making the Swahili variously the people of the coast (Middleton 1992:1) or the people of this island (Mazmi and Shariff 1994:56).

Abstract:
Kiswahili language has undergone a lot of changes in the last decades especially at the lexical level. Many lexical items have been coined, adapted, borrowed or modified to express concepts that were hitherto unknown or non existent in the Swahili world view cosmology. One area that has witnessed a lot of these changes has been the area of sciences, or better put science has been a prime causer of many neologisms in this language. This eventuality has gone a long way to disprove the naive assumptions that the language has not come of age to express scientific concepts.

Abstract:
Vocabulary tests have long been used for estimating premorbid intelligence level in the neuropsychological assessment of dementia. However, doubts exist about the validity of such intelligence tests. The present study examines whether the Multiple-Choice Vocabulary Test – Version A (Mehrfachwahl-Wortschatz-Test – Version A, MWT-A) is valid for assessing premorbid intelligence level. Data from a total of 821 patients in a specialized outpatient clinic for dementia (memory clinic), covering the whole spectrum of cognitive impairment, were evaluated using analysis of variance with the dependent variable premorbid intelligence level (MWT-A) and the independent variable extent of global cognitive impairment (Mini-Mental-State Examination, MMSE: mean = 25.2, SD = 3.9). The latter was divided into six MMSE ranges or groups, respectively (29–30, 28–28, 27–27, 25–26, 22–24, 05–21). In the case of a pathologically relevant global cognitive impairment (24–26 MMSE points), the MWT-A underestimates the premorbid intelligence level. This effect is moderated neither by age nor education. Results indicate that the MWT-A is unsuitable for estimating premorbid intelligence level in neuropsychological assessments of cognitively impaired patients or demented patients.

Abstract:
The paper describes a computer system for testing the coherence and adequacy of dictionaries. The system suits also well for retiieving lexical material in context from computerized text archives Results are presented from a series of tests made with Kamusi ya Kiswahlli Sanifu (KKS), a monolingual Swahili dictionary.. The test of the intemal coherence of KKS shows that the text itself contains several hundreds of such words, for which there is no entry in the dictionary. Examples and frequency numbers of the most often occurring words are given The adequacy of KKS was also tested with a corpus of nearly one million words, and it was found out that 1.32% of words in book texts were not recognized by KKS, and with newspaper texts the amount was 2.24% The higher number in newspaper texts is partly due to numerous names occurring in news articles Some statistical results are given on frequencies of wordforms not recognized by KKS The tests shows that although KKS covers the modern vocabulary quite well, there are several ru·eas where the dictionary should be improved The internal coherence is far from satisfactory, and there are more than a thousand such rather common words in prose text which rue not included into KKS The system described in this article is au effective tool for `detecting problems and for retrieving lexical data in context for missing words.
