Bracey, Maggie. "Confidence, the Image of the Writer, and Digital Literacies: Exploring Writing Self-Efficacy in the College Classroom." TopSCHOLAR®, 2012. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1154.

Full text
Abstract:
Self-efficacy plays a major role in the way we perceive our abilities to complete challenging tasks and goals. With Albert Bandura’s theories of self-efficacy as its theoretical foundation, this thesis explores the ways Bandura’s theories apply to writing instruction and how specific cultural forces help shape the way students view their identities as writers. This study gives a focused and detailed explanation of the role writing self-efficacy occupies in education and composition theory, as well as the factors affecting a person’s perceived writing efficacy. Additionally, the relationship between self-efficacy and new literacy (Lankshear and Knobel), a term used for twenty-first century forms of digital composition that differ from traditional print literacy, is established and theoretical suggestions made regarding how teachers can incorporate new literacies into writing instruction to promote positive writing self-efficacy. The final chapter defines the image of the writer and the scene of writing (Brodkey), and the ways these beliefs and stereotypes affect the confidence and self-efficacy of student writers. With the image of the writer as inspiration, the study concludes by conducting a survey administered to 109 first-year composition students regarding their personal views on what attributes make a good writer and good writing. This study does not set out to establish concrete, overarching conclusions regarding self-efficacy, digital literacies, and the image of the writer; instead, it creates new points for further inquiry and encourages teachers to seek out different ways of fostering positive self-efficacy within writing instruction.

Abstract:
The humanities have for a long time been a collection of fields that have not gained from the advancements in computational power, as predicted by Moore´s law.  Fields like medicine, biology, physics, chemistry, geology and economics have all developed quantitative tools that take advantage of the exponential increase of processing power over time.  Recent advances in computerized pattern recognition, in combination with a rapid digitization of historical document collections around the world, is about to change this. The first part of this dissertation focuses on constructing a full system for finding handwritten words in historical manuscripts. A novel segmentation algorithm is presented, capable of finding and separating text lines in pre-modern manuscripts.  Text recognition is performed by translating the image data of the text lines into sequences of numbers, called features. Commonly used features are analysed and evaluated on manuscript sources from the Uppsala University library Carolina Rediviva and the US Library of Congress.  Decoding the text in the vast number of photographed manuscripts from our libraries makes computational linguistics and social network analysis directly applicable to historical sources. Hence, text recognition is considered a key technology for the future of computerized research methods in the humanities. The second part of this thesis addresses digital palaeography, using a computers superior capacity for endlessly performing measurements on ink stroke shapes. Objective criteria of character shapes only partly catches what a palaeographer use for assessing similarity. The palaeographer often gets a feel for the scribe's style.  This is, however, hard to quantify.  A method for identifying the scribal hands of a pre-modern copy of the revelations of saint Bridget of Sweden, using semi-supervised learning, is presented.  Methods for production year estimation are presented and evaluated on a collection with close to 11000 medieval charters.  The production dates are estimated using a Gaussian process, where the uncertainty is inferred together with the most likely production year. In summary, this dissertation presents several novel methods related to image analysis and machine learning. In combination with recent advances of the field, they enable efficient computational analysis of very large collections of historical documents.<br>q2b

Cronin, Maurice. "From the image of the reader to the figure of the writer : a Pragmatic Approach to the Question of Aesthetics and Ideology in the Work of Flannery O'Connor." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCA128.

Full text
Abstract:
The principal aim of this dissertation is to provide a fresh approach to the vexed question of the relationship between the aesthetic and the ideological in the work of Flannery O’Connor. Unlike existing studies of this question in the critical literature, the approach adopted in this dissertation is based on the premise that it can best be treated in the context of a theory of literary discourse, one, in particular, that takes full consideration of the reflexive and performative dimensions of literary works. This theoretical assumption has considerable consequences for the study of the relationship between literary texts and the social, political, historical and literary contexts of their reception and circulation. In particular, it suggests that literary texts inscribe and negotiate the social and historical conditions of their circulation and reception, and that the question of their context should be approached first and foremost through the study of this textual inscription and negotiation. Insofar as it takes full consideration of the mediatory logic that such textual negotiation entails—in particular the mediating presence and effect of the figures of the reader and the author, the genre of the work, and the literary field—literary pragmatics will be seen to provide an approach which not only enables this study, but also reveals in a new light both the complexity and the singularity of Flannery O’Connor’s literary signature

Martins, Fayad Marilda.

Full text
Abstract:
The Fool of the family is complement to the book of philosophy Questions of Method. Sartre asks in Questions of Method a change of language. It will be in this thesis to decipher Sartre writing in its nuances, details and colors. In other words, it is designed to study books from Sartre in order to find a meaning that makes sense for us, where his words are full of statements and their contrary at the same time. Our task of re-reading in The Fool of the family is to clarify the central axis of the existential psychoanalysis and point the most hidden of the philosophy of life. Insofar as Sartre will show that we must decide on the kind of life we want to have, this study aims to illuminate why Sartre is an indispensable thinker for the man of today. Thus, it will be necessary to treatThe Fool of the family as a work for learning. In this sense, the meaning and significance of our research are not closed and still opened to new readings. Our main objective is to clarify what has been the main theme of Sartreto write The Fool of the family and to check if the essence of the writer can be defined by his writings. In other words, do the writings show us who is the author as a man, or else can we rather see his double, one who speaks at his place and then become written word?

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is constructed on the basis of a personal artistic production created over my personal experience on work and education related travels, through the itineraries explored by the means of transportation, in those instances where a photo can happen while attentive and apprehensive towards the world outside, while passing through cities and around me inside terminals, waiting for trains, buses or ferries. With a mobile device and a tablet device always at hand, I aimed at capturing the flow, the speed and elapsed time between shots and different experiences while in constant movement. In order to reach that, I used several artistic procedures to assess and select the perceptual and visual spaces delimited by my own point of view. The photograph happens as life goes on is the title of a specific travel project that here, in this research, take shape and amplify its scope, gathering the travel records produced in a period comprising four years. The recurrent theme captured by the pictures confirms the general assumption of the research: the problem of passage of time in contemporaneity. With easy access to all the urban and virtual mobility technologies and the instant and concurrent stimuli they provide, we find ourselves moving faster, rushing through life and fighting against time. The act of defying this urgent and frantic use of time becomes relevant when this very research, going beyond its objectives and goals, becomes aware of itself as a process, thinking the inevitable passing of time during its conception. The content produced as narratives of the passage of time are revealed by means of written and visual images, and, at the end, returned to the art field and presented as a series of photographs, postcards, notebooks, journals, lists, objects and installations.

Essas instanciações cumprem funções cognitivo-discursivas distintas no discurso publicitário. The aim of this work is to investigate the instantiations of multimodal metaphors from the interaction between written texts and images on printed advertisements. For this purpose, we based the research on the Socio-cognitive Linguistics contribution, which postulates language as an activity of conceptualization and conceives metaphor as an element of thought, language and actions (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980 and 1999; Lakoff, 1987 and 2008). The corpus of the research was collected from monitoring, from July 2013 to June 2014, the five largest monthly magazines with national circulation: Claudia, Nova Escola, Quatro Rodas, Seleções Reader's Digest and Superinteressante. These magazines were read in order to check the realization of multimodal metaphors. We adopted methodological suggestions proposed by Schmitt (2005), which aim to gather subjective factors and methodological procedures in the analysis of metaphors and attempts to reconstruct models of thought, speech and action. At the end of the collection, the corpus was composed of thirty (30) printed advertisements. Analyses showed the realization of multimodal metaphors in four different categories: (i) multimodal target is visual source, (ii) verbal target is multimodal source, (iii) verbal target is visual source and (iv) multimodal target is multimodal source. These instantiations meet cognitive-discursive distinct functions in advertising discourse. In addition, the findings showed the performance of conventional metaphors (LIFE IS A JOURNEY, for example) and episodic metaphors (processor [of cellphones] is running, for example). These embodiments do not appear to be random, but they serve for defined purposes in the analyzed texts. The proposed categories enable reflection on the metaphorical mappings and arrangements involving their realization and their use in advertising discourse.

Mayo, James Oliver. "Images of Corsica in France: Travel Memoirs and 19th Century Writers." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2009. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1764.

Full text
Abstract:
Considered an integral part of Metropolitan France, the island of Corsica is situated nonetheless on the very periphery of the modern state that claims it. Actually situated geographically closer to Italy than to any part of France, its culture and its people are likewise more closely related to their Italians neighbors than to the rest of what Corsicans term "Continental France." Following the acquisition of Corsica, both government officials and bourgeois travelers would seek to visit the island, often recording their findings and publishing these memoirs for others to know of their travels. This concept of travel memoirs, specifically those regarding Corsica, had already been a fairly common practice among the British, as they had often placed interest in the island itself. From this group of French and British travel memoirs would come the writings of James Boswell, P. P. Pompéi, and the Baron de Beaumont, among others. Corsica becomes a place of unique setting for novels and short stories throughout the century, with tales of banditry, vendetta, and violence from the island. For those authors seeking to place their stories in Corsica, inspiration was drawn from the very travel memoirs they had read regarding the island, although often they chose to ignore them in favor of stereotypes. I have chosen three specific 19th century authors in relation to the images created by the travel memoirs of Corsica: Prosper Mérimée, Honoré de Balzac, and Guy de Maupassant. The purpose behind each author's use of the images of Corsica was very different and shows different ways that these images were used. Mérimée directly used Corsica to question the triumph of the civilized over the uncivilized, Balzac used Corsica to represent France itself, and Maupassant used Corsica to show that "reality" is really nothing more than a personal illusion. Though when publishing their travel memoirs the authors might not have expected much to come of them, they have actually influence an entire century of writers, and possibly an entire nation, with their images of Corsica.

Abstract:
The thesis considers aspects of British perceptions, images and attitudes towards war and defence, and certain key persons who presented them to the public, approximately from 1866 to 1906. It is concerned primarily with leading civilian artists and writers on war and defence, and with the message and images presented by the press, books and pictures, on land warfare more than naval warfare. It considers first the visual images of war in the press and painting, and the press special war artists and the studio battle-painters. It then considers war correspondents and the work and message of two leading correspondents, Archibald Forbes and George Warrington Steevens. It then considers aspects of the warportrayal and message of the fiction of future war. Conclusions drawn include the essential unity of the presented image of war and defence, such that the varied media and communicators mutually reinforced their message. The image was shaped by predetermined selectivity by an ideological cluster of patriotism, imperialism, social darwinism, bellicism and martial values. These so dominated perceptions that the presentations of those with and without battle experience hardly differed. The presentations were purposive and inspirational, warning and urging material and moral preparation. War was presented positively, as heroism and adventure, its horrors minimised and contained. Military and civilians interacted in this presentation, and the communicators were also influenced by factors including continental influences, party politics, journalistic imperatives, artistic and literary convention, and individual careerism. Though pacifists and others dissented from it, the influence of this dominant image of war and defence was pervasive, shaping the assumptions of the pre-1914 nation.

Anderton, Marja Arendina Louise. "The power to destroy false images : eight British women writers and society 1945-1968." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1994. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4409/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims to oppose the assumption underlying many studies that the immediate post-war period was a `silent' time in which there were no signs that women were not generally content to follow the ideal of femininity, and that the feminist movement started suddenly in 1968. This thesis focuses on the dissenting voices which could be heard both in society and literature before 1968. Part I deals with the position of women in society between 1945 and 1968. It concentrates particularly on women at work and in the family. The fact that more married women than ever before entered the labour market after World War II contradicts the idea that British women in the '50s were mostly housewives. Furthermore, in spite of the apparent coming into existence of the so-called `affluent society', women had many reasons to feel dissatisfied. Women were mainly found in low-status and low-paid jobs, and in the family women had very little power, especially sexually and financially. This part of the thesis also deals with women in society who were expressing the discontent they felt. First of all, there were middle-class journalists (e.g. Stott) and sociologists (e.g. Gavron, Klein) who were registering women's dissatisfaction in their publications. Secondly, an outlet for grievances for women was formed by The Guardian's women's page (especially the letters section) which discussed many controversial issues. Part II deals with another group of middle-class women who turned to the problematic position of women in society in their publications, eight British women novelists who started writing in this period. This part discusses the lives of Doris Lessing, Iris Murdoch, Muriel Spark, Penelope Mortimer, A.S. Byatt, Margaret Drabble, Edna O'Brien and Beryl Bainbridge, with particular reference to their emergence as writers. The biographical section refers to interviews as well as to letters to the author. The final part of the dissertation discusses several novels by each writer. There are three main themes which recur again and again in these novels, the search for an identity (a female form of the Bildungsroman is very popular), the restrictive influence of the family on the heroines, and the importance of work for the self-esteem of many of the female characters.

Mtuze, Peter Tshobiso. "A feminist critique of the image of woman in the prose works of selected Xhosa writers (1909 - 1980)." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/23636.

Full text
Abstract:
The study examines, from a feminist point of view, the stereotypic image of woman in Xhosa prose fiction from pre-literate times to the era of written literature (1909 - 1980). Attaching feminist critical theory to conventional literary characterisation gives this pioneering study a human dime,n sion that is bound to rejuvenate traditional critical appredation and highlight the tremendous power of art to reflect or parallel real-life experiences. Consequently, the study transcends the confines of traditional literary criticism. It throws interdisciplinary light on the African feminist dilemma over the past 70 years while focusing on gender stereotyping as a characterisation technique. Chapter 1 clearly demarcates the scope of study and the critical position adopted, while chapter 2 traces stereotypes back to Xhosa folk-tales. In this way, an interesting link or parallel in stereotyping between oral and written literature is highlighted. It is worth pointing out that Chapter 3 is significant in that no women writers' works produced in the first and the second decades have survived. The male writers of the period describe women in strict stereotypic fashion, without fear of contradiction, from Woman as Eve to Woman as Witch, among other archetypal images. The female stereotypic image in the third and the fourth decades, the role of the first two female novelists and the early seeds of female. resistance to male domination, are discussed. in Chapter 4 while Chapter 5 highlights the depiction of female characters by male and female prose writers in the Fifties, culminating in Mzamane's exposure of glaring anti-female social norms and practices. In Chapter 6 the spotlight is cast on the woman of the Sixties and the rise of active resistance to male dominance. Some contemporary women, as pointed out in Chapter 7, have crossed the Rubicon in diverse ways. They are assertive, independent, proactive and relentlessly opposed to male dominance. Chapter 8 sums up the main points in relation to the Xhosa woman's attitude towards Western feminism: while many Xhosa women feel justifiably unhappy about male dominance, they refuse to let their frustrations affect their unity with men in the greater struggle against racism. Although the study concludes on an anti-climactic note for Western feminists, it focuses on this crucial and unique distinction between Western and black feminism.

Nederhof, Mark-Jan. "OCR of hand-written transcriptions of hieroglyphic text." Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig, 2016. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:15-qucosa-201704.

Full text
Abstract:
Encoding hieroglyphic texts is time-consuming. If a text already exists as hand-written transcription, there is an alternative, namely OCR. Off-the-shelf OCR systems seem difficult to adapt to the peculiarities of Ancient Egyptian. Presented is a proof-of-concept tool that was designed to digitize texts of Urkunden IV in the hand-writing of Kurt Sethe. It automatically recognizes signs and produces a normalized encoding, suitable for storage in a database, or for printing on a screen or on paper, requiring little manual correction. The encoding of hieroglyphic text is RES (Revised Encoding Scheme) rather than (common dialects of) MdC (Manuel de Codage). Earlier papers argued against MdC and in favour of RES for corpus development. Arguments in favour of RES include longevity of the encoding, as its semantics are font-independent. The present study provides evidence that RES is also much preferable to MdC in the context of OCR. With a well-understood parsing technique, relative positioning of scanned signs can be straightforwardly mapped to suitable primitives of the encoding.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine to what extent representations of double jeopardy and the stereotypical images of African American females: Mammy, Matriarch, Sapphire, and Strong Black Woman emerge in the blues lyrics of Alberta Hunter, Gertrude "Ma" Rainy, Memphis Minnie, and Victoria Spivey, using the theoretical framework of Black feminist rhetorical critique. The findings in this research entail several meanings regarding the lives of African American women during the 1920s and 1930s. Representations of racism, sexism, and classism also appear in the theme of relationships with various subthemes. The focus of this study is to explore the evolution of Black music and examine the role women have played in both the development and advancement of the blues genre. Additionally, the study will explore various concepts of cultural identity development in order to establish the process of how identity is constructed and negotiated in African Americans specifically African American women.

Norint atskleisti populiarinimo(si) procesus, rašytojo vardas tyrinėjamas kaip prekės ženklas.Nagrinėjant rašytojo vardą kaip prekės ženklą, remtasi Wally Olinso keturių vektorių apibrėžtimi iš knygos „Prekės ženklas“ (2006), kur pristatomos darnaus prekės ženklo dedamosios dalys – produktas, aplinka, elgesys ir komunikacija. Kadangi Olinsas tik apibendrintai pristato prekės ženklo ypatumus ir nesiūlo prekės ženklo tyrimų būdų, tinkančių šio darbo objektui, pasitelkiama naratologo Gerardo Genette parateksto („Paratexts: Thresholds of Interpretation“, 2001) teorija, kurioje preciziškai išanalizuojamas kiekvienas knygos elementas. Peritekstų analizė (tai, kas knygos viduje – formatas, viršeliai, turinys etc.) padėjo ištirti kūrybinio produkto (knygos) įvaizdį; epitekstų analizė (tai, kas knygos išorėje – reklama, vieši autoriaus pasirodymai, kritika; neliteratūriniai rašytojo produktai etc.) padėjo įvardinti rašytojo kaip prekės ženklo kuriamą įvaizdį. Tyrimo medžiaga – verbali (bulvarinė spauda, kultūriniai leidiniai, interneto svetainės etc.) ir vizuali (televizija ir kitos masinės komunikacijos priemonės).<br>The theme of this work – promotion and self promotion strategies between contemporary Lithuanian writers (Marcelius Martinaitis, Zita Cepaite, Jurga Ivanauskaite, Vytautas V. When studying the name of the writer as a brand, I make reference to the definition of four vectors from the Wally Olins book “On brand” (2003), where he introduces the component parts of a well–proportioned brand – product, environment, behavior and communication. Olins only roughly introduces pecularities of brand and doesn’t suggest exploratory methods of brand, which could be helpful to the theme of this work, that’s why the narratology theory of Gerard Genette about paratext („Paratexts: Thresholds of Interpretation“, 2001) was invoked, it helps to analyse with precision each element of a book. Analysis of peritexts (everything in the book – format, cover, content etc.) helped to study the image of an creative product (book); analysis of epitexts (everything about the book – publicity, public appearances of an author, interview, critique, unliterary products of a writer etc.) helped to detect the image which writer as a brand creates. The material of study is verbal (gutter– press, cultural publications, web pages etc.) and visual (television and the other mass means of communication).

Abstract:
This manner of reading the 20th century French women’s writers leads the researcher to examine the stereotypes of the “feminine literature” prevailing at that time in order to explain the complex play of different kinds of power involved in the emergence of the interwar women writers generation refusing any collective identity, as well as any filiation with their feminine predecessors (George Sand, Rachilde, Colette, Anna de Noailles, Marcelle Tinayre, etc.). Not surprisingly, the women writers of the “new wave” promote instead the idea of making oneself: the human subject is therefore viewed as a product of social and discursive forces that every single individual’s choice is to confirm or to reject. Thus, the inferiority assigned to the women’s writing is neither called in question nor denounced: it is simply passed over, evaded considering this generic identity irrelevant to the exceptional cases of the striking personalities - the influential (women) intellectuals and the successful (women) authors

Bleck, Melani. "The collapse of space : reconfiguring and re-imag(in)ing social relations in Native American written narratives." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22699.

Full text
Abstract:
Recently, many scholars of Native American Literature have expressed an increasing concern over the proliferation of Euroamerican based criticism within their field. They believe that the use of theories predicated on a western worldview to analyze American Indian texts condones the ongoing appropriation of Native American culture. The imposition of western theory privileges an Euroamerican narrative and consequently results in the continued subjugation of American Indian experience: it perpetuates the basic assumptions and attitudes behind colonization. This thesis explores the techniques employed by American Indian authors to resists western theory and to offer an alternative perspective from within a tribal framework. Their attempts to redefine reality through a tribal context necessitate the destabilization of certain underpinning assumptions upheld by the dominant Society: specifically spatial theory. The European settlers' perspective of Native American emerged out of their belief that land existed as <i>space </i>to acquire. The subsequent policies implemented to facilitate their appropriation of the land had detrimental effects on American Indians who had no concept of space or of land in terms of individual ownership. Space, a western construct, creates a dichotomy between emptiness and occupation: the desired state. Viewing land as an object to possess results in domination and alienation. These ramifications of spatially defining land remain linked to notions of occupation and possession, which imply otherness, or separation from self. Conversely, space and its characteristics, because it is abstraction, held no significance for Native Americans before its introduction by the settlers. Tribal life relies upon integration and connection, therefore, nature and land exist as part of a tribal worldview. Henri Lefebvre, in his book <i>The Production of Space, </i>suggests that nature destabilizes the fundamental qualities of space. Due to the reliance of American Indian writings on tribal traditions, which remain inseparable from nature, space must therefore collapse.

Abstract:
Background. Nowadays, information retrieval system become more and more popular, it helps people retrieve information more efficiently and accelerates daily task. Within this context, Image processing technology play an important role that help transcribing content in printed or handwritten documents into digital data in information retrieval system. This transcribing procedure is called document digitization. In this transcribing procedure, image processing technique such as layout analysis and word recognition are employed to segment the document content and transcribe the image content into words. At this point, a Swedish company (ArkivDigital® AB) has a demand to transcribe their document data into digital data. Objectives. In this study, the aim is to find out effective solution to extract document layout regard to the Swedish handwritten historical documents, which are featured by their tabular forms containing the handwritten content. In this case, outcome of application of OCRopus, OCRfeeder, traditional image processing techniques, machine learning techniques on Swedish historical hand-written document is compared and studied. Methods. Implementation and experiment are used to develop three comparative solutions in this study. One is Hessian filtering with mask operation; another one is Gabor filtering with morphological open operation; the last one is Gabor filtering with machine learning classification. In the last solution, different alternatives were explored to build up document layout extraction pipeline. Hessian filter and Gabor filter are evaluated; Secondly, filter images with the better filter evaluated at previous stage, then refine the filtered image with Hough line transform method. Third, extract transfer learning feature and custom feature. Fourth, feed classifier with previous extracted features and analyze the result. After implementing all the solutions, sample set of the Swedish historical handwritten document is applied with these solutions and compare their performance with survey. Results. Both open source OCR system OCRopus and OCRfeeder fail to deliver the outcome due to these systems are designed to handle general document layout instead of table layout. Traditional image processing solutions work in more than a half of the cases, but it does not work well. Combining traditional image process technique and machine leaning technique give the best result, but with great time cost. Conclusions. Results shows that existing OCR system cannot carry layout analysis task in our Swedish historical handwritten document. Traditional image processing techniques are capable to extract the general table layout in these documents. By introducing machine learning technique, better and more accurate table layout can be extracted, but comes with a bigger time cost.<br>Scalable resource-efficient systems for big data analytics

Abstract:
The woman has always been an invisible individual behind the act of ’Great men’ in the Roman society. The woman’s gender role has forever been specified where the woman is a submissive, quiet and an unintelligent individual who wants to do everything for her man. Even though this gender role is created by authors that are men and is about how they consider a woman should behave, what about the women’s view on this matter? By means of getting an answer to this question, we can get a fuller perspective and an understanding about the Roman woman and as a woman writer in a patriarchal society. The purpose with this essay will therefore be to give a fuller perspective about the Roman society and its woman writers. In order to fulfill this purpose, I have asked the following questions: How did men react when women published their literary work and is it possible to investigate how the women thought about themselves through analyzing their work. And how was it possible for a woman to publish her texts in a society where women had no rights and a small chance to publish her work for the public? In order to have been able for doing this examination I have delimit myself and investigate three women, Cornelia, Hortensia and Sulpicia. Cornelia wrote letters, Hortensia wrote and delivered a speech and Sulpicia wrote poems. I have used the ancient sources Appian, Nepos, Tibullus to get the quotes of the women’s texts. I have also used other ancient sources like Aelian, Cicero, Ovid, Plutarch, Pliny, Quintilian and Valerius Maximus for other valuable information about the three women and their literature. They contribute with comments about the women and about women’s possibilities to get an education. I have a gender role and feminist view through the entire essay as the main focus is the three roman women writers. I have done this by analyzing the women’s texts and investigated what men thought about them and high educated women generally. And how the society encounters this texts. Through all this we have got a better understanding about how the attitude was towards the Roman woman and how she looked upon herself – and with that a fuller perspective on the Roman woman in general instead of the androcentric view we had before. There are a lot of variables that contribute to whether the woman can publish her work which is status, wealth, her loyalty to Rome and contacts with important people. Through all these men were relative positive about the three women’s texts and the women themselves were relative positive to themselves.

Abstract:
After the invention of the printing press in the Renaissance, knowledge became progressively based on the use of signs with no essential relation with things, spatially reconstructed with words on the page. The classical age in general and the eighteenth century in particular have often been characterized by the primacy of sight as a means of knowledge, at the expense of other senses. Such is at least one of Michel Foucault’s arguments in the Order of Things. Our thesis strives to qualify this perspective and show how, within the domination of the written culture, remnants of the traditional oral culture survived. Not only in the archaic forms of popular entertainment such as fairs, farces and fairy tales, but in what might be considered as the epitome of modernity: machines. The eighteenth century was a hot bed of contraptions aiming to produce sounds and images and to record them. Among these, our attention has focused on the real or imaginary inventions of Tiphaigne de La Roche (audio monitoring and fixation of images) Diderot (automatic production and conservation of musical pieces), Abbé Mical (reproduction of the human voice) and Father Castel (visual transposition of sounds). The careful examination of such machines as well as the ideological context of their emergence, enables us to show how the Enlightenment was open to forms of comprehension of the world much more varied than is often stated.Today the development of new media has made us familiar again with modes of representation which are more analogical than words. The tensions proper to the media system of the eighteenth century provide us with instruments to think about our relation to the world around us

Malapetsa, Christina. "Stroop tasks with visual and auditory stimuli : How different combinations of spoken words, written words, images and natural sounds affect reaction times." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för lingvistik, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-185057.

Full text
Abstract:
The Stroop effect is the delay in reaction times due to interference. Since the original experiments of 1935, it has been used primarily in linguistic context. Language is a complex skill unique to humans, which involves a large part of the cerebral cortex and many subcortical regions. It is perceived primarily in auditory form (spoken) and secondarily in visual form (written), but it is also always perceived in representational form (natural sounds, images, smells, etc). Auditory signals are processed much faster than visual signals, and the language processing centres are closer to the primary auditory cortex than the primary visual cortex, but due to the integration of stimuli and the role of the executive functions, we are able to perceive both simultaneously and coherently. However, auditory signals are still processed faster, and this study focused on establishing how auditory and visual, linguistic and representational stimuli interact with each other and affect reaction times in four Stroop tasks with four archetypal mammals (dog, cat, mouse and pig): a written word against an image, a spoken word against an image, a written word against a natural sound and a spoken word against a natural sound. Four hypotheses were tested: in all tasks reaction times would be faster when the stimuli were congruent (Stroop Hypothesis); reaction times would be faster when both stimuli are auditory than when they are visual (Audiovisual Hypothesis); reaction times would be similar in the tasks where one stimulus is auditory and the other visual (Similarity Hypothesis); finally, reaction times would be slower when stimuli come from two sources than when they come from one source (Attention Hypothesis). Twelve native speakers of Swedish between the ages of 22 and 40 participated. The experiment took place in the EEG lab of the Linguistics Department of Stockholm University. The same researcher (the author) and equipment was used for all participants. The results confirmed the Stroop Hypothesis, did not confirm the Audiovisual and Similarity Hypothesis, and the results of the Attention Hypothesis were mixed. The somewhat controversial results were mostly attributed to a false initial assumption, namely that having two different auditory stimuli (one on each ear) was considered one source of stimuli, and possibly the poor quality of some natural sounds. With this additional consideration, the results seemed to be in accord with previous research. Future research could focus on more efficient ways to test the reaction times of Stroop tasks involving auditory and visual stimuli, as well as different populations, especially neurodiverse and bilingual populations.

Abstract:
The link between Paris and Turkey was founded when both countries opened diplomatic relationships in the 17th century. Since then, the French culture, language and literature has been key to the Turkish intelligentsia, the first victim of the political instability the country is experiencing since 1960. Paris played the role of a window into the Western world, driving generations of writers to cultivate the myth of the Ville Lumière, city of love, revolutions and freedom. The debate on the place of Turkey in Europe justified a close look into the images of Paris in the contemporary Turkish literature. This study focused on three contemporary writers, who all worked under the shadow of Attilâ Ilhan the precursor, who died in 2005. Demir Özlü, the nauseated loner, for whom Paris will always remain an inaccessible dream, Nedim Gürsel, the prolix lover who turned the city into his mistress, and Enis Batur, the scientific explorer who observed each and every of its stones, have each in their own way placed Paris at the heart of their literary production. In doing so, they preserve the special status the French capital city enjoys in the Turkish collective imagination. Through their exiles and wanderings, they serve as a bridge between Turkey, whose traditions are grounded in the Middle-East, and Paris, which incarnates a Western world that is depicted either as flamboyant or decadent but will always remain obsessive. The fact that they are constantly split between two languages, cultures and places, Paris on the one hand, Istanbul and Turkey on the other hand, pulls them into a gnawing and permanent quest of their identity of human being and writer

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study the balance between relational and expressive messages on the image formation and projection of a document is studied. To study the effect of these messages, a case study was done on one of the donation letters of Stellenbosch University (SU). The purpose of the research was firstly to established what the image formation and projection of the SU was. The quality of the SU’s image and communication had to be determined. Secondly, the degree of attachment between die SU and respondents was measured to see if it had any influence on the way that they perceived the SU. The IFP-model (Image Formation and Projection model) served as a theoretical basis for the study – the model postulates that various document design aspects and concepts such as image, identitity and culture influence each other. The model was then used to a) identify problematic areas in the documentation b) form the basis of the questionnaire and c) explain the connection between the image formation and projection, and the style aspects in die document. The third goal of the research was to operationalize the relational and expressive messages by manipulating specific style aspects. The researcher had determined that the two messages were imbalanced in the original donation letter, to the extent that the reader did not have any real ‘presence’ in the document. The researcher then proceeded to design a second version of the donation letter, but with the relational and expressive messages brought into balance. Alumni of the SU were chosen as respondents for the study. The Stellenbosch Foundation distributed the questionnaires, along with the two versions of the letter. The researcher had decided upon e-mail as a distribution channel to discount any geographical bias. Two variables were used: Race (coloured and white persons) and age. Younger than 35 years of age, and 35 years of age or older than 35 were chosen as arbitrary cutoff points for respondents. The results were processed statistically so that trends and data could be displayed clearly. Results showed that alumni do have a positive image of the SU, as well as its communication. Alumni also feel reasonably connected to the SU. A strong preference was however shown for the redesigned donation letter, wherein the two messages are balanced out. This means that the SU’s image is projected in a more positive way in a document where the reader has a bigger presence.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie is daar ondersoek watter invloed ‘n wanbalans tussen die relasionele en ekspressiewe boodskappe in ‘n dokument op die beeldvorming en projeksie van daardie dokument het. Jonger as 35, en 35 of ouer as 35 is gekies as arbitrêre afsnypunt vir respondente.
