Abstract:
Abstract The present article illustrates how the change in the geographic location of Liyāna Badr, one of the prominent Palestinian women writers, influenced her writing in thematic and stylistic terms. It shows how Badr’s writing shifts from descriptions of isolation and loneliness, alienation and yearning for the past, to describing feelings of rage and frustration with the reality of Israeli occupation, and how from an innovative and vague writing style she shifts to a realistic, simple, and direct style that reflects the themes of her stories and the messages she wishes to convey. In this way Badr reinforces the connection of her work with Palestinian existence and the reality of occupation, and does not let the contemporary writing directions adopted by the young women authors influence the degree of Palestinian-ness of her texts.

Abstract:
Etty (Esther) Hillesum was a young Jewish Dutch woman who kept a diary throughout the entire period of the Holocaust, until she met her own death in Auschwitz. The diary, written in the hellish environment of the Nazi occupation of Holland, provides us with an opportunity to explore the transformational power manifested in the mutual witnessing that takes place between the writer and the reader. The author reviews three aspects of the writer's testimony, each one of which embodies a unique reparative function: testifying about the events, testifying as evidence, and testifying to the reader.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the activities of Borys Hrinchenko, the famous Ukrainian writer, poet, publicist and public figure, in periodicals in the territory occupied by the Nazi army during World War II. It is shown that the figure of Borys Hrinchenko and his multifaceted work found a response in hearts of the Ukrainian people in conditions of the hardships of World War II; editors of newspapers and periodicals often appealed to the works of famous writers, poets and publicists in all parts of Ukraine. It is found that the main content of the writer’s works was the struggle for the Ukrainian national cause and an independent state. The high interest in the figure of Borys Hrinchenko and his work during World War II is demonstrated by the number of publications in the occupation periodicals.

In this performance autoethnography, the writer explores how a person, a young woman, opens her eyes to the occupation of the Palestinian territories, patriarchal values, her social privilege and her positioning as both oppressed and as an oppressor. The writer attempts to sequence her personal and sexual biographies, while resisting the dichotomies of personal/political, privilege/oppressive, and pleasure/pain; contextualizing one’s sexual, gendered, and ethnic body, at different positions of ignoring and resisting power relations.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings In today’s workplace, employees are taking responsibility for their own learning and development. The learning paths they take are often strategically motivated and directed, as opposed to simply provided and planned by human resource professionals. Some learning-path types can be found specific to certain occupations, while learning-path strategies and motives can be found in employees regardless of occupation. For successful learning, individual learning paths must be recognized and it is also necessary to consider a specific occupational context. Practical implications The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Originality/value The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.

Abstract:
Alice Walker was an American writer whose novels, short stories, and poems are noted for their insightful treatment of African American culture. Her novels, most notably The Color Purple (1982), are focused on the struggles of black people, particularly women, and their lives in a racist, sexist, and violent society. Walker’s Pulitzer prize and American Book award-winning novel, The Color Purple, marks the apex of her career. It gained international prominence, as the writer did herself. Her novels, short stories, poetry and essays are all about a search for truth. The Color Purple is unique in its pre-occupation with spiritual survival and with exploring the oppressions, insanities and triumphs of black women.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper discusses the Romaji Movement and its role in the reform of the Japanese written language during the Allied Occupation of Japan (1945-1952). Past analyses concerning the Romaji Movement have suggested that romanization failed due to conspiracies against it and have neglected to consider other alternatives being pursued by the Japanese government. This paper will take a closer look at the Americans who supported romanization, their motivations for doing so, and the development of SCAP policy towards language reform. Since simplification, not romanization, was the preferred objective of both the American and the Japanese governments, this paper goes on to examine alternative methods to simplification which, in the end, proved to be highly successful.

Whyte, Fraser. "À la recherche de la France perdue: An examination of private diaries written during the Occupation of 1940-1944." Thesis, University of Canterbury. French, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4614.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of private diaries written during the Occupation of France, 1940-1944. The authors are not necessarily of French origin and did not always directly experience the Occupation. What they all provide is an insight into the period at the individual level. The aim of this thesis is to see how these individual testimonies contribute to a more comprehensive portrait of how the French lived during this period, and suggest new approaches for the historiography of the Occupation period. Although the analytical focus of this study is predominantly textual, there is, nevertheless, a determination to place this textual analysis in an historical, rather than a literary, context. This study privileges the diaries of Léon Werth, Charles Rist, Jean Guéhenno and Andrzej Bobkowski because these selected diarists provide the greatest historical insight into the Occupation period. In order to appreciate why these diarists are more historically relevant than the other selected diarists, it is necessary in the introductory chapter to first examine the process of writing the private diaries. The first chapter demonstrates that the Occupation was from the outset a heterogeneous experience for all the diarists. The overall aim of this thesis is to demonstrate what divides the selected diarists as well as what unites them. The second chapter illustrates how History from above endeavours to categorise these individual experiences in order to impose a sense of order on them. The perspective of history from below reveals that for all the developments throughout the Occupation that had a universal impact on shaping attitudes and behaviour, there were just as many forces acting against these general trends to prevent a uniform experience. The third chapter demonstrates that the examination of life at the everyday level is just as important, if not more so, in gaining a comprehensive understanding of life during the Occupation period. These areas of inquiry combine to yield a portrait of a highly complex testimonial genre, where the ambivalence and the ambiguity of the period are reflected in the contrasting and often conflicting views of the authors.

Abstract:
This essay reflects a particular method and way of working that I employ when undertaking artistic research. My artworks are rooted and develop from the situation I find myself in as an artist, the very context I exhibit the work within. I do this by trying to understand this position, both on the micro and macro scale. As an artist currently studying at—and subsequently exhibiting in relation to— Konstfack, I base my research with the physical manifestation of the school. An imposing building that was part of a huge headquarters and factory site for the telecommunication company, Ericsson, in south Stockholm. The title of my essay is from the translation of a unique German cipher machine, the Geheimschreiber, made known to me through enquiry into this site. Throughout the Second World War the German army used this machine to send highly encrypted military messages across Swedish telephone cables. Following one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of cryptography, a Swedish mathematician broke this German code and subsequently assisted in designing a deciphering machine on behalf of the Swedish Intelligence branch. This device, known as the App, was secretly developed and manufactured by Ericsson, possibly where I now study. In exploring the theme of secrets, this essay originates from an underpinning desire and subject of my work to reveal what is concealed or overlooked. Through researching and writing this essay I attempt to have a better understanding on the notion of secrets, in both the private and public realms. Introducing the artistic process and situation I am working from, I explore the central role that secrets play within society. In order to understand secrecy today I introduce the intertwined and associated contemporary debates of privacy, (both private and public) and transparency through such subjects as Google’s new privacy policy, mobile phone hacking, WikiLeaks and offshore banking.

Abstract:
To the extent that Tolkien's fantasy meets his own criteria for faL. ie as the "eucatastrophic " tale which points toward "Evangelium," the eschaton when God's plan in creation will be fulfilled and the effects of the fall overcome, Tolkien may be described as a gospel writer. That he intended his work to be read as "gospel," "the good news of the Kingdom of God," is suggested by its allusions to biblical and classical mythology, its linear view of history, its presentation as a compilation of received tradition. collected and translated by many hands from a wide variety of sources, by the location of Middle Earth in the distant past of our own world and by the author's attempt to create a world which comforms to familiar patterns of evolution.

James, Nicola. "Jane Gardam : religious writer." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7628/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the work of the award-winning contemporary English short story and novel writer Jane Gardam. It proposes that much of her achievement and craft stems from her engagement with religion. It draws on Gardam’s published works from 1971 to 2014 including children’s books and adult novels. While Gardam has been reviewed widely, there is little serious critical appreciation of her fiction and there are misreadings of the influence of religion in her work. I therefore analyse the religious dimensions of her stories: the language, stylistics and hermeneutic of Gardam’s three religious influences, namely the Anglo-Catholic, Benedictine and Quaker movements and how she sites them within her work. The thesis proposes lectio divina, arguably an ancient form of contemporary reader-response criticism, as a framework to describe the Word’s religious agency when embedded or alluded to in fiction. It also considers and applies critical discussion on the medieval concept of the aevum, a literary religious space. Finally, I suggest that religious writing such as Gardam’s has a place in the as yet unexplored ‘poetic’ strand of Receptive Ecumenism, a new movement that seeks to address reception of the Word between members of different faith communities. Having examined many aspects of Gardam’s writing, its history and potential, I conclude that her achievement owes much to her engagement with particular and divergent forms of religious life and practice.

Full text
Abstract:
The Argonauts is a one hundred and ten minute screenplay depicted in the genre of children's adventure film, set in the suburbs of Brisbane in the early 1990s. It tells the story of four friends who embark on adventure in an attempt to save their parents' shops from a corporate takeover. The exegesis explores the dual role of the screenwriter/director and the affect on the screenplay of the shifts in mindset required when these roles are undertaken by the same person. Screenwriting and directing are explored as two separate but interlinked disciplines. In this paper I have draw on my experience in these two roles to discuss their inter-relationship. In order to understand how the two roles of screenwriting and directing interact, challenge and compliment one another when carried out by the same person, I analyse the interplay of these roles within the specific areas of character, narrative and setting in the writing and revision of the screenplay, The Argonauts.

Abstract:
Abstract. A lot of scientific literature has already been written on the study of the consequences of a new coronavirus infection. The real long-term effects of this disease on population health are yet to be studied in the coming years. Vibration disease is a leading occupational pathology in the Russian Federation, characterized by vegetative-vascular disorders of the extremities and is manifested by cold extremities, cyanosis, paresthesias, and a violation of regional blood circulation. It is necessary to take into account the concomitant chronic diseases in patients who are particularly dangerous in the post-ovoid period. The aim of the study was to study the features of hemodynamics in patients with vibration disease after a new coronavirus infection. In the clinic of occupational pathology, 28 patients were examined with a previously established diagnosis of vibration disease after a coronavirus infection. Ultrasound examination of the arteries and veins of the upper extremities was performed. In patients with ultrasound of the vessels of the upper extremities, moderate expansion of the radial and ulnar veins, insufficiency of the valvular apparatus during functional tests, and increased venous outflow were revealed. There was also an increase in peripheral vascular resistance, which indicates violations of the tonic properties of the vessels of the upper extremities and violations of vasodilation. Inference. In patients with vibration disease in the post-ovoid period, ultrasound examination reveals violations of the tonic properties of blood vessels, venous dyscirculation in the veins of the forearm.

Abstract:
First results of the excavation of the medieval castle of Dos Hermanas (Montemayor, Cordoba)In the south of the kingdom of Córdoba, there is the castle so-called Dos Hermanas, located in the municipality of the current town of Montemayor. It has been considered that the construction of the castle of this stately town was the result of the first moments of decline of the fortress of Dos Hermanas, located on the bank of the Carchena stream. Currently, a first excavation campaign has been carried out that brings us closer to the anthropic occupation of the site. At the same time, the archival research gives new information to the history of the site, exceeding the date of 1340, when Don Martín Alonso de Córdoba partially destroyed the Arab fortress of Dos Hermanas to build the castle of Montemayor. The first data extracted from the field work support the written sources, providing us with new data that allow us to make a more complete and novel interpretation. The survival of part of the facilities of the Dos Hermanas castle with an occupation from Roman times to the sixteenth century that shows the total non-depopulation of the place in the fourteenth century, as previously thought. A high degree of conservation of the structures found inside the wall enclosure appears a southern bay with stables with nine mangers. To the west, there is a vain and an angled staircase that allowed access from the parade ground until the round pass over the main door, which is also preserved. The objective of this proposal will be to present these first results of the archaeological intervention centered on the southern wall of the castle. These research works are accompanied by a consolidation project of the main structures, all financed by the Provincial Delegation of Cordoba and Montemayor Town Hall, whose continuity is developed in 2019 and 2020.
