Abstract:
This paper studies the media image of a modern Russian writer Dina Rubina basing on her portrait (face-to-face) interviews and subject-related portrait interviews in various contemporary Russian and pro-Russian media: newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, and the internet-media. Growing interest to modern writers in the media environment and to interaction between the writer and the reader via mass media determines the topicality of the research. The study object is a public figure from the literary community. In this relation, the author finds it necessary to distinguish between the notions "media image", "imagery", and "image". The interviews with Dina Rubina are analyzed in the context of the form and contents of her works, which helps to identify and fix some personal intentions of the writer. The author studies the writer's media image basing on the theory of archetypes, as well as their influence on Dina Rubina's and her interviewers' professional behavior. The specific character of the questions asked to the writer prove the importance of the archetype of the creator and its dominance among the contributory archetypes, namely, those of the Harlequin and the mother. Special attention is paid to the gender aspect of a modern writer's media image, which is quite significant for Dina Rubina and her readers.

Abstract:
The image of the writer plays an important role in the publicist works of Ivan Bunin in 1920. It is the image of the author struggling against the Bolsheviks, and the image of those writers who helped the Bolsheviks propaganda as well as “new Soviet writers”. In 1920 Bunin as the most signif-icant writer of the Russian Diaspora focuses on the most famous writer among those who, according to Bunin, supports the Bolsheviks – Maxim Gorky. Bunin also pays close attention to the contro-versy with H.G. Wells: this is due to the role that the English writer played in the context of Soviet Russia. Bunin’s works in 1920 are written as a reaction of the Russian writer to the various texts published in the press, and the discussion with the works of his main opponents – Gorky and Wells.

Abstract:
This study aims at shedding some light on the images of women in some feminist novels known as Feminist Literature. The research depicts a number of Arabic feminist writers concentrating on the structure of Feminist Literature generally, and Arabic women writers specifically. The study examines the characters, the narrative angle and the narrative sequence and its objective sensitivity at three levels: the woman as an author, a narrator, and the artistic character dealing with issues of justice, liberty and equality with man, considering the various humanitarian models: the striver, the lover and the educated within the borders of the forbidden, the fear, and the limitations. The popularity of Feminist Literature is one of the issues of modernity in the Arab world. The role of Jordanian women writers is apparent in literature. Their creative works compete with those of dominant men in terms of imagery and artistic presence. The inner persona of the woman writer is dominant even though her work represents a realistic view. The problematic issue of writing for women writers seems to be plunged in paradox and sharp in its novelistic representation. The novelistic modules studied indicate the success the Arab woman writer achieved in terms of the use of artistic tools, and the ability to confront and reveal the untold. Although the feminists’ novels seem to dwell in an anxious environment, they represent an arena of conflict representing the artistic and living realities.

Abstract:
‘Difficile d'écrire sur soi ou sur ses écrits’ are the first words of a 2003 monograph that Michel Butor published about himself in Seghers's collection ‘Poètes d'aujourd'hui’. This series, like other collections of illustrated monographs, builds the writer's image through a combination of different types of discourse and several actors. Butor's volume on his own work tends to blur such distinctions and to challenge the collection's model, not only because of the intervention of the writer, but also because of Butor's interest in the processes through which his image is crafted. This paper examines a series of six monographs published on Michel Butor between 1964 and 2009, firstly, in order to shed light on the way the image of a high profile writer is carved in collections of illustrated monographs, and, secondly, to reach a better understanding of Michel Butor's relation to critical discourse and to his own image.

NIST, under sponsorship from the Bureau of the Census, has collected a database consisting of 2,100 pages of binary image data of handprinted characters including numerals and text. NIST Special Database 1 contains handwriting samples from 2,100 writers geographically distributed across the United States, NIST is currently using this database to research field-isolation, box detection and removal, character segmentation, and writer-independent neural character recognition. In addition to advancing the design of algorithms, this database and its study can aid the social sciences. Observations can be compiled and used to improve form design and field layout strategies. Region-based studies and comparisons are also possible due to regionally distributed and referenced populations of writers in the database. In creating this large database, obstacles to the effective archiving of images have been dealt with and eliminated. This paper describes the database's content in terms of its collection, organization, and usefulness. The strategies and conventions used to develop NIST Special Database 1 can be applied to any discipline requiring the use of image archives.

Bracey, Maggie. "Confidence, the Image of the Writer, and Digital Literacies: Exploring Writing Self-Efficacy in the College Classroom." TopSCHOLAR®, 2012. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1154.

Full text
Abstract:
Self-efficacy plays a major role in the way we perceive our abilities to complete challenging tasks and goals. With Albert Bandura’s theories of self-efficacy as its theoretical foundation, this thesis explores the ways Bandura’s theories apply to writing instruction and how specific cultural forces help shape the way students view their identities as writers. This study gives a focused and detailed explanation of the role writing self-efficacy occupies in education and composition theory, as well as the factors affecting a person’s perceived writing efficacy. Additionally, the relationship between self-efficacy and new literacy (Lankshear and Knobel), a term used for twenty-first century forms of digital composition that differ from traditional print literacy, is established and theoretical suggestions made regarding how teachers can incorporate new literacies into writing instruction to promote positive writing self-efficacy. The final chapter defines the image of the writer and the scene of writing (Brodkey), and the ways these beliefs and stereotypes affect the confidence and self-efficacy of student writers. With the image of the writer as inspiration, the study concludes by conducting a survey administered to 109 first-year composition students regarding their personal views on what attributes make a good writer and good writing. This study does not set out to establish concrete, overarching conclusions regarding self-efficacy, digital literacies, and the image of the writer; instead, it creates new points for further inquiry and encourages teachers to seek out different ways of fostering positive self-efficacy within writing instruction.

Abstract:
The humanities have for a long time been a collection of fields that have not gained from the advancements in computational power, as predicted by Moore´s law.  Fields like medicine, biology, physics, chemistry, geology and economics have all developed quantitative tools that take advantage of the exponential increase of processing power over time.  Recent advances in computerized pattern recognition, in combination with a rapid digitization of historical document collections around the world, is about to change this. The first part of this dissertation focuses on constructing a full system for finding handwritten words in historical manuscripts. A novel segmentation algorithm is presented, capable of finding and separating text lines in pre-modern manuscripts.  Text recognition is performed by translating the image data of the text lines into sequences of numbers, called features. Commonly used features are analysed and evaluated on manuscript sources from the Uppsala University library Carolina Rediviva and the US Library of Congress.  Decoding the text in the vast number of photographed manuscripts from our libraries makes computational linguistics and social network analysis directly applicable to historical sources. Hence, text recognition is considered a key technology for the future of computerized research methods in the humanities. The second part of this thesis addresses digital palaeography, using a computers superior capacity for endlessly performing measurements on ink stroke shapes. Objective criteria of character shapes only partly catches what a palaeographer use for assessing similarity. The palaeographer often gets a feel for the scribe's style.  This is, however, hard to quantify.  A method for identifying the scribal hands of a pre-modern copy of the revelations of saint Bridget of Sweden, using semi-supervised learning, is presented.  Methods for production year estimation are presented and evaluated on a collection with close to 11000 medieval charters.  The production dates are estimated using a Gaussian process, where the uncertainty is inferred together with the most likely production year. In summary, this dissertation presents several novel methods related to image analysis and machine learning. In combination with recent advances of the field, they enable efficient computational analysis of very large collections of historical documents.<br>q2b

Cronin, Maurice. "From the image of the reader to the figure of the writer : a Pragmatic Approach to the Question of Aesthetics and Ideology in the Work of Flannery O'Connor." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCA128.

Full text
Abstract:
The principal aim of this dissertation is to provide a fresh approach to the vexed question of the relationship between the aesthetic and the ideological in the work of Flannery O’Connor. Unlike existing studies of this question in the critical literature, the approach adopted in this dissertation is based on the premise that it can best be treated in the context of a theory of literary discourse, one, in particular, that takes full consideration of the reflexive and performative dimensions of literary works. This theoretical assumption has considerable consequences for the study of the relationship between literary texts and the social, political, historical and literary contexts of their reception and circulation. In particular, it suggests that literary texts inscribe and negotiate the social and historical conditions of their circulation and reception, and that the question of their context should be approached first and foremost through the study of this textual inscription and negotiation. Insofar as it takes full consideration of the mediatory logic that such textual negotiation entails—in particular the mediating presence and effect of the figures of the reader and the author, the genre of the work, and the literary field—literary pragmatics will be seen to provide an approach which not only enables this study, but also reveals in a new light both the complexity and the singularity of Flannery O’Connor’s literary signature

Martins, Fayad Marilda. "L'idiot de la famille et ses leçons : Sartre, un penseur pour aujourd'hui." Thesis, Besançon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016BESA1007/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The Fool of the family is complement to the book of philosophy Questions of Method. Sartre asks in Questions of Method a change of language. It will be in this thesis to decipher Sartre writing in its nuances, details and colors. In other words, it is designed to study books from Sartre in order to find a meaning that makes sense for us, where his words are full of statements and their contrary at the same time. Our task of re-reading in The Fool of the family is to clarify the central axis of the existential psychoanalysis and point the most hidden of the philosophy of life. Insofar as Sartre will show that we must decide on the kind of life we want to have, this study aims to illuminate why Sartre is an indispensable thinker for the man of today. Thus, it will be necessary to treatThe Fool of the family as a work for learning. In this sense, the meaning and significance of our research are not closed and still opened to new readings. Our main objective is to clarify what has been the main theme of Sartreto write The Fool of the family and to check if the essence of the writer can be defined by his writings. In other words, do the writings show us who is the author as a man, or else can we rather see his double, one who speaks at his place and then become written word?

Abstract:
The article analyzes the illustrative work of Russian writers of the first quarter of the 19th century. Special attention is paid to the definition of the term "writer-artist", as well as to techniques for creating the image of a writer-Illustrator in a work of fiction. In conclusion, we draw a conclusion about the relationship between literature and painting (on the example of interpreting the creativity of word masters who create illustrations for their works), as well as about the unique communicative nature of the image of the writer-artist.
