Abstract:
This study was written to see the effect of picture strategy inductive model (PWIM) and student self-efficacy to their skills in writing descriptive text. This research is a quasi-experimental design with factorial design. This research data is taken from the result of student writing skill test and self-efficacy questionnaire. Then, the data were analyzed by using t-test and two-way Anova through Minitab 14 application. The results of this study indicate that PWIM strategy has a significant effect on students' writing skill when compared with listing strategy used by teachers in writing teaching. The result shows a t count of 1,900 which is larger than the t-table that is worth 1.684. Then, students with high self-efficacy taught with the PWIM strategy have a better ability to write descriptive text than students taught with a listing strategy, where t counts are 3.160 which is greater than t-tables of 1.812. However, students with low self-efficacy taught by the PWIM strategy do not have a better ability to write descriptive text than students taught by a listing strategy that t-counts 1.730 smaller than t-tables of 1.812 . Furthermore, from the results of the study also found that there is no interaction between teaching strategies with self-efficacy to the writing skills of students where F-count is 0.08 higher than the F-table is 2.58.

Abstract:
In order to raise speed of reading data from disk array memory, scientific and technological personnel have introduced cache technology into disk array. Since this technique has been invented, although the efficiency of reading data have been solved, after writing operation of countless times in disk cache, data consistency problem has been prominent expression. Especially in this condition that false of electricity and machine abnormal failure, the consistency of the data is more difficult to guarantee. In this paper, we adopt Non-Volatile RAM (NVRAM) devices to realize that the data will not be lost in disk array cache after power failure. Here we design a kind of new cache organizational structure. We firstly introduce cache structure of two tables (real-time mapping table, backup mapping table) and a cache backup block. Then through these two tables, we can work to recover data through the copy between the two tables in the macroscopic, and in the microscopic through cache backup block can backup the cache data from writing failure. As power failure and system breakdown, we can ensure that data will not easily lose and the original data can recovery after system crash by this technology. Thus it ensures the consistency of the data cache.

Abstract:
This study places the recently excavated ninth-century A.D. four-part calendrical notations at Xultun (Lunar Table, Ring Number, Long Count, and Multiplication Table) in the context of both Classic monumental inscriptions and astronomical knowledge in the Postclassic Dresden Codex. We demonstrate that the Lunar Table employed a formula attributed to Palenque and that it could have been used as a device to determine precisely where to break the sequence of alternating 29- and 30-day months one finds on dated monuments. All four categories found at Xultun appear in the Dresden Codex. The Ring Number, which bridges a date in the deep past with one in the recently completed era, is a perfect fit with one of the most fundamental Dresden eclipse cycles. Our analysis of glyphs accompanying the Long Count date enables us to place candidate eclipses, especially one that corresponds with a conjunction of Mars, in real time. We argue that the large multiples were extracted from, or prepared for, warning tables like the Dresden eclipse table, and we demonstrate why such tables must have existed well before the Xultun inscriptions. Thus, while the writings in the Dresden manuscript constitute a finished product, the writing on the wall of residential Structure 10K-2 is more akin to what one might find in an astronomer's notebook.

Abstract:
This study was aimed at finding out whether the implementation of picture series strategy can improve the ability of the students in writing narrative text. The research design was collaborative action research which consisted of two cycles, in where cycle 1 consisted of three meetings and cycle 2 consisted of four meetings. A cycle consisted of four steps namely: planning the action, acting on the plan, observing the action and reflecting on the observation. The subject of the study was the 34 students. The instruments used to collect data were observation checklist, field notes, questionnaires, scoring rubrics and the students’ writings. The data from the observation, scoring rubrics and questionnaires were analyzed and the results are presented in the form of tables and description, while the data gained from the field notes and the students’ writings were analyzed and reported descriptively. The result of the study showed that the picture series effectively improved the students’ ability in writing narrative texts. All students had reached the minimum score of 3. Moreover, the majority of the students gave positive responses towards the implementation of picture series, in the case that 70% of the students showed excitement. Furthermore, they found that picture series is interesting, easy to understand, moreover, it helped them to organize paragraphs and develop ideas in writing narrative texts. Abstract:
Abstract In current debates the media, policy makers and scientists are aiming to identify factors explaining negative trends in the orthography competencies of German primary school students. Especially a concept making use of initial sound tables and the method “reading by writing“ is often identified as a core factor. However empirical studies backing these claims are rare and contradictory. Also very little is known about the actual use of initial sound tables in primary schools. In this article we provide an overview of empirical studies on the effectiveness of the use of initial sound tables and the concept “reading by writing“. We then present data from a short teacher survey on the use of initial sound tables in German classes, which was realized as an extension to the PIRLS 2016 and is therefore representative for German primary schools. According to this survey about 70 % of all Grade 4 learners of 2016 have been exposed to initial sound tables as part of their German lessons throughout primary school. About half of these learners were asked to work almost every lesson with these tables in their first one-half years of schooling. We also find that teachers who work with sound tables differ in their beliefs about when student’s spelling mistakes should be corrected. In addition we find that the majority of teachers report to combine the use of sound tables with other materials, such as basic readers. We argue especially this finding should guide future designs of studies aiming to compare the effectiveness of different methods as most of the current studies possibly wrongly assume a distinctive or at least dominant use of initial sound tables or basic readers.

Abstract:
Archaeological investigations into the whereabouts of the Alder Creek Donner family campsite yielded a number of artifacts. One type of artifact collected was writing slate fragments, the topic of this thesis. Why were writing slate fragments found at the Alder Creek camp? An investigation into writing slate in the historical record had to be conducted to address this question. The lack of pertinent research associated with writing slate posed a major obstacle, as it has been disregarded as a diagnostic artifact in historical archaeological literature. This paper addresses this problem by a history of writing slate and its uses, as well as including a discussion of precursors to writing slate, to provide a context for materials recovered from the Alder Creek site. It was first thought that writing slate was only used in the context of education, as might have provided a means of keeping the children busy during the Donner Partys snowbound experience. However, this research indicates that a number of other activities can be associated with writing slate; including messages and notes, record keeping and accounting, gaming and gambling. The writing slate recovered from the Donner family camp is analyzed here using the results of the historical overview of this material and a cognitive archaeological approach.

Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to explore pre-service teachers' integration of tablet technology in reading, comprehension and writing instruction. As global technological use continues to soar, a large absence in the availability of tablet technology in the public schools continues, and reflects a glaring disparity between the technological uses inside and outside of education.

Within a qualitative paradigm, two theoretical frameworks guided this study -- phenomenology and transformative learning (TL) theory. The researcher conducted three sets of interviews of 14 pre-service teachers. This study was guided by four research questions regarding pre-service teachers' descriptions of using technology integration in delivering reading, comprehension, and writing instruction using tutorials. The study explored the extent to which pre-service teachers employed tablet technology during learning activities. Data collected included an interview of the interpretive researcher, tutoring lesson plans, cadre conferencing blogs, and final case study reflections. Data was analyzed using Saldana's (2013) holistic coding methods and Giorgi's (1994) four-step analysis process.

From the four research questions, ten essential themes emerged from pre-service teachers' lived experiences of integration of tablet technology: (a) generational learning shift, (b) cognitive disassociation with learning, (c) paradox of gaming, (d) technological disinclination, (e) critical thinking and problem solving, (f) self-generated learning, (g) collective brain and partnership, (h) collaborative creativity, (i) reluctance in integration of technology with writing, and (j) academic and recreational convenience. These themes revealed both positive shifts in the processing of innovative technology and literacy instruction, and challenges that must be overcome if pre-service teachers are to help students reach their full potential in the 21st century. An analysis of transformative learning theory (Mezirow, 1978, 1991, 2000), revealed five pre-service teachers who experienced the ten stages while another nine who experienced partial transformative learning stages.

The findings have implications for the restructuring of teacher education programs. Pre-service teachers require continued increases of their technological, pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK), as well as greater development of their writing skills. An increase in the transformation of pre-service teachers' skillsets and mindsets can be facilitated with explicit technological integration of literacy instruction to prepare them to improve student learning outcomes.

Komperlla, Mahesh Kumar. "The formulation and evaluation of rapid release tablets manufactured from Artemisia Afra plant material." Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2004. http://etd.uwc.ac.za/index.php?module=etd&amp.

Full text
Abstract:

Infusions, decoctions, alcoholic preparations and other dosage forms of Artemisia afra are frequently used in South African traditional medicine. Generally when these preparations are made without applying good manufacturing practices they do not meet microbial quality control standards, safety and toxicity criteria and encourage poor patients compliance. To overcome the aforementioned disadvantages of traditional dosage forms a sold dosage form, i.e. a table might be recommended. The first objective of this study was to formulate and manufacture a rapid release tablet dosage of Artemisia afra that would contain an amount of plant material equivalent to that found in its traditional liquid dosage forms and that would meet conventional pharmaceutical standards. The second objective was to conduct a pilot study to obtain a preliminary profile of the bioavailability of select flavonoids presents in both the tablet and traditional liquid preparation of Artemisia afra in humans.

Abstract:
Rousseau's reflections on the spectacle (whether theatrical, musical or pictorial) are elaborated through a number of theoretical texts that question the status of the spectator and his relationship with what is seen and heard. This relationship is a source of numerous questions for the writer who reflects on what could be termed an 'economy of distance' , so as to better adjust the way he looks on the object mis en scène and to regulate the emotions provoked by the structure of the spectacle. This approach to the spectacle also allows us to explore Rousseau's approach to origins as it seems that it is from his conception of nature that the notion of the spectacle and the emotions it provokes are developed. Emotional quality is particularly explored by Rousseau who distinguishes the visual spectacle from the auditory one: to the fascination of the image created by the theatrical setting is opposed the musical sentiment, seen both as a source of ideal communication between the musician and the listener, as well as the creator of a mental spectacle. Such is the importance of the musical spectacle that the writing of Rousseau is not conceived without a constant reference to its characteristics. The writer thus becomes a listener of music subjugated by the sentiments he feels. These reflections on spectacles find an echo in the narrative works of Rousseau that apply those characteristics identified by his theory. Influenced by the aesthetics of the theatrical tableau conceptualised by Diderot and reflecting on the bourgeois drama, Rousseau tempers his suspicion concerning different types of theatrical images that according to him find their best expression in the way of looking. The Nouvelle Héloïse goes at times beyond the linearity of writing to propose certain tableaux that borrow from the estampe and the bourgeois drama. The reader is thus transformed into a spectator of a bourgeois drama, but not exclusively so: indeed, the representation in images of the narrative draws equally on pictorial sources (with in particular the considerations on the Sujets d'estampes) and offers a reflection on the looks assumed by the majority of characters. But, above all, it is by seeking inspiration in his own musical concepts that Rousseau is led to finding new forms of writing that renew the relationship to the reader. Indeed, the autobiographical works propose a musical mise en scène of the self. The composer becomes therefore one of the writer's models because he enables the 'I' to be read as a musical partition. At the same time, the structure of the visual spectacle is re-questioned by Rousseau whose writing marries the musical model. In the last instance it is the copyist who, in the autobiographical works, offers a writing model that of the chamber obscure, where the spectacle of the self is transformed into musical signs

Abstract:
In this study I investigated the process drama convention of tableau to mediate for the representation of main ideas in science information texts. My pedagogical goal was to focus on the body as a tool for engaging with information texts and my rationale for this goal was the belief that the body is neglected in classroom learning. The task of creating caused the students to be active and to think of their own and other bodies as signifiers of meaning. The methodology was based on a formative experiment that allowed for changes and modifications to be made in response to the intervention of tableau. Formative and design experiments recognize that classrooms are ecologically complex research sites that are situated in particular cultural and historical contexts. Theories related to cultural historical activity theory (CHAT), expansive and embodied learning frame this research as paradigms that recognize the dialectics between activity and culture and the body in and of the world. In the study tableau is framed as an innovative learning method that disrupts the traditional and historical methods for identifying main idea, such as the annotation of text. Through the disruption of tableau came opportunities to expand notions of literacy and comprehension as well as the traditional associations of drama with fiction texts. The study shows that tableau is a flexible mediating tool that can be applied to the current focus on informational texts and close reading.

Abstract:
This paper introduces a method to control the calculation progress of the RELAP5 codes and integrate them with other codes by interacting boundary data (such as general tables, TDVs and TDJs) at each step. This work is basically finished with the support of the RINSIM simulation platform. The paper gives a brief introduction on RINSIM that how it controls the codes progress, sends the codes control commands, shares the values of different codes’ common blocks or modules. However, the work can’t be done by just using the RINSIM, it also needs to modify RELAP5 codes. With the codes’ modification of commands responding, data reading/writing interface, data interacting interface, time step control and so on, we can build interface subroutines to integrate codes onto the RINSIM. At the end, the paper gives out the result of a transient calculation with an advanced PWR model. Compared to some old integration method, the new method has far more strong stability. And the result shows that the integration progress of the code does not obviously affect the calculation accuracy, but definitely extends the application fields because of the multiple functions supplied by the RINSIM.

Abstract:
Essential Tremor (ET) is a progressive neurological condition that affects over 10 million Americans. It causes a rhythmic trembling of the body that is most pronounced in the hands. Many ET patients lose the ability to perform simple yet vital tasks, such as writing. Current writing assisting devices are not able to efficiently cancel or restrict the trembling experienced by these patients when they write. We have developed a drafting arm that diminishes the arm and hand vibrations of ET patients by dampening the motion of the pen. Our design incorporates a two-segment arm with variable dampers at its joints. One end of the arm attaches to any table while the other holds a writing device. The two dampers resist the rotation at each joint. ET patients using this tool have shown significant improvement in their writing ability in comparison to using other consumer devices available today. As the final development stage, considerable effort is being put into engineering the device to be of practical use and to function well in the everyday lives of people.

Abstract:
It is not uncommon to find people with manual difficulties due to problems of motor coordination or some physical or neurological deficiency. This can hamper, among other things, the learning of writing digits and letters of the alphabet. In this article, we present a tool, developed in Python, to be used in tablets or phones with Android system. The tool can help users with some kind of hand handicap in the learning of letters or numbers writing, through their interaction with the electronic device. This system uses a CNN for recognizing the letters or digits and to give a feedback positive or negative for the user. Further, it can help users to learn about the corresponding image and sound, for each respective letter or digit. The mobile application is easy to use and has been tested in the learning of autistic children for 4 months. During training, the children demonstrated a good familiarity with the software and improved writing performance.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to minimize the likelihood of leakage from flanged piping joints, it is a good practice to maximize the initial bolt assembly stress. Present bolting guidelines (ASME PCC-1 [1]) outline the use of a percent of bolt yield across all flange sizes and classes to set the assembly stress level. These guidelines do indicate that aspects such as component strength and gasket stress should be considered, however the most common application of the approach is to use a standard percentage of bolt yield across all flange sizes and classes. This approach does allow for adjustment for differences in material yield strengths (carbon steel versus stainless steel) and raised face (RF) versus ring type joint (RTJ) flange configurations. It does not, however, adjust for the difference in strength between standard pipe flange sizes nor the actual gasket stress achieved across all flange sizes and classes. Since there is no assessment of flange strength, such an approach may cause failure of joint components. In addition, because the standard percentage of bolt yield technique does not look at gasket stress, it is prone to gasket leakage due to low stress or gasket destruction due to over-compression for some joints. In addition, some joints may require bolt loads well in excess of the standard value to develop an acceptable gasket stress level in order to prevent leakage. This paper is a continuation of the paper presented during PVP 2006 in Vancouver (Brown [2]), which examined the variables that must be considered and drew some preliminary conclusions regarding the use of flange stress limits in determining the maximum allowable bolt load for a given flange size. Subsequent to writing that paper, further investigation found that the code calculated flange stresses are a poor indicator of the maximum acceptable bolt load. The most practical measure of this load is obtained by using elastic-plastic finite element analysis (FEA) to determine the point of gross plastic deformation of the flange. This paper details the maximum bolt load limit results of elastic-plastic FEA on most sizes of standard ASME weld neck flange sizes. The practical application of this method is in the development of standard bolt assembly stress (or torque) tables for standard pipe flanges using a given gasket type. In addition, a new code equation and additional limits are developed, by comparison to the elastic-plastic FEA results, which allow the determination of the maximum assembly bolt load for non-standard weld-neck flanges and standard weld-neck flanges with different bores, materials or gaskets than used in the elastic-plastic FEA presented in this paper.

Abstract:
Abstract Mobile devices and laptops are the main ICT tools to exchange information among people in the world. All the applications are designed by following a specific interaction style based either touchscreen or mouse and keyboard, which can be performed only with detailed movements of hands and fingers. Traditional interaction becomes difficult for elderly who have diseases limiting the hand motor skills, such as arthritis and brain stroke. The use of simple air gestures can be adopted as alternative interaction style to interact with smartphones, tablets and laptops. The aim of this research work is the development of an application that allows text writing using air gestures for people with limited hand motor skills. The application embeds several computer vision algorithms and convolutional neural networks software modules to detect and drawn alphanumeric characters and recognizing them using both mobile devices and laptops. The preliminary results obtained show that the approach is robust, and it can easily detect the alphanumeric characters written with the movement of the wrist.

In ASME 2018 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2018-88267.

Abstract:
Microfabrication-free methods such as wax printing and hydrogel molding have been developed in recent years for fabricating microfluidic devices to enable the applications of microfluidic devices to a broader range. A process has been developed to fabricate electrospun fiber embedded microfluidic devices by integrating hydrogel molding (HGM) and electrospinning (ES), and the feasibility of this integrated method has been demonstrated through our initial study. In particular, agarose gels with various concentrations have been used to generate the channel molds inside PDMS. Recently, a 3D printer kit based on Fuse-deposition method (FDM) was modified to directly deposit hydrogel mold. The current study focuses on how to control the dispensing rate and the extruder motion of the 3D printer for this application. The paper presents a characterization process for determining optimal work ranges in terms of dispensing rate and the moving rate of the x-y table. Specifically, for a given hydrogel material and needle gauge, consistent dispensing volume rate was determined via varying the flow rate of syringe pump and analyzing recorded images. The ranges of the moving rate of the x-y table and the extrusion rate were then determined to generate the previous determined volume rate based on the experimental measurements. As the printer kit is controlled via open source software, the developed method will be applicable to characterization of depositing different material system.
