Abstract:
This study was written to see the effect of picture strategy inductive model (PWIM) and student self-efficacy to their skills in writing descriptive text. This research is a quasi-experimental design with factorial design. This research data is taken from the result of student writing skill test and self-efficacy questionnaire. Then, the data were analyzed by using t-test and two-way Anova through Minitab 14 application. The results of this study indicate that PWIM strategy has a significant effect on students' writing skill when compared with listing strategy used by teachers in writing teaching. The result shows a t count of 1,900 which is larger than the t-table that is worth 1.684. Then, students with high self-efficacy taught with the PWIM strategy have a better ability to write descriptive text than students taught with a listing strategy, where t counts are 3.160 which is greater than t-tables of 1.812. However, students with low self-efficacy taught by the PWIM strategy do not have a better ability to write descriptive text than students taught by a listing strategy that t-counts 1.730 smaller than t-tables of 1.812 . Furthermore, from the results of the study also found that there is no interaction between teaching strategies with self-efficacy to the writing skills of students where F-count is 0.08 higher than the F-table is 2.58.

Abstract:
In order to raise speed of reading data from disk array memory, scientific and technological personnel have introduced cache technology into disk array. Since this technique has been invented, although the efficiency of reading data have been solved, after writing operation of countless times in disk cache, data consistency problem has been prominent expression. Especially in this condition that false of electricity and machine abnormal failure, the consistency of the data is more difficult to guarantee. In this paper, we adopt Non-Volatile RAM (NVRAM) devices to realize that the data will not be lost in disk array cache after power failure. Here we design a kind of new cache organizational structure. We firstly introduce cache structure of two tables (real-time mapping table, backup mapping table) and a cache backup block. Then through these two tables, we can work to recover data through the copy between the two tables in the macroscopic, and in the microscopic through cache backup block can backup the cache data from writing failure. As power failure and system breakdown, we can ensure that data will not easily lose and the original data can recovery after system crash by this technology. Thus it ensures the consistency of the data cache.

Abstract:
This study places the recently excavated ninth-century A.D. four-part calendrical notations at Xultun (Lunar Table, Ring Number, Long Count, and Multiplication Table) in the context of both Classic monumental inscriptions and astronomical knowledge in the Postclassic Dresden Codex. We demonstrate that the Lunar Table employed a formula attributed to Palenque and that it could have been used as a device to determine precisely where to break the sequence of alternating 29- and 30-day months one finds on dated monuments. All four categories found at Xultun appear in the Dresden Codex. The Ring Number, which bridges a date in the deep past with one in the recently completed era, is a perfect fit with one of the most fundamental Dresden eclipse cycles. Our analysis of glyphs accompanying the Long Count date enables us to place candidate eclipses, especially one that corresponds with a conjunction of Mars, in real time. We argue that the large multiples were extracted from, or prepared for, warning tables like the Dresden eclipse table, and we demonstrate why such tables must have existed well before the Xultun inscriptions. Thus, while the writings in the Dresden manuscript constitute a finished product, the writing on the wall of residential Structure 10K-2 is more akin to what one might find in an astronomer's notebook.

Abstract:
This study was aimed at finding out whether the implementation of picture series strategy can improve the ability of the students in writing narrative text. The research design was collaborative action research which consisted of two cycles, in where cycle 1 consisted of three meetings and cycle 2 consisted of four meetings. A cycle consisted of four steps namely: planning the action, acting on the plan, observing the action and reflecting on the observation. The subject of the study was the 34 students. The instruments used to collect data were observation checklist, field notes, questionnaires, scoring rubrics and the students’ writings. The data from the observation, scoring rubrics and questionnaires were analyzed and the results are presented in the form of tables and description, while the data gained from the field notes and the students’ writings were analyzed and reported descriptively. The result of the study showed that the picture series effectively improved the students’ ability in writing narrative texts. All students had reached the minimum score of 3. Moreover, the majority of the students gave positive responses towards the implementation of picture series, in the case that 70% of the students showed excitement. Furthermore, they found that picture series is interesting, easy to understand, moreover, it helped them to organize paragraphs and develop ideas in writing narrative texts. Abstract:
Abstract In current debates the media, policy makers and scientists are aiming to identify factors explaining negative trends in the orthography competencies of German primary school students. Especially a concept making use of initial sound tables and the method “reading by writing“ is often identified as a core factor. However empirical studies backing these claims are rare and contradictory. Also very little is known about the actual use of initial sound tables in primary schools. In this article we provide an overview of empirical studies on the effectiveness of the use of initial sound tables and the concept “reading by writing“. We then present data from a short teacher survey on the use of initial sound tables in German classes, which was realized as an extension to the PIRLS 2016 and is therefore representative for German primary schools. According to this survey about 70 % of all Grade 4 learners of 2016 have been exposed to initial sound tables as part of their German lessons throughout primary school. About half of these learners were asked to work almost every lesson with these tables in their first one-half years of schooling. We also find that teachers who work with sound tables differ in their beliefs about when student’s spelling mistakes should be corrected. In addition we find that the majority of teachers report to combine the use of sound tables with other materials, such as basic readers. We argue especially this finding should guide future designs of studies aiming to compare the effectiveness of different methods as most of the current studies possibly wrongly assume a distinctive or at least dominant use of initial sound tables or basic readers.

If you’d walked by Professor Susan Detwiler’s Writing and Critical Inquiry (WCI) classrooms at the University at Albany-SUNY on September 7, you would have seen something rather unusual: two teams of students huddled around tables, preoccupied with locked boxes and an assortment of other materials. Engaged in animated, yet hushed, conversations to keep the other team from overhearing, the students puzzled over cryptic messages and secret codes, hoping to unlock the box and reveal what was inside. Some of the materials on the table provided clues, others turned out to be red herrings.

Abstract This article and accompanying table provide an overview and catalogue of a large number of experimental translation methods that have been used by avantgarde poets. Poetic/experimental translation as defined and explored herein is a form of translation in which the aesthetic and execution of the translator is as important as that of the perceived intention of the original writer. The article’s seven-section table gives a definition of each method, and gives examples and expositions of a range of particular poets' work. The table of translation methods recognizes and explores the fact that of all forms of writing, poetry concerns itself with the ‘how it is said’ more than any other. The table outlines many different methods of translation, looking at how meaning, rhyme, sound, form, constraint, or style can be translated by the experimental writer when translating one or more source texts. These individual, intellectual, and aesthetic choices made by a wide range of poets are collated and detailed in seven discrete-yet-overlapping areas.

Abstract:
Computer-assisted collaborative writing has been gradually employed in L2 and FL contexts due to the introduction of Web 2.0 applications and tools (i.e., Google Docs and wikis) and its benefits in developing learners’ writing skills. Accordingly, extensive literature that dealt with computer-assisted collaborative learning and learners’ perceptions towards this activity has been condensed on shelves by time passing. Thus, a review of former studies over the recent decade is called forth aiming to ameliorate the difficulties of reaching this literature and to awaken broadened knowledge in this promising area. This paper reviewed and discussed about 40 relevant articles published from 2011 to 2019 that dealt with computer-assisted collaborative writing using Web 2.0 tools, precisely Google Docs and wikis, and learners’ perceptions towards this activity (computer-assisted collaborative writing) and tools. All the articles were selected according to specific criteria, where only a true collaborative writing peer-reviewed articles were selected. After that, two main themes were synthesized: (a) collaborative writing outcomes and (b) students’ perceptions, and specific research components in relation to each theme were further reviewed and summarized using illustrative tables. Drawing on the review of this literature, the researchers discuss pedagogical implications in terms of technology integration and writing development and address future research directions including systematically reviewing this topic with teachers’ perceptions of computer-assisted collaborative writing.

Abstract:
Web-based document editing is a system for making scientific papers without having to adjust the format of writing scientific papers. Where in this system has provided a framework for entering journal contents. Journal article creation must follow the format already in place in the organization, such as font size, edge size, and so on. Often in writing journals, writers experience difficulties or constraints in the format of writing, so they often experience errors in writing journal articles. For this reason, it is necessary to have a standard web journal writing program, which provides a framework for the format of journal writing. The process carried out in designing this application is by looking at the guidelines for journal manuscript writing, with these guidelines the writer can know how the journal format will be translated into a program script. The purpose of this research is to design a standard web program for editing documents in journals and to assist journal authors / journal authors in making scientific papers online. In this research, the writer made a document editing system for scientific journal writing format using PHP and MySQL in the application system. Where in the system designed the author only includes the entries of each input in the journal framework. In this system all the input that is filled in is stored in a database with different tables. And when the author sees the contents of the journal, the display on the journal contents automatically matches the journal template.

Abstract:
This article contains results from a literary analysis of fifty scientific papers selected from the top 100 most-cited papers appearing in the Science Citation Index for the period 1945–1988. Most papers are from the field of biochemistry and became citation superstars because their authors discovered a method or material that numerous others could use in their own research. The typical paper has two authors, two tables, six figures, and twenty-two references. It adheres to the conventional topical organization, with the topics distributed as follows: 2 percent abstract, 5 percent introduction, 25 percent methods and materials, 50 percent results, 10 percent discussion, 4 percent conclusion, and 4 percent reference list. Tables and figures occupy about 30 percent of the article. With respect to the writing style, the average sentence is somewhat long (24 words) but not unreasonably so, and the sentence structure is simple greater than half the time. Moreover, sentences tend to rely heavily on to be verbs (about 80% of sentences have at least one) and abstract nouns (0.66 per sentence). Explanations for the typical form and writing style in these papers are provided.

Abstract--This paper has focused on technical writing as a skill for engineers. It has sought to define technical writing and throw light on the content and technique of writing the various components of successful technical reports (for example, articles, papers, or research reports, such as theses and dissertations). Then, it has highlighted other special features and principles of effective technical writing. The material in this paper is divided into seven major parts. Part 1 (Technical writing for engineers) stresses that a successful engineering career requires strong writing skills. Part 2 (How to write the major sections or elements of a report) describes the techniques of writing the abstract, introduction, literature review, procedure/methods & materials, results, discussion, conclusion, and recommendations. Part 3 (Special features of technical writing) brings into focus some of the special features of technical writing such as tables & graphs in the text, graphics in instructions, team writing, ethics (plagiarism), document sources, three citation styles and IEEE reference style. Part 4 (Technical usage) deals with writing abbreviations, initialisms and acronyms, numbers, units of measurement, and equations.Part 5 (Technical style) highlights the imperative writing style and other features of technical writing such as the use of active and passive voices, plain vs. complex syntax, avoiding redundant or superfluous expressions, and vague generalities, using words or expressions with visual impact, the past tense to describe experimental work, the present tense to describe hypotheses, principles, theories and truths, and breaking up the text of the report into short sections. Part 6 (Document specifications) emphasizes the technical writer’s need to conform to such document specifications as word count, format, font, number of words per line of text imposed. Part 7 (Reader-friendly technical writing) suggests choosing the varied writing modes (patterns of organization of information) to suit the technical writing task, checking for technical accuracy and following three levels of editing to help increase the readability of a technical text. Finally, in part 8 (Ethical/legal considerations for the technical writer), the authors suggest ways for the technical writer to overcome ethical/legal dilemmas on the job.

This research discusses the effects of portfolio assessment on students’ improvement in English writing which are related to their writing proficiency levels, the problems encountered by them in each writing proficiency level, and the solution can be implemented regarding the problems found in the research. The research’s subject was Grade VIII which consisted of two classes. The method applied was qualitative method by using test, documentation, and observation instruments to gather the data. All the scores of the tests are arranged in tables based on Wang and Liao’s criteria (2008) and are presented in bar chart. The results show that every level of writing proficiency has different percentage of improvement, and the low level students have the least improvement; they produced less sentences. The research also found that every level of writing proficiency had problems which were mainly in content, organization, conventions, and vocabulary, while the low level proficiency had another problem in gaining confidence to produce sentences. Beside that, the students did better in using present tense than past tense, and to improve their writing, it was proven that detailed correction and feedback were effective for the improvement. Thus, it is suggested that teacher should give different portion of attention related to correction and feedback, and the most portion should be given to the low level students of writing proficiency as they have the least improvement. Teacher should also give detailed correction and feedback as well to students to make better improvement. The research suggests that portfolio assessment program can be carried out integratedly in English lesson in every semester for all grades of Junior High School since it was proven good for students’ writing improvement.

Abstract:
A group facilitation technique called World Café usually involves dividing a large number of people into smaller groups at tables, exploring a variety of topics around a key focus, and collecting ideas from the discussions to debrief later as a large group. We used a modified version of World Café during the new Cracker Barrel session format at the 2012 STLHE conference. Inviting conference participants to explore science through writing, we met our goal of interactivity and collected ideas from 33 people in spite of the challenges of time (a 15-minute session repeated three times for different groups) and space (11 participants around one table each time). The success of involving conference participants actively in this new conference format shows its value as a conference technique and also led us to consider its utility in the classroom or other settings.

Abstract:
This research attempts to develop a supplementary writing teaching method that is compatible with the Unlock intermediate level students at Birzeit University. The purpose of the study is to also provide writing instruction regarding four general writing needs and for such students: understanding genre, using clause and sentence structure for chosen text types, developing a sense of audience, and writing coherently. The study is based on the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), and the writing instruction is provided through two teaching methodologies, Joint Construction and the Logical Tree. The sample of this study is 54 intermediate-level students of the Unlock program, 27 of whom comprised the control group, the remaining 27, the experimental group. Frequency tables were utilized to calculate the sum of the cohesive and structural devices used. Overall, the results revealed more use of the measured variables in the experimental group than in the control. In the experimental group, devices of nominalization, contrast, addition, reason, register, and voice were used 115, 34, 27, 49, 92, and 27 times, respectively. However, in the control group, the same devices were used 58, 19, 11, 19, 35, and 12 times, respectively. The researcher recommends further research be conducted on larger samples of different levels of English proficiency in order to identify additional needs and provide a more representative assessment.

Abstract:
Parker's Common Law, History, and Democracy in America joins an ongoing effort to turn the tables on “law and …” by replacing the familiar question “What can history, sociology, and cultural studies tell us about law?” with a new line of inquiry asking “What can law teach us about the reach and limits of disciplinary thinking?” In his study of the reception of common law into nineteenth‐century American jurisprudence, Parker unearths a notion of time based on stability and repetition that challenges the dominant modernist and historicist approach to the writing of law and history. Parker, however, shies away from drawing the full implications of this move and it remains unclear whether, in the final analysis, he escapes the spell of legal historicism.

Abstract:
In the recently published article by Katrusiak (2001) the crystal data of two polymorphs of maleic hydrazide have been printed with errors or omissions in Tables 1 and 2. It was the author's intention that the measurements of the unit-cell dimensions were possibly accurate, as the comparison of densities and unit-cell volumes of polymorphs are of particular importance. Therefore, these measurements were carried out at varied temperatures to eliminate possible differences owing to the thermal expansion of the crystals, and two different diffractometers, one with a point detector and another one with a CCD, were used to eliminate systematic errors. From these data the unit-cell dimensions at normal conditions were estimated and listed in Table 1, while the crystal data of the diffractometric experiments were duly related in Table 2. It was hoped that this procedure would provide the reader with reliable crystal data. Overestimated precision of routinely reported unit-cell dimensions has been extensively discussed by other authors (e.g. see Herbstein, 2000). The ambiguity resulting from different equipment, data collecting techniques, wavelengths etc. is further aggravated by the vague definition of the so-called room temperature. This temperature is assumed as 293 K and indeed this is the default value if not specified otherwise in programs writing CIF files, even though diffractometers are usually enclosed in safety boxes, where slowly circulating air is heated up by step motors, electronics, cables etc. or even by the X-ray tube if its heat is not totally balanced by the cooling system. Therefore, the temperature in the safety box is higher than outside: when the temperature in our laboratory is air-conditioned to 293 K, the difference in temperatures outside and inside the safety box is 3.5°. Additionally, the temperature of the measurement, even when measured with high relative precision, may considerably differ from the absolute scale. Meanwhile, the crystal data in Tables 1 and 2 were treated as redundant and after acceptance of the manuscript the crystal data were removed from Table 2 in the proof. The author's request to include these missing data resulted in the multiple errors (Katrusiak, 2001). The correct tables, as originally submitted, are reproduced below.

Abstract:
This article claims that two social values in science—falsifiability of science and cooperation among scientists—determine use of passives in scientific communication. Scientists do not always develop valid theories, so scientific experiments must be amenable to being repeated and found invalid. This requires that the experiments must not be discrete events. Science is also a cooperative enterprise. As an integral part of science, scientific writing employs more passives than actives to focus on materials, methods, figures, processes, tables, concepts, etc. Use of passives to focus on the physical world helps de-emphasize discreteness of scientific experiments. Besides, it also helps remove personal qualifications of observing experimental results. Finally, it enhances cooperation among working scientists by providing a common knowledge base of scientific work—things and objects. Looked at in this way, the passive voice in scientific writing represents professional practices of science instead of personal stylistic choices of individual scientists.

Abstract:
The study examined the implementation of board games through the students’ achievement in writing skill through descriptive text at SMPN 18 Surabaya. It used the pre-test post-test design in classroom action research model for the students in class VIII-G as subjects selected from sampled classes. T-test was used as the statistical technique for the data analysis. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed the data in the tables t-Test: Paired Two Sample for Means (VIII-G) reveal that the obtained t-value was -10.83171521 which were well above the limit of 0.05 of significance. The post-test had a higher mean of 80.39473684. While the pre-test had a mean of 69.36842105. Because p-value (4.97263E-13) was less than the standard significance level of 0.05, researchers can reject the null hypothesis (Ho). Thus, the second hypothesis (Ha) was accepted regarding there is significant effect of the implementation of board games through the students’ achievement in writing skill through descriptive text. It is hereby recommended that English teachers should adapt this model to enhance students’ achievement in other English skills. For students, it is suggested they have to be more paying attention to the model of teaching being applied such as the implementation of board games through the students’ achievement in writing skill through descriptive text so they can be able to explore their skill of writing as well. Other researches, however, should explore to investigate the effect of other games on specific writing genres.

Abstract:
Information on handedness, assessed as writing-hand, was collected from 197 MZ twin pairs and 203 DZ twin pairs and from their parents, spouses, and children. Associations for pairs of relatives were studied by 2 × 2 tables, computing chi squared-values and tetrachoric correlations. Correlations of about .3 were obtained for mother-offspring and sibling pairs, while for cousins the correlation was .25 (in a small sample). No other significant associations were found, not even for twins. These results suggest only a small, if any, genetic effect, and only a small environmental between family effect, most of which seems to be a maternal effect. The lack of cotwin correlations and correlations for one of the twins with her/his ordinary brothers/sisters suggest the existence of an effect specific to twins, since the correlation for pairs of ordinary siblings is significant. Conclusions drawn from twin studies alone may be biased. The frequency of left-hand writers has increased from 1% to 10% in the different age groups born during the last century in Norway This age effect is present mainly in hand writing and not so much in handedness generally, suggesting a decrease in cultural repression against left-hand writing.

Abstract:
Introduction. The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in education provides promising opportunities for individual learning. However, one can question the efficiency of using electronic resources for certain students, e.g. hearing-impaired students, if their special cognitive characteristics were not considered while designing these resources. The aim of the research presented in the publication is to develop a scientific basis and the methodology for the effective teaching of basic disciplines using various sources of information. Methodology and research methods. The presented research results were obtained using standard and adapted methods (‘10 words’ adapted technique, Schulte tables, standardized methods for studying reading skills), questionnaires, analysis of written works based on the developed criteria. A series of experiments involved students majoring in Engineering at Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University: 98 students participated in experiments with the adapted "10 words" method and Schulte tables (19 of them were hearing impaired); for the analysis of writing skills, the works of 116 students were collected (27 of them-with hearing impairment); 12 students with hearing impairment took part in experiments on reading skills. Results. For short-term memory, the results turned out to be better when demonstrating words from the electronic board than from printed sources (students with health standard: electronic board – 7.24 words; printed source – 6.39; for deaf and hard of hearing students: 6.2 and 5.8 words respectively). Based on the results of the attentiveness test (adapted Schulte tables), this indicator is better when working with tables in paper form (Student's t-test: tcr=1.97 (p≤0.05), tcr=2.61(p≤0.01), temp = 2.3). For reading skills, research has shown that students did a better job with keyword and abstracting when working with printed text (tcr=2.07 (p≤0.05), tcr=2.82(p≤0.01), temp= 2.4). As for the monitoring of writing skills, for hearing impaired students, the main monitoring criterion is emotionality (expressiveness); some features of visual perception of the sentences arrangement are also noted. Scientific novelty. The analysis of the results of these experiments will allow us to clarify the features of comparing the cognitive skills dealing with the information perception from different media when teaching people with hearing impairment. Practical significance. The results obtained allowed us to conclude that in the learning process it is recommended to combine sources of information on different media.

Abstract:
We examined the technical adequacy of writing progress measures as indicators of success on state standards tests. Tenth-grade students wrote for 10 min, marking their samples at 3, 5, and 7 min. Samples were scored for words written, words spelled correctly, and correct and correct minus incorrect word sequences. The number of correct minus incorrect word sequences written in 7 and 10 min yielded the highest reliability and validity coefficients. Tables of Probable Success were created to illustrate the relation between scores on the progress measures and the state tests. Exploratory analyses of differences in correlations between English Language Learners (ELL) and non-ELL students revealed a similar pattern of results for the 2 groups, but correlations were stronger for ELL students than for non-ELL students.

Abstract:
Research Highlights Although writing is an important skill, it is not easy to be acquired (Fareed et al., 2016; Raimes, 1983; Sa ’diyah, 2017). Therefore, if pupils were proficient in grammatical rules, they should be able to write better. This quantitative study aims to identify grammatical errors based on a short guided essay written by 77 Year 6 primary pupils from a suburban school in one of the states of Malaysia. The focus is on four word classes: noun, verb, preposition and article which have a higher frequency of errors. Findings showed these pupils made the most errors in the usage of verbs. This study suggests teachers to plan an intervention to help improve their pupils’ learning of the language based on a deep understanding of the problem areas. Research Objectives Teachers can come up with practical and effective interventions to help their pupils learn the English language after reflecting on their teaching methods (Ho Peng, 1976). Error analysis is a useful way because it provides teachers with essential information on the types of errors committed by their pupils when they write, and teachers can use this information to select suitable teaching techniques to make pupils’ learning more effective (Talif and Edwin, 2015). This study focuses on the types of errors made by Year 6 ESL pupils who will be sitting for the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) this year. This study aims to identify the types of errors that these pupils frequently make when they attempted to write a short essay in English. Teachers can plan for interventions to overcome these errors and to improve their pupils’ writing skill when they know the areas of weaknesses of their pupils. Methodology This study is a quantitative study and subjects are based on purposive sampling. They are 77 Year 6 pupils from one of the suburban schools in one of the states in Malaysia. They are grouped according to two groups: advanced and lower-intermediate. By doing this, the differences in the frequency of errors made by these two groups can be clearly seen. These two groups were asked to complete a writing task which was a guided essay during their English language class within the limit of one hour. The writing task was similar to the essay question in Section C of the UPSR English Language paper. The essay should be between 80 to 100 words. The essays will then be marked and analysed by the researcher. The findings are presented using three tables followed by a discussion of data. The researcher only focused on four word class: noun, verb, preposition and article. Examples of errors taken from the pupils’ essays are provided and discussed in the discussion of findings section. Results Results showed that both Group 1 and Group 2 has an equal number of frequency of errors of thirty in the usage of nouns in their essays. Most of the pupils made errors in plurality and pronouns. As for errors in the usage of verbs, Group 1 has a total of thirty-seven pupils compared to Group 2 which has only thirty-six pupils. Most of the pupils made errors when using tenses to write. They also made errors when using auxiliary verbs and modal verbs. Some pupils misused participle tense. In the usage of prepositions, Group 2 tends to make more errors compared to Group 1. Group 2 has nine compared to Group 1 which has only three pupils. It could be due to Group 2 pupils tend to write longer sentences. In the usage of articles, Group 1 unexpectedly made fewer errors compared to Group 2. Group 1 only have six pupils meanwhile Group 2 has thirteen pupils. Some of the pupils use the wrong article and some of them did not add an article before the nouns. Findings Findings show that the percentage of errors made by the pupils in the four word class is 79 per cent and 77 per cent for nouns, 97.4 per cent and 92.3 per cent for verbs, 23.7 per cent and 7.7 per cent for prepositions, and 15.8 per cent and 33.3 per cent for articles. From the findings, it is obvious that verbs is a problem for these pupils especially in the use of tenses. It shows that pupils’ knowledge in the use of tenses needs to be reinforced. Teachers should plan an intervention to overcome this problem.

Abstract:
A survey of 138 introductory-astronomy textbooks spanning 152 years reveals growing consensus regarding each topic’s proportion, with some clearly gaining space at the expense of others. The tables in the texts cite curious numbers, claim too many significant digits, neglect to note uncertainties, and are frequently inconsistent with, or badly behind, the research of the times. This study investigates apportionment of topics, planet and star data tables, and categorization of nebulae. To probe the student/textbook interaction, I used one copy of each of 40 recent introductory textbooks when teaching astronomy in Fall 1986. Students swapped books each session. Texts’ treatments were surveyed in daily recitation as well as term papers comparing and contrasting them on specific topics. Most books sound much more positive than current data justify. There was lots of confusing phrasing, shoddy proofreading, and careless assembly of data tables. A few books are shamefully erroneous. There are numerous impressive examples of the imperfection and transience of “textbook learning.” The biggest and most pervasive sin was writing in the passive voice “Official Style” of interminable sentences laden with prepositional phrases. Illustrations, while important, are secondary to phrasing. Students need and use chapter summaries, glossaries, and indices. About half prefer paperbacks and half hardbacks. Students rated the books for appropriateness to their needs. The experience may stimulate others to develop controlled experiments to probe the student/textbook interaction.

The recommendations of liming and fertilization for the different crops in the main producing regions of the country are based on the knowledge generated by researchers in the area of soil science. Interpretation tables for nutrient contents in the soil and tables with the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were elaborated for the different manuals published in some states / regions. Under the name of AGROFERT, a WEB system was created that aims to integrate the information of the correction and fertilizer recommendation systems for the states of Rio Grande do Sul / Santa Catarina and Paraná for the main grain crops and to evaluate the evolution of the characteristics of the soil. The system has a consistent scientific basis, allowing for more comprehensive recommendations that can be continually improved. To date, different existing computerized recommendation systems are specific to a single state / region and provide simpler information. The Agrofert system saves time, since its use does not require calculating, correcting and writing recommendations by the traditional method (Manual)

Abstract:
This paper explores the English language learners’ weakness in writing because most of them do not know how to combine their sentences correctly. The paper was devoted to Sentence Combining (SC) as an essential technique or method that affects EFL learners' performance in writing English. Using the case study on fourth-level students majoring in English, the descriptive-analytical method has been applied, representing the three eastern universities in Sudan: The University of Kassala, University of Gadarif and Red Sea University. The researcher used an objective test of (83) items in Sentence Combining in English. The frequency tables and percentage were used for the five areas in the students' test (pass-fail). According to the students' outcomes, they have been proved that the Sudanese learners of English at the three eastern universities lack the awareness of methods and techniques of combining English sentences. They are not well-informed of combining English sentences by means of punctuation, co-ordination, subordination, reduction and apposition. The concept of sentence combining is unconsciously neglected by the teachers themselves, who are unaware of its importance.

Abstracttitle SUMMARY /title The author has transcribed the most important manuscripts containing the laboratory notebooks of biological interest of L. Spallanzani. Here we show their importance, content and structure by means of a series of tables which give the location, dates of writing and subject matter of the individual manuscripts (which are kept at the A. Panizzi library in Reggio Emilia). An edition of these manuscripts has been transferred to floppy disc and entrusted to the Florence History of Science Museum. In this article we present the criteria which were followed in the preparation of this edition which can be consulted, after complying with the necessary formalities, at the library itself.

Abstract:
Objective:To provide Canadian physicians and allied health care professionals with the evidence they need to help them make treatment decisions in the management of patients with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias.Options:The full range and quality of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities available to Canadian physicians for the management of dementia.Outcomes:Improvement in the treatment of dementias, leading to reduced suffering, increased functional capacity and decreased economic burden.Evidence and values:The creation of these evidence-based consensus statements involved literature reviews of the subject by the authors; comparison of alternative clinical pathways and description of the methods whereby published data were analyzed; definition of the level of evidence for data in each case; evaluation and revision in a conference setting (involving primary care physicians, neurologists, psychiatrists, geriatricians, psychologists, consumers and other interested parties); insertion of tables showing key variables and data from various studies and tables of data with recommendations; and reassessment by all authors.Benefits, harms, and costs:A rational plan for the therapy of dementias is likely to lead to substantial benefits in both human and economic terms.Recommendations:Treatment decisions should be made taking into account the severity or stage of the disease, the availability of caregivers, the presence of disease affecting other bodily systems and the ability of the subject to pay the cost of the medications. Donepezil is considered to have positive effects upon certain tests of neuropsychological function and may produce some improvement in Alzheimer’s disease of mild to moderate severity as measured by rating scales. Its ability to improve quality of life remains uncertain. No other drug treatments* (apart from symptomatic therapies) are at present approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.Validation:These recommendations were created by a writing committee, evaluated and revised at a consensus conference and further reviewed and revised by the writing committee prior to publication.

Abstract:
AbstractAn extension of Boley’s continuum mechanics-based successive approximation method is presented for rectangular beams composed of two isotropic linear elastic layers. The solution is cast into the form of tables, in complete analogy to the tables originally presented by Boley and Tolins for single-layer strips. The first column in these tables corresponds to the classical Bernoulli–Euler theory of beams. The further columns represent comparatively fast converging correction terms of an increasing refinement. Our two-layer formulation automatically satisfies the stress continuity conditions at the interface of the two layers. Enforcing displacement continuity at the interface between the layers, we derive results that do satisfy the equilibrium field equations, the stress continuity conditions at the interface and the stress boundary conditions at the upper and lower edges. When converged, the field constitutive relations and the displacement continuity at the interface between the two layers are also satisfied. We present a compact formulation, which allows writing down the results for more than the three successive steps considered by Boley and Tolins. The elasticity solutions presented subsequently can be used as novel analytic benchmarks for comparison with refined structural mechanics beam theories. Interior solutions for beams with a finite axial extent can be obtained by assigning approximate boundary conditions at the lateral ends. Comparisons to finite element computations for a clamped–clamped beam give strong evidence for the correctness of our analytic results.
