Abstract:
The one-step-ahead controllers represent a branch of minimum prediction error adaptive controllers. They combine the parameter estimation of the controlled system model with the control scheme; therefore, they are especially suitable for non-linear and time-varying systems. Since the estimated parameters are updated at each time step (by using the sampled data), these methods can be adopted for non-linear applications. Consequently, the one-step-ahead controllers do not require knowledge of the dynamic characteristics of the controlled system (e.g. state-space systems or transfer functions). Sometimes, in the gas turbine field, the control system could produce an excessive control effort, due to sudden variations of the electric load. In order to reduce this control action, the weighted one-step-ahead adaptive (WOSAA) control algorithm considers a penalty associated with the control effort using an appropriate cost function. In this way, the control variable does not assume values that are too large, even when the gas turbine undergoes sudden changes in the external load. As a consequence, the robustness and stability features of the WOSAA control system are increased. The results show that the WOSAA control technique, applied to both the double-shaft aero-derivative gas turbine and the single-shaft heavy-duty gas turbine, effectively counteracts the load reduction with limited overshoot in the controlled variables with reduced control effort.

Abstract:
Objectives: The urology-oncology service in NHS Ayrshire and Arran (AA) is nurse-led, with a multidisciplinary team (MDT) process at its core. Here, we assess the efficacy of this nurse-led service against similar services and consider it in the context of the new NHS cancer strategy. Materials and methods: Audit data regarding the management of patients with urological malignancies published by the West of Scotland Cancer Network (WoSCAN) were compared against pre-determined quality performance indicators. These data were used to assess the efficacy of the NHS AA service against the other WoSCAN centres. Results: All parameters analysed were comparable, except for the following performance indicators for which the NHS AA data appeared to show significant improvement compared with the other WoSCAN centres: the number of patients with bladder cancer with recorded TNM clinical staging ( p = 0.012); the proportion of patients with prostate cancer who underwent transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy for histological diagnosis where a minimum of 10 cores are received by pathology ( p = 0.043); and the number of patients with metastatic prostate cancer who underwent immediate hormone therapy ( p = 0.031). Conclusion: Our analysis demonstrates that the NHS AA urology-oncology nurse-led MDT-based service is a highly efficient and well-functioning structure.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In this study, we describe wosA, a Proteus mirabilis gene identified by its ability to increase swarming motility when overexpressed. At various times during the swarming cycle, the increased expression of wosA resulted in a 4- to 16-fold upregulation of the transcription of flhDC, encoding the master regulator of the flagellar cascade. In turn, the expression of flaA, encoding flagellin, was substantially increased in wosA-overexpressing strains. The overexpression of wosA also resulted in constitutive swarmer cell differentiation in liquid medium, a normally nonpermissive condition. However, in wosA-overexpressing strains, the onset of swarming was not altered. A null wosA allele resulted in a slight decrease in swarming motility. The expression of wosA was growth phase dependent during growth in liquid and on agar plates during swarmer cell differentiation. Increasing the viscosity of liquid medium by the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone induced swarmer cell differentiation and resulted in a fourfold increase in wosA transcription. A fliL mutation that results in constitutive swarmer cell elongation also increased wosA transcription. In this study, we discuss the possible role of the wosA gene product in signal transduction from solid surfaces to induce swarmer cell differentiation, possibly via alterations in the motor switch complex. This study also suggests that despite constitutive swarmer cell differentiation in wosA-overexpressing strains, there are additional regulatory and/or environmental conditions that may control the onset of swarming migration.

Abstract:
Abstract Erythrocyte polymorphisms, including ovalocytosis, have been associated with protection against malaria. This study in the Wosera, a malaria holoendemic region of Papua New Guinea, examined the genetic basis of ovalocytosis and its influence on susceptibility to malaria infection. Whereas previous studies showed significant associations between Southeast Asian ovalocytosis (caused by a 27– base pair deletion in the anion exchanger 1 protein gene) and protection from cerebral malaria, this mutation was observed in only 1 of 1019 individuals in the Wosera. Polymerase chain reaction strategies were developed to genotype individuals for the glycophorin C exon 3 deletion associated with Melanesian Gerbich negativity (GPCΔex3). This polymorphism was commonly observed in the study population (GPCΔex3 frequency = 0.465, n = 742). Although GPCΔex3 was significantly associated with increased ovalocytosis, it was not associated with differences in either Plasmodium falciparumor P vivax infection measured over the 7-month study period. Future case-control studies will determine if GPCΔex3 reduces susceptibility to malaria morbidity.

We investigate the efficiency of weak orthogonal super greedy algorithm (WOSGA) for [Formula: see text]-term approximation with respect to dictionaries which are [Formula: see text]-unconditional in arbitrary Hilbert space [Formula: see text] For an element [Formula: see text], let [Formula: see text] be the output of WOSGA after [Formula: see text] steps for some constant [Formula: see text]. We show that the residual [Formula: see text] can be bounded by a constant multiplying the error of best [Formula: see text]-term approximation to [Formula: see text] Moreover, we get an element [Formula: see text], through a simple postprocessing of [Formula: see text] by retaining its [Formula: see text] largest components in absolute value, which realizes near best [Formula: see text]-term approximation for [Formula: see text] Our results are obtained for dictionaries in [Formula: see text] which satisfies the weaker assumption than the RIP condition.

Abstract:
Cognitive radio is a technology that aims to maximize the current usage of the licensed frequency spectrum. Cognitive radio aims to provide services for license-exempt users by making use of dynamic spectrum access (DSA) and opportunistic spectrum sharing strategies (OSS). Cognitive radios are defined as intelligent wireless devices capable of adapting their communication parameters in order to operate within underutilized bands while avoiding causing interference to licensed users. An underused band of frequencies in a specific location or time is known as a spectrum hole. Therefore, in order to locate spectrum holes, reliable spectrum sensing algorithms are crucial to facilitate the evolution of cognitive radio networks. Since a large and growing body of literature has mainly focused into the conventional time domain (TD) energy detector, throughout this thesis the problem of spectrum sensing is investigated within the context of a frequency domain (FD) approach. The purpose of this study is to investigate detection based on methods of nonparametric power spectrum estimation. The considered methods are the periodogram, Bartlett's method, Welch overlapped segments averaging (WOSA) and the Multitaper estimator (MTE). Another major motivation is that the MTE is strongly recommended for the application of cognitive radios. This study aims to derive the detector performance measures for each case. Another aim is to investigate and highlight the main differences between the TD and the FD approaches. The performance is addressed for independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh channels and the general Rician and Nakagami fading channels. For each of the investigated detectors, the analytical models are obtained by studying the characteristics of the Hermitian quadratic form representation of the decision statistic and the matrix of the Hermitian form is identified. The results of the study have revealed the high accuracy of the derived mathematical models. Moreover, it is found that the TD detector differs from the FD detector in a number of aspects. One principal and generalized conclusion is that all the investigated FD methods provide a reduced probability of false alarm when compared with the TD detector. Also, for the case of periodogram, the probability of sensing errors is independent of the length of observations, whereas in time domain the probability of false alarm is increased when the sample size increases. The probability of false alarm is further reduced when diversity reception is employed. Furthermore, compared to the periodogram, both Bartlett method and Welch method provide better performance in terms of lower probability of false alarm but an increased probability of detection for a given probability of false alarm. Also, the performance of both Bartlett's method and WOSA is sensitive to the number of segments, whereas WOSA is also sensitive to the overlapping factor. Finally, the performance of the MTE is dependent on the number of employed discrete prolate spheroidal (Slepian) sequences, and the MTE outperforms the periodogram, Bartlett's method and WOSA, as it provides the minimal probability of false alarm.

Abstract:
Botswana, formerly known as the Bechuanaland Protectorate, is a country with diverse tribal and religious cultures. Bakalanga are one of the tribes found in Botswana and also in Westrn Zimbabwe. The Western part of the Zimbabwean Bukalanga region was included in the then Bechuanaland Protectorate when its border with Zimbabwe was fixed. To date, Botswana's traditional music has been passed from generation to generation, entirely orally. The main contribution of this study is collecting, documenting and preserving Bakalanga traditional music-making. After abolishing official usage of the Ikalanga language, at independence in 1966, in the early 1990's the Botswana government re-discovered that a nation without culture is a lost nation. Funds were then set aside to be used annually for the development of culture. In using these funds to revive their culture and traditional music, Bakalanga of North Eastern Botswana declared 21 May to be their annual cultural day. Photographs and video footage of these annual cultural festivals were taken by the researcher to help illustrate certain aspects of Ikalanga music and dance in this thesis. Several factors influencing Ikalanga traditional music were taken into consideration: the historical background of Bakalanga, their relationship with other tribes such as the Amandebele, their education, their language in relation to other languages and the missionary influence. Ikalanga traditional music instruments are described. The Mwali religion, which forms the basis of wosana music, linking Bakalanga of Botswana and those of Zimbabwe through the Njelele sacred place joint annual ceremonies, is discussed at length. Different Ikalanga traditional music types are addressed as follows: • Rain Making/Praying music; Wosana and Mayile • Traditional Music for Happy Occasions and Entertainment; Ndazula, Mukomoto, Woso, Iperu, Tshikitsha, Bhoro and Ncuzu./ Maskhukhu • Traditional Music for Healing Purposes; Mazenge (Shumba), Sangoma and Mantshomane. All the above music types are practised within Bukalanga communities publicly, with the exception of mazenge, which is regarded as sacred and private. Bhoro is also extinct in Zimbabwe. The notation of Ikalanga traditional basic musical themes is provided, except for mazenge and ncuzu. which were not found anywhere during this research.

Abstract:
The One Step Ahead Controllers represent a branch of the Minimum Prediction Error Adaptive Controllers. They combine the parameter estimation of the controlled system model with a particular control scheme; therefore, they are especially suitable for non-linear and time-varying systems. Since the estimated parameters are updated at each time step (by using the sampled data), these methods can be adopted for real-time applications. Consequently, the One Step Ahead Controllers do not require the knowledge of the dynamic characteristics of the controlled system (e.g. state space systems or transfer functions). The One Step Ahead Adaptive (OSAA) algorithm combines the Least Square Algorithm (LSA) parameter estimator with a Deterministic Auto-Regressive Moving Average (DARMA) control scheme. The DARMA model can be characterized with a different number of time steps in the past (order of the estimated model) in relation to the dynamic feature of the controlled system. Sometimes, an excessive control effort could arise, caused by sudden variations of the electric load. In order to reduce this control action, the OSAA control technique has been applied also in Weighted fashion. The Weighted One Step Ahead Adaptive (WOSAA) control algorithm considers a penalty associated with the control effort by use an appropriate cost function. In this way, the control variable does not assume too large values, even when the Gas Turbine undergoes sudden changes in the external load. As a consequence, the robustness and the stability features of the WOSAA control system are increased with respect to the OSAA algorithm. The proposed techniques have been applied to a single shaft heavy-duty gas turbine (WOSAA) and to a double-shaft aero-derivative gas turbine (OSAA). They have been tested in Single-Input Single Output (SISO) mode. In the simulation tests, the plant is assumed to undergo sudden variations of the electric load. Second order schemes of the OSAA estimated model have been derived and applied to the double-shaft aero-derivative gas turbine. The results show that the OSAA control technique, applied to the double-shaft aero-derivative gas turbine, effectively counteracts the load reduction with limited overshoot in the controlled variables and, introducing an integral correction, with a negligible static error. On the other hand, the WOSAA control algorithm is able to efficiently regulate the single shaft heavy-duty gas turbine, and to counteract the sudden variations of the electric load, with reduced control effort.
