Abstract:
Feminist fractured foundationalism has been developed over a series of collaborative writings as a combined epistemology and methodology, although it has mainly been discussed in epistemological terms. It was operationalised as a methodology in a joint research project in South Africa concerned with investigating two important ways that the experiences of children in the South African War 1899-1902, in particular in the concentration camps established during its commando and ‘scorched earth’ phase, were represented contemporaneously: in the official records, and in photography. The details of the research and writing process involved are provided around discussion of the nine strategies that compose feminist fractured foundationalism and its strengths and limitations in methodological terms are reviewed.

Abstract:
He had died ignominiously and swiftly of pneumonia following measles, without ever having gotten any closer to the Yankees than the camp in South Carolina.(Mitchell 1960 [1936])Writing for an American audience in the 1930s, Margaret Mitchell was able to dispatch the husband of Scarlett O’Hara with a certain irony. By then measles had become a childhood disease that was seldom fatal. During the nineteenth century, however, measles was not so lightly dismissed. Epidemics in populations with high proportions of susceptible individuals could be dangerous indeed. This article traces the history of measles in South Africa, showing how political and economic changes temporarily produced conditions that led to a devastating epidemic during the Boer War (1899–1902). It then compares the history of measles in South Africa with that in Great Britain and closes with a discussion of the relationship between human and biological causes in the history of the disease.

Abstract:
As part of its repressive programme, Franco’s regime significantly limited the publication of literature in Catalan, a language that was pejoratively reduced to the category of dialect. In that context, the decision of writing and editing books in Catalan during the military dictatorship (1939‐75) was itself an act of resistance. This article studies a series of testimonial narratives that were published in the late 1960s and early 1970s in Spain about French concentration camps, including Crist de 200.000 braços. Refugiats catalans als camps de concentració francesos (1968), by Agustí Bartra; El desgavell (1969), by Ferran Planes; and Cartes des dels camps de concentració (1972), by Pere Vives i Clavé. Testimonial narratives about French concentration camps already circulated in the countries where Spanish intellectuals were exiled. However, writers such as Bartra, Planes, Vives i Clavé (survivors of Argelès-sur-Mer, Saint-Cyprien and other French concentration camps) and some Catalan editors committed to the Republican cause were interested in telling their traumatic experiences to Spanish and Catalan readers living in Spain. Therefore, they undertook the task of editing these works although in many cases they were strongly censored. Taking this into account, the purpose of this article is to analyse some aspects of these editions in order to consider how their testimonial narratives remain in constant tension between two forces: Republican writers’ intention to show their own version of recent history and the Spanish government’s imposition of its own institutional and conservative official discourse.

Abstract:
In her poetry Nelly Sachs tried to overcome all obstaclesi in order to speak about the unspeakable. Words that could adequately embody the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps were lacking. Nevertheless, it was necessary to speak about the experience for the sake of both herself and other victims of the camps. Through her poetry Sachs tests the validity and strength of both traditional images and biblical stories about suffering and grace. Words and images enable her to touch the experiences of people. However, she questions the generally accepted meaning of words in German. Her use of language strives to be different and to draw the attention to both the difficulties and risks of writing authentic words with the necessary symbolic strength. Sachs’ mental fragility made her very vulnerable and caused her to walk on the edge of total silence. As a consequence of her vulnerability, she tried with her whole heart to gain Paul Celan’s sympathy for her way of writing and efforts to turn the events in the concentration camps into dignified and true poetry. The relationship between Celan and Sachs reveals that the true meaning of poetry in her life was a manner of survival. The differences between the two poets provide insight into the specific poetic laws at work in the poetry of Nelly Sachs.

Abstract:
In my interdisciplinary analysis of foodways which combines Gender Studies with Holocaust Studies, I aim to demonstrate the cultural and gendered significance of the wartime sharing of recipes among starving women prisoners in concentration camps. This study will further discuss the continuing importance of food talk and food writing in the aftermath of the Holocaust, with an emphasis on the memory work of Hungarian survivors and their descendants. Fantasy cooking and recipe creation, or “cooking with the mouth,” as it was called in many camps, was a way for many inmates to maintain their identities and connections to their ethnic and family history, a survival technique that may have influenced the depiction of food memories and their continuing role in the postwar memoir writing of survivor women. I will also examine the continued use of food talk as a genealogy of intergenerational remembrance and transmission in the post-memory writing of second-generation and even third-generation daughters and (very occasionally) sons of Hungarian origin. Studying multigenerational Holocaust alimentary writing has become particularly urgent today because we are approaching a biological and cultural caesura, at which juncture direct survivors will disappear and we will need new forms of transmission to reshape Holocaust memories for the future.

Abstract:
Around half a million Spanish exiles crossed the French border in the Pyrenees between January and February of 1939. They were looking for shelter in anticipation of the overthrow of the Spanish Second Republic. The reception of the exiles in France was rather hostile, and approximately a quarter of a million of them were locked up in internment or concentration camps that French authorities improvised or reactivated camps of WWI. The exiles were defeated and they were deprived of freedom and forced to live in insalubrious conditions. The refugees used writing and culture as a strategy to resist, and as a means to hang on to their personal, familial, social and ideological identities. As a result of their cultural activity, a wide range of newsletters and diaries were edited in the internment camps despite the scarcity of resources. The refugees used these writings as a means of entertainment but also to spread their own doctrines. This article analyzes some 30 newsletters produced by a variety of groups in the camps: political groups, which were mostly linked to the field of education, different intellectuals and members of the International Brigades. The main goal of this work is to disentangle how the newsletters were produced, discuss the aims of the different publications and show how the texts were circulated and exchanged within the internment camps. Ultimately, the purpose of this work is to demonstrate the meaning of these communications for their authors and their readers and examine how the texts were used to reconstruct their lost identity.

Abstract:
The article seeks to reflect on the question of "nature’s agency" in histories of violence. It thus revisits the choices and outcomes of Fascist policy in Libya by foregrounding the colony’s ecology. The determination to win a war on inhospitable terrain led to the regime’s decision to set up concentration camps for Bedouin tribes and their herds in the desert-like and semiarid areas of Cyrenaica, which in turn had a murderous effect on humans and animals. From there, the article moves on to the second phase of Italian conquest, when the defeat of the anticolonial resistance turned into a "conquest of nature", with the agricultural reclamation of the highlands of Cyrenaica for Italian settlers. These agricultural centers and their people, which might at first sight seem bucolic and benign, were just as injurious to the Bedouin ecology predating the Italian occupation as were the concentration camps. The conclusion ponders the moral imperatives in writing histories of Fascist violence and the openings for environmental history.

Abstract:
Michał Borwicz was a Polish poet, prose writer, and a publicist of Jewish origins. During the Nazi occupation he was resettled to the Lvov getto, and in the years 1942–1943 he was imprisoned in the Janowska concentration camp. He managed to escape and next he was active in the resistance movement. After the war as a director of the Jewish Historical Commission in Kraków he tried to collect and publish testimonies of the Holocaust survivors. In 1947 he decided to emigrate to France. In 1953 Borwicz defended his doctoral dissertation at the Sorbonne. The dissertation was published the same year. It presents writings of people “condemned to death” under Nazi occupation, and is considered a pioneer study of literature and writing practices in the camps and ghettos. Unfortunately the singularity of the author and the strength of his work are still underestimated.

Abstract:
The present article strives to analyze a sporting war short story The Boxer and The Death by Józef Hen as an exemplary piece of sports writing immersed in a historical context. Although there is no entrenched tradition of sports writing in the Polish literary expression, the story offers a very classic sports narrative anchored in the Holocaust reality. Following the presentation of the figure of Hen and providing historical background for sport in concentration camps, the author analyzes the story, focusing on its two main characters: Janusz Kominek and Walter Kraft, as well as the values and symbols they represent. It is also argued that The Boxer and The Death fulfills the criteria of a traditional western, melodramatic narrative, and conforms to Robert J. Higgs’s Adonic model of an athlete in literature.

Abstract:
Inheriting the unpublished story of a concentration camp experience implies accepting the moral duty of its interpretation. Comparing it with two others literary works on the same topic allows to build a reflection about the inevitable transformation undergone by a traumatic experience when you attempt to verbalize it. In effect, that comes down to say and convey an aporia. That is why resorting successfully to metaphor seems to be the most efficient way to endow this piece of life, unspeakable by itself, with a convincing rhetoric. Therefore, it is necessary to transpose the experience in order to manage to tell it, but also to make visible a past that comes back to conscience only in the form of pictures, while asserting its references to a reality inscribed into History. To succeed in such an attempt, the method consists first in elaborating a fiction from a lived reality, then in giving its writing a power of visualisation, and eventually in introducing into it an internal dialectic capable of causing in the reader the uprising of an ethical reflection. In fact, the truth of any testimony remains tributary of an identity that is built only at the occasion of a storytelling. Moreover, the text is written in the present and from mere memorial marks. Finally, even when History gives validation to its references, a dark part remains, which will always escape the articulated language. This questionning about what may give the concentration camp experience its strenght of impact then leads to suggest that, since the camp has been lived as an experimentation of defiguration, it is only by inscribing it into a poetic of incarnation, capable of restituting to the dead letter its explosive power, that the survivor will be able to reconquer a human face

Abstract:
This work tries to consider , based on the reading of testimonies of nazi and soviet camps survivors which have a literary dimension, the implication of literature in the effort of a writing to say the truth on camp experience. Thus , it provides a detailed analysis of narrative processes used by the various authors considered (primo levi, david rousset, robert antelme, tadeusz borowski, varlam chalamov and soljenitsyne) , and a more general perspective which studies the relationships of camp survivors with literature , when these survivors want to give a written testimony. The reading of this corpus rises other questions : the role of literary activities in the camps , the basic aspects of the camp institution (social structures of camppopulation , analysis of the role of ideology and beyond , a reflection on the nature of totalitarian regimes). This work tries to show the capacity of literature to present the truth of a decisive historical and political experience

Lamquin, Thomas. "Psychanalyse appliquée aux représentations picturales des camps de concentration nazis." Thesis, Paris 10, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA100023/document.

Abstract:
This thesis begins with noticing that pictorial representations (e.g. drawings or paintings etc.) in nazi concentration camps have been made by some subjets while imprisonment, in a massive traumatism, usually thinked as a non-representable situation. From a three drawers and drawings study, imcompletely by Andre Green’s applied psychoanalysis method, reflexion can occur with the hypothesis of a dissociated physical and psychic self-preservation in that context. To achieve this goal, historical nazi camps differed representations, massive traumatism and creation, are detailed in a psychoanalytic viewpoint with Freud, Ferenczi, Winnicott, Roussillon, Green, Bertrand, Zaltzman, Cerf de Duzeele, Waintrater and Cupa as main authors. Results show the existence of an intermediate space that enabled these subjets to keep a specific representational activity. It’s mainly a representation work of the camp overreality in a psychic self-preservation way. This work is an internal and external connection work, in a culture and filiation link, that struggles against drive defusion. Eternity and omnipotent fantasy, libidinal coexcitation underly drawings and pictorial activity. They interrogate about a possible sublimation

Abstract:
This thesis aims at probing the possibility of a literature on concentration camps. The first part copes with general questions such as the characteristics of a literature on concentration camps and gives a presentation of works pertaining to this category. The second chapter examines five conceptions illustrating the commun points and the diverge nces of the various historical and literary interpretations of concentration camps. The last chapter shows the specific features of each author through a study of their textes. This chapter is further divided in four subparts distinguishing the analysis of works by direct witness like antelme, chalamov, levi, rousset and wiesel, that of novels by gary and merle who have not personally experienced concentration camps, the study of solzhenitsyn's the gulag archipelago, and that of claude lanzmann's film, shoah. Throughout this inquiry we will try, by studing the fonctions which a literature on concentration camps can have, inscribe the singularity of the questions aroused bu the existence of concentration camps in the universality of the answers provided

Abstract:

Abstract:
A few works belonging to camp literature genre are viewed as a proof of an indissoluble connection between the theme of love and faith and the theme of concentration camps. The basis of the thesis is a work by a psychologist and former concentration camp prisoner Viktor Frankl.

Abstract:
Additive manufacturing or 3D printing of short carbon fiber composites is highly inclined toward thermoplastic material. Recently, there is some interest in developing 3D printing technology for thermosetting polymers and composites. Direct-ink-writing (DIW) of short fiber epoxy composites containing milled carbon fibers (MCF) exhibits the potential to replace the traditional composite material as it showcases the inherent capability of fabricating complex geometries, facile material processing, continuous printing capability coupled with low cost. Previous research in 3D printing of short carbon fiber epoxy composites suffered heavily from the limitation of printing low carbon fiber weight concentrations. This study developed a straightforward technique of designing the epoxy ink containing high weight concentration MCF (~40wt%) and a small concentration of thixotropic filler (3-wt%) for DIW using a pneumatic pressure-driven extruder having micron size tapered nozzle. This paper also intends to contribute to a better understanding of the effect of printing parameters on DIW. Furthermore, the printing parameters were optimized using non-dimensionalized constant C. Optimized printing condition was further used to print different geometry ranging from dog bone with 100% infill to 4-layer hollow circle and 3-layer hollow square with 0% infill. Lastly, ink exhibits the capability to self-support multi-layer geometrical structures during printing.

Abstract:
In-fiber grating writing based on the photorefractive effect is now attracting considerable interest [1]. However, photosensitivity of standard germanosilicate fibres with a moderate concentration of germanium in the core (5 ÷ 7 mol.% GeO2) is not large and does not allow efficient writing of refractive index gratings. To increase the writing efficiency, one has to increase the germanium concentration and/or load the fibre with hydrogen [2]. Increasing the germanium concentration results in a reduction of the mode spot size and in additional losses when the fibre is spliced with a standard telecommunication fibre. Hydrogen loading complicates the grating technology and raises losses in the IR region owing to the OH-group absorption. Therefore, optimization of the grating writing technology and development of novel types of photosensitive fibres are now high on the agenda.

Abstract:
n the eighty’s poetry from the left of the Prut, a kind of self-referential writing is highlighted, defined by literary exegesis by the term textual narcissism (Cristian Moraru). This own lyrical manner belongs the poets Emilian GalaicuPăun and Nicolae Leahu and It supposes the concentration on one’s own linguistic resources and their experimentation in the field of language. The developed lyrical constructions, frequently used in the work of these poets, they bring language games, quotations, allusions, parodies, rewritings, etc. Although, both poets don’t ignore the ideational plan, which an attentive reader can perceive, the finality of their writing consists, however, in the creating of the discourse, which It detaches itself from any other reality and It exists autonomously, being self-sufficient. Thus, such a poem returns the myth of Narcissus, stating the concept of self-referential and self-contemplative writing.

Abstract:
The writing of fiber Bragg gratings through the coating has important implications for the mass production of these devices. For instance, the time-consuming steps of stripping and recoating of the grating (potentially leading to fiber strength degradation), can be completely eliminated resulting in a simpler, more efficient and lower cost fabrication process. In the first demonstration of writing Bragg gratings through the coating, up to ~3 dB Bragg gratings were written through a UV-transparent acrylate-based 25 μm thick coating at 257 nm [1]. Subsequently, other researchers demonstrated a ~1 dB fiber Bragg grating written through a standard coating using 334 nm light [2]. Because the absorption band at 334 nm is much weaker than at 244 nm, these gratings required a very high germanium concentration (~20 mol%) and the addition of boron as a codopant to increase the photosensitivity of the fiber. The high level of germanium makes it difficult to achieve low-loss splices to standard communications grade fiber. Here we report for the first time highly reflective (99.99% Reflectivity, -40 dB transmission) Bragg gratings written through a novel polymer coating using a photosensitive germanium-doped fiber with 5 mole% germania.

Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, highly flexible nanocomposite sensors have been developed for the detection of a variety of human body movements. To precisely detect the bending motions of human joints, the sensors must be able to conform well with the human skin and produce signals that effectively describe the amount of deformation applied to the material during bending. In this paper, a carbon nanotube-based piezoresistive strain sensor is developed via the direct ink writing based embedded 3D printing method. The optimum weight concentration range of carbon nanotubes in the nanocomposite inks, appropriate for embedded 3D printing, is identified. Samples with complex 2D and 3D geometries are printed to demonstrate the manufacturing capabilities of the embedded printing process. The sensitivity of the piezoresistive strain sensor is optimized by determining the ideal nanofiller concentration, curing temperature, and nozzle size to produce the highest gauge factor in a wide strain range. The piezoresistive and mechanical properties of the optimized sensors are fully characterized to verify the suitability for skin-attachable strain sensing applications. The developed sensors have a wide sensing range, high sensitivity, and minimal strain rate dependence. In addition, their low elasticity and high biocompatibility allow them to be comfortably bonded on the human skin.

Abstract:
Abstract The macro-porous ceramics has promising durability and thermal insulation performances. A cost-effective and scalable additive manufacturing technique for the fabrication of macro-porous ceramics, with a facile approach to control the printed porosity is reported in the paper. Several ceramic inks were prepared, the foaming agent was used to generate gaseous bubbles in the ink, followed by the direct ink writing and the ambient-pressure and room-temperature drying to create the three-dimensional geometries. The experimental studies were performed to optimize the printing quality. A set of studies revealed the optimal printing process parameters for printing the foamed ceramic ink with a high spatial resolution and fine surface quality. Varying the concentration of the foaming agent enabled the controllability of the structural porosity. The maximum porosity can reach 85%, with a crack-free internal porous structure. The tensile tests showed that the printed macro-porous ceramics have enhanced durability with the addition of fiber. With a high-fidelity 3D printing process and precise control of the porosity, the printed samples exhibited a low thermal conductivity and high mechanical strength.

Abstract:
Abstract We report on a quantitative investigation of doping-induced contrast and topography-induced contrast in photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM). Calibration samples were fabricated using standard photolithography and focused ion beam writing to test both types of contrast. Using a near-threshold light source, we find that the doping-induced contrast increases monotonically with B concentration over the measured range of 1017 – 2x1020 cm-3. The variation in doping-induced contrast as incident photon energy is varied was also investigated. Optimal doping-induced contrast and PEEM sensitivity is achieved by imaging with photon energy slightly above the highest nominal photothreshold of interest. The photoemission model, based on near-threshold emission, used to describe doping-induce contrast gives good agreement with the measured intensities. Thus, measuring the relative intensity ratio provides a robust technique for determining doping levels. Topography-induced contrast was investigated by imaging Ti samples of various step heights (75, 150, 290, and 550 nm). Image data suggests that edge contrast increases with step height. Numerical simulations show that non-uniform electrostatic fields at step edge are responsible for this contrast. Experimentally, we systematically vary the lateral field strength and show that edge contrast can be controlled. This technique could be useful in failure analysis by identifying breaks in metal lines.

Abstract:
One of the leading Western Ukrainian diaspora journals – London «Liberation Way», founded in January 1949, has become the subject of the study for the first time in journalism. Archival documents and materials of the Ukrainian Publishing Union in London and the British National Library (British Library) were also observed. The peculiarities of the magazine’s formation and the specifics of the editorial policy, founders and publishers are clarified. A group of OUN members who survived Hitler’s concentration camps and ended up in Great Britain after the end of World War II initiated the foundation of the magazine. Until April 1951, including issue 42, the Board of Foreign Parts of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists were the publishers of the magazine. From 1951 to the beginning of 2000 it was a socio-political monthly of the Ukrainian Publishing Union. From the mid-60’s of the twentieth century – a socio-political and scientific-literary monthly. In analyzing the programmatic principles of the magazine, the most acute issues of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, which have long separated the forces of Ukrainian emigration and from which the founders and publishers of the magazine from the beginning had clearly defined positions, namely: ideology of Ukrainian nationalism, the idea of unity of Ukraine and Ukrainians, internal inter-party struggle among Ukrainian emigrants have been singled out. The review and systematization of the thematic palette of the magazine’s publications makes it possible to distinguish the following main semantic accents: the formation of the nationalist movement in exile; historical Ukrainian themes; the situation in sub-Soviet Ukraine; the problem of the unity of Ukrainians in the Western diaspora; mission and tasks of Ukrainian emigration in the context of its responsibilities to the Motherland. It also particularizes the peculiarities of the formation of the author’s assets of the magazine and its place in the history of Ukrainian national journalism.
