Full textThe success of Chinese professional athletes is attributable to the government-run elite sport system; it is seen as one of the most effective and successful systems at nurturing high-skilled athletes. However, within the Chinese professional sport system, tensions between athletes' athletic skills and overall personal development have been widely documented. Among all studies, very few have employed in-depth interviews with professional wushu athletes. In this study, the researcher utilized in-depth semi-structured interviews with professional wushu athletes from three of the 25 professional wushu teams in mainland China. The study was conducted in order to understand the potential conflicts between athletes' athletic skills development and overall personal development. Findings revealed that athletes bear the training at great cost to their future potential as self-sufficient members of Chinese society. Their academic, social, and vocational skills are subject to deep neglect that negatively impacts their post-competition careers. The system considers investment in preparation for the post-competitive lives of the athletes to be a distraction from, or even an impediment to, their success in competition. It is suggested that the Chinese sport system undertake a review and reformation of its approach to wushu training to provide athletes with the skills needed to successfully navigate a life outside of athletics.

Full textThe thesis explores the evolution of Wushu Kung-fu in Lebanon, a Mediterranean nation characterized by its political and social challenges. Despite the country's tensions and religious divides, Wushu Kung-fu has been a unifying force among the Lebanese since the 1970s, culminating in the country winning five medals at the 2019 World Championship. At the heart of this research is the story of Wushu's Chinese origins, its introduction in Lebanon and its growth. The thesis analyzes on one hand the Lebanese leaders’ strategies to control community divisions and political-economic challenges within this sport and from the other the role of the Lebanese Wushu Kung-fu Federation and its interactions with both local and external entities. Furthermore, the thesis illuminates the interplay between sports and politics.Wushu, known in the West primarily as kung fu, is a multifaceted sport, deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy, symbolizing the quest for harmony between body, mind, and soul. Its history, diverse styles, and character show its richness. The sport's global propagation is attributed to the diaspora of Chinese masters and Bruce Lee's cinematic influence. Yet, its recognition as an Olympic discipline will only come in the Youth Olympic Games of 2026. In Lebanon, Wushu's integration necessitated adaptations to the local culture, resulting in a uniquely Lebanese version of the sport leading to the interchangeable use of "wushu" and "kung-fu”. Firstly, while examining the martial arts landscape of Lebanon, we note how certain sports and clubs display community divisions while others exhibit transcendent national unity. Through interviews, the thesis unravels the stories of key federation and national team members, with a mention of Wushu's introduction to Lebanon by Jean Khoury in 1970, its subsequent institutionalization, and the accomplishments of the Lebanese Wushu Kung-fu Federation (FLWKF). While the FLWKF is currently comprised of mostly Christian members, its foundation had both Christian and Muslim contributors, and the federation never excluded Muslim community members. The geolocation of clubs and the career paths of its founders are deemed reasons for this makeup. The thesis underscores that despite sociopolitical tensions, sectarian divides minimally impacted the sport's performance.Secondly, the thesis delves into interviews with various sports stakeholders, investigating their perceptions and narratives about the emerging sport, especially regarding women's roles in combat sports. Through a systematic analysis, the research evaluates how sports, specifically Wushu, can shape and disseminate a positive national image, both locally and internationally. The Lebanese Wushu Kung-fu Federation holds notable achievements on the global stage despite budget constraints. In conclusion, this research chronicles the emergence of Wushu as a rallying sport in a country recognized for its significant sectarianism due to eighteen coexisting religious confessions. The Lebanese Wushu Kung Fu Federation's rise, predominantly with a Christian identity, showcases Wushu's potential as a national unifying symbol. The thesis opens on the need to expand the sport across Lebanon, especially in Muslim-majority regions, to promote female participation and to utilize Wushu as a tool for individual and collective well-being in Lebanon's diverse landscape

Abstract: Martial arts have been part of the culture and history of humankind since the begging of the civilized world. They do not only evolved, but also adapted themselves for human necessitate. However, martial arts were used for militaries and political purposes for a long time. With the development of weapons technologies, especially in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, the martial arts were losing their military importance, gaining contours and other features. In this context, wushu is highlighted by new perspectives of practice focused on health, sport and leisure. This study established as its objectives, under a changing scenario in ancient martial arts traditions, to identify how new features of these traditions allow its practice by people with different and peculiar conditions and what are the possible ways to be practiced, linked to various disabilities. In order to conduct this study, it was used as the technique to map in Brazil the number of practitioners and their practice wushu by people with disabilities, two separate questionnaires, including also interviews with people who teaches wushu, linked directly or indirectly to Brazilian Confederation of Kungfu Wushu (CBKW), given by that body, who possess over 20 years of practice. Wushu practitioners who have disabilities were also interviewed. From these data, it was presented the sport modalities linked to different disabilities, to suggest possibilities for practice. In Brazil, it was identified wushu practice by people with different limitations, and the most common were physically disabled people, followed by those with hearing, visual and mentally disabilities. This practice is carried out in a non-systematic and without prior planning, occurring due to the motivation of this public. Physical activity and sport are seen as the main focus of practice; however, the participants considered that self-defense is also a possibility. It was identified wushu teachers with disabilities working in teaching this modality for students with and without disabilities. The suggestions for practicing Wushu from this audience do not include all the arrangements for any deficiency. Some are indicated, others suggest some restrictions and require adjustments, and still others are not listed. These suggestions are linked to different and unique conditions presented by the person who intends to practice wushu. From informants' perspective of this study, everyone with different types of disabilities can practice wushu, always depending on the degree of disability, repurposing content, teaching methods, and at last, the competence of the teacher involved

Full textSports biomechanics aims at better understanding performance mechanisms, to improve them while limiting injury risk. At elite level, stances are a key aspect of performance. Often used in gait analysis, inverse dynamics enables quantification of mechanical actions during motion. However, there are some limits to this method, two of which can become important when studying sports stances: soft tissue artifact and accuracy of dynamic wrenches. The first objective of this work is to propose methodological adaptations for inverse dynamics analysis of sports stances. Firstly, the benefit of the “mean joint centers” method, based on the use of rigid clusters, is shown for segment kinematics acquisition. Secondly, the influences of the sampling frequency and the differentiation method on the calculation of accelerations are evaluated. Thirdly, the validation of a personalized volumetric model enabling better estimation of segment inertial parameters than common proportional models is presented. The second objective of this work is the application of the methods proposed to the analysis of the ankle joint mechanical behavior during plyometric jumps, and to personalized evaluation of the lower limb injury risk in elite wushu athletes. These analyses have been performed in parallel to specific measures of athletes' characteristics, such as the ankle range of motion and the shear modulii of different structures of the triceps surae, using shear wave elastography. Perspectives for training application will be discussed, to address the evolution of training habits and personalized injury prevention
