Abstract. Words whose articulation resembles ingestion movements are preferred to words mimicking expectoration movements. This so-called in-out effect, suggesting that the oral movements caused by consonantal articulation automatically activate concordant motivational states, was already replicated in languages belonging to Germanic (e.g., German and English) and Italic (e.g., Portuguese) branches of the Indo-European family. However, it remains unknown whether such preference extends to the Indo-European branches whose writing system is based on the Cyrillic rather than Latin alphabet (e.g., Ukrainian), or whether it occurs in languages not belonging to the Indo-European family (e.g., Turkish). We replicated the in-out effect in two high-powered experiments ( N = 274), with Ukrainian and Turkish native speakers, further supporting an embodied explanation for this intriguing preference.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the first half of the 17th century penmanship in the Dutch Republic flourished as never before or since. Responsible for this flowering were a number of schoolmasters from Brabant and Flanders who in the 1570s and 80s had fled to the North and had settled there as writing-masters. To what level they had raised calligraphy may be seen from a large number of manuscript and printed writing-books that have been preserved. Just as they inspired their followers in years to come they had themselves found a source of inspiration in the two copy-books of Clemens Perret, brought out in 1569 and 1571. The earlier of these, the Exercitatio alphabetica, was not only the first ever to be reproduced entirely by copper engraving, but also the first with examples in seven languages, all of them written in the appropriate hands. Moreover in this book, the first to be produced in the Low Countries in such a large, oblong size, all plates had lavishly executed borders, designed on an architectural framework on which a variety of objects, human figures, grotesques, animals and so on were depicted. The book was obviously designed for collectors, wealthy connoisseurs and fellow writing-masters. The later book, the Eximiae peritiae alphabetum, although containing an equal number of plates, likewise in seven languages and in various hands, lacks the beautiful borders and is of slightly smaller size. It is altogether a more modestly conceived book, surely intended for use at school. Little is known about Perret's life. The title-pages of his books tell us that he was born in Brussels in 1551. A poem in a writing-book by Jacobus Houthusius, published in 1591, refers to his death. A contemporary manuscript note in a pamphlet of 1583 states that the writer Etienne Perret was his father. In the Plantin archives it is recorded that he had a brother, named Paul, and a sister. In a pamphlet of 1599 the writing-master Jan van den Velde states that Perret went to England to serve Queen Elizabeth's Chancellor as writing-master and teach the Queen the Italian hand. This seems unlikely as the Queen is known to have learned italic handwriting from Roger Ascham, while still a girl. The author has examined 26 copies of the Exercitatio in public collections and distinguishes two different editions. The first was probably brought out by Perret himself. Nearly all its plates contain errors in spelling, punctuation and word division. When Plantin took the distribution of the book in hand these mistakes were corrected and another plate added, containing within an engraved border a privilege with the text in letterpress: the 2nd edition. A variant of this edition is identical but for the privilege which is now engraved. The 2nd edition, corrected

ABSTRACT Detection of foreign words is intended to help in reducing errors in the writing of scientific papers and thesis statements as of workmanship. There are rules in writing scientific papers that document must meet the rules of Indonesian rule of good writing and really one of them is use of italics in the word foreign languages (English). Therefore, made an application to aid in the detection of foreign words so as to tilt the letters that do not exist in the governance of the Indonesian word. In the making of the application, the fuzzy search method used for detecting foreign word using levenshtein edit distance matrix to calculate the distance semblance of a word. Fuzzy search conducted with fuzzy matching which returns a list of results based on the variables that have been determined. A fuzzy search using a matrix with levenshtein represented distance to calculate the distance of the similarity of the word, so will produce a word that has italic style and not if there is in Indonesian grammar. From the test results, the use of fuzzy search algorithms to detect foreign words in a word document with a different number of words resulted in an average accuracy value of 89.6%. The results of this process makes this application can help foreign grammar in writing scientific papers. How to Cite : Taufik, I. Aishia,I.D. Jumadi.J. (2017). Three versions of the abstract of the report have survived (on the backs, in cursive writing by Shpet, the debate on the report is also written). The version presented here – the third – is written in black ink (fol. 13–17). It contains three layers of editing: adding and correcting with a simple pencil (in the margins), lilac pencil (correcting pagination), red (adding in the margins), and underlining in red and blue pencil (this way of underlining is peculiar to Shpet, who thus marked all his oral presentations; these stresses are not reproduced due to their multiplicity). The text is given in the last edition with the introduction of corrections made by Shpet’s hand using different pencils. Abstract:
Pascal Quignard creates a structure in pieces in Terrasse à Rome, using a process close to the plastic arts: collage. Collage refers to the introduction into a work of fragments that do not belong to it (excerpts from literary texts, italic writing, foreign writing, inventory, biblical verses, etc. ) An immanent approach will highlight a fragmented novel structure in which there is a narrative and textual diffraction. The objective of this study is to explain the role of the collage technique in creating a hybrid and heterogeneous effect that requires the reader's participation to bring together the scattered elements of the story being told. Keywords: collage - heteroclite - hybrid - reader-reconstitution.

Abstract:
The mission of the English Project (www.englishproject.org) is to explore and explain the English language in order to educate and entertain the English speaker, and 2015 was the year of punctuation for the Project because 6 February 2015 was the 500th anniversary of the death of Aldus Manutius. Aldus was a Venetian printer who shaped the comma, invented the semicolon and created italic fonts. He may have been the greatest punctuator of all time. We ‘punctuated’ the year by looking in turn at the full stop, the semicolon, the colon, the comma, the slash, the hyphen, the parenthesis, the exclamation, the apostrophe, the quotation mark and the question mark. Those twelve provide the fundamentals of English language punctuation, and all of them do more than one job. If we had a complete and unambiguous set of punctuation marks, we might need as many as 50, but the writing world does not want the trouble of such precision. In just same way, the writing world has never accepted the need for 44 separate letters to match the 44 separate sounds of the English language. Providing a separate grapheme (letter) for every phoneme (sound) is the linguist's business. Punctuation marks are ambiguous therefore. They suggest rather than define. They rely on context and the quick wittedness of the reader. If precision is needed, there are proofreader's marks. Merriam-Webster lists 42 of them, but proofreading is a special practice. Punctuation marks are a special set of symbols, and of symbols and signs there is no end. Punctuation marks are regularly appropriated by the devisers of computer languages. Punctuation marks can become logotypes – ‘a single piece of type that prints a word’. The exclamation mark can be made to work like &, $, or @. There are fuzzy edges to the subject of punctuation.

The interview is devoted to Gustaw Herling-Grudziński. The writer’s daughter, Marta, talks about her father, particularly focusing on the Italian contexts of his biography and writings. Also discussed is the problem of the writer’s attitude towards the Italian language and the reception of his works in Italy. Another important topic is Naples as a fascinating source of writing inspirations and, at the same time, the city where Herling-Grudziński happened to live and die.

Abstract:
Andrea Camilleri (1925–2019), one of the most prominent contemporary Italian writers, made a name for himself and won extraordinary popularity with readers as an author of crime fiction, including novels and short stories. Italian literary critics regard him as an undisputed master of Italian mystery writing. The paper seeks to synthetise the available data on the reception of Camilleri’s work in Poland by the end of 2021. The argument begins with an outline of Camilleri’s life and work, which is followed by a survey of the studies of his writings. These findings are complemented with statistics concerning his books on the Polish publishing market. Camilleri’s writing and publishing career represents an interesting research field that has been explored by Polish scholars for more than twenty years now. His fiction, which found its way into Poland with a considerable delay, has since garnered the appreciation of both readers and literary critics, as well as inviting interest from the media. Camilleri’s art as a novelist has also drawn the attention of Polish scholars, primarily literature researchers.

Abstract:
As in the United States and in many countries across Europe, the quiz show was a founding genre for Italian television as far back as the 1950s: because of their broad appeal, such game shows as Lascia o raddoppia and Il musichiere contributed strongly to television’s burgeoning popularity during the subsequent decades. Since then, the quiz show has traversed different eras of television history, with partial and gradual changes to its textual features, aesthetics and narratives, as well as its production routines. Since the 1980s, with deregulation and the advent of commercial television, the Italian game-show market has become more international and more reliant on formats. In the genre’s long history, the “hidden profession” of writing TV games exhibits elements of both continuity and change. The needs of format-adaptation have highlighted two main areas of “localization”: question-writing and casting. This essay explores the profession of game-show writer in Italy and how the role has evolved. It adopts a historical framework to illuminate the continuity and change in the profession, in relation to a broader history of both the genre and the television medium, while also seeking to outline both the specificity of the Italian TV context and its connections with an international environment.

Modality expresses high probability and total degree through boosters (Halliday 1985,Holmes 1990). Through them, writers reinforce statements with the assurance of reliableknowledge (cf. Hyland 1998b). This study compares the usage of boosting emphasizers (e.g. certainly) and intensifiers (e.g. completely) (cf. Quirk et al. 1985) and their orientation and manifestation (cf. Halliday & Matthiessen 2014) in Albanian and Italian student academic writings in L1 and English as an L2. I compiled an Italian and an Italian English corpus (around 3 million words each) as well as an Albanian corpus (around 2.2 million words) and Albanian English one (around 700,000 words). The corpora are comparable in terms of genre, disciplinary domain, gender and the division of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ sciences. Since very little research has been conducted on academic writing in Albania (Toska 2015), it is essential to initiate research in this field. The results showed that boosters were significantly favored in Italian and Italian English and less favored in Albanian. Conclusively, Italians show more commitment than Albanians.

"Italy in the Writings of Dominique Fernandez: The Sacralization of a Profane Space. For Dominique Fernandez, writing about Italy is associated with a quest for original androgyny. The Italian space supports a return to a primitive existence. Synonymous with freedom and sexual undifferentiation, it allows us to find prelapsarian paradise, where the boundaries between the sexes did not exist. Mircea Eliade’s works follow the same logic. Indeed, the author studies the nostalgia for the origins which incites man to discover the mythical primordial era sanctified by the gods. Hence, this article blends the historical-religious endeavor with the literary approach which, though unable to go back in time, keeps repeating it indefinitely, thanks to the demiurgic power of the writer. Abstract:
This article examines a corpus of over forty Italian civic histories produced from the mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century, when the wealth of many of the peninsula's inhabitants increased significantly. Evidence from this corpus demonstrates that attitudes about wealth in historical writing changed over time and argues for a shift from a more static to a more dynamic representation of material goods in these texts. The novel mechanisms for accruing wealth that developed in the Italian urban context were important factors in the historigraphic turn, but as the period wore one, changes in the types of people writing history also contributed to modified presentations of wealth in their writings. Whether describing the display of luxury or its regulation, civic improvements or the destruction of a town's buildings by warring factions, taxation in a city or the corruption of its offiicials, views towards material goods in medieval Italian urban histories were neither wholly positive nor negative. Rather, the historiographic value of material goods was complex. The frequency with which wealth was a topic of discussion in civic histories highlights how the peninsula's inhabitants were coming to terms with the influx of wealth and the material goods they could acquire as members of their urban communities.

The paper analyses the use of Italian as a literary language in the literature of European travel to the Ottoman Empire during the late Ranaissance. The choice of Italian will be explained as the link between its diffusion in Europe as a language of culture and its practical uses in the Mediterranean as a diplomatic and commercial code or as a tool of religious propaganda. During the late Renaissance, travels to the Ottoman Empire were the continuation of theperegrinatio academicaand theGrand Tourto Italy of high-educated European scholars. In light of this premises, I will present different versions, both manuscripts and in print, of the multilingualrelationeby the Pole Wojciech Bobowski (1610-1675), musician and dragoman in the Ottoman Empire, who wrote a description of the Topkapi Palace for European readers in Italian.

AbstractThis article examines Leonardo Bruni's ideas on history writing, tracing their evolution from 1404 down to the latter half of 1443. It establishes that Bruni saw history writing as a textual activity closely related to, if not identical with, translation. The various implications of this discovery are explored in relation to several of Bruni's major historical works, including the Cicero novus (1415), the Commentarii de primo bello punico (1419), and the De bello italico (1441). The article concludes by showing how Bruni's views - in their final, extreme formulation - were challenged by his younger rival, Biondo Flavio, in the early 1440s.

Abstract:
Abstract This study explores the reading and writing practices of Joseph Ha-Kohen, a sixteenth-century Jewish chronicler from Genoa, against the background of his Italian and Spanish sources: in what ways and why did he adapt, change or subvert their narratives? It focuses on two of Ha-Kohen’s major works: his Franco-Turkish Chronicle, and his Hebrew adaptation of López de Gómara’s account of the Spanish conquests in the Americas. Based on these writings, the essay asks how the author’s Sephardic identity and migration experience inform his ideas about the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires. Notably, the Jewish chronicler applauds the Ottomans’ conversion of churches into mosques, while he condemns the forced Christianization of the Amerindians. At the same time, Ha-Kohen shares cultural attitudes with Gómara and voices qualified support for a Spanish civilizing mission. These ambiguities in Ha-Kohen’s writings—oscillating between praise and repudiation of imperial ideology—prove to be emblematic of post-expulsion Sephardic Jewry.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article offers a detailed investigation of Byzantine and post-Byzantine perceptions of the political organization of the Italian city-states. Drawing on philosophical and historical writing produced by Byzantine and post-Byzantine authors between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, it identifies the main patterns and motifs that informed Byzantine discourse about the constitutional arrangements of such Italian cities as Genoa, Venice, Florence, and Milan. It shows how these come into play in the writings of major figures of Byzantine and post-Byzantine intellectual life such as Theodoros Metochites, John Kantakouzenos, Nikephoros Gregoras, George of Trebizond, Cardinal Bessarion, Laonikos Chalkokondyles, and John Kottunios. It also explores the ways in which the classical legacy of political thought was applied by Byzantine writers in their analysis of various constitutional forms. The findings of this survey provide new insights into cross-cultural exchanges between the Byzantine world and medieval and early modern Europe and the formation of Byzantine identity.

Abstract:
The paper presents the results of a survey conducted in the academic year 2018/2019 among students of Italian Studies at the University of Wroclaw on metacognitive self-consciousness concerning Italian writing proficiency. The questions concerned the students' practice of written forms of expression in their private lives; the contribution (actual or anticipated) of writing proficiency in their current and future professional career; and the evaluation of the teaching of writing proficiency within the university curriculum of Italian Studies. The study was qualitative and conducted from an emic perspective, involving students in metacognitive reflection. The results of the study indicate limited metacognitive self-consciousness on the part of the students of Italian Studies, who are not, however, devoid of any criticism of the practical Italian language course curriculum.

Abstract:
Italia for ages attracted representatives of all sorts nations with unique geographical advantages, diversified nature, richness of the works of art, architecture. The Poles have been enjoying its cultural, artistic, and scientific achievements for over eight centuries. They left their tracks there in the form of archive records, literature, works of art, necropolis. They were also promoting Polish culture in Italy, in both individual and institutional actions. The author presented a few Poles and Polish institutions, which introduced Polish literature and culture into Italian cultural life in the 20 century. These are mostly scholars, historians, librarians, writers. A few of them are quite well-known and described in literature (e.g. Karolina Lanckorońska, Roman Pollak). However, many others have not been an object of in-depth studies, including Józef Feliks Michałowski, Jan Władysław Woś, Ryszard K. Lewański or the Adam Mickiewicz Academy of Polish and Slavic Literatures and History in Bologne and the Attilio Behey Institute of Polish Culture in Turin. The output of the Polish community abroad, being maintained in Italian libraries and archives, confirms both the value of common cultural background, and permament engagement of the Poles in strengthening and popularization of the Polish writing legacy in Italy.
