Abstract:
Recognition of Indian language scripts is a challenging problem. Work for the development of complete OCR systems for Indian language scripts is still in infancy. Complete OCR systems have recently been developed for Devanagri and Bangla scripts. Research in the field of recognition of Telugu script faces major problems mainly related to the touching and overlapping of characters. Segmentation of touching Telugu characters is a difficult task for recognizing individual characters. In this paper, the proposed algorithm is for the segmentation of touching Hand written Telugu characters. The proposed method using Drop-fall algorithm is based on the moving of a marble on either side of the touching characters for selection of the point from where the cutting of the fused components should take place. This method improvers the segmentation accuracy higher than the existing one.

Abstract:
Abstract The hagiography of the bhakti poet is often times far more elaborate than their compositions and can even determine the interpretation of their poetic productions (Pechilis 2011). The hagiography can exceed the spaces of written or orally composed poetry to shape the visual imagery of the bhakti poet-saint. This article examines two such instances of constructed hagiography and visual imagery in Telugu-speaking southern India, namely those of Siddhendra and Kṣetrayya. Situated within a few kilometres of each other in what is now known as the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, Siddhendra and Kṣetrayya are imagined as paradigmatic bhakti poet-saints whose compositions are integral to Telugu arts and performance. The similarity in hagiography and visual imagery across these two figures is a direct byproduct of twentieth-century Telugu proponents who made concerted efforts to position Telugu arts within a pan-Indian modernist framework of bhakti. Telugu scholars and performers invoke bhakti discourses and imagery to frame both Siddhendra and Kṣetrayya as Telugu bhakti poet-saints. In doing so, Telugu proponents imbue their arts with religious weight, while also positing the Brahmin-dominated areas of the Krishna district as the heart of Telugu performance culture.

Abstract:
The aim of the present work is to recognize printed and handwritten Telugu characters using artificial neural networks (ANNs). Earlier work on recognition of Telugu characters has been done using conventional pattern recognition techniques. We make an initial attempt here of using neural networks for recognition with the aim of improving upon earlier methods which do not perform effectively in the presence of noise and distortion in the characters. The Hopfield model of neural network working as an associative memory is chosen for recognition purposes initially. Due to limitation in the capacity of the Hopfield neural network, we propose a new scheme named here as the Multiple Neural Network Associative Memory (MNNAM). The limitation in storage capacity has been overcome by combining multiple neural networks which work in parallel. It is also demonstrated that the Hopfield network is suitable for recognizing noisy printed characters as well as handwritten characters written by different “hands” in a variety of styles. Detailed experiments have been carried out using several learning strategies and results are reported. It is shown here that satisfactory recognition is possible using the proposed strategy. A detailed preprocessing scheme of the Telugu characters from digitized documents is also described.

Abstract:
Due to the enormous application, handwritten digit recognition (HDR) has become an extremely important domain in optical character recognition (OCR)-related research. The predominant challenges faced in this domain include different photometric inconsistencies together with computational complexity. In this paper, the authors proposed a language invariant shape-based feature descriptor using the refraction property of light rays. It is to be noted that the proposed approach is novel as an adaptation of refraction property is completely new in this domain. The proposed method is assessed using five datasets of five different languages. Among the five datasets, four are offline (written Devanagari, Bangla, Arabic, and Telugu) and one is online (written in Assamese) handwritten digit datasets. The approach provides admirable outcomes for online digits whereas; it yields satisfactory results for offline handwritten digits. The method gives good result for both online and offline handwritten digits, which proves its robustness. It is also computationally less expensive compared to other state-of-the-art methods including deep learning-based models.

Abstract:
In recent years, the sociolinguistic theory of code-switching and code-mixing has been a source of great interest among scholars worldwide. The phenomenon is common in such multilingual societies as India. Most known cases of code-switching are, however, restricted to the spoken form, in which English is liberally interspersed with such regional languages as Hindi, Marathi, and Telugu. What has not yet significantly caught the attention of scholars is the notion of such switching and mixing in print. This practice is however particularly prevalent among writers in popular magazines, who resort to written code-switching for a variety of reasons. The present paper endeavours to examine the causes of the popularity of this style of writing in the light of some accepted theories of multilingualism.

Abstract:
<span id="docs-internal-guid-5b69f940-7fff-f443-1f09-a00e5e983714"><span>In cross-language information retrieval (CLIR), the neural machine translation (NMT) plays a vital role. CLIR retrieves the information written in a language which is different from the user's query language. In CLIR, the main concern is to translate the user query from the source language to the target language. NMT is useful for translating the data from one language to another. NMT has better accuracy for different languages like English to German and so-on. In this paper, NMT has applied for translating English to Indian languages, especially for Telugu. Besides NMT, an effort is also made to improve accuracy by applying effective preprocessing mechanism. The role of effective preprocessing in improving accuracy will be less but countable. Machine translation (MT) is a data-driven approach where parallel corpus will act as input in MT. NMT requires a massive amount of parallel corpus for performing the translation. Building an English - Telugu parallel corpus is costly because they are resource-poor languages. Different mechanisms are available for preparing the parallel corpus. The major issue in preparing parallel corpus is data replication that is handled during preprocessing. The other issue in machine translation is the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem. Earlier dictionaries are used to handle OOV problems. To overcome this problem the rare words are segmented into sequences of subwords during preprocessing. The parameters like accuracy, perplexity, cross-entropy and BLEU scores shows better translation quality for NMT with effective preprocessing.</span></span>

Abstract:
Secure authentication is a vital component for device security. The most basic form of authentication is by using passwords. With the evolution of smart devices, selecting stronger and unbreakable passwords have become a challenging task. Such passwords if written in native languages tend to offer improved security since attackers having no knowledge of such scripts finding it hard to crack. This article proposes two zone-wise feature extraction approaches - zone-wise structural and directional (ZSD) and zone-wise slopes of dominant points (ZSDP), to recognize online handwritten script and word in four major Indic scripts - Devanagari, Bengali, Telugu and Tamil. These features have been used separately and in combination in HMM-based platform for recognition purpose. The dimension reduction of the ZSD-ZSDP combination with factor analysis has shown the best performance in all the four scripts. This work can be utilized for setting up the authentication schemes with the Indic scripts' passwords thus rendering it difficult to crack by hackers having no knowledge of such scripts.

Abstract:
AbstractThis essays deals with a neglected and significant strand of Indian political thought by describing and analysing the corpus known as nīti in the context of medieval and early modern South India (in particular with reference to the Telugu-speaking region). Works of nīti are presented here within a larger context, as they evolve from the medieval Andhra of the Kakatiyas into the Vijayanagara period, the Nayakas, and beyond. They are also opposed and contrasted to other texts written within the broad category of dharmashāstra, which seem to deal with a far more conservative project for the management of society and politics within a caste-based framework. Authors and compilers dealt with include Baddena and Madiki Singana, but also the celebrated emperor-poet Krishnadevaraya (r. 1509–29). An argument is made for the continued relevance of these texts for the conduct of politics in South Asia, into and beyond the colonial period.

Abstract:
The most productive strategy to improve students' ability to write is to have direct and as much as possible teacher input. However, the workload of the teacher is greatly increased. Automated systems are increasingly required to help students write essays. In the field of educational assessment technology, automated test evaluation is becoming more and more common. We present a framework that is modelled on the programme, following which the school-teachers in the BPDAV School and Govt. High School Hyderabad, Telangana, India present the automatic evaluator of student essays in the Telugu language. Language skills; the structure of the essay and the contents that fit the subject are the principal requirements for evaluating the essays. In this context, we have established a scheme focused on latent semantical analysis and the theory of rhetorical structure. The method has been evaluated in more than 600 different essays, written in different manuscripts by schoolchildren. Overall 0.82 with the teacher's assessment was achieved in our method.

Abstract:
Script identification is an appealing research interest in the field of document image analysis during the last few decades. The accurate recognition of the script is paramount to many post-processing steps such as automated document sorting, machine translation and searching of text written in a particular script in multilingual environment. For automatic processing of such documents through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, it is necessary to identify different script words of the documents before feeding them to the OCR of individual scripts. In this paper, a robust word-level handwritten script identification technique has been proposed using texture based features to identify the words written in any of the seven popular scripts namely, Bangla, Devanagari, Gurumukhi, Malayalam, Oriya, Telugu, and Roman. The texture based features comprise of a combination of Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and Moment invariants. The technique has been tested on 7000 handwritten text words in which each script contributes 1000 words. Based on the identification accuracies and statistical significance testing of seven well-known classifiers, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) has been chosen as the final classifier which is then tested comprehensively using different folds and with different epoch sizes. The overall accuracy of the system is found to be 94.7% using 5-fold cross validation scheme, which is quite impressive considering the complexities and shape variations of the said scripts. This is an extended version of the paper described in (Singh et al., 2014).

Abstract:
Sarcasm is usually used by people to either tease/irritate others or simply for comic purposes. The presence of sarcasm becomes certain as it is difficult to be identified by basic sentiment analysis method. Sarcasm detection is addressed with various rule-based methods, statistical approaches, and classifiers in machine learning , most of these are introduced to identify sarcasm in text written in English as it is a popular language on the internet. Although the groundwork done on sarcasm detection on various Indian languages like Telugu is limited. Hence, this paper presents a Deep learning model based on neural networks to detect sarcasm in Telugu news headlines taken from various websites . The proposed model comprises of Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN) and next a Long short-term memory(LSTM) Network which is a modified version of Recurrent neural networks (RNN) and lastly a fully connected dense layer is added to classify the sentiments into sarcastic and non-sarcastic. A pre-trained word embeddings GloVe are used in the model

Abstract:
The need for offline handwritten character recognition is intense, yet difficult as the writing varies from person to person and also depends on various other factors connected to the attitude and mood of the person. However, we are able to achieve it by converting the handwritten document into digital form. It has been advanced with introducing convolutional neural networks and is further productive with pre-trained models which have the capacity of decreasing the training time and increasing accuracy of character recognition. Research in recognition of handwritten characters for Indian languages is less when compared to other languages like English, Latin, Chinese etc., mainly because it is a multilingual country. Recognition of Telugu and Hindi characters are more difficult as the script of these languages is mostly cursive and are with more diacritics. So the research work in this line is to have inclination towards accuracy in their recognition. Some research has already been started and is successful up to eighty percent in offline hand written character recognition of Telugu and Hindi. The proposed work focuses on increasing accuracy in less time in recognition of these selected languages and is able to reach the expectant values.

Abstract:
Online handwriting recognition or character recognition is the process in which a handwritten message is recognized by processing the handwritten data. It is the way toward changing over manually written characters to machine design. In penmanship, the strokes are made out of two arrange follows in the middle of pen down and pen up marks. Wide scope of highlights is extricated to play out thse acknowledgment. A complete internet hand-written recognition system for Indian language such as Telugu that addresses the ambiguities in separation just as recognition of buttons the recognition relies on conceptual model of penmanship structure joined with either a prejudicial model for stroke command. Such a methodology be able to flawlessly incorporate language and content data in the reproductive model then manage comparative and non-comparable strokes utilizing the single discriminative stroke grouping model. In this examination, we are utilizing disparate Legendre Sobolev conditions with the assistance of AI model, to such an extent that accomplishes 99.65% precision and improved the condition of craftsmanship esteem.

Abstract:
Abstract The use of formulaic language in written discourse is an important indicator of language competence. Nonetheless, the features of lexical bundles used by lower proficiency English as a Foreign Language learners have received little attention. The present study addressed this gap by employing a corpus-based method to investigate the quantity, function, and quality of four-word lexical bundles produced by low proficiency L2 English writers with 11 different L1 backgrounds in response to a timed English writing assessment. The investigation was specifically anchored on the data extracted from 1,330 essays using Wordsmith 7.0. Results of the investigation showed (1) an over dependence on writing topic related bundles; (2) an Indo-European L1 language background positively influencing lexical bundle production; (3) an overuse of stance expressions and discourse organizers at the expense of referential expression usage; (4) L1 Japanese, Korean, and Telugu writers producing more accurate lexical bundles and L1 German writers producing fewer accurate lexical bundles; and (5) the frequent use of lexical bundles not leading to highly accurate and appropriate use of lexical bundles. The implications of these results were discussed in connection with foreign language education.

Abstract:
Bats (Chiroptera) are the only mammals that can fly. Bat habitats are in caves, large trees in the forest, hollow trees, coconut trees, banana trees and roofs of buildings. Bats are nocturnal, they forage at night and sleep during the day by hanging upside down. Teluk Akar Bergantung has a generally flat and swampy topography, with a small portion submerged in water. Various types of trees have grown, one of them is Beringin/Kayu Are, which is where bats live. Bats play a role in the balance of ecosystems as seed dispersers, flower pollinators, insect controllers and guano producers. Based on the potential in this area, the research aims to collect data on various types of bats in Teluk Akar Bergantung, Ketapang regency, West Kalimantan. The method used is catch and release method using mist nest. Data analysis of the research used bats identification guide written by Suyanto (2001) entitled “Kelelawar di Indonesia” and “Panduan Lapangan Mamalia di Kalimantan, Sabah, Sarawak dan Brunei Darussalam” by Payne et. al (2000), diversity index (H’), equitability index (e), dominance index and species richness (d). The result of research obtained 14 individuals consist of 6 species (Vampir palsu (Megaderma spasma), Codot mini (Cynopterus minutus), Codot krawar (Cynopterus bracyothis), Codot horsfield (Cynopterus horsfieldii), Codot kecil kelabu (Pentethor lucasii) and Codot pisang-coklat (Macroglossus minimus), belonging to 2 families (Pteropodidae and Megadermatidae). Diversity index is in the medium category (1,47), the equitability index is in the high category (0,82), no type of bats that dominates (0,31) and the species richness is in medium category (2,79). Abstract:
The origin of the Kubu Kingdom was previously marked with the establishment of a village at the junction of three rivers and the construction of a fort in 1768. In other words, Kubu was a checkpoint to secure the waters from pirate attacks (Djunaidy, 2001). The new village was officially named “Kubu” in 1775 (Yosep, 1995). Later on, it became a kingdom because of the massive migration into the new territory. They embraced Islam and made it an Islamic Kingdom in West Borneo. The territory of Kubu Kingdom was very limited merely to include Padang Tikar, Terentang, Kubu, and Teluk Pekadai. Originally this area was empty. It means that the Kubu Kingdom initially did not consist of densely populated villages. As a new region, it is thought that the establishment of this Kingdom coincided with the advent of Islam brought by Syarif Idrus Alaydrus. Thus, there have been long dynamics of Islamization in this Kingdom, and reached its peak when Syarif Abbas was in power. During his reign, the institution of the mufti was created and a number of religious works were written. This paper looks at the process of early entry and development of Islam in the Kubu Kingdom, its religious scholars and their works as well as its religious institutions that once existed in the Kingdom. Keywords: Islam, Kubu Kingdom, religious works and religious institutions
